Hugh, You're the BEST REVIEWER of 360 cameras on UA-cam. It's because your videos are NOT SPONSORED & the MOST THOROUGH on this subject. For example, in this video you cover low light situation, point out the flaw of the lens guard, compare it to Iphone 15. No other reviewer on UA-cam has done that as of today April 16th, 2024. I have made the decision to film with my phone instead of buying this tool after watching your video. We need MORE REVIEWERS LIKE YOU. No wonder, you've got 204K subscribers. Thank you for including the detail about continuous recording rather than missing footage every 30 minutes (no one else really covered this!). That was my biggest complaint with the x3, happy to see it fixed.
It's also my biggest issue with the Evo. My primary use is choir recordings of up to 3 hours. Currently I try to work around it by recording over cable from a Theta V (USB live mode), but that doesn't replace stereo 180. Notably it eventually runs out of charge even with USB power and wireless modes just make that worse.
@@hughhou did you test the overheat problem indoor? or under "normal" exterior temperature? This has been my bigger problem with the RS One 1-inch 360. Thank for the review and tips !!

(2) one with wrong setting to compare side by side "BEST quality" of X4 & RS One 1-inch (but had RS One 1-inch set at 30p and should have known that even though Insta360 calls RS One 1-inch both 6K 24p & 6K 30 as 6k, they are NOT the same res, so ended up comparing best apple to not best orange w X4 at max & RS One at LESS than max, and mismatched reframe crop factors). SO THANK you Hugh, for accurate comparisons! One can tell (e.g. at 10:03) just by looking at the relative position of the circular gravel (hearth?) for each camera that Hugh is showing you the correctly cropped resolution that he says he is for each camera. Thank you. But, what would be really a bonus would be (ex. at 28:40 lens guard vs no lens guard) if you could (in future similar comparisons) also include a seamless slow "frame wipe" comparison of the two side by side shots so that we could even better see if there truly is or is not any difference between the two (e.g. can we see any distortion difference or the seam move or the sharpness or color shift as you wipe left/right). Just a thought for an added comparison technique (only seen right here, that no one else uses). Thank Hugh.
Another awesome video Hugh! I can't wait until I get mine in a few days. Question: If I bought two of these can I film VR180 like you did with the 2x insta360 go 2's? Pro 2 is still going to be better as the pixels is not spread out in 360 - it divided by 6 piece so it will be light year sharper. I can do a follow comparison but I am very sure Pro 2 is better.
Have you tried to combine it with a RODE NT-SF1, so you can matching the audio directing with the video direction? Would love to see / hear it, and how you did it as well of cause 😊
Hello Hugh, do you set EV to - 0,3 on the drone on auto or manual? I bought the Marut mount. Waiting for delivery so i can use it with my Mavic 3 pro ❤
Thanks for the feedback, I ordered it to test it in my 360 videos, 8k is the game changer. Have you compared it with the insta360 pro 2? Are there any rumors of an insta360 pro 3 that would benefit from Insta360's advances?
@@hughhou I'm waiting for my X4 camera to arrive on Monday, and I'll also be comparing 360 video and 360 photos with the Pro 2. But your tests are so clear and precise with an objective vision that I can't wait to see your feedback.
I bought (and haven't opened) the RS One inch last week. Looks like I'm taking it back. Thank you! BTW - I took some of your other videos and applied Topaz Video AI -- absolutely stunning. It made Dolce Mia look almost indistinguishable from real life and it almost leveled the playing field between the X3 footage and the $5000 Insta 360 Pro footage. Great channel - keep it up!
Great to hear! Yes, V5 is even crazier! X4 8K is BETTER than Pro 2. Insta360 might not want me to say it, but their prosumer camera is out matching their professional camera now... We need a Pro 3 in freaking 12K if possible...
@@_Oregon_Sunday_Drives_360 or just make a slightly larger version of the X4 with larger sensors...maybe one inch for $800 or four-thirds for $1000-$1200
@matthewturco156 iam in the same spot: bought a RS one inch... damaged it (my 2 year old son) 3 weeks after ownership... had to deside: do i loose 1000Euro, or buy i a replacement-lens for 600Euro i bought the replacementlense, so i spend 1600Euro for the 1inch sofar.. and now: there is the X4 ... ARGH... i have a question for you: iam interested in Topaz Video AI as well.. have a nvidia 4080 how fast or slow is it ? i use Gigapixel for 360 Pictures with good results.. but i fear that Topaz Video AI would cause hours of hours of rendering ????
