Smoked Bacon Arepas | Kelis

  • Kelis has a delicious twist on a classic Colombian street food snack - Arepas. These corn based flatbreads are usually made plain but Kelis has added crispy bacon to the mix for a smoky flavoured crunch. Grilled over an open flame and topped with light and fluffy Queso Blanco cheese, chorizo and coriander salsa, these Arepa’s make the perfect lunchtime snack.

And let the good ol' argument of whether arepas are Colombian or Venezuelan begin. Spoiler alert: the answer is BOTH. Remember that Colombia and Venezuela used to be one country until the 1800's, so that's why arepas are both Colombian AND Venezuelan. You're welcome. =)

Yeah, but Venezuelan arepas are different...they are thicker and you put whatever you want inside of it...not on top... i personally prefer the venezuelan version.

I have never commented anything here but now obviously I have to, because AREPAS ARE NOT ONLY COLOMBIAN. It is also a typical food FROM VENEZUELA, actually, they are famous by Venezuela and a few days ago they won the title of "Best Breakfast in the world" with Venezuela's name. The best way to eat it is filling inside with whatever you want. Also, the flour that the girl in the video is using "PAN", is ours too and it is made by the biggest food industry of Venezuela.

I'm sorry but being Venezuelan is what makes my impulse to say this even stronger...
Arepas are as much Venezuelan as they are as much Colombian, just leaving that clear, but I also have to say these are not arepas... 1) With arepas you make the dough with your hands not with a spoon and the water doens't have to be hot, cold water is just fine, is all in how you mix the dough with the water, need to make it all evenly, not too smooshy but not too thick either, you just need to keep an eye on the consistency, that's the secret, takes a couple of tries but soon enough anybody can be able to make proper arepas. 2) They have to be evenly round with smooth edges, if there are cracks on the edges when you pad them is because the dough needs a tiny little more water. 3) Although, nothing dictates that you can't put bacon in your arepa, is not the Colombian/Venezuelan way, chorizo is fine because is more hispanic, but honestly this looks more like the American version of it.
The beautiful thing about arepas is that you can almost eat it with anything but there's also tradition and I'm telling you this are not real arepas, they look more like tostones-shaped to me, for me is really weird also to put guasacaca (green sauce at the end) on an arepa, we do that mostly in barbecues and aside as if they were bread. I don't know how you would do that in Colombia but in Venezuela is like that. What I would like to express ultimatly is that I would recommend to try the real thing first and then try this type of recipes because honest to God it doesn't looks bad, it looks extremly delicious, might try the recipe myself but this type of food in specific it has a lot of historical and cultural meaning to us Venezuelans and Colombians and so do many other dishes in the world. Gotta respect the dish before you can try experimenting with it.

Camilo Soto the arepas were created in the northeastern side of venezuela, pretty far away from colombia. in fact the word arepa comes from the language of the venezuelan natives who invented it; the cumanagotos.

Why we should let go of something so precious for us? Arepas are from Venezuela. The flour that they used is originally made here. Besides, Colombians have so much GREAT and TASTY food that I don't understand why they always do arepas, to be honest their food is amazing.
