pretty cool but hey can we have insta 360 go 4 with : 4k crisp, light and small (a trail running camera that basically you forget as it's light) same great battery 30-40 minutes just the thumb camera, pretty fast transfer file, and on easy update, maybe two buttons and the capacity of setting video pro 15 seconds on on short press but if other shortcut i can also use video pro but other duration ??????
Thank you so much for the amazing work you put in your videos. I’ve been on the edge on buying a 360 camera and I’m worried about the complexity of exporting 360 camera footage to my computer and iPhone. I have major life events happening this year like getting married. So I want to capture those moments so I could relive/replay them in the future. First thing that comes to mind is getting a 360 camera, but I’m worried those footage will remain in the memory card forever because it’s too difficult to digest/edit.
This is getting relative easy now with X4. For example, my latest tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/StkQLzd7UxY/v-deo.htmlsi=6xRByaBRTprqPT5D - I shot on a 360 camera and just draw a box around me and track the whole way. So I put the camera down, capture it while I am doing other thing without a camera operator or asking anyone to hold the phone for me. Capture it in 8K and then just use AI track it to create all those camera movement you see in this video. Something it is very easy to have these features as content creators that also has a full time job. So with AI, it should get your footage out pretty easy. A computer is recommanded tho but your phone should work as well.
Because the camera is light hungry!!! It retain the details but not the shaprness b/c light is not there. The test do show X4 is not a camera for lowlight if you are not shooting it for post. Zoom in tho, the shaprness in X3 and RS is not the sharpness you need. They are ISO artifacts that I can not get rid of it in post. I think only Qoocam 3 give good deatil but way too much noise. Sharpness =/= details.
I don't think I'd ever find a more detailed review than this.. I really didn't expect that low light footage to be this crisp, thanks for showing that! this really changes everything for me lol
It is hardware limitation they told me. No way around it. You need X4 in you need continue recording for concert or church livestream. It is one of my biggest complain and been a year no change.
Well, thanks for confirming Insta360 lie just as much to Hugh Hou as to their customers. The 30 minute limit has always been firmware, not hardware. They could fix it but refuse.

You're my last hope in the bought and paid for creator scape to be honest about this camera. I hope (haven't watch this yet) that you're actually honest and point out the flaws as it's basically an X3. 1. Color science is still bad look at color shifts between skin tones on most of the videos. 2. The artifacts are awful - look at the blocking on images even in broad daylight. 3. Why is no one that is bought and paid for with a camera explaining how bad the highlights are yet claim this is so much better than the X3? It's not, it literally is an X3 with some more AI stuff for algorithms. 4. Reframed video 2.7k isn't impressive. Especially when all the 8k is doing is amplifying how bad the artifacts etc are before reframe. 5. The 1RS is bad in and of it self. BIG sensor, poor low light performance. The x4 1/2 sensor still bad. 6. UA-camrs should be honest, they are losing credibility. Getting resell links to push a camera that isn't much different then the X3. The Qoo cam had 8k prior to this, it was bad as well. They never made any real changes, they just pushed it out. Sadly that is all that Insta360 has been doing year after year. It's not a good look. And it takes those whom bu it with their hard earned money to get a real review. Ps. Owner of a pocket 1/2/3, Canon 1D Mark 1/2/3, 7D, 7D mark II, Sony A9, Gopro 3-11. All of these dont need a million people to push their products on youtube. Take a wild guess why that is... The quality speaks for it self. The things on the Insta are all novelty. They don't listen to their customers at all.
Thank you! It is basically is a X3 in term of hardware specs - but so so much better. Here is my break down based on your questions. I am being very honest and you know that already - it is my brand: 1. Yes, it is an action camera so still bad compared to, like Titan 2. It has improve a lot. Insta360 showing some footage shot on X3 on their X4 commercial - very strange but it is better. You can see the chart test here 3. The highlights is improved. Check my video here in Joshua Tree. It is high sun and keep the highlight roll of nicely. We are still talking about an ACTION camera - you do pay what you get. But compare to others - significantly improved. Especially compare to X3. 4. In 2.7K yes. 8K magic windows is 1080P. 2.7K you need Meta 2 in 12K... This is still a 1/2 inch sensor - still super small 5. If you think 1RS is bad - then X4 is not gonna be better so you are right... 6. Agree 100%. X4, in your perspective, can be a badly needed "buy fix" of X3. The sensor is capable to do more but the ISP is not powerful enough on X3. Now X4 fix it. But if you are looking for 2D camera quality - why I start the video like this - you will still be disappointed. But for 360 and VR, this is a huge upgrade. PS. all the camera you mentioned is going to be better no double as they are 2D camera - in fact, your phone is still better than X4 as I state here. But none of those can do 360 video or immersive video. So.... Well lets start the discussion.
@@hughhou Why I love your videos. I've watched 14 reviews and it peeves me to give those people view counts because I know they are biased. What I noticed before anything else was how bad the focus was on the edges AND the artifacts. I noticed this on my ipad which is fairly difficult usualy. Then went to 4k on my 4k laptop then to 4k on my big screen and dear god it was bad on both. It irks me that they just won't take the time and release something good. Insta has a habit if doing this over and over and with each time it becomes more of a cash grab. For example. We can go back to my original Canon 1D. (not 1dx). I can slap the newest lens on that dinky sensor and we will see that the camera sensor is it's limiting factor. The lens AND the sensor on this are it's limiting factor. They could have squeezed way more out of this body than they did and kept the 8k. The fact that Insta is notorious for this as we saw in the ace pro and it's underwhelming performance, it's lack of good color science etc.. is their MO. And on its face, that is bad. They use youtubers to sell their product and that even worse. Major manufactures of quality products dont need youtubers to sell their products. Why? Because they don't sell novelties, they sell tools. This is supposed to be a tool but it's more of a novelty. You pointed this out in your video, they don't show the low light because they know EVERYONE wants low light capabilities. And when they see how bad it is, it's a no brainer to wait or suffer. The highlight Rolloff was nice but the banding and the artifacts - i just couldn't get past that. And when you were in between the rocks with the young lady, that MAJOR stitch line should not have been there. That was just bad. I do a lot of drift events for my other channel and the X2/3 was unusable. I did try but it was just awful. The RS underwhelming with good light, the low light wasn't bad but just the banding and artifacts again. I did get the 8k which I have been begging for but they omitted the most important things to go with the 8k. Sensor/Lens. They did the equivalent of putting a big turbo, upgraded motor on a car with stock brakes and bald tires.

