- Carolyn Rue, the original drummer of Hole, speaks in her first solo on-camera interview since the release of "Pretty on the Inside"! We talk about her upbringing in the California punk scene, meeting Courtney Love, joining Hole and seeing the band solidify with Jill Emery and Eric Erlandson, writing and releasing their first record as the Seattle scene began to explode, hanging with Kurt Cobain, feminism, how she left the band and what she's been up to since!

Carolyn worked so hard at promoting Hole when she was the drummer and you would see her out in clubs all the time, handing out flyers for their upcoming shows. I used to go to all their shows back then, and after she and bassist Jill left the band, I lost interest and never saw them again. The original lineup was the best imho, and I'm glad I got to see them then. I've never forgotten seeing Carolyn out night after night promoting her band and I've always thought she was super cool! She was very talented and always looked fabulous. The fact that CL basically stabbed her in the back after all her hard work as their primary promoter as well as being their drummer was disgusting and not remotely okay.
Stabbed? Many legendary bands now, changed the drummer to evolve. Business baby!
You are so lucky to see Hole in 1991!!! I saw a Hole in 2010 worst lineup ever!!! Tell me everything about the early 90s Hole shows!!!! I’ve been a Hole fan since 1999 and I’m 38 years old now

This is amazing and enlightening. Carolyn(?!-never would’ve known about her misspelled name) has always been an enigma to me because there has always been so little information out there about her. Pretty on the Inside is my favorite album of all time.
As a fan of Hole's it has been so disappointing to hear how Courtney treated Carolyn and Jill. Not to mention the Patty Schemel debacle with Celebrity Skin. Makes me fear talk of Courtney hating Kristen was probably correct. Still, I'm glad Carolyn is doing well and look forward to hearing her new music.
It was Carolyn and NOT Courtney who worked tirelessly to promote the band and I felt she was totally stabbed in the back, did not remotely deserve it, and it totally turned me off to all the future versions of Hole.
Of course she treated Pfaff like trash. She was completely jealous of her. She hates any woman that has more talent and beauty and with Courtney, it doesn’t take much.

Exene told me that when they ( X) , were recording , Motley Crue were in the same studio. They were huge X fans and I thought that was pretty interesting. Great interview! Burn Black, Drown Soda, Mrs Jones and Dicknail saved rock for me when nothing seemed to coming out or around. Then the next wave came in the 90s with grunge and Seattle. I love Inger Lorre. She's a talker. I suggest interviewing her. Everything she says is gold and she has no filter. Thank you for these!

Great insightful interview, with lots of new information I never knew (Babydoll was about Madonna!??) A bit disappointed we didn't get more of a deep dive into some of those answering machine messages at the end of Sassy: who's telling who that their repuations was shit in this town? Mystery unsolved ! Although I hear it might have been a series of rants left for Love by Inger Lorre over some squabble or other.

This was a great interview!! POTI is one of my favorite albums of all times, and it's great to hear from Carolyn because her story is not often herd. I especially enjoyed how many new things I learned about the meanings of the songs on the album. I never knew that Courtney screaming on sassy was because she was mad at Carolyn after she got hurt. That defiantly changes how I feel about that song.
It's so harrowing to learn about the tragedy that surrounded this band. It's one thing to read about it but another to hear from the people who lost those around them. My heart goes out to Carolyn.

That sucks that she was shafted/fired the way she was...but I think she was better off in the long run.
I read an interview years ago where Courtney was convinced by Kurt to fire Carolyn so Patty could be drummer (since she wowed Kurt on her audition to be drummer of Nirvana).
It seems like Eric and Courtney listened to others instead of going with their own instincts since they listened to the producer of Celebrity Skin and pushed Patty out..just like Carolyn was pushed out for Patty
Kurt and courtney were fighting over who got to get patty into their band. Kurt wanted her for nirvana, courtney wanted her for hole more.

Been listening to hole since I was 7. Was into Nirvana back in 1990/91 when I was in foster care and older foster sisters had their albums in the back bedroom. I saw “Hole” live in 2010 and after however it was with that disastrous fake lineup with Micko Larkin which we know is not real Hole. It’s Courtney’s birthday today. Justice for Kurt. I think she dated sickie wife beater
More people need to tell the truth of all the abuse and pain they have endured at the hands of Courtney Love.

