Yep. This is the first time I’ve watched it since my first time It’s up there with Schindler’s List where it’s a very good movie but I can’t rewatch it
Probably one of the key features to this movie being such a success was that no one had divulged the gut punch twist that occurs towards the end of the movie, taking it in a whole new direction. People were going to see what they thought was a female boxing movie, and coming out overwhelmed by having seen a searing account of euthanasia.
Because the theme of family regrets looms so large in this movie, I always thought that the reason Maggie decided she was ready to go wasn't just because she had traveled the world and become famous, but because she finally stood up to her family. I always thought that was the last thing she felt she needed to accomplish to have lived a full life.
Freaking love this movie! This movie is the reason why Clint is my favorite actor. I’m glad you guys have experienced this performance as well as Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank’s amazing performances.
Interesting trivia: the 2 main leads of SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins) both won their Oscars one year after the other for Clint Eastwood directed films. Robbins won Supporting Actor for MYSTIC RIVER (2003) while Morgan Freeman won the same category for this film the very next year.
@@Stogie2112 Same but I think it was a mistake to put Morgan Freeman in the Best Leading actor category for Shawshank. He probably would've won that year if he was in Best supporting actor.
@@MasonGrant0704 .... It was strange to see Robbins get no nominations. He and Freeman were both magnificent. If Robbins had been nominated for Best Actor, Tom Hanks would have still won, IMO.
@@Stogie2112 I agree, I think Shawshank and Pulp Fiction are far better movies compared to Forest Gump but Tom Hanks really carried that whole movie by himself and deserved it. Forest Gump had no business winning best picture or director.

Fantastic film, I've been watching Clint Eastwood since reruns of Rawhide. He's makes films and tells stories that he wants to see, not what Hollywood wants to see. 94 and still going.
Clint Eastwood also composed the score you hear for this film as well (he also scored MYSTIC RIVER, which he also directed). At the very least, Clint Eastwood has a hand in composing the melody of the theme music for most of the films he has directed.
Eastwood plays piano and loves jazz. That's why he has used LennIe Neihaus to score some of his movies. Lenny did a lot of jazz and big band arrangements.and played saxophone. He passed in 2020. He was 90.

The writing in this movie is so subtle and next level, it takes this movie to that God-tier level. ----- When Willie leaves Frankie, he says, “You taught, me everything I need to know”. ---- The talks with Morgan Freeman reflecting on past failures. ---- The story of Maggie and her dads dog ‘Axel’, getting Frankie to pull the plug. ----- Amazing writing to let the dialogue guide us through the present by reflecting on the past. ---- This is the reason I watch amazing movies. Clint Eastwood never fails.
Maggie's mother was played by awesome character actress Margot Martindale. She won an Emmy for her role as Mags Bennett in "Justified" S2. Speaking of "Justified", PLEASE do it! You won't be sorry!
Maggie's story is like a twist on the classic Cinderella tale. Her good father dies, leaving her at the mercy of her dishonorable family, who try to keep her miserable. Frankie is her prince all throughout the film, and her boxing gloves are her slippers - her opportunity for happiness. Maggie's mother wants her to get married, but not to be happy. She wants her own daughter to be as miserable as she is. Don't be great, just marry a man and live in mediocrity. Only a cruel twist in the story destroyed Maggie's dream, but her prince still saved her at the end...but not in the way that we expected.
'Boys Don't Cry' [ 1999 ] which won Swank her first Academy Award. The 2nd she got for 'Baby' - along with 3 others: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Morgan Freeman !
The crazy thing is Frankie didn’t want to take his original fighter to the championship fight because he wanted to protect him. He gave in and took Maggie to the championship fight, and she lost her life. He must’ve felt horrible. But that’s what she wanted. That is what fulfilled her life. Such a great movie.