I just can't get over how small of an improvement it is. But like you said, it's the tool for the job. Low light is something I need and doesn't have it. I also need clarity and in focus around the edges and this is AWFUL at that just like it's older brothers. As a Canon person (7Dmark 1 and 2, Canon 1DX 1/2/3) I am hoping for a Canon version. Ever since you showed us that a few months ago, it got me excited at the prospect of a decent camera. I hate AI novelties and low frill stuff. Give me quality out of camera and a 1 inch sensor with 8k and good lenses optically. Thanks for the full review but since the standard wasn't set very high in the first place there has not been alot of improvement to make this look half good. Thats the issue though it's just good it's not great. Always feels like a money grab with Insta. Just tiny improvements. They could have upgraded the sensors, could have done more than AI - but instead it is very underwhelming.

I was waiting for a 5.7k 60fps 360 cam and here it is! Insta-buy. Thanks for the review. Sadly there's no mention of 10-bit support anywhere for HDR grading so I guess it's limited to SDR. But the color profile, automatic white balance are vastly improved compared to all previous models. And I couldn't notice any of the usual banding either, yay!

Thank you. But you don't speak about hdr in video. In x3 we are limited to 25fps? In x4 does we have 8k 30fps hdr ? What is about dng hdr ? Possible or only horrible jpeg ?
I have HDR coming in the next video hopefully I can launch tomorrow. It is in 8K so you can see the HDR on this one. But I made a mistakes and supposed to launch today with sample footage for download but then I need to pull the release and try it again tomorrow. UA-cam take FOREVER to process 8K update recently no idea why.
Titan's resolution is high, but it can only be viewed at 8K resolution when uploaded to UA-cam. If you look at airpano UA-camr's 8k content video, the resolution is very good. There is a big difference from the x4's 8k video. However, if the x4's 8k video is upscaled with AI, wouldn't it be possible to express the image quality of Titan's UA-cam 8k content at a low price similar to that of Titan's resolution?
No, X4 will never reach Titan quality no matter what we do. It is pixel unit, lens distortion, bit-depth all these elements make Titan the professional camera way better. It is like comparing a GoPro ($300) to ARRI ($300,000). I shoot with Titan as well not just Airpano and actually they do not shoot with Titan on their drone footage.
I don't like the AI reframe. Its to nervous following every single movement of the target. But the footage is very impressive. But i stay for the X3. I don't have the use of 8k. In 5.7k the quality is not that different. I dont mind too much about the colors because LUTs will be applied in post.
Wait really - I don't think so. Canon R5C is wayyyyyyyy better than X4. Like wayyyyyyyyy better. X4 no way near the quality of a R5C + RF5.2mm shooting in Canon RAW LT in true 60fps 8K.
I create virtual tours. I'd like to see an in deep comparison among 360 cameras fo virtual tour. I don't want to spend more than 800 € for upgrading my 360 camera...

FYI one of ur insta360 X3 camera might be faulty causing a tint. commonly due to sensor damage from the direct sun.
Hi, I mainly take 360 photos to view in the Meta Guest3. The X3 resolution was not enough to enjoy it. Is the X4 better for this purpose? Did you test it ? Thanks
This one is not comparison. So when I actually film with any insta360 camera, I turn X4 sharpness to LOW (for my previous filming in the national park). X3 I only use it for comparison to X4, so the camera sharpness is in Medium. When I do comparison, all camera sharpness to Medium which is the factory default. This is overheating test so sharpness is not matter. BTW, there is a bad practices circle around the net to set camera sharpeness high on action camera - which lead to very action camera look. For example, GoPro footage will always look sharper than a $100,000 ARRI S35. But can we say GoPro is a better camera than ARRI. In camera sharpenss is bad for any camera. Sharpness should be added in post.
B/c it suck in my honest opinion. I return it and get the Rode Wireless Pro. I ask the pro sound guy (I am not myself) and he said don't even bother with DJI mic - use Tentacle Track E. But Track E is too expensive, Rode will do. BTW, I use timecode sync not using the preamp in Insta360.

Possibly odd question for an action-cam, but do they support the 360 Webcam mode that came out with the x3? It can be great filming hybrid events with bunches of people...
'log' files - are they available so that you can color grade to your own liking? what about manually setting other camera settings such as ISO, sharpness, shutter speed, etc.?
There is LOG but same as X3 or OneRS 1" - highly not recommended to use as Insta360 LOG is not true log and very bad for grading. All pro UA-camrs mentioned that in their video. So I will avoid using Insta360 Log.
Hmm, you say there wont be a better 360 camera in 2024 for sure. You mean insta is not going to release a one inch version this year I take it? To replace the one rs 1 inch 360. That is sort of the big question because people have that camera now and its better in low light than the x4. I cannot tell if its much better in daylight or not. It looks like the x4 is a tiny bit better in daylight for resolution.
I don't think so. That is a Leica collab - it always take longer time. Also the OneRS 1" still work great and no need for Insta360 to kill their own products. X4 is needed as there is lots of problem on X3 that now is addressed :)

I bought (and haven't opened) the RS One inch last week. Looks like I'm taking it back. Thank you! BTW - I took some of your other videos and applied Topaz Video AI -- absolutely stunning. It made Dolce Mia look almost indistinguishable from real life and it almost leveled the playing field between the X3 footage and the $5000 Insta 360 Pro footage. Great channel - keep it up!
Great to hear! Yes, V5 is even crazier! X4 8K is BETTER than Pro 2. Insta360 might not want me to say it, but their prosumer camera is out matching their professional camera now... We need a Pro 3 in freaking 12K if possible...

