The textures have definetily improved overall, the main issue for me is the color pallete, feels like theyve put a blue filter everything and it feels washed out
as you can see, the old one is not bad at all
it's less colorful which make it more realistic , i played both , the 2016 one was made on UNITY ENGINE i think , it had an awful anti-aliasing implementation , but other than that , it was ok graphics wise , but this one with UNREAL ENGINE 5 and its LUMEN lighting and ambiant occlusion and shadows effects , the immersion in this "Haunted house simulator" is 1000 times better , sadly they didn't use Nanites for the assets, environnement or textures and also didn't use Photogrammetry , but it's ok, the "Classic" UE textures get the job done , overall , a very good remake for a very good game !
Right, Bioshock like
It's called cinematic tone.
Overly used volumetric too. The window close where are these fog coming from ruined the whole visual of interior
For a game made in Unity in 2016, the graphic quality of the original is pretty insane.
Prefer the orginal portrayal of the childs room compared new one, game still looked good, shame about VR version being buggy
I like the original one. It looks more haunting and lonely and liminal. The remake looks washed out, murky at times although the textures are better. But, the feel and the impression still, the original is better.
The textures and lightning and reflections are better in the 2023 version, but the color grading is better in the 2016 version. I don't understand why everything has to be desaturated and grey in order for it to be more "realistic".
I fully agree. Reality might be a shitty game with lots of pay-to-win elements, but the graphics is splendid!
The 2016 graphics is more colorful, more alive...
The remake is a dark blue...
I like 2016's graphics more.
Yeah, its more horror like. that's the point.
@@mk4789 The old one could go full on horror colors when needed. The bright colors made you feel safe only to take that away with a jumpscare.
there are quite a lot of places in the original with good lighting, it gives a sense of security, and then some crap happens and you get scared shitless, as well as paintings with portraits of people who felt that we were being watched, in the new version they were removed in some places
Yeah, I was scared more by the original.
From what I've seen, I think the new one looks better in some places or some aspects, and the original looks better in some places or some aspects. The original is more vibrant, colorful which I absolutely love and something I wish they kept in the new one a little bit more! Of course the new one looks more realistic but I think we need to recognize that "better" doesn't HAVE to mean that something looks more real. Some people have a preference for the original's more colorful look and some for the new look, there's nothing wrong whatever your thoughts are. I'm just saying this since I noticed some unnecessarily rude comments towards others opinions over something so small. Take a breather and be nicer to each other y'all, okay? Hope you have an amazing rest of your day whoever reads this
Great comment bro. I played the 2023 version for the first time and liked it better in comparison, but I also understand why people love the 2016 version. Plus, no one took the old version away from them and they can play it again =)
I guess the change of color in the child’s bedroom is accurate since they wouldn’t have colored lighting back in the day 😭💀 but the purple gave it so much magic
The images are great but the spirit is gone .. We walk around with shadowed eyes ??! :D
Just the video I was looking for.
It's just amazing, thank you so much !
Seems like they added a layer of smoke everywhere makes it hard to notice anything. This can’t be right.
2023 looks more realistic, 2016 is more stylized.
The textures are great but the lighting is not. Its nice lighting in general, but the mood and atmosphere was so much better in the original. You can't just make everything dynamic and call it an improvement, especially in horror. Mood and atmosphere are paramount and hand placed and considered lighting is crucial. All of the little shadows and detail along with colored lighting is just gone. The shadows dancing on the floor, the pattern of shadows formed by the uneven glass globes on the lights, The lightening, all gone. Too much fog as well. Makes you feel like you have cataracts and masks the texture improvements. Nevermind the terrible gameplay changes like the tedious and not remotely terrifying pursuer boss mechanic along with the magic flashlight. Terrible decision there. I have to say that the original is the better experience in my mind. Thank you for the video!
agree , it would be no problems to add new mechanic with flashlight in the remake of the sequel (cause the sequel was different) but changing the mechanic and atmosphere of the first one is a complete disaster . NO !!! do not touch layers of fears 2016 !