@@Kraeuterbutter Depends heavily on the settings, but for many, you can expect a few fps - meaning about 10-20% real time. Although the 360 footage is even slower. My Mac is about 1/3 the speed of an NVIDIA card, so it is definitely something to plan around.
@hughhou thanks and I did watch that - I saw your comments on image quality but still a bit unsure - if you were shooting a video inside a student classroom for example would you go with the x4 or 1 inch and upscale using topaz ?
Thank you for the quickly released, comprehensive, and honest review of the x4! Wow! 😍🤯 I’m looking forward to the sunset video. Am looking to capture driving footage during sunrise/sunset with changing light conditions and am curious on best way to do that.
Hugh, my friend! Great review as always! I have the RS One Inch 360 and i already read below that you dont think the RS2 is comming anytime soon, so what do you think i should do? Should i buy this X4 or wait for another semi professional 360 camera? Wich one do you think i should wait for? Also, i am upscaling the footage from my RS to 8K and i am pretty happy with the result.
@@hughhou thanx for that.. i try to keep my legs still and stay with my RS 1" 360 i paid 1600Euro for why so much? bought it for 1000 Euro, my 2 year old son destroyed it 3 weeks after.. had to deside: 1000 Euro lost, or spend another 600 Euro for a replacement-lens so i have a camera.. so i have now the 1 RS for 1600Euro on THIS video here i see, that the stiching line on the ground is very bad with the RS 1" 360 its nearly several meters miss-aligend, double line on the floor outside your backyard the same impression i have with my 1": with the X3 i have stiching-artefacts when to close to the camera.. but with the 1-RS i get a Blury-zone.. even when the distance is far more than "close to camera" stiching is way not thatgood as on my One X, X2 and X3 😞 otherwise i like the camera, specially at night
Was waiting to get the Canon 8K 3D 360 camera but since there are some events coming up soon to take videos off, I decided to get the X4. Seams like a lot of people are in the same boat who's wanting to buy either the Qoocam 3 ultra or the Canon 3D 360 camera. Perfect timing for Insta360 to release this camera before the other 2.
Yes indeed. Insta360 came out of the blue. Still a great buy as both Ultra or Canon is gonna be more expensive than the X4. So even someone get the X4, they can still upgrade to later if they decide to.
Is the premium lens guard (or normal lens guard) waterproof!. I want to use it while surfing, but i dont want water between the lens cover. I already scratched my X2 lens without a lens guard..
I want to record soccer matches in 180 view which makes the playback for the whole pitch possible. 360 works fine but a lot of useless area shown in the back lens makes the video unnecessarily bulky. Is there any way for making non VR 180 video? And which camera should I choose?
I think you should try VR180 camera - 360 will be waste pixels. Even you don’t need 3D or VR180, it’s always good to capture them and in case future Vision Pro become affordable you can easy turn your 180 into spatial video without any extra work.
Thank you! this is by far the best review. all of the other reviews sounded like an infomercial and you were actually honest and really tested the camera
Thank you for sharing your setup! But I've noticed that some youtubers are pairing the DJI Mic 2 with the Insta360 X4. Have you considered trying out this combination?
DJI Mic 2 work as well with recent update. But they do not have timecode and in my opinion not sound that good compared to others professionals setup that have years of experience only in the audio world.
Thank you so much for the amazing work you put in your videos. I’ve been on the edge on buying a 360 camera and I’m worried about the complexity of exporting 360 camera footage to my computer and iPhone. I have major life events happening this year like getting married. So I want to capture those moments so I could relive/replay them in the future. First thing that comes to mind is getting a 360 camera, but I’m worried those footage will remain in the memory card forever because it’s too difficult to digest/edit.
This is getting relative easy now with X4. For example, my latest tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/StkQLzd7UxY/v-deo.htmlsi=6xRByaBRTprqPT5D - I shot on a 360 camera and just draw a box around me and track the whole way. So I put the camera down, capture it while I am doing other thing without a camera operator or asking anyone to hold the phone for me. Capture it in 8K and then just use AI track it to create all those camera movement you see in this video. Something it is very easy to have these features as content creators that also has a full time job. So with AI, it should get your footage out pretty easy. A computer is recommanded tho but your phone should work as well.
I believe v60 or the most expensive one. I got the most expensive one in 512G. You need that to avoid overheating problem and do not drop frame in 8K. It is huge file size and data rate
Thanks for this comparison Hugh! I am looking forward to my x4 which i will get tomorrow. Do you know if the insta360 extended selfie stick is sturdy enough for the X4?