ARGH... i have a question for you: iam interested in Topaz Video AI as well.. have a nvidia 4080 how fast or slow is it ? i use Gigapixel for 360 Pictures with good results.. but i fear that Topaz Video AI would cause hours of hours of rendering ????
@@Kraeuterbutter Depends heavily on the settings, but for many, you can expect a few fps - meaning about 10-20% real time. Although the 360 footage is even slower. My Mac is about 1/3 the speed of an NVIDIA card, so it is definitely something to plan around.
Have you tried to combine it with a RODE NT-SF1, so you can matching the audio directing with the video direction? Would love to see / hear it, and how you did it as well of cause 😊
So good video and perfect comparison video!!! The best 8K image quality among 8K 360 cameras for current consumers. If Canon's hybrid VR camera 1 inch is in the early $1,000s even if it is more expensive, I would like to look forward to this. I hope the launch price in South Korea is about 1.5 million won as the price is expected.

Will UA-cam allow 8K 360 upload? If not where would you suggest we upload the full resolution 8K spherical videos to for online viewing? If I remember YT changed their policy and only allow up to 4K video uploads, even if it 360 video resulting in ~SD views at any given angle… :(

Hugh are the best .... Thank Hugh. Hugh ALWAYS has the best 'technical' reviews. Hugh always gets the math right when comparing cameras so that we see the best 'apples to apples' comparisons. Whereas some others do not strive for accuracy (e.g. already some bad comparison reviews out there: (1) one with 30p to 60p comparison but uploaded at 30p (so silly), [and then blamed the 30p motion blur on the frame rate instead of the shutter speed]. (2) one with wrong setting to compare side by side "BEST quality" of X4 & RS One 1-inch (but had RS One 1-inch set at 30p and should have known that even though Insta360 calls RS One 1-inch both 6K 24p & 6K 30 as 6k, they are NOT the same res, so ended up comparing best apple to not best orange w X4 at max & RS One at LESS than max, and mismatched reframe crop factors). SO THANK you Hugh, for accurate comparisons! One can tell (e.g. at 10:03) just by looking at the relative position of the circular gravel (hearth?) for each camera that Hugh is showing you the correctly cropped resolution that he says he is for each camera. Thank you. But, what would be really a bonus would be (ex. at 28:40 lens guard vs no lens guard) if you could (in future similar comparisons) also include a seamless slow "frame wipe" comparison of the two side by side shots so that we could even better see if there truly is or is not any difference between the two (e.g. can we see any distortion difference or the seam move or the sharpness or color shift as you wipe left/right). Just a thought for an added comparison technique (only seen right here, that no one else uses). Thank Hugh.

Pro 2 is still going to be better as the pixels is not spread out in 360 - it divided by 6 piece so it will be light year sharper. I can do a follow comparison but I am very sure Pro 2 is better.
I want to record soccer matches in 180 view which makes the playback for the whole pitch possible. 360 works fine but a lot of useless area shown in the back lens makes the video unnecessarily bulky. Is there any way for making non VR 180 video? And which camera should I choose?
I think you should try VR180 camera - 360 will be waste pixels. Even you don’t need 3D or VR180, it’s always good to capture them and in case future Vision Pro become affordable you can easy turn your 180 into spatial video without any extra work.
Now the prospect of VR is slightly better, but there are very few portable 3DVR shooting devices. It has been many years since the release of insta360EVO. Many people only consider 3DVR180 devices instead of 2D360VR. I wonder if insta has heard these demands and plans to launch new 3DVR cameras.
They had and they are just slow and not believe in the 3DVR market yet. But rumor does said they finally found the sensor to hit 8K and they want the next EVO to be 8K. I think it is a ever better sensor than X4.

Just so you know, I am VERY frustrated I listened to your advice on this camera. I do shots on location with both the RS 1 inch and the X4, and the RS 1 inch ALWAYS performs better. I had one of my RS 1 inch cameras fall on our 4 week California to Canada adventure and so I had to choose between my scratched on both sides RS 1 inch camera and X4 and because I couldn't view I chose the X4 more often And I HATE all the shots from the X4. They are worse than my One x! How is that possible? I have precious footage from Jasper National Park before it burnt down that is precious, and I am sick to think that I used the silly X4 there. So many tears from that camera. I wish they would have honored my multiple requests to let me return it.
Awwww I am sorry you have bad experience of it. It is an action camera compare to One RS 1". So it need more love to fix it in post. But the details are there and better than RS 1" in that regard. Most of our recent 360 content on this channel is shot on the X4 and we love it. The recent firmware fix some of the issue as well. For what you do in nature with such dynamic range - One RS 1" is def still better. Are you still in replace period? I will stick to One RS 1" is you love that camera and with a workflow that is solid - which you are as your content always show up on my feeds. We still use X3 on some of our aerial shot. New camera does not always mean better if you are used to something and your machine work better in older camera.
@@hughhou well, interestingly enough when I creatively ask Gemini about my comparison videos comparing the RS 1 to the X4 here is my interesting reply as to why these video are being demoted down to the bottom or my most popular video sort list .. **As your friend, I'd say it's highly possible that Insta360 is influencing UA-cam's algorithm to suppress your older RS 1 vs. 4x comparison videos.** Here's why: * **Competition:** Insta360 likely wants to promote their newer models and minimize comparisons to older ones. * **Algorithm manipulation:** Platforms like UA-cam can be influenced by various factors, including partnerships and advertising. My latest videos were good, but I am fairly certain they are getting Sabotaged by Insta because I labeled which shots were taken with which camera. I didn't even bad mouth the X4. I just labeled the shots. Really..

