This was my second race I attended. Free tickets from a cousin who worked at a radio station. Damn backstretch seats. I was just a kid, had to have a friend's dad take us out there in that madness, and come back and pick us up. My hero Pearson crashed out of two and stopped in front me. That sucked. A Pearson fan from the mid 70s, finally got to see him live, and a few more times, but never was really competitive after the Hoss Ellington ride. Thanks to UA-cam I can relive the best days of Nascar tho.
personally i have been to the World 600 six times . Earnhardt , Waltrip and Allison won it 2 times each in the 1980's ,i drank plenty of beer there too
Given how great he was at almost every other big speedway in his career, it's hard for anyone to believe that this was as close as Bill Elliott would ever get to winning the Coca-Cola (World) 600. He would win the 500-mile fall race at Charlotte twice (1984, '87), but much like Cale Yarborough, who won the fall race three times but never won the 600, this would be the one significant race that Bill Elliott would never win. It's also interesting to note that Elliott also never won the All-Star Race at Charlotte, either, as his win in that event came the one time it wasn't held at Charlotte.
In 2000, he dominated the first two segments of the All-Star race, and then in the weirdest thing I've ever seen, Dale Junior's car became a rocket ship and Bill's went away. He had it won in 1987 before Ironhead struck...
Ernies Ford engines had a higher power band which gave Bill a advantage on big speedways.. The All star engines were all time bombs that the Gm guys could build up but didn't have to last, so E Elliotts engines had no advantage in the All star race. Nascar changed the engine rules due to Elliotts dominance fearing people would get bored watching him lap the field!
He missed winning the 1987 Winston because of the two aysewholes Bodine and Earnhardt beating on him and trying to wreck him. He clearly had the best car that day.
Sometimes when track conditions are different from the norm, a car manufacturer body design which are not of the sleeker, slicker design that might resemble a shoebox creates downforce hence runs faster through the corners and out does competition probable not possible yes through the decades I've seen it virtually the only explanation for winning versus not?? I'm just saying? I hope my message doesn't get lost in my lack of proper English!
Man, they sure were pushing for a Ford to win that race, I guess to many Ford fans crying...Them Chevys still the most dominant manufacturer of any level of performance competition, circle track dirt or asphalt, drag racing, truck pulling, 4 wheeling, you name it, if they come, they will dominate it
Charlotte as many of the tracks would simulcast the radio broadcast during the race over the P.A., with the track P.A. cutting in when it needs to during the race.

When NASCAR was so much more exciting than it is today
real American cars
Gal darn Bill was a clean racer
Beautiful voice
Great race, when was the first World 600 mile race broadcast on 📺 tv?
No 77 World 600 Was
3:13:25 the incident which led DW challenging anyone to fight him at a K-Mart.
I could be wrong. But at 2:13:48 it seemed like the dude wasn't liking the camera man filming his girl. 😂😂😂
My Man Neil Bonnett first 600 win should have won in 1981
Wish all the old races had a picture as good as this one.

It was at Atlanta motor speedway
No , but first one to win The Winston Million.

These old school races brings back some really good memories amen

Always remember...if you don't have credentials, "GET THE F**K OFF OF PIT ROAD"!!
Bobby Allison always drove his car in the lead pack .🏁 he has been a role model to me since i was 17 years old
Neil was a fine racer.
Even in those days Dr. Punch had a huge stiffie for Dale Earnhardt.
So great to hear Bill Connell, I always loved listening to him
During the National Anthem, was the cameraman swatting at flies or something -- with the camera?
what other 1982 races do you have
dave mustain is he from megadeath??
Dave Despain is his name. Dave MUSTAIN was too drunk at the time...
Sounds like Ken Squire and Bill Connell doing the play by play and Dr. Jerry Punch on the public address.
it was on the radio: The Performance Racing Network (PRN Radio) www.goprn.com/
i think it's Dave Despain

Worst version of the star spangled banner I ever heard
OK Steven Tyler
Look up former track star Carl Lewis trying to sing the anthem. Absolutely hideous.
No, that Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas holds the distinction of worst version ever. It was before a NBA game I believe. You can thank me later. 😂
It’s like watching this great race on TV but listening through the radio! 🤨
How many came for this while watching the 2020 Coca-Cola 600 after Chase Elliott took the lead?
Sounds like the MRN feed.
They made these races sound like all out chaotic event...lol. So damn good.
Do you have the 1982 Firecracker 400?
🏁🇺🇲🗽🇺🇲🏁
Thanks for this
we can only hope nascar to go bankrupt so we can get back to racin like this again.
You are the gift that keeps on giving.
This had to be Ford's best race overall in the '82 season.