Yes but it bend lol. You can see a shot here with my super tiny and on a tiny planet edge of the clip. You saw the blended 3 meter pole. Use the 270Pro if you don't want bending. You need carbon fiber pole
@@hughhou You can, but it's recommended at least 60fps for watching in headset. I'll probably do 8k for daytime and 5.7k for night shots. Still trying to figure out when Meta TV will support AV1.
Do you think the X4 will be able to handle filming driving at night on rural roads? We have a lightbar on the front of the car but wonder if it'll have difficulty handling the stark differences in brightness. We don't have very high requirements for quality/noise, as it'll be mostly for fun, but wondering if it'll at least be somewhat useable?
I don't think so. The dynamic range is too much. No action camera can handle what you describe. I will go with some like like the DJI Pocket 3 or just use a Full Frame DSLR or Mirrorless.
@@hughhou Okay well that is good to know, sadly a 360° camera is the only thing that can do what we want here. Do you at least think the X4 would be the best option of currently available 360° cameras to not produce a blown-out image of the parts that are lit up?
Wow, what a super detailed review. Your side-by-side comparison at 9:00 is amazing. It's pretty clear to me that the X4 is a huge improvement, especially when you realize that it's a 360° camera. I'm also pretty impressed by the low-light capabilities and well, what can I say: I think the next camera I'll buy will be the X4. Thanks for this detailed review man.
Great review as always Hugh, I have a question if you don't mind. When reviewing the photos on the camera can we review 72mp and export the 72mp photos as this was not possible on the X3?
How does the footage look in the AVP? I found that spatial video shot on AVP and iPhone didn't look that great because they aren't even shot in 4K. Does the footage of the X4 look better in the AVP?
Hey Hugh, I'm a big fan of your videos and your content inspired me to dive deeper in the 360 videography world late last year. I remember some of your older videos about the Qoocam 8K and was wondering about your thoughts when comparing the Qoocam 8K (also the enterprise version) with the Insta X4. Lokking forward to hearing your opinion! Cheers!
I didnt watch this all becuase aim at work but can it pause a recording and then resume plus can it add on to a recording that has already been taken like the 360 Ace pro? I did order this X4 and am very excited for it.
I wondered that, too. So I went back and he did say it, and you can read it off the drone arms: DJI Mavic 3. I have a Mavic Air 2, so I'm a little worried but we'll see.
@@hughhou Have they let you play with the Ultra? Haven't seen anything mentioned. Also quite surprised that the Qoocam 3 was better in still photos even with the lower megapixel count.

Good idea. But recording gryo data might be tough. That is a Qoocam 3 feature as X4 is still do not care too much about immersive filmmaking.
Your joie de vivre is inspiring, Hugh!
Haha thank you!!
Hello Hugh, do you set EV to - 0,3 on the drone on auto or manual? I bought the Marut mount. Waiting for delivery so i can use it with my Mavic 3 pro ❤
auto - manual is risky for most of my flight where I only have 1 shot to nail the shot.
@@hughhou Thanks, will set it to auto 👍❤️
Thanks for the feedback, I ordered it to test it in my 360 videos, 8k is the game changer. Have you compared it with the insta360 pro 2? Are there any rumors of an insta360 pro 3 that would benefit from Insta360's advances?
I think Pro 2 is still gonna be light year better than X4 - since it is 6 lens. But I should do it soon.
@@hughhou or just make the Insta360 Titan $5000 instead of $15,000 haha
@@_Oregon_Sunday_Drives_360 or just make a slightly larger version of the X4 with larger sensors...maybe one inch for $800 or four-thirds for $1000-$1200
@matthewturco156
iam in the same spot: bought a RS one inch...
damaged it (my 2 year old son) 3 weeks after ownership... had to deside: do i loose 1000Euro, or buy i a replacement-lens for 600Euro
i bought the replacementlense, so i spend 1600Euro for the 1inch sofar..
and now: there is the X4 ... ARGH...
i have a question for you: iam interested in Topaz Video AI as well..
have a nvidia 4080
how fast or slow is it ?
i use Gigapixel for 360 Pictures with good results..
but i fear that Topaz Video AI would cause hours of hours of rendering ????
@@Kraeuterbutter Depends heavily on the settings, but for many, you can expect a few fps - meaning about 10-20% real time. Although the 360 footage is even slower. My Mac is about 1/3 the speed of an NVIDIA card, so it is definitely something to plan around.