Did they save on electricity ? The lamps barely shine in the remake. It reminds me of the story of horror films, when modern directors do not bother with lighting, but simply put a dark filter.
gas prices too damn high
artistic choice makes it seem more atmospheric, cold, empty, abandoned, etc probably more in line with their vision and subject matter
@@melxb "etc probably more in line with their vision and subject matter"
It's bad that this is not associated with a normal vision for the player. In their Blair Witch project, light, anti-aliasing, postprocessing and depth of field were rather poorly set. I had to poke around in the settings at the software level to make a normal "vision" and play quietly. There are enough examples of horror games in the gaming industry, where light and shadows are well placed from an artistic point of view, but at the same time the light sources are bright, not muted, as if you walk in black glasses. And a cold filter can be safely thrown through third-party programs. It's a matter of a couple of minutes. And here, what is this fog in the room? ahahaha I see here a lot of resource-hungry filters already ready to squander your video card
Well it takes place in the 1920s and many older bulbs pretty weak compared to newer 60-100 watt bulbs let alone modern LED lamps. The other things is UE5 has Lumen which seems to do wonders with lighting even without ray tracing and it seems much more realistic to me.
this feels so good! some look better in original some are more better in updated
Playing the remake right now. Some things are surely improved, some feel rather as downgrade. The original definitely works better as a whole, but that doesn't mean the remake is bad. Also, would be great if there were models and textures from the remake and the lighting from the original.
as person who has old version and watching difference via this video,it feels more like that older version looks better at someparts
Графика 2016 года намного лучше и сочнее чем в 2023 😊 да и сама музыка в оригинальной версии очень завораживающая!
I kinda prefer the non-washed out look of the original.
Yea, it's missing its sharpness and variety of colors
For me I like the remake, gives me the creeps
Trust me, the new one is more scarier, they’ve really done an intelligent job with the new one, from lighting to shadows, atmosphere, position of objects, it’s a pure improvement and the game getting matured
@vinmax7359 played it, it's very pretty but hardly scary
Seems to be a case of artistic direction being better in places for the old version while the new version looks better In places there are some places where the lighting isn’t quite as good. I never played 2 and I think I haven’t touched the original since 5/6 years ago on ps4 the price is cheap enough I’ll give it a go, at least to look at the amazing pieces dybowski was commissioned for this. P.s still worried the writers at bloober will cock up sh2 remake
3:50 missing corns & garlics... and in general why they remove and remodel some props in the UE5 version of the game compared to the original game?
The new style seems considerably darker than in the old game - it's almost too dark for me.
However, I really enjoyed Layers of Fear back then and am thinking about buying the new version. It was a fantastic gaming experience for me back then (along with SOMA). :D
I guess vibrant colors weren’t a thing in those days and the blue haze and mysterious fog was the norm.
It looks good, though, the darkness in the remake kinda help with realism...if it's too bright, you might see some imperfections like shadow not casting accurately, especially on like small objects (I mean, this game has a zoom feature so, yeah) as I heard they are only using Lumen at specific places. I wonder when we will have like full Nanite and Lumen upgrade, if modders can do that...I'm hyped.
we used Lumen in the entire game :D (I was part of the lighting team:)
@@wollman5537great work ziomku
why it looks a lot more blurry....
First! 👍🏻
The original looks better! The remake's environments look too dark. 😒
Looks realistic
You can turn up the brightness, the lighting in unreal engine is just more realistic, which makes things look a bit darker. The original was more stylized. I prefer the more realistic approach
@@Alex-ps9xg Just edit lighting and post processing settings in Unity
Transitioning from Warm Tones to Cool Tones, but I personally prefer Warm Tones. Not all horror games necessarily have to create icy-cold scenes.
i just finished the painter's story and I feel like it was more "rushed", like they were less "atmosphere" moments and they took out a lot of parts, and they were not a lot of music. However the new parts are really good and the remake is still great.
Out of curiosity, my boyfriend plays the newer version and he wonders if the original differed in gameplay at all. Did anything happen on the 2016 version that didn’t happen in the 2023 version?
Apparently they got rid of the running baby sequence
@@Wizzerman95 The running baby??? Wtf is that?
@Wizzerman95 yep that was removed. I was waiting for it and nothing. It was more funny than scary so that probably why it got removed 😂
If original version got more darker and set more light and light shaft, there would be small difference.
It's not just the lighting that's been changed. The gameplay and narrative design has also be tweaked and added with new stuff.
the 2016 one atmosphere still better for me , graphics are not the most important thing in a game
@@aliasalex8499 No, but they weren't just focusing on graphics. Lighting, particles, and other effects was also a big focus and intentional change from the devs.
