As a South African I'd like to say that i WOULD recommend packing a raincoat because depending on where in the country you are we have seasonal rains. In CT it rains in autumn and winter and in other parts of the country it rains in summer. Nights are generally a lot cooler than daytime winter and summer however our winter temps can be brutal. I've even heard Russians complain about the cold in winter. Don't be fooled by our sunshine in winter it still gets very cold. Its a dry bone penetrating cold.
I really enjoy listening to audiobooks on trains etc, as they give you something to do, but you can still enjoy the scenery while you're listening to them.
Thanks so much for the info! I'm going in June on that trip and have still some questions left...Generally how much money did you spend and how much cash would you recommend bringing? Also how do you charge the phone in the Lando (via USB or do you need a south african plug)? Last question I have, is if you brought a SIM card with you, or did you have Wifi in the Lando? In the trip information it said, that there would be Wifi, but like not everyday or so. Would be amazing if you find the time to answer! Thank you :)
I made a whole video about the cost breakdown, it’s also on my channel. I would recommend taking out some South African Rand, maybe 1500 SAR. You have plenty of options for ATMS along the way. Better than having a lot of cash laying around. Also maybe get some USD (200) out in advance for Zimbabwe. The phone could get charged in the lando via usb, eu plug or american plug. Some locations only had SA plugs so i’d bring a power bank too. There is no wifi in the lando, but most locations have wifi. If you want you can get an e-sim for SA and a physical sim in namibia
Thank you for the tips! I‘ll be off to Southafrica with gadventures in a month, now I‘m sure about what to pack. Just a little silly question.. how did you dry your hair all the time? That‘s my only question left 😅
Thanks for the tips! I am hoping to do a trip like that next summer :) Are there opportunities to wash some clothing on the way? And if so, how frequently would you say washing clothing is realistic?
Yes! I did at every option I’d say about 1x every 7-10days, bit expensive, watch my full breakdown of expenses next week, but I spent around 50 eur in the month I was there doing laundry
I was looking at a trip with G Adventure and it says you bag size can only be 15kg. Is that true? That is the size of a normal backpack. I don't see how you could fit everything they suggest bringing in a bag that small, with a sleeping bag. Can you post a pic of the size bag you took?
Watch my packing video to see what I brought: ua-cam.com/video/QlToydnc87A/v-deo.html I had the 40L eagle creek global companion backpack. I would bring a big backpack (40-65L) sleeping bag separately & a small rug sack for day to day things like snacks, book, water.. The kilo weight is more strict if you have flights in between stops (not on the 18-30’s trips, but on the standard trips this is sometimes the case) because they have super small planes with which you fly. Otherwise it’s more so that you’d be able to carry your bag yourself from campsite to campsite! Everyone with 70-85L backpacks regretted bringing so much stuff! Also a soft shell bag is HIGHLY recommend as it needs to fit easily in the storage in the back of the Lando (bus)
@@travelaimes Perfect, I was looking at the Osprey 55L Ariel that comes with a detachable daypack. I just didn't want to be over the weight/size limited mentioned on the website.
@@MissAshleyND does your osprey 55l work well? i m thinking of buying an osprey kyte 36l, since g adventures had not only weight but also dimension limit, 15kg, 65*30*30cm.
I love this video but africa is a continent theres over 50 countries, refer to the country rather than collectively saying africa , as each country has a different climate , culture and ethnic background ❤
I went to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe & Zambia, that’s why I refer to Africa, it’s 5 southern countries, would be a mouthful to pronounce every time

Wow what an amazing experience!! Thanks for sharing these tips.
Yes surely was!

Great video! What DSLR camera did you take and were you able to charge the batteries during the trip or did you bring spare? Thanks
I didn't go to Africa but I went to Amsterdam and got some Churros, I took one, tied it in a knot and called it a Stritzel 👨

I usually let my hair air dry! Most people did this, some places you could dry it if you bring a small hair dryer, but definitely not everywhere
much appreciated content

@@travelaimes awesome, thank you so much :)
Hi! I’m off on this tour in June :) Can I ask if you needed to bring a sleeping mat or were they provided?
They provide a 5cm thick mattress for you. You need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow
Great video, and you seem like a kind person. So sad what your country Belgium has done to Congo. Shame, shame, shame.
What about footwear? Did you just pack the one pair that you used daily?
1 pair of teva’s and 1 sporty sneaker which i used for hikes and walks which required closed toe shoes
Can I bring my own tent? I dont mind sharing tents but the others might as I snore.
I’d reach out to G adventures to confirm but would say you could, it’s just not super convenient
What handbags/bags did you bring?
Only my fanny pack
Do u get a solo tent ?
standard pricing is a shared tent with 1 other person. But you can upgrade to a solo tent