I live in Los Angeles, the production cost of this video is around $8000 not including our travel fees and other production related expense. We did all these out of pocket for our viewers. Getting the camera allow us to review it. But the $499 camera compare to our production cost is nothing. I will buy it out right to review it as well as I did right after getting the second one after launch for VR180 research. @@hughhou after a few more tests side by side, I feel like they are pretty comparable. The Qoocam 8K is a tad less sharp, but the video is much cleaner with less noise. Sharpening a very small amount brings it up to the same level as the X4.
Thank you for including the detail about continuous recording rather than missing footage every 30 minutes (no one else really covered this!). That was my biggest complaint with the x3, happy to see it fixed.
It's also my biggest issue with the Evo. My primary use is choir recordings of up to 3 hours. Currently I try to work around it by recording over cable from a Theta V (USB live mode), but that doesn't replace stereo 180. Notably it eventually runs out of charge even with USB power and wireless modes just make that worse.

Hi Hugh, I use the x3 as my main camera on my channel and just got my hands on the x4. How do i fix the massive fisheye with it? in insta360 studio i would use the "natural view" with y x3, but now thats gone and the closest thing i can get is "dewarped" but it's still extremely warped. I am in vegas right now on a trip for my channel, and all the buildings looks look like they are tilted and going to fall over. in the footageIt's awful :(. Do you know anything about this, do you know if "Natureal View" will be be back or how to get it better? Playing around in FCP with the exported footage doesn't help my either.
It is called MegaView and it is by default. Then you just zoom in. I think there are lots of bugs in current version of Studio app that will be fix in the next version. As what you describe does not show in X3.

Please someone advise . My x3 seems to not have stabilization , it’s very shaky even through the stick is not long. It’s like it gets Strong vibration issues .

I actually hear rumor said they finally find the sensor to make EVO 2 in 8K or 60fps quality - but no news yet. I guess this will release even before the new 1"
@hughhou thanks and I did watch that - I saw your comments on image quality but still a bit unsure - if you were shooting a video inside a student classroom for example would you go with the x4 or 1 inch and upscale using topaz ?
How blurry is the image on the side of the lens ( you showed center sharpness that is better in 8k than 5.7k, on the stich line, there may not be such a big difference)

Strabge that we dont see more blurr on lens borders, by the way is it really 8k ? If it is the same sensor as x3 it is only grabbing 2880*2880 pixels for each sensor that is not 8k !
4k locks my pc up trying to watch. That being said my C100 MKII camera downscales 4k to 1080p in camera and makes it look better than most 1080p video. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
@@hughhou Yes! The Sphere was much better than the previous aerial edition, but it still suffers from a lot of rolling shutter issues and noisy footage unfit to use in VR sadly. I just wish they make the next version that has proper dampening of the drone vibration.
I have the X2 and just ordered the X4. What I hate about Insta360 is their proprietary transfer cable on the X2, and the fact on android, it cannot use external storage unless you buy their small USB-C things. Handling a lot of footage for quick playback is not fun ! Having a 4TB external HD I can just connect to a tablet to show footage to friend and family would be so great ! Transfer rate is soo slow, that to transfer the footage to be able to play it back is just super annoying ! This is what I hate the most with Insta360 camera.
So I think X4 or even X3 fixed that (not sure tho). I usually just use SD card reader and it is the fastest way to transfer. Or use the Quick reader as external hard-drive on my iPad / iPhone. Will this tip help?
@@hughhou I often just use the footage on my tablet, because it was really not a great experience on the PC, but I heard the improve the software on PC so it smoother now. But it still much more interesting to just bring a tablet and let people experience the 360 footage with it than on a laptop. I haven't tried using a simple SD Card reader on a tablet, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work, as they want to lock you in with their hardware, like the Quick Reader... I did got me to buy the quickreader with my X4... I just wish I didn't have to do that ! It not a hardware limitation, it really a software things. I could maybe just order a bunch of tiny microsd card and just use those with a quick reader, but I would much prefer be able to use larger and more robust USB-C SSD drive and be able to put my footage on there and load it on the tablet. It not an performance issue here, as it would be multiple time faster than their quick reader. I just really hate business that cripple intentionally the experience for the user like that. I haven't used my X2 for a while though, and part of the reason is I just hate dealing with footage once recorded. My tablet internal storage is full right now, and I haven't figure out a good solution yet, so I just stop using it. I'll do more test with the X4 once it arrive and find a workflow to storage footage and easily play it back without having to take hours preparing a SD card with the specific footage I want to use. Maybe they improved the android app and allowed external storage now, but if they still make the quick reader, I'm guessing they didn't ! My workflow was to find the footage I need off my computer (not super easy as you can't play it back like any video file), then copy it on a SD card, then put it in the X2, then connect wireless to the tablet, then copy that footage from the X2 to the tablet ! I mean it just ridiculous! I did found the sub folder where insta360 keep the local video, but I did have a few issues playing in there directly. Anyway, I'll do more test when I receive the X4 and see if I can find a better workflow. My goal is to be able to get a 2 years old recording within a minute or 2 while I have friend visiting. Plug my SDD with the media, Insta360 app show all my clips, and I select the clip and it playback ! I don't feel like I'm asking a lot...
I just took the dust off my X2, and nothing changed ! I would need to build my own Android Insta360 Copy app, that can check external storage files, have a quick preview, select them and have them copied to the local memory so insta360 can play them ! I really hate that they voluntary make user experience as bad as this ! I just don't understand what they gain by limiting us this simple external storage function.