LOL I have never heard Sam using so many naughty words in a recap. Those people rank right up there with Percy in Green Mile as the worst of the worst. The rage is 10x more for me because my wifes parents are like this, perhaps not in this bad of a capasity but everything is about them and its such rage inducing.
Clint Eastwood is an underground fist fighter in " Every which way but loose" and the sequel "Any which way you can". It's a comedy drama and he has a pet orangatan. It's fantastic.
Clint directed both sides of the horrible WWII battle for Iwo Jima Island! And the one in Japanese is the greater film! - Letters from Iwo Jima, 2006. The Last Samurai’s star stars in it.
Knew this movie would get you both, such a wonderful movie deserved all the awards it won, Clint’s directed movies usually have a dark ending at least melancholy but so well written and directed a good movie he stared in later in his long career is called Trouble with the curve co staring Justin Timberlake. Love your reactions this movie I can never not watch so good but so sad
3:16 - This boxer ('Big Willie Little'), btw, is actor Mike Colter who plays "Luke Cage" on the popular Netflix series of the same name. Great series, and worthy of binge watching! :)
Another great reaction and why you guys are among my favorite reactors. You guys will love Clint and the movie In The Line Of Fire. After you two watch that you should also watch a movie with the same subject matter The Sentinel. A Hillary Swank movie to watch is Boys Don’t Cry. That one is probably more relevant today.
It was awesome to see Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman together. Hillary Swank was the Cherry on top of this movie! Great reaction and my favorite character is Danger... All Heart and he ends up coming back to the Gym! For more Hillary Swank watch "The Core".Thanks for sharing TBR🥊🥊
Katie Dallam was the inspiration to the book that was wrote. She got brain damage from a fight and was never the same. If you search her name in youtube you can actually watch the 7min fight that caused her brain damage. A side note though she did get into a minor car accident the day prior to the fight , so a lot of people believe it was a combination of the car accident and the fight that caused her brain damage.
Great job as usual for you 2 as it was a brilliantly acted, directed (eastwood won oscar) film. FUN fact is that Albert ruddy (one of Godfather producers) had the story and couldnt get it made for 4 yrs Until Eastwood read it and Clint even said ""It's a downer...but God, it's gorgeous." and it was in theaters for over 6 mnths after it was NOM for those oscars and a Huge hit
Hilary won her second Oscar with Million Dollar Baby. Please see the film for which she first took home the Academy Award, Boys Don’t Cry. She is devastating in that.
Easy to see why Oscars were won. Excellent but tragic. Personally I can't stand boxing, but there are many really good movie about boxers, either real or fictional: Rocky (1976), Cinderella Man (2005), The Fighter (2010), Southpaw (2015), Raging Bull (1980), Hard Times (1975), Ali (2001). For another Hillary Swank movie that's "up to par", Boys Don't Cry (1999) for which she won her 1st Oscar.
This was an awesome reaction to a magnificent and heartbreaking movie. As far as Hilary Swank recommendations, please definitely check out "Boys Don't Cry", and for Clint Eastwood-directed recommendations, I'd say the westerns "The Outlaw Josey Wales", "High Plains Drifter", and "Pale Rider", the thriller "Play Misty for Me" (his directing debut!), and the underappreciated "Invictus", "The Hereafter" and "Sully". Another can't miss, that he starred in but didn't direct, is the great thriller "In the Line of Fire". Can't wait until you get to any of these!
Clint Eastwood has had such a long career with so many great movies. One of my favorites which scared me as a kid is Play Misty For Me. Hillary Swank is a great actress Million Dollar Baby and Boys Don't Cry are 2 of her best known but she has been in more than 30 movies.
More Clint Eastwood movies you should watch/react to: Palr Rider, The Eiger Sanction, Kelly's Heroes, Heartbreak Ridge, Where Eagles Dare, Hang 'Em High and The Outlaw Josie Wales
Morgan Freeman is in a movie with a similar character, not exactly the same but close in a movie with Robert Redford called An Unfinished Life. It is a great "coming back to life' so to speak movie.
As you can imagine, a lot of people (particularly people affected by immobilzing disabilities) found the ending of this higly controversial. Regardless, Clint Eastwood is a stellar director.
As someone who is extremely disabled with numerous diseases, they(not you) need to shut their mouths then. I get to decide what I do with my life. The right to live includes the right to die.
The Actress who played "The Blue Bear" is the great Lucia Rijker out of the Netherlands. She's probably the best female fighter we've ever seen and by all accounts a sweet person. I watched her fight many years ago and her Wiki page is just fascinating! "P.S., I Love You" and the best on a true story "Boys Don't Cry", a very good.
For more Hilary Swank, I would recommend: - Boys Don't Cry (her other Oscar-winning role, but this one is also a tough watch) - Logan Lucky - The Hunt - The Homesman (I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard she's quite good in it) - The Gift (another tough watch, particularly for her character)