Can I use a wireless microphone only using USB C or do I need an adapter? Is the microphone powered via USB?
Would you say better than 1 inch as few other reviews preferring 1 inch for video ? We mainly shoot indoors but full light - schools etc
This one should answer this question: ua-cam.com/video/bES2KMfZOFY/v-deo.html
@hughhou thanks and I did watch that - I saw your comments on image quality but still a bit unsure - if you were shooting a video inside a student classroom for example would you go with the x4 or 1 inch and upscale using topaz ?
Great breakdown. Thank you very much for such a thorough overview. 🤗
You are very welcome!
Thank you for the quickly released, comprehensive, and honest review of the x4! Wow! 😍🤯
I’m looking forward to the sunset video. Am looking to capture driving footage during sunrise/sunset with changing light conditions and am curious on best way to do that.
Coming soon! Right after I catch up some sleep!
Keep your RS 1" 360 - it is still really good and better than X4 in many ways. No need to update.
@@hughhou thanx for that.. i try to keep my legs still and stay with my RS 1" 360 i paid 1600Euro for
why so much?
bought it for 1000 Euro, my 2 year old son destroyed it 3 weeks after..
had to deside: 1000 Euro lost, or spend another 600 Euro for a replacement-lens so i have a camera..
so i have now the 1 RS for 1600Euro
on THIS video here i see, that the stiching line on the ground is very bad with the RS 1" 360
its nearly several meters miss-aligend, double line on the floor outside your backyard
the same impression i have with my 1":
with the X3 i have stiching-artefacts when to close to the camera..
but with the 1-RS i get a Blury-zone.. even when the distance is far more than "close to camera"
stiching is way not thatgood as on my One X, X2 and X3
😞
otherwise i like the camera, specially at night
Very thorough review as always, Hugh. Thank you for sharing and for your hard work!
My pleasure!
Are you able to live stream to UA-cam or any of the other platforms with this?
This is coming next. There are still some I did not cover in this initial review - it is just too much new features lol.
Thank you! Keep up the great reviews on immersive hardware!
Thank you Mike!
Really nice video, Hugh. Thanks man. 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wonderful video, well detailed. Watched till end, liked and subscribed 👍🏻❤️
Thank you so much 👍
Is the premium lens guard (or normal lens guard) waterproof!. I want to use it while surfing, but i dont want water between the lens cover. I already scratched my X2 lens without a lens guard..
None of them is. Use the underwater dive case also mentioned here. It is SEA water proof - I use it for Surfing myself.
@@hughhou So, currently there is no solution for non VR 180 degree video shooting, right?
Thumbs up! Great review! Not those reviewers who try to get free stuff by giving positive reviews...
I appreciate that!
Do you think the rs3 mini is enough for r5 and dual fisheye for travel? Love for Kimchi❤
RS3 Mini - not the new one right? I think so. It is just not smaller enough for my taste lol.
Yes, not the newest rs4, although they are quite similar in price.
Definitely the best insta360 x4 promo video I've ever watched. I watched it without blinking my eyes
Thank you! this is by far the best review. all of the other reviews sounded like an infomercial and you were actually honest and really tested the camera
Thank you glad you think so!
Thank you very much for the wonderful and professional review!
Glad it was helpful!
What is the best manual settings on the x4? On shutter, iso,ev,wb when weather is sunny?
ISO 100, Shutter is what ever your scene need and use auto WB and make sure sharpness is medium or low and do post sharpening in studio of your NLE
Oh make sure your video quality is high or the highest bitrate option - in settings
Thank you Hugh! Just ordered one
Great work Hugh!
Thank you!!
Great video, 8k outdoor heating is what I was looking for, you are the only one who addressed it properly 👍
Glad it helped
The beat review. Definitely deserves a follow 💪🏼💪🏼
I appreciate that!
This video is a review from a top 360 camera reviewer!
Thank you!!
Well, done! Best review so far and I've seen 14.
Wow thank you!! There is 14 out there? I have not seen any lol.
@@hughhou there are many. I'm at 30 now
the heat dissipation design looks legit, like how they improve small invitations in details as well
Yes. Pretty good gripe as well.
Maybe if they'd catch up to 2014 and include a heatsink. PanoX did.
Hey! Thanks for this great review! What's the name of the thing you attached the X4 to the drone?
I followed your link and bought one. Could you recommend a type or model of microSD card for best performance? I see v60 vs v30. Is more better?