Was waiting to get the Canon 8K 3D 360 camera but since there are some events coming up soon to take videos off, I decided to get the X4. Seams like a lot of people are in the same boat who's wanting to buy either the Qoocam 3 ultra or the Canon 3D 360 camera. Perfect timing for Insta360 to release this camera before the other 2.
Yes indeed. Insta360 came out of the blue. Still a great buy as both Ultra or Canon is gonna be more expensive than the X4. So even someone get the X4, they can still upgrade to later if they decide to.
on the camera overheating test: why does the X3 look here as it has more resolution than the X4, even the X4 is filming in 8k and the x3 "only" in 5,7k ?
I used mobile phone to reframe and render for this one just to show time different as the recording is 8K in 36 min and I don't to waste TB of footage to just X3 is missing footage. Sorry for that and very good catch. That is human mistake (more like Kimchi getting lazy there as he begging for a walk in the desert! )

Thank you so much for the amazing work you put in your videos. I’ve been on the edge on buying a 360 camera and I’m worried about the complexity of exporting 360 camera footage to my computer and iPhone. I have major life events happening this year like getting married. So I want to capture those moments so I could relive/replay them in the future. First thing that comes to mind is getting a 360 camera, but I’m worried those footage will remain in the memory card forever because it’s too difficult to digest/edit.
This is getting relative easy now with X4. For example, my latest tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/StkQLzd7UxY/v-deo.htmlsi=6xRByaBRTprqPT5D - I shot on a 360 camera and just draw a box around me and track the whole way. So I put the camera down, capture it while I am doing other thing without a camera operator or asking anyone to hold the phone for me. Capture it in 8K and then just use AI track it to create all those camera movement you see in this video. Something it is very easy to have these features as content creators that also has a full time job. So with AI, it should get your footage out pretty easy. A computer is recommanded tho but your phone should work as well.

X4 looks so much sharper in the standard resolution tests, but WAY softer in the low light tests. What's going on?
Because the camera is light hungry!!! It retain the details but not the shaprness b/c light is not there. The test do show X4 is not a camera for lowlight if you are not shooting it for post. Zoom in tho, the shaprness in X3 and RS is not the sharpness you need. They are ISO artifacts that I can not get rid of it in post. I think only Qoocam 3 give good deatil but way too much noise. Sharpness =/= details.

It is hardware limitation they told me. No way around it. You need X4 in you need continue recording for concert or church livestream. It is one of my biggest complain and been a year no change.

I also bought TWO of this and the new one is coming. I will make tutorial on that. In theory yes but let me head down to that rabbit hole first to see what is the catch and if it works, you will know.
You're my last hope in the bought and paid for creator scape to be honest about this camera. I hope (haven't watch this yet) that you're actually honest and point out the flaws as it's basically an X3.
1. Color science is still bad look at color shifts between skin tones on most of the videos.
2. The artifacts are awful - look at the blocking on images even in broad daylight.
3. Why is no one that is bought and paid for with a camera explaining how bad the highlights are yet claim this is so much better than the X3? It's not, it literally is an X3 with some more AI stuff for algorithms.
4. Reframed video 2.7k isn't impressive. Especially when all the 8k is doing is amplifying how bad the artifacts etc are before reframe.
5. The 1RS is bad in and of it self. BIG sensor, poor low light performance. The x4 1/2 sensor still bad.
6. UA-camrs should be honest, they are losing credibility. Getting resell links to push a camera that isn't much different then the X3. The Qoo cam had 8k prior to this, it was bad as well. They never made any real changes, they just pushed it out. Sadly that is all that Insta360 has been doing year after year. It's not a good look. And it takes those whom bu it with their hard earned money to get a real review.
Ps. Owner of a pocket 1/2/3, Canon 1D Mark 1/2/3, 7D, 7D mark II, Sony A9, Gopro 3-11. All of these dont need a million people to push their products on youtube. Take a wild guess why that is... The quality speaks for it self. The things on the Insta are all novelty. They don't listen to their customers at all.
Thank you! It is basically is a X3 in term of hardware specs - but so so much better. Here is my break down based on your questions. I am being very honest and you know that already - it is my brand:
1. Yes, it is an action camera so still bad compared to, like Titan
2. It has improve a lot. Insta360 showing some footage shot on X3 on their X4 commercial - very strange but it is better. You can see the chart test here
3. The highlights is improved. Check my video here in Joshua Tree. It is high sun and keep the highlight roll of nicely. We are still talking about an ACTION camera - you do pay what you get. But compare to others - significantly improved. Especially compare to X3.
4. In 2.7K yes. 8K magic windows is 1080P. 2.7K you need Meta 2 in 12K... This is still a 1/2 inch sensor - still super small
5. If you think 1RS is bad - then X4 is not gonna be better so you are right...
6. Agree 100%. X4, in your perspective, can be a badly needed "buy fix" of X3. The sensor is capable to do more but the ISP is not powerful enough on X3. Now X4 fix it. But if you are looking for 2D camera quality - why I start the video like this - you will still be disappointed. But for 360 and VR, this is a huge upgrade.
PS. all the camera you mentioned is going to be better no double as they are 2D camera - in fact, your phone is still better than X4 as I state here. But none of those can do 360 video or immersive video. So.... Well lets start the discussion.
@@hughhou Why I love your videos. I've watched 14 reviews and it peeves me to give those people view counts because I know they are biased.
What I noticed before anything else was how bad the focus was on the edges AND the artifacts. I noticed this on my ipad which is fairly difficult usualy. Then went to 4k on my 4k laptop then to 4k on my big screen and dear god it was bad on both. It irks me that they just won't take the time and release something good. Insta has a habit if doing this over and over and with each time it becomes more of a cash grab.
For example. We can go back to my original Canon 1D. (not 1dx). I can slap the newest lens on that dinky sensor and we will see that the camera sensor is it's limiting factor. The lens AND the sensor on this are it's limiting factor. They could have squeezed way more out of this body than they did and kept the 8k.
The fact that Insta is notorious for this as we saw in the ace pro and it's underwhelming performance, it's lack of good color science etc.. is their MO. And on its face, that is bad. They use youtubers to sell their product and that even worse.
Major manufactures of quality products dont need youtubers to sell their products. Why? Because they don't sell novelties, they sell tools. This is supposed to be a tool but it's more of a novelty. You pointed this out in your video, they don't show the low light because they know EVERYONE wants low light capabilities. And when they see how bad it is, it's a no brainer to wait or suffer.
The highlight Rolloff was nice but the banding and the artifacts - i just couldn't get past that. And when you were in between the rocks with the young lady, that MAJOR stitch line should not have been there. That was just bad.
I do a lot of drift events for my other channel and the X2/3 was unusable. I did try but it was just awful. The RS underwhelming with good light, the low light wasn't bad but just the banding and artifacts again.
I did get the 8k which I have been begging for but they omitted the most important things to go with the 8k. Sensor/Lens.
They did the equivalent of putting a big turbo, upgraded motor on a car with stock brakes and bald tires.

