    I don’t want to get rid of scrums but originally it was just a way of restarting a game, what I don’t like is that a knock on or forward pass can quickly be changed into a penalty by the scrum isn’t having possession good enough & teams using the scrum just to have space to create running rugby & put the ball in straight.

  • @iallso1
    @iallso1 10 днів тому +1

    Totally agree with the points you make here. Iwould take one of your points further, and that is stopping the clock not just when the scrum is being set, but when the ball is out of play at lineouts and when kickers take forever to take a kick, including the time spent celebrating tries.

      They are also pandering to the U.S. market, trying to attract more of them into it, which is a bad move as they (the US) would end up pushing stupid other rules to suit them and further change the game. This ruling is stupid. The last World Cup had several fantastic edge of the seat games. If SA is dominating stop crying and learn how to beat them. Scrumming has always been the Boks super power, but history shows other sides still beat them. Looks to me like it’s NH crybaby antics. Changing rules to win won’t work. Exactly. There’s a reason that we love Union and those roars and behemoths like Beast, Os du Randt, Spicy Plum, Ox, John Smit et al. The scrum is integral and since Willemse’s call in that quarter-final, France have had sour grapes and then of course we knocked over England successively, ol’ Bill has been muttering down the corridors of Pembroke Street.
    Rugby is violent chess and we reward strategy and tact but also power and dominance, so teams quake in their boots against SA, Argentina and Georgia because they all have dominate scrums and can use that as an attacking platform.
    Let’s see it play out and the loopholes used around the scrum and deliberate fouls and watch the teams’ strategies adapt.

    If it meant the demise of the chest-beaters then so beit.

  • @expressoevangelism80

    The scrum, as we have known it in recent times has been administered to become something it should never have been.
    Scrums are awarded as a result of a minor offence, however as a result of the unique unspoken games that props play between themselves, what has developed has been obscure awards for penalties, which can effect the results of the games. This does seem to be an unbalanced consequence to a slight forward pass.
    Thinking back to scrums at school boy level, they just got together, stooped down, ball down the middle, hook and shove. Back rows break away as quick as possible to nail the 10. It didn’t take too long, and a couple of resets were all that was ever needed.
    Looking at Genge, as to how his game is developing in recent times, that is interesting and better for the game as a whole.
    Union over League every time, however Union has been shooting itself in the foot with recent attempts to ‘improve’ the game.
    Perhaps if props spent their time pre match having arm wrestling matches in the bar, then that would get that part out of their system, and then we could all watch a good game of rugby afterwards?

    The scrum is a complete yawn. It can take five minutes or more out of game time and is often used as awayofwinningcheap penalties in a way that was never intended.
    The attacking side should have the option of reducing the scrum to two rows or one row, just like line outs.
    If the first scrum attempt does not succed the ref should have the option of reducing the number of rows as he sees fit.
    I'm fed up paying £90 to watch several resets of a scrum, and then it can happen time and again.

  • @dmng64

    if the law is going to be enacted a scrum option should be available from a free kick by the attacking side inside the 22. Many years ago off a free kick you would tap the ball , one pass, drop goal. We may see more of that. Next drop goals and penalties will drop back to 2 points.

    The other point people forget about making RL faster and faster is that not only did the body shapes become uniform, but it decimated participation from vets, over-35s etc. Simply got too fast. The knock on was those players dropped out early and fewer got diverted to coaching or reffing in later life. And that knocked on into youth teams......Which is why RL has such low player nos in the UK. Let us hope RU learns the lesson from RL's mistakes.

    You have a scrum and behind the scrum is the backline. Get rid of the scrum and where do the forwards go? Well, they end up in the backline and that's and when you get rid of backline play

    Absolutely agree with Nigel Owens. World rugby will in changing the scrum destroy the game.

  • @calross7143

    When you limit and eventually take scrums out of rugby, you have league rugby.
    I would suggest they rather apply the rules...like enforcing straight feed in the middle of a scrum to ensure teams actually have the opportunity to compete for the ball at scrums and line-outs, ensuring players are behind the kicker, especially at re-starts etc.
    And consider stopping the time when the ball is not in play, like with line-outs or scrum sets...will stop teams from wasting time by causing scrums to collapse etc.
    The team with the ball in hand should be given the advantage, more than the team defending (that could help limit all the kicking and the mindset to give the ball to the other team and then put pressure and hope they make a mistake), and it would commit more forwards to rucks and mauls and allow more space for backlines to create moves. And maybe line-outs should have all the forwards in it to ensure space for backlines on attack...
    Anyway, just a few thoughts...

    About time this change was made.
    Scrums are now ridiculous.
    Watch the game from even 25 years ago when the scrums were over before the current teams even get to the mark.
    If we continue with scrum options perhaps we should again insist that a Goal i.e. a converted try has to be scored to be able to win a game.
    Current scrum laws make the game very boring most of the time when it can take a long time to get a scrum completed.
    A quick free kick will obviate the worry about a fully set up defence being in place.

    Changing the offside line to the middle of the tunnel is baffling. Why? Surely it will suffocate backline play. As far as the laws on protecting the scrumhalf, why would you want to give him even more time to check for seagulls and draw a map of the surroundings? Make him get rid of the ball like a hot potato.

    The best way to get people interested is to educate them . Sell the game, spend money and advertise it. The Americas are discovering rugby, Japan loves rugby...... Sell it. I hate this but sport is a business, treat it like one and sell, sell, sell. Sell it and people want to then know the intricacies of the sport and then appreciate the finer points.
    Don't change the game, change the fans, level up.

    Maybe it would be a good idea to stop giving penalties to the side with the stronger scrum. If they dominate the scrum they should win the ball and play with it. Instead, the stronger scrums just play for a penalty so that they can kick downfield for a lineout.

  • @konradyearwood5845
    @konradyearwood5845 23 дні тому

    I am not in agreement with the rule but for a different reason. The games is for all shapes and sizes but since at the top level there are now eight available replacements forwards have become huge as most of the pack only has to play part of the game. Do away with the non-injury replacements and the forwards will have to trim down.

    As a prop who played in the 1990s, I find the modern scrum a joke. It has become a means of conning the ref into awarding a penalty. It is impossible to win a ball against the head. I see penalties awarded when obviously the penalty should have gone the other way. The scrum has been part of the game since its inception. The modern scrum is a debasement of the traditional set piece.

    Who cares what he thinks better to ask the big rugby fans who follow and support if they would continue watching never needed the others over the last 80 + years. In that time we’ve some great games with the same rules over the years and rugby has always been a great game without all the know all’s having a say. I only agree with the high tackle improvement where a neck can be broken. Let world rugby make their own league and see how they get on.

      There will still be scrums to restart the game after a knock on but there should not be any penaltys from a scrum just a tap and go if the scrum collaspes no resets

    • @billnortman5331
      @billnortman5331 27 днів тому

      If there is no penalties just a tap and go then the falling back rule must also be amended because all the scrum players will either infront of the kicker or not backed enough so wich side is then infringing the rule and then gets a penalty kick