It definitely feels more cinematic than the original's more natural feel, which depending on the player can hurt the effect of the horror.
@@ianmitchell5979 i think everybody is different , for me the 2023 is just dark and boring , there is not the same atmosphere and arts that was in the 2016 one
Texture great but the atmosphere and color I enjoy more in the 2016. The home has more of a warmth lived in feeling, but gives off the more uneasy feeling. Like this house looks like its inviting and lived it, but find it empty of anyone in it. That enhances that something terrible happened here to give off that feeling.
Spooky, unsetting looking places that you see already sets your mind to that expectation. A warm inviting place but devoid of the ones who made it that way is more unsettling.
Why remake removes all the light sources ?
I never played the original Layers of Fear games and I only got the new remake to test out Unreal Engine 5 and to see if I can trust Bloober with the Silent Hill 2 remake. After watching this video, I think the original looks better. Even though in the remake the graphics are improved, the lighting is so dim that it doesn't even feel like anybody lives there. I guess they wanted to give it more of a creepy horror vibe, but it felt more washed out and boring. It felt like a drag to finish the game because if they wanted to make a horror walking simulator then they atleast needed to make the game look appealing to the eyes so I can feel motivated to explore the house. Layers of Fear 2's remake on the other hand looks amazing and has more of a unique artistic vibe to it that keeps me feeling immersed
You couldve just used the hdrp in unity because your missing things like color, the thunder and lightning, the small detail of the rain going down the window, your character moves smooth in ue 5 but that that takes away from the eeriness of the game cause it looks like the player is just floating
much more atmospheric now, just wish the gameplay and such was better, that's why it would make for a much better experience in VR... hopefully comes to psvr2 and steamvr
Layers of Blue.
Now I am playing the real deal with raytracing on (Radeon 6600) and the new house of the painter looks like a dream. The pictures and paintings on the walls looked slightly blurry in the original version while in the new game these paintings and pieces of art are so crisp and sharp and high resolution one can admire every little detail. It´s not only new lighting effects but all textures and almost all polygon mesh 3D models of objects have been remade too.
The (in my opinion) very annoying and cumbersome VR-style controls of the original game.... for example every door knob every drawer has to be grabbed followed by going a few steps backwards to get a door or cabinet open.... can now be opened with one button or mouse click. The various story and key objects like liquor bottles sheets of paper brushes and stuff can still be grabbed and looked at in it´s full new visual glory. Many new beautyful graphics effects are there.
A lovely remaster of a great psychological horror game, that´s how a good remaster is made. Good to see that a few of the best games of the previous great era like Witcher 3 and Layers of Fear got such a wonderful remaster.
Fun fact: The new floor lamp to the right of the table in the first scene (remake) is not switched on, but when going close and looking down into the lamp one can see that the light bulb in this lamp is glowing. No visual glitch in any game can escape me ;P
I thought it was my pc but the textures look a bit blurry, I think I've seen better scenes in unreal 4
Does the remake have a physical copy already?
Nope :( only digital
Pretty much nobody uses physical copy's today so like no games actually do that
the new one feels foggy and colorless.. to me it feels like i got bland
Is it worth buying? I’ve never played the series. From what I understand it comes with everything.
Its better to buy them separately in my opinion
They have the best horror stories i seen
That's not a big enough difference to make me want to pay to play it again.
Unity ones don't even look bad even after some years
I would have expected more for the 2023 version, i mean the unreal engine 5 is capable to do way more details
Unity 2019.4.40 vs Unreal Engine 5 2023 ..also bitte
Ohh ok I thought it looked different! The enhancements are beautiful! I feel like they added a lot to his drunken stupor. When I play I feel freakin drunk. Stunning game I love every bit of it!
why remake across 7 year????
Оригинал выглядит лучше!🙃
The lights of the 2023 are like all WHITE? Most houses have yellow lighting to not make it look so cold.. I do think the old one was better
Shadows and lighting effects are cool and all but honestly the original looks better.
Guau.... Menuda mejoría con el nuevo, no lo noté porque llevo tiempo si ver el original, pero se nota q leguas la diferencia, me gusta muchísimo 😮😁
Es como si solo hubieran cambiado la paleta de colores.
It missing the point of the rich man who got crazy. The bright places were representing exactly that. How the man had outstanding well being but got utterly insane and lost everything.
I hate how small everything looks in the updated one
Is a remake?