I just can't get over how small of an improvement it is. But like you said, it's the tool for the job. Low light is something I need and doesn't have it. I also need clarity and in focus around the edges and this is AWFUL at that just like it's older brothers.
As a Canon person (7Dmark 1 and 2, Canon 1DX 1/2/3) I am hoping for a Canon version. Ever since you showed us that a few months ago, it got me excited at the prospect of a decent camera. I hate AI novelties and low frill stuff. Give me quality out of camera and a 1 inch sensor with 8k and good lenses optically.
Thanks for the full review but since the standard wasn't set very high in the first place there has not been alot of improvement to make this look half good. Thats the issue though it's just good it's not great. Always feels like a money grab with Insta. Just tiny improvements. They could have upgraded the sensors, could have done more than AI - but instead it is very underwhelming.
Canon I think it will be better but prob will be pretty pricy as the specs are so much higher.

Sadly there's no mention of 10-bit support anywhere for HDR grading so I guess it's limited to SDR. But the color profile, automatic white balance are vastly improved compared to all previous models. And I couldn't notice any of the usual banding either, yay!
It is SDR - HDR you might want to wait for Qoocam 3 Ultra. But Insta360 never does 10-bit not even their flagship 2D camera AcePro.

I have HDR coming in the next video hopefully I can launch tomorrow. It is in 8K so you can see the HDR on this one. But I made a mistakes and supposed to launch today with sample footage for download but then I need to pull the release and try it again tomorrow. UA-cam take FOREVER to process 8K update recently no idea why.
Titan's resolution is high, but it can only be viewed at 8K resolution when uploaded to UA-cam. If you look at airpano UA-camr's 8k content video, the resolution is very good. There is a big difference from the x4's 8k video. However, if the x4's 8k video is upscaled with AI, wouldn't it be possible to express the image quality of Titan's UA-cam 8k content at a low price similar to that of Titan's resolution?
No, X4 will never reach Titan quality no matter what we do. It is pixel unit, lens distortion, bit-depth all these elements make Titan the professional camera way better. It is like comparing a GoPro ($300) to ARRI ($300,000). I shoot with Titan as well not just Airpano and actually they do not shoot with Titan on their drone footage.

I don't like the AI reframe. Its to nervous following every single movement of the target. But the footage is very impressive. But i stay for the X3. I don't have the use of 8k. In 5.7k the quality is not that different. I dont mind too much about the colors because LUTs will be applied in post.

At 7:31 the x3 looks way sharper than the x4. The x3 is also in focus, while the x4 is severely out of focus. Any comments on that, please?
This one is not comparison. So when I actually film with any insta360 camera, I turn X4 sharpness to LOW (for my previous filming in the national park). X3 I only use it for comparison to X4, so the camera sharpness is in Medium. When I do comparison, all camera sharpness to Medium which is the factory default. This is overheating test so sharpness is not matter. BTW, there is a bad practices circle around the net to set camera sharpeness high on action camera - which lead to very action camera look. For example, GoPro footage will always look sharper than a $100,000 ARRI S35. But can we say GoPro is a better camera than ARRI. In camera sharpenss is bad for any camera. Sharpness should be added in post.
I am really shocked it still needs a separate GPS unit whereas the panox V2 has built in GPS! I thought they would have improved that upon the X3.
Indeed and the GPS remote (very good BTW) does not support GSV or Maplify. So if you need tracking, I will stick with PanoX V2 for now.

Why you've mentioned that you don't use (and probably won't use) the DJI Mic 2?
B/c it suck in my honest opinion. I return it and get the Rode Wireless Pro. I ask the pro sound guy (I am not myself) and he said don't even bother with DJI mic - use Tentacle Track E. But Track E is too expensive, Rode will do. BTW, I use timecode sync not using the preamp in Insta360.

