Whenever I hear this, I sing Mikey Mills' part. Until they released this song I merely liked REM very much. But when I first heard this on the radio, i morphed into a slavish adoring fangirls.
Agree about lyrics...Stipe said he often did not understand what the songs were about that he wrote. He also said the lyrics were not supposed to make sense rather it was the feeling they invoked that was most important.....i listened to these guys in 80s as well growing up in North Carolina and had no idea what he was singing about...cheers
"I saw a treehouse on the outskirts of the farm The power lines have floaters so the airplanes won't get snagged Bells are ringing through the town again The children look up, all they hear is sky-blue, bells ringing"
heidigretel, I've been binging your archives since I was 16 (I'm 24 now) and I was the only kid I knew that was into R.E.M. Thanks for sharing all of rhese gems!
Yes. What a disappointment Obama became. His first order of business after leaving office was to engaging on a speaking tour of Wall Street organizations so they could pay him back for all of the protections and preferential treatment they received during his administration.
Might be my favorite REM song. That snare drum was always weak post-Bill Berry. Soft sound not crisp, snappy and strong like Bill's. Good drummer otherwise.
@@EDAR96 Families as well ... I've basically been told not to bring it up. Of course, we're diametrically opposed to each other politically. Religion as well ...no go.
It's not for the benefit of the audience. Stipe had a captive audience and a microphone and took the opportunity to get something off his chest. I like artists that don't even talk to the audience, except maybe to introduce the band.
Can't imagine how some of these negative Nellys feel about 2 new Georgia senators and Uncle Joe in the White House. REM spent a career pro environment, pro motor voter, pro LGBTQ, and yet good music attracts all.
The entire REM library is incredible but I will always be partial to these early songs. The IRS years were the best
I swear when I first heard Driver 8, that Who is this feeling hit me....I grew up very Blue Collar.
Mike Mills' harmonies are incredible. My favourite REM song, I fell in love with it some thirty-whatever years ago.

1985 hot dusty Missouri summer. Amazing how this song spoke to me when I practically could not make out a word Stipe was singing.
I’m a native Missouri boy. Totally understand listening to music riding on them back roads.
You both are so very lucky to have such wonderful memories of a better time in US I guess. A great country.
My brother fronted a cover band and we had serious disagreements regarding Driver 8 lyrics.

This song brings me great happiness just hearing the band

siempre me arrepenti que no fui a verlos y ahora me entero de que tocaron mi tema favorito
Beatiful song...Beatiful band....jeffy R.E.M Brasil Criciúma City
The most important band in my life ❤
Me too James.
R.I.P. Bill Rieflin ... Great drummer !
They have a lot of greats but this is top 2 for me.
This!, fall on me, cuyahoga
Can't decide between this or Losing My Religion so I guess I've got a top 2 also. Then can't decide between So Central Rain n Fall On Me as my 3 or 4
Top 1?
Mine as well, this and sidewinder sleeps.

Miss these guys
I like when he repeats “they haunt me….”
The most memorable concert I've been to so far.
Amazing to have been a kid at this show in Buenos Aires back in the day. Drive 8 always one of my favorites. Thank you for posting.
This song has so much meaning to me when I first heard it in 1984.

Great song, but Buck needs to play it through a Fender Twin, and not the Vox.
Love Bill Berry, but man can this drummer play!
Bill Reiflin from Ministry
Ministry, king crimson and REM !
Driver8 take a break
Totally understandable Heidi, but boo hoo!!!!! Another Fantastic post, thank you xxx
Been playing this song 20 years and still don't know what the hell a Go Tell Crusade is.
a campaign to spread the word of the Lord
The GoTell Crusade is an evangelical Christian organization that carries out large revivals in small towns.
Was he referring to the election of President Obama when he said “and what it may become in three days?”
Yes. What a disappointment Obama became. His first order of business after leaving office was to engaging on a speaking tour of Wall Street organizations so they could pay him back for all of the protections and preferential treatment they received during his administration.

I love this song, but...I don't get the connection. "Driver 8" is a train song. So what does it have to do with the election of Barack Obama?
I think the prospect of getting closer to "our destination."

It's all about being political....love the music hate the politics. Same with U2.

That intro has dated poorly. He is referring to Obama's election - that didn't work so well.
And why he is talking American politics to an audience in Argentina anyway?
Stipe is deluded
Yes it did Obama was a good president

Oh no he was pitching for Obama ...
Fuck
He catches and pitches 😂
Great song but just bloody well sing it, forget the stupid politics at the start. Melon!
Pimping for Obama. Sad.
I take it Stipe was referring to the upcoming Obama debacle/presidency?
This didn't age very well now did it Mikey?
Liberals are hilarious.
Your a fucking wanker! Magat
Take ur political crap elsewhere
Well done Scott you've managed to sound stupid and arrogant all at once!
It didn't age well! The song does represent that hope of the American dream. If Biden is elected we are doomed. Trump 2020
Lol! I suspect that Stipe probably didn't vote for Trump
probably the worst performance ive heard of this masterpiece.
you are very welcome : )