4:58 the old version looks way better
POR MOMENTOS SE VEIA MAS LINDO EL 2016
I gotta say, The 2016 version has more appeal.
Yes, The new version has more depth and “Ray tracing” (pbllllsss), but it’s completely disconnected, immersing breaking.
I don’t feel on this release the way I did on the first one…Not at all
It’s all wrong
Most comments here are neglecting any sort of understanding of the purpose of the new Unreal Engine, it's using new sophisticated lighting techniques and a plethora of new wonderful graphical tools. You might not like it stylistically, and that's fine...but it is more realistic and grounded in reality, which I feel horror fans should appreciate to some extent in certain titles. I think this titles benefits from the update. Either way...don't like it? Don't play it. Simple. I appreciate studios trying to do more high quality remakes especially with new engine tech.
I hate this RE2 Remake-ification of horror games where striking and contrasting colour palettes and gorgeous environments are made to look completely washed out and dull which makes every environment feel the same. The biggest offender is that striking pink colour palette in the baby's room. It looks ugly and boring af in the remaster.
Well today is your lucky day my friend! Because guess what!? YOU DON'T HAVE TO PLAY THEM IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM...
@@gimptoast YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPLY TO MY COMMENT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT 🤝
@@yashmathur2 Yeah, I don't understand this mindset of blindly praising every game or remake that comes out. Its like any form of criticism is taken as a personal insult and you shouldn't comment if you have anything negative to say. But unwarranted blind praise and fanboying is always welcomed! Its consumerism gone off the rails. It doesn't lead to better products either ironically.
I have been highly critical of this remake mostly because of my fondness for the original work. It wasn't perfect by any means and a remake could have been an opportunity to really strengthen the game in its weaker areas. That is not what we were delivered however.
Slapping some trendy buzzwords onto things and putting it in a shiny new engine doesn't make it a direct improvement. Its like these people hear the words "ray tracing" and start drooling. Madness.
@@chadkleckler5180I completely agree about remakes having the golden opportunity to strengthen and improve the weaker areas of the original games. I mean we saw Resident Evil set the golden standard for remakes itself with the REmake.
Soul / Soulless
praticamente hanno aggiunto la nebbia🤔🤔🤔🙄🙄🙄
Definitely a downgrade. Higher fidelity and graphics, less art and atmosfere. Just dark and boring...
Maybe the main problem in the new is that its dark you couldnt see a thing sometimes
agree with u at 100%
Original looks better
I still think the OG looks way better than the Unreal remake
Not much of an improvement honestly though that is to be expected for a 2016 game. The lighting and shadows look more natural though now that they're softer.
REMAAAAAAKE!!! It's in the title 🤷🏻
So tired of these game developers slapping new coats of paint on their game some years later as a cash.
It just means you didn't do it right the first time.
It looks dark cuz of natural lighting
Squint: The Game
Sound like creepy
The lack of ultrawide support in the remake is absurd
2016 is better
Delusional
Smokeing the good stuff

Delusional.

Of course, you are one of those people who prefer the original no matter what.
@@atpham6096 don't be so quick to judge; I've never even played the game, I'm just an artist that knows what's right and what's not in terms of visuals as well as sound. I could say that people that prefer the newer one do so because they're such fans of the original that they are biased in favor of a re release/remake because they can't wait to get new content of their beloved franchise...
Totally agreed. The new one looks dull and washed out
'Promosm'
The 2023 version is way better, tons of raytracing, every single object and even the uneven wood paneling is casting a realistic shadow. But in the 2023 version the default brightness is maybe a bit too dark, +10% or +20% of gamma is recommended.
You are right it is a bit too dark. If you play with HDR you can't even adjust gamma which is BS because it is way too dark on my monitor. It is okay in SDR. But the funny thing is that it's not really ray tracing. They only used ray tracing for reflections here. The other stuff is just Lumen.
of course its 7 years later but the question is do u prefer to play the 2016 or 2023 ? graphics is not so important to make a great game , look fortnite (its just a plus) however the atmosphere and gameplay yes , for me the 2016 version is way better than 2023 , more immersive , more deep and more élégant . the new mechanic ruined the remake of the first one.
It's another awful unjustified redesign, remember Portal 2 to Portal 1.
Unity version better
jest problem remake wcale nie wyglada lepiej ani za nadto nowoczesniej . szkoda jedynke przedzedlem ale remake nie mam chyba po co