'log' files - are they available so that you can color grade to your own liking? what about manually setting other camera settings such as ISO, sharpness, shutter speed, etc.?
There is LOG but same as X3 or OneRS 1" - highly not recommended to use as Insta360 LOG is not true log and very bad for grading. All pro UA-camrs mentioned that in their video. So I will avoid using Insta360 Log.
Hmm, you say there wont be a better 360 camera in 2024 for sure. You mean insta is not going to release a one inch version this year I take it? To replace the one rs 1 inch 360. That is sort of the big question because people have that camera now and its better in low light than the x4. I cannot tell if its much better in daylight or not. It looks like the x4 is a tiny bit better in daylight for resolution.
I don't think so. That is a Leica collab - it always take longer time. Also the OneRS 1" still work great and no need for Insta360 to kill their own products. X4 is needed as there is lots of problem on X3 that now is addressed :)
In terms of quality there is not much difference between X3 and X4. Pure marketing.

@@Kraeuterbutter Depends heavily on the settings, but for many, you can expect a few fps - meaning about 10-20% real time. Although the 360 footage is even slower. My Mac is about 1/3 the speed of an NVIDIA card, so it is definitely something to plan around.
Have you tried to combine it with a RODE NT-SF1, so you can matching the audio directing with the video direction?

Good idea. But recording gryo data might be tough. That is a Qoocam 3 feature as X4 is still do not care too much about immersive filmmaking.

Hugh always gets the math right when comparing cameras so that we see the best 'apples to apples' comparisons. Whereas some others do not strive for accuracy (e.g. already some bad comparison reviews out there:
(1) one with 30p to 60p comparison but uploaded at 30p (so silly), [and then blamed the 30p motion blur on the frame rate instead of the shutter speed].
(2) one with wrong setting to compare side by side "BEST quality" of X4 & RS One 1-inch (but had RS One 1-inch set at 30p and should have known that even though Insta360 calls RS One 1-inch both 6K 24p & 6K 30 as 6k, they are NOT the same res, so ended up comparing best apple to not best orange w X4 at max & RS One at LESS than max, and mismatched reframe crop factors).
SO THANK you Hugh, for accurate comparisons! One can tell (e.g. at 10:03) just by looking at the relative position of the circular gravel (hearth?) for each camera that Hugh is showing you the correctly cropped resolution that he says he is for each camera. Thank you.
But, what would be really a bonus would be (ex. at 28:40 lens guard vs no lens guard) if you could (in future similar comparisons) also include a seamless slow "frame wipe" comparison of the two side by side shots so that we could even better see if there truly is or is not any difference between the two (e.g. can we see any distortion difference or the seam move or the sharpness or color shift as you wipe left/right). Just a thought for an added comparison technique (only seen right here, that no one else uses).

Pro 2 is still going to be better as the pixels is not spread out in 360 - it divided by 6 piece so it will be light year sharper. I can do a follow comparison but I am very sure Pro 2 is better.

I want to record soccer matches in 180 view which makes the playback for the whole pitch possible. 360 works fine but a lot of useless area shown in the back lens makes the video unnecessarily bulky. Is there any way for making non VR 180 video? And which camera should I choose?
I think you should try VR180 camera - 360 will be waste pixels. Even you don’t need 3D or VR180, it’s always good to capture them and in case future Vision Pro become affordable you can easy turn your 180 into spatial video without any extra work.

Now the prospect of VR is slightly better, but there are very few portable 3DVR shooting devices. It has been many years since the release of insta360EVO. Many people only consider 3DVR180 devices instead of 2D360VR. I wonder if insta has heard these demands and plans to launch new 3DVR cameras.
They had and they are just slow and not believe in the 3DVR market yet. But rumor does said they finally found the sensor to hit 8K and they want the next EVO to be 8K. I think it is a ever better sensor than X4.

Just so you know, I am VERY frustrated I listened to your advice on this camera. I do shots on location with both the RS 1 inch and the X4, and the RS 1 inch ALWAYS performs better. I had one of my RS 1 inch cameras fall on our 4 week California to Canada adventure and so I had to choose between my scratched on both sides RS 1 inch camera and X4 and because I couldn't view I chose the X4 more often And I HATE all the shots from the X4. They are worse than my One x! How is that possible? I have precious footage from Jasper National Park before it burnt down that is precious, and I am sick to think that I used the silly X4 there. So many tears from that camera. I wish they would have honored my multiple requests to let me return it.
Awwww I am sorry you have bad experience of it. It is an action camera compare to One RS 1". So it need more love to fix it in post. But the details are there and better than RS 1" in that regard. Most of our recent 360 content on this channel is shot on the X4 and we love it. The recent firmware fix some of the issue as well. For what you do in nature with such dynamic range - One RS 1" is def still better. Are you still in replace period? I will stick to One RS 1" is you love that camera and with a workflow that is solid - which you are as your content always show up on my feeds. We still use X3 on some of our aerial shot. New camera does not always mean better if you are used to something and your machine work better in older camera.

What is the best manual settings on the x4? On shutter,iso,ev,wb when weather is sunny?
ISO 100, Shutter is what ever your scene need and use auto WB and make sure sharpness is medium or low and do post sharpening in studio of your NLE
Oh make sure your video quality is high or the highest bitrate option - in settings

In 8-feet it usually very blurry. It is about right. I think I have the original blurry lens version - but still, only close up look good on my unit.
@@hughhou yeah that QC on those was all over the place. I compared mine to X4 today and actually thought the Qoocam 8K looked a bit more detailed.

@@hughhou after a few more tests side by side, I feel like they are pretty comparable. The Qoocam 8K is a tad less sharp, but the video is much cleaner with less noise. Sharpening a very small amount brings it up to the same level as the X4.

