    I'm sitting here watching this 15 year old video, and I'm approaching the age you were in this video at the time. I watch your current stuff and you're still at it and enjoying it all these years later - it really gives me hope for the future and keeping active in my older age! Wooo buddy, buddy!

    I own a Hennessy Hammock, and love it. Other than the small fly that comes with it. I find every night too windy and cold in it, even on hot summer nights. I've taken the fly off the hannock's suspension lines, put it on a ridgline of its own so I can hang it lower to the hammock. I like being cozy and cocooned in for sleeping. And use a 7x9 tarp over that again. The factory fly allows 100% of the wind in, in the ends.
    Great vid Shug.....keep up the good work.

    I ended up buying the camouflage basha with alot of loops around it and three loops on the top and went to the forest. I didnt expect to stay overnight but as i went really far i had to stay
    I first went to the forest in the valley but it came out to be a damn swamp so i ended up making a shelter in the rock formation in the mountains cause the flies and mosquitoes would have eaten me alive The basha was awesome and provided me with the best cover from the wind and rain Now i need a hammock!

      Just discovered your channel as I just got my first hammock and was looking for ideas. Watched about 8 of your vids in a row. I'll have to go back through and practice some of those knots. Love your style and occasional antics, especially when you make up songs on the fly. I do that all the time and my cats think I'm hilarious.

    I'm disappointed with most of the videos like this that I see on youtube... it seems that it most are hosted by some boring guy droning on and on about nothing... or jacked up on quick edits and heavy metal music. It is a pleasure to find folks like yourself who are making GREAT informative videos full of mirth and USEFUL information. Great job editing, and keeping it moving... I got all the great tips you had to offer without having to watch 14 minutes of you setting things up. EXCELLENT!

    Sigh, I grew up in the islands and there was always a hammock there strung up with rope and a burlap sack. Forgot about it, in the military's working in jungles of se Asia I saw the local with them so but that sleeping bag away and back to hammock omg first night joyous. So for like for months in broken periods I live in a tarp hammock set up with a netting. This vantage point made it great to watch my buddies get bitten by every insect know to man. Tarp and hammocks work and for mobility and to get out of some where in a hurry there is. I better. I always wonder how you would employ it in the cold temp we'll wonder no more...ran into your channel just got to figure out how to keep my dog in his. Love the channel

    "African anaconda's" are extremely rare; If you ever encounter one, you're really having a bad day. Heh!
    I don't have a tarp with doors, but the tarps I use are large enough to configure them with doors. I agree, that's the best way to go for cold weather conditions with a hammock.
    As always, I really enjoyed your video.

      ***** hiya shug! What would you say is your favorite tarp set up system? I'm planning on purchasing a warbonnet superfly in the near future and am trying to figure out the best complete set up for it. Are a snakeskins the most convenient or would using a double ended stuff sack/bishop bag be better? I'm currently using a continuous ridgeline with two mini carabiners and a prusik knot on one end. I can't seem to figure out how to properly set this up as the prusik knot doesn't seem to hold taught. Would using guy lines on each end be easier. Thanks in advance!

    Great vid. lots of good tip's & tricks. Will be jungle camping soon in Thailand & need a sil tarp to cover my 6'4" frame and Grand Trunk hammock that is 10' in length. Also, the tarp must have an over lap of 12" on either side and be made of the strongest/ lightest material on the market. what do you recommend?

    Kinda wild to see the differences in your tarp setup 11 years ago vs today. What lessons have you learned that affected your hang the most in that time? Figure 9s and surgical tube is a blast from the past. Lol. Have you found any differences in ice and snow cling between silnylon and DCF tarps for winter use?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 роки тому

      Not much. But I am pretty good at pitching a tarp after so many times.
      I've only used silnylon of silpoly in winter. But I think DCF sheds snow just fine but a lot depends on the steepness of the tarp pitch.

  • @chrisrust3688
    @chrisrust3688 10 років тому +1

    it there any certain reason why you made your snake tube out of bug netting it that for water eveperation purposes or is it what material you had lying around

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 років тому

      The directions I followed called for netting. I made some from silnylon as well. Either works and the netting does not do much for water evaporation.

    I am thinking about getting a Forest camera to set up around my camp site at night... That would be motion activated...just to see what type of critters come through my campsite at night when I'm on a Backpacking trips. GEE! It’s almost like you have a real tent, instead of a pretend one.

      ***** I have an Byer of Maine Amazonas hammock, but I will probably make a new hammock like Green Bean, the tarp that I'm saving for is the Kelty noah's tarp 12. You should do a tutorial on how to make a hammock like Green Bean. Thanks for the vid very helpful

    Hey shug! I've got a question for you on tarps.
    I was looking at the "adventure tarp 2" by terra nova.
    in your opinion would this tarp be good enough for an all round tarp for tarp camping and also a tarp for a warbonnet blackbird? If not what would you suggest as an allround Tarp?

    What's the mask you're wearing there at the end?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 років тому

      It is just a standard balaclava.

      @DraconianMeasures 10 років тому

      Sorry, I meant the mask you're wearing during the 8:30 serenade, with the nose vent- hadn't seen that before.

      Matthew Benevento It is a fleece face mask I picked up years ago. Not sure of the brand. They are all neoprene now.

    • @DraconianMeasures
      @DraconianMeasures 10 років тому

      Definitely going to consider taking a pair of scissors to my fleece balaclava to reduce the ever-annoying condensation effect. Thanks! And thanks for making these videos- I've been getting super excited about the viability of winter hammocking (as fun as building shelters has been these past two years). If you're ever in VT, there's a drink waiting for you- hot or cold, whatever the season calls for.