I believe v60 or the most expensive one. I got the most expensive one in 512G. You need that to avoid overheating problem and do not drop frame in 8K. It is huge file size and data rate
Wait hold on - there is no such a thing is v60 - I have V30 A2 in 512G. I will get it from Insta360 as this camera is picky. 8K is demanding.
Does this support 1tb microsd card ? If yes which brand and model ?
Amazing review, very detailed. Thank you! I am your 1k like :)
Thank you very much!
@@hughhou thanks buddy!
No one does it like you do. Thank you for an excellent review. Very informative. It might be time for me to purchase my first 360 cam
Thank you thank you!!
Thanks Hugh for the well done Review 👍👍👍
Glad you like it!
So what's the better workflow for 360 videos? Record in 8k and use topaz to interpolate to 60fps. Or record 5.7k/60fps and upscale with topaz.
Can you just do 8K in 30fps with no Topaz?
You are very welcome. Glad it help!
The footage looks spectacular! Nice video. Hope you shared your x4 settings you used. Can't wait to watch this entirely later on, saved!
Thank you so much! My settings in this tutorial btw: ua-cam.com/video/V_Q2qfQnf-M/v-deo.htmlsi=msq7-Ye-E0BSj77h
Awesome action camera indeed. Just unboxed mine & immediately made a tutorial. Nothing on the market can touch it.
Nice 👍
flawless review
Thank you! Glad you think so!
I don’t know what you said, but great video, very informative.
Thank you for your review.👍
The X4 is definitely a step up in quality.
Haha Thanks for watching! Apperciated that!
Wow great review!!!
Please confirm, 72 megapixels on HDR mode? And AEB? Important your Virtual tour review
That is coming tomorrow about HDR but yes 72MP HDR. But with a catch! Detail review tomorrow!
This is by far the best review of the new X4. Btw, is it still relevant to buy the Insta360 One RS 1 Inch 360 in 2024?
I think so. Low light is still better out of the box and Virtual Tour... well, save it for the next review in 360!
Thank you very much for this amazing work, Sir!
Excellent video. Please add more low light videos on the X4 vs X3 vs Ace Pro pure video mode
Will do in the next one :)
Great review as always Hugh, I have a question if you don't mind. When reviewing the photos on the camera can we review 72mp and export the 72mp photos as this was not possible on the X3?
Yes you can review the 72MP photo without export it. Both the HDR and the Pure Shot! Also the 11K timelapse
That is great thanks for feeding back
How does the footage look in the AVP? I found that spatial video shot on AVP and iPhone didn't look that great because they aren't even shot in 4K. Does the footage of the X4 look better in the AVP?
It is coming tomorrow. Waiting for UA-cam to process in 8K and encoding for AVP.
Cheers!
Great review. Did you say Canon had a name for the 360/vr180 camera??
Yup. Also coming with 1" sensor. Here: ua-cam.com/video/KVKSwdIDnZ0/v-deo.htmlsi=g7umirsRb08QQ_4w
I really enjoy all the camera comparisons.
One thing I hoped to see was if the Thermo Grip cover let it run longer in the heat.
I don't get the Thermo Grip cover lol. I never use it.
I didnt watch this all becuase aim at work but can it pause a recording and then resume plus can it add on to a recording that has already been taken like the 360 Ace pro? I did order this X4 and am very excited for it.
Watch it when you get home and get you cited for your coming up X4 :) I also share tips and tricks in this video.
Wow this was great. Thanks!
Glad you like it
You're a funny guy! Really good review! VERY Comprehensive! Impressive.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Keeping my 1" RS, can't wait for the update to that.
I hope they update 1" as well!
Outstanding video sir; with great quality and information. I wish I had seen your video sooner, as i just purchased the Insta360 X3 camera.
Awww. X3 still a great camera.
Awesome review 👍
thank you!
Outstanding and thorough review. Which drone did you lift the X4 with? Thank you.
I wondered that, too. So I went back and he did say it, and you can read it off the drone arms: DJI Mavic 3. I have a Mavic Air 2, so I'm a little worried but we'll see.
It is M3. Mavic Air 2 can't lift it as this is heavier than X3.
Thanks for the detailed review! Trying to decide if i should upgrade from the now ancient original Qoocam. X4 looks way beyond what I'm using now.
Yes it is better than old Qoocam - but again Qoocam 3 Ultra is coming. So it is hard to say
@@hughhou Have they let you play with the Ultra? Haven't seen anything mentioned. Also quite surprised that the Qoocam 3 was better in still photos even with the lower megapixel count.
Thanks Hugh!
