So what do yall think about this OAK!?! --- (FYI if you're looking for some of the tools I used in this build, I try to put the most popular requests in the video description )
Good stuff. I use rural old growth hardwoods from my property for anything domestic (sawmill 5 miles from my house, run by family friends for generations)... but I can't resist exotic hardwoods when I want to make a flashy handle.
Beautiful! I just made my first knife from leaf spring steel. Since I intend to keep it, the flaws will be mine to learn from. For scales, I figured something from my property would be appropriate, so I made them from my mesquite firewood. Here in Abilene, TX, there are two kinds of trees…cedar and mesquite. 🇨🇱
James, Great knife build. Oak all ways makes good handles. it's hard wood. Only wood i know that's harder than oak is a bodock tree. yeah i know you nit-picked it. lol lol I think your friend will be very happy with his new knife. stay safe.
Beautiful as always mate you are still the cleanest knife maker out there I love all your knifes you make the lines and everything are so clean I really like it. Cheers all the way from Australia 🇦🇺
@@RedBeardOps holy shit you replied ! You’re the only k ice maker that has replied to my comment you guys really do reap comments ! Texas is the only state I would be interested in visiting as an Avid shooter yall are still very much free.
Thanks Richard! I could have taken it to my disc grinder after hand sanding and before stone washing and probably have solved the issue... but just was in a rush I guess. To your point epoxy would have fixed it.
I like everything about it, including the “not best practices” parts. It’s pretty enough to sit on display but I’d also not be afraid to use it and super proud to carry it. Where do you get those push sticks? You’ve really gotten good at using them, I’m sure there’s a learning curve.
They're 1'' dowels of tephlon from McMaster Car. Nothing fancy. Seems to work pretty good. Slight learning curve, but gotta say I love this method. Cheers and thanks!
Great Blade and Vid as always :) I like the colour contrast with the blade and handle material. I was wondering about the gapping you mentioned considering the flatness of the scales, knife surface must be it, this is something I need to work on. The sanding marks kinda work in with the stone wash IMO, I like the look but yea perhaps a clean looking stonewash would be better, hard to be sure. I like the overall looks, makes me want to pick it up and use it.
Thank you greatly sir for the thoughts. I think during my hand sanding I removed a little much at the ricasso... I should have true-ed up the flat-ness on the disc grinder afterwards before stone washing... Probably never would have noticed on a knife with epoxy.
a really nice knife and especially the wooden handle pieces show a very nice surface. did you use some sort of oil on it? i have here some pieces of old oak wood (aprox. 370....380 years). i try to use it for some handle but it never comes out with such a fine surface. i use different sorts of sandpaper from coarse to fine 1000 all by hand
I worked it up to around a 1000 grit finish and then buffed. If that's not a good look for your oak you could continue up to 2500 grit then buff and see how it looks.
Man that's a good question that I don't know the exact answer to. I bet it matters on the climate you live.... A good rule of thumb is probably wiping it down with some Bick 5 once a year or so.
Awesome job as always. What are you currently using for lung protection? I remember a video a while ago where you had a snorkel type respirator. Do you recommend any type of nose filters? Obviously being shaved and wearing a mask would be the best bet but I’m looking for options. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.
Just so I'm understanding, if your stitch line is 10 inches, you need 100 inches of thread and that should cover most material thickness? Sorry, I'm a little slow. Beautiful knife. The blue liners compliment the color of the oak. 👍🍻
Hey Jason, I 'm not currently taking custom orders! Thanks for the interest though! When I do have a knife for sale I sell it on my website, but I'm extremely slow and there aren't any currently there like this.
I noticed your etch was not a full dip, it shows when you put the handle on. Also yeah you should have sanded the bevel a couple more grits. Nice build though, seen better from you.

@@6Sally5 Very cool! Glad to hear your in the game!
Mate that Oak came out a treat! Better than I thought it would
That oak is FILTHY!!! I hope he kept more of that fallen branch.
That knife is both rugged and elegant! Really like your style and craft.
Thank you greatly sir! Cheers!
Really the type of knife I would spend money on. Brilliant
Glad you like it! Cheers!
Checkering file cameo!
Excellent work as usual, Doctor Keeton.
Thanks!

Another high quality build Red. Despite the flaws I’m sure your friend will be blessed to have it. Look forward to the next video.
Much appreciated!
Great craftmanship. I learned a LOT watching you work! 👍
Awesome, thank you! Glad to help
Are you kidding me?!? That is amazing work! I love how the metal bits came out! Really,

what a great looking knife. I'd be proud to carry it.
Glad you like it! Cheers!
Thank you. Excellent build. Like the blade style.

Looks great my friend 👍 I always glue my handles to the tang. It seems like wood just won't stay straight enough and I always ended up with a gap.
Thanks Richard! I could have taken it to my disc grinder after hand sanding and before stone washing and probably have solved the issue... but just was in a rush I guess. To your point epoxy would have fixed it.

I love the oak can’t wait to try it. Where do you get the countersink drill bits and the fasteners?
Gulso bolts from here - www.makermaterialsupply.com/collections/gulso-bolts
They also sell a counterbore you can buy, but I got mine from McMaster
Even with flaws that is sweet looking knife
Thank you!
Awesome job my second time watching.
Awesome! Thank you!
How could I order a knife exactly like the one in the build ?
Sorry Matt, I'm not taking orders; but I appreciate the interest! Cheers
Perfection.
Thanks John!
If you’re noticing a lot of waste thread try 5-6 times the welt length instead of 10. I do about 5 and a half and end up with just a few inches waste.

@@RedBeardOps thanks for the idea. i will try it. you do not use oil or wax for the wood?
@@henryganzer4685 I generally don't, but wouldn't be an issue to use some oil or wax for protection / luster
Hello, do you know when's the next knifemaking challenge/build-along? Anyways, you made an awesome knife.
Yeah it's the Viking Challenge that's coming out on the 20th of April I think.

It has a heavy price tag... but I use the Versaflo. Here is my review - ua-cam.com/video/DR2eLOLxMVU/v-deo.html

That's right, it's what I generally do. It's a little over kill... 8-9x may be better.