@@instrumentsmrti Carolyn and I were roommates around that time and she was in the band shortly after that. I saw them play at a club in Huntington Beach before I got pregnant in early 1988.
@@snowwhite7341 there's a show documented there in late 1989, but zero documentation of hole existing pre 1989, all sources say that the band formed that year and carolyn was there until 1992. if u do find anywhere that says they were around before that let me know

Great interview, Mikayla. Carolyn is a cool lady. Unfortunately, Courtney comes off like an absolute sociopathic monster from grooming Carolyn to find her sensitive spots to encouraging Joe to film a dying man's last moments, among other disturbing details. A lot of other interesting information surrounding the POTI era, too. Courtney would die to know that we know Babydoll is about Madonna...

Very few people I knew back then who were around in that scene liked her and that includes me - she's not a nice person, to say the least, and she is NOT a supporter of other women, regardless of how she likes to portray herself.
Courtney is a product of her upbringing…..she may come off as such but look at her parents too

Courtney was never really a champion of other women - it's just an act. In real life she's a total mean girl.

Thank you for this interview that gives credit to Carolyn Rue's contributions to Hole! I found Hole's POTI in 1991, and it changed my life as far as the emotional sonic mass it was/it, as well as lyrically.

It sounds like CL was kinda threatened by her and that story about how she basically forbade Kurt from becoming closer friends with her was very sad. She's a very insecure, competitive person who's not very nice in real life. She doesn't at all walk the talk about being a feminist - she does NOT like other women nor does she elevate them in any way.
Such an intimate interview..wow I felt like Carolyn took me back to that early era.. her & hole were part of..incredibly honest too..also melancholic at times..I can't believe I just watched all of it..thank you both for this gem
Mikayla, you are spot on, Carolyn is a treasure. I enjoyed every moment of this interview. I was very influenced to play drums by her playing on Pretty On The Inside and have been playing since, for decades. She is extremely humble as I am sure there are many women who she influenced and then those women have influenced more women! I love and appreciate her feminist statements and agree with them all. I loved her stories and her insights. I totally agree we must preserve these parts of our history lest we lose the female voice that DID exist throughout. Also, you did a fantastic job on this interview! Thank you for all you do. It is great work. ❤ 🥁

I drum all the time to pretty on the inside! Carolyn is the best! In 7th grade I cut my best friends bangs just like Carolyn one summer in 1994❤️💕
If you ever have Carolyn again, ask her about Violet, how they wrote it, and if it was her idea to turn her former boyfriend's sexist song into a women's empowerment one.
They deserve monetary credit for that song. Shame on Courtney.
@@ladygodiva4141 but we don't know if Jill or Carolyn wrote a single note... Melissa Auf der Maur already explained that songwriting credits went to the people who composed the music with an acoustic guitar (melody) and to the ones who wrote the lyrics. It was a widely extended practice among bands (Melissa does have songwriting credits in some Celebrity Skin songs because she contributed to the composition). For example, in Nirvana, Kurt got 100% songwriting credits for songs he wrote with his guitar, even though Dave and Krist came up with their parts. Dave didn't like this model, so in Foo Fighters, all band members have songwriting credits no matter if they came up with the skeleton or just added a bass melody or a drum beat.
PS. it would be shame on Courtney AND Eric, since the band was 50% each.
@@julesvan I can only go from Jill stating (like Melissa) she had songwriting on violet and doll parts and Courtney refused her any credit. Both going on to live through this. Which just feels a lil exploitative you’re right, from both her and Eric.
@@ladygodiva4141 Bass players and drummers used to be screwed. With The Beatles, only Lennon and MacCartney got songwriting credits for "Hey Jude" or "Yesterday", but the drum beats were written by Ringo Starr and the bass by George Harrison. The latter wasn't happy and started keeping melodies for himself until he had a finished song so Lennon and MacCarthy didn't have any credits (ie. Something).
However, it went from the exploitative "only the main melody and lyrics get credits" to "every person who contributed gets them". That's why Beyonce has been criticized a thousand times for changing a word in an already-written song and winning Grammys for co-writing the song. imo the right model should be something in the middle.
So my point is, Jill didn't write the melody or the lyrics in Doll Parts. So as screwed as it is, The Beatles, The Who, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. shared the same model Hole had. That's why I don't agree with "shame on Courtney".
With Violet though, I was very curious to know if Carolyn did contribute to the lyrics since some verses are linked to her personal life. If those two lines were penned by Carolyn, would she be entitled to ask for songwriting credits? Or is that like Beyonce adding a word or two?
@@ladygodiva4141 oh, and Melissa only got credits on songs she contributed to the main melody. She didn't get any on songs where she only added her bass parts once the skeleton had been written (like Jill).
In my opinion, adding a bass line or a drumbeat does qualify for songwriting. It's a shame many bands followed the dinosaur model back then.