Just a beautiful movie. It makes me cry everytime. And you guys made me cry once again. So glad you loved it.
Clint Eastwood is an underground fist fighter in " Every which way but loose" and the sequel "Any which way you can". It's a comedy drama and he has a pet orangatan. It's fantastic.
A masterpiece, this movie destroyed me.
Yeah this movie will destroy you. It's a such a great tearjerker.
Clint directed both sides of the horrible WWII battle for Iwo Jima Island! And the one in Japanese is the greater film! - Letters from Iwo Jima, 2006. The Last Samurai’s star stars in it.
13:37 "Damn." -Sam
there is just something about the way Sam deepens her voice to say "damn" i just find very funny.
Thank you both. To Release tears together with you. to let IT Go. And travel together to the common bottom of our Souls.
This movie makes me sob every single time I watch it. Easily one of the best movies ever.
3:16 - This boxer ('Big Willie Little'), btw, is actor Mike Colter who plays "Luke Cage" on the popular Netflix series of the same name. Great series, and worthy of binge watching! :)
Oh God time to get the box of tissues
My first time “watching” it since in the theaters. Such a good movie but tough (emotional) rewatch. Gotta take 20 years off between. 😂
Whew!! Are you ready??!!!
So many parallels with Gran Torino. The crappy, ungrateful family. The annoying person who becomes the best friend. The tragedy….
I love your guys feelings as to the films, keep it up..
In my pursuit to get you two to watch Courage Under Fire, (another great Denzel Washington film) I want to let you know that it is on hulu right now!
Everyone including myself was crying in the theater the night I went to see this wonderfully moving movie! GREAT reaction by you two!
Hilary won her second Oscar with Million Dollar Baby. Please see the film for which she first took home the Academy Award, Boys Don’t Cry. She is devastating in that.
Clint Eastwood is a very sensitive director. He is an Icon.
It's about time😄😄😄Now everyone is starting to react to this great movie‼🥊💥
This movie was protested by people with disabilities.
To me, I can't think of anything more loving than taking away someone's unbearable pain. ❤
Agree
Love this reaction from you guys.
Def on the list of most depressing movies. Y’all should watch “A Star is Born” next , for a good pick me up
Clint Eastwood has had such a long career with so many great movies.
21:42 Yup! That was my reaction as well! Followed by anger 😠
*talking about Sam lol
Now do an Eastwood COMEDY!!!!! "Every Which Way but Loose".....we all need a laugh after this....
You two needed a 10 count after this!
This breaks me every time
Morgan Freeman is in a movie with a similar character, not exactly the same but close in a movie with Robert Redford called An Unfinished Life.
For more Hilary Swank, I would recommend:
- Boys Don't Cry (her other Oscar-winning role, but this one is also a tough watch)
- Logan Lucky
- The Hunt
- The Homesman (I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard she's quite good in it)
- The Gift (another tough watch, particularly for her character)
After the immense "Mystic River" the great Clint Eastwood makes a film so beautiful and sad at the same time.
Beautiful reaction, guys.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia can make you smile and laugh about this movie’s horrible turn of events, I swear!
RAGING BULL! RAGING BULL! (1980) ... and this is why a Martin Scorsese directed boxing movie , staring Robert De Nero and Joe Pesci

A good Hillary Swank movie I think you'd enjoy is Freedom Writers... based on a true story 🙂