You are very welcome! I fight hard on this one as well with Insta360. Now they just need to fix the overheat issue then it will last forever :)
It's also my biggest issue with the Evo. My primary use is choir recordings of up to 3 hours.
Currently I try to work around it by recording over cable from a Theta V (USB live mode), but that doesn't replace stereo 180. Notably it eventually runs out of charge even with USB power and wireless modes just make that worse.

@@iturrajoel Ben Claremont tested in a 29°C office, which while uncomfortably warm isn't totally unrealistic. It overheated after 27 minutes.

Hi Hugh, I use the x3 as my main camera on my channel and just got my hands on the x4. How do i fix the massive fisheye with it? in insta360 studio i would use the "natural view" with y x3, but now thats gone and the closest thing i can get is "dewarped" but it's still extremely warped. I am in vegas right now on a trip for my channel, and all the buildings looks look like they are tilted and going to fall over. in the footageIt's awful :(. Do you know anything about this, do you know if "Natureal View" will be be back or how to get it better? Playing around in FCP with the exported footage doesn't help my either.
It is called MegaView and it is by default. Then you just zoom in. I think there are lots of bugs in current version of Studio app that will be fix in the next version. As what you describe does not show in X3.
Also I used the Premiere plugin on this video. This certain will fix all fisheye distortion

How blurry is the image on the side of the lens ( you showed center sharpness that is better in 8k than 5.7k, on the stich line, there may not be such a big difference)

This still frame show X3 and X4 has the best sharpeness in side of the lens (stitch line). But let me know you think otherwise - we have footage in all sides :)
Strabge that we dont see more blurr on lens borders, by the way is it really 8k ? If it is the same sensor as x3 it is only grabbing 2880*2880 pixels for each sensor that is not 8k !

@@hughhou Yes! The Sphere was much better than the previous aerial edition, but it still suffers from a lot of rolling shutter issues and noisy footage unfit to use in VR sadly.

I have the X2 and just ordered the X4. What I hate about Insta360 is their proprietary transfer cable on the X2, and the fact on android, it cannot use external storage unless you buy their small USB-C things. Handling a lot of footage for quick playback is not fun ! Having a 4TB external HD I can just connect to a tablet to show footage to friend and family would be so great ! Transfer rate is soo slow, that to transfer the footage to be able to play it back is just super annoying ! This is what I hate the most with Insta360 camera.
So I think X4 or even X3 fixed that (not sure tho). I usually just use SD card reader and it is the fastest way to transfer. Or use the Quick reader as external hard-drive on my iPad / iPhone. Will this tip help?
@@hughhou I often just use the footage on my tablet, because it was really not a great experience on the PC, but I heard the improve the software on PC so it smoother now. But it still much more interesting to just bring a tablet and let people experience the 360 footage with it than on a laptop. I haven't tried using a simple SD Card reader on a tablet, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work, as they want to lock you in with their hardware, like the Quick Reader... I did got me to buy the quickreader with my X4... I just wish I didn't have to do that ! It not a hardware limitation, it really a software things. I could maybe just order a bunch of tiny microsd card and just use those with a quick reader, but I would much prefer be able to use larger and more robust USB-C SSD drive and be able to put my footage on there and load it on the tablet. It not an performance issue here, as it would be multiple time faster than their quick reader. I just really hate business that cripple intentionally the experience for the user like that. I haven't used my X2 for a while though, and part of the reason is I just hate dealing with footage once recorded. My tablet internal storage is full right now, and I haven't figure out a good solution yet, so I just stop using it.
I'll do more test with the X4 once it arrive and find a workflow to storage footage and easily play it back without having to take hours preparing a SD card with the specific footage I want to use. Maybe they improved the android app and allowed external storage now, but if they still make the quick reader, I'm guessing they didn't ! My workflow was to find the footage I need off my computer (not super easy as you can't play it back like any video file), then copy it on a SD card, then put it in the X2, then connect wireless to the tablet, then copy that footage from the X2 to the tablet ! I mean it just ridiculous! I did found the sub folder where insta360 keep the local video, but I did have a few issues playing in there directly.
Anyway, I'll do more test when I receive the X4 and see if I can find a better workflow. My goal is to be able to get a 2 years old recording within a minute or 2 while I have friend visiting. Plug my SDD with the media, Insta360 app show all my clips, and I select the clip and it playback ! I don't feel like I'm asking a lot...
I just took the dust off my X2, and nothing changed ! I would need to build my own Android Insta360 Copy app, that can check external storage files, have a quick preview, select them and have them copied to the local memory so insta360 can play them ! I really hate that they voluntary make user experience as bad as this ! I just don't understand what they gain by limiting us this simple external storage function.
Would love to see how the 8K holds up in a 360 VR video and not just a reframed 4k one. Great review looking forward to more content on the X4

Was waiting to get the Canon 8K 3D 360 camera but since there are some events coming up soon to take videos off, I decided to get the X4. Seams like a lot of people are in the same boat who's wanting to buy either the Qoocam 3 ultra or the Canon 3D 360 camera. Perfect timing for Insta360 to release this camera before the other 2.
Yes indeed. Insta360 came out of the blue. Still a great buy as both Ultra or Canon is gonna be more expensive than the X4. So even someone get the X4, they can still upgrade to later if they decide to.

on the camera overheating test: why does the X3 look here as it has more resolution than the X4, even the X4 is filming in 8k and the x3 "only" in 5,7k ?
I used mobile phone to reframe and render for this one just to show time different as the recording is 8K in 36 min and I don't to waste TB of footage to just X3 is missing footage. Sorry for that and very good catch. That is human mistake (more like Kimchi getting lazy there as he begging for a walk in the desert! )