Omg this is great, she seems soooooo cool and genuine…..the way she laughed when discussing drown soda 😂😂😂😂 now we know why the sit back down in sassy was there…….the fact that she brings up voting against Reagan and politics makes me love her more…..she’s definitely got a lot more stories to tell….im in awwwwww!!!!! Particularly loved her take on the meaning of the saying pretty on the inside…….her pregnancy story is heartbreaking 💔……you handled it well. It’s obvious she was affected by Courtneys words, I ❤ Courtney but she herself acknowledges she’s a B! This is fascinating to me hearing these stories, Melissa Rossi’s book describes Courtney as such too….she says it perfectly that people take their issues out on others…..Courtney herself had been taunted about her looks, hurt people hurt people…… however it’s not cool. I have never saw your channel but you did a great job interviewing her and allowing her to speak freely❤❤❤ thank you so much for this and also for recognizing Eric’s songwriting skills , he doesn’t get enough credit imo ..Mrs Jones is my favorite off the album too❤❤❤ we love your contributions Carolyn

On a side note (and 100% NOT in a snobby corrective way) I think the reason Carolyn and Jill don’t have much thought on the Riot Grrrl scene is because it really wasn’t a genre so much as a true feminist “group” (not band group) movement. Even though there are a handful of what may truly be titled Riot Grrrl bands due to their direct ties with it’s inception along with similar musical interests & backgrounds: Bratmobilie, Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Emily’s Sassy Lime, Excuse 17 & then tied in close Team Dresch, (early)7 Year Bitch, Cheesecake, Mecca Normal, Free Kitten, Raouul, Tiger Trap and across the Atlantic in the Uk HUGGY BEAR🙌🏾💫 Skinned Teen, Voodoo Queens, Linus, Heavenly, Mambo Taxi & also on both sides tie ins with bands like Nation of Ulysses, Cornershop, Kicking Giant, Blood Sausage Unwound etc.
These bands while being TRULY Riot Grrrl connected didn’t always classify themselves as Riot Grrrl and most came to prominence AFTER that first wave of late 80s early 90s female led crunchy/noisy, punk, grunge/rock bands: Babes in Toyland, Lunachicks, L7, Hole, STP, Dickless, Boss Hog, and going back a bit further Frightwig🙌🏾💕
THESE bands either fought tooth and nail AGAINST the Riot Grrrl label or begrudgingly went along with and ‘humored’ the convo later, seeing the fight against the ‘riot grrrl’ tag as a losing battle. Some hated the Riot Grrrl, ramshackle, “ANYTHING GOES! Just start a band and play!” Aesthetic- seeing the Riot Grrrl bands as too “amateur” and tacky (Courtney after being rejected by the Olympia/Dc riot grrrl axis (she was a big supporter at first but she turned QUICK)) while L7 were staunch supporters of the Riot Grrrls message and Free Kitten were partially inspired by Riot Grrrl aesthetic (along with Royal Trux sleaze blues, hip hop, French pop etc lol) and it shows in their records.
Now I’m rambling but the MAIN difference is Babes, L7, EARLY Hole, Lunachicks etc were coming from straight up noise rock, scumrock, HC inspired thing. Their peers being bands like Killdozer, Mudhoney, Cows, The Jesus Lizard etc. whereas Riot Grrrls influences were stuff like Raincoats, Shop Assistants, Beat Happening, MDC, Nation of Ulysses, The Slits and stuff.
I could’ve explained that better but that’s the difference and the main reason women from female led grunge bands don’t really see themselves as Riot Grrrl or have much of a point of view of it’s inception, nor see themselves AS that.
Tobi from Bikini Kill is iffy on whether Riot Grrrl can even be truly considered a genre, because it was TRULY in it’s real life form- JUST an all around group meetings/ fanzines/ activist thing & bands like BK & Bratmobile were more or less just the inspiration & soundtrack. Bands like L7, Hole and Babes truly 100% had NOTHING to do with it.
They were def INSPIRATIONS to the actual riot grrrls- along with the Raincoats/Beat Happening type stuff that the RG bands loved- but they ultimately just happened to be women playing punk before and at the same time Riot Grrrl started getting written about and gaining steam in the press and then suddenly ANY band with women were being labeled as Riot Grrrl.
Lol- it’s complicated as hell and kinda silly but I hope that makes sense to anyone who might’ve wondered or read thru
