It's fitting that David Beckham, football's most famous fashionista, should have a playing C.V. that reads like the tagline for a designer label. From an adopted homegrown hero in Manchester, he became an international icon of the game, one of the most famous people in the world, and while model-good looks, a hefty dose of media savvy and being married to a Spice Girl certainly contributed to his fame, his footballing success was built on an incredible drive and work ethic.

He made free-kicks cool.
He made MLS cool.
Bend it like Beckham.
Suman Chhetri nothing makes mls cool
@@Fergus99 true
@@Fergus99 he made it cool enough for many legends to accept transfers there
You're actually right, after Beck, more and more players with big name in their edge of retirement went to MLS,
Freekicks where always cool
MLS isn't and has never been cool
Yes that is the name of a movie.
Glad to see you mention his time at Preston as a PNE fan - he scored directly from a corner for us
is there any chance of a clip existing?
@@RobVanHars2001 There is because I've seen it, but I've not gone looking for it recently so I'm not sure where you might find it
That was the making of him
nigga
PNE were quoted £3m to sign him. We’d never spend that and I doubt UTD would have sold him.
He scored a free kick v Fulham at the Town End. Great days.
His man utd career was phenomenal, he must be rated more as a player
People still forget how good he was as a player in his peak
Albin Biju sadly his off the field career made people forgets how good he was as a player and throughout the 90s and early 00s,easily one of the few impact players in this team. Players like Becks you really need to watch a good few 90 minutes matches of him to truly understand how impactful he was.. he surely wasn’t a one trick pony
He was shit
Don't be willfully stupid
@@chanchaniceman he was one trick pony.
i not forgot am man utd we had the best of becks i dont really think at real madrid they had the system to really work around becks play literally man utd played there game around becks deep crosses, set pieces not to mention we probably had the best midfield in the world with Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Beckham really stroke gold with them all offering something different giggs pace n dribbling, scholes flair goal scoring ability, beckhams free kicks and crossing ability, keane organisation and ability to win the ball back.
The older I’ve grown, the more I’ve began to appreciate him. I’ve actually taken the time to rewatch his full match (not highlights) performances - particularly from the late 90s with United, which you can all find online on various sites - and you can tell what the hype is all about. A true big game player; led on the pitch with maturity, tough tackler, hardworking box to box menace on the flank - willing to defend as much as attack, technically gifted when it came to passing, shooting from open play and freekicks, and his tactical intelligence (ability to read the game for a player of his age at the time) was through the roof.
You have to be a football purist to appreciate a player like him. Too often, do fans tend to have a myopic view on the game now - worshipping players in a certain style but Beckham, in his own right, was just as gifted and more impactful on the pitch than most of his peers; and he played alongside and against legends in the game. I think a lot of people focus on his time at Real Madrid and after; through all the injuries, ups and downs with media and managers, he still managed to put in a good string of key performances throughout, and primarily at the tail end of, his career with Los Blancos. It’s almost similar to Gareth Bale. As a Liverpool fan, I can only hope that Trent Alexander Arnold (who reminds me of Beckham) turns out to be just as good as the man - at the very least.
Bro people think beckam is overrated because of his stint with england.
Preach On brother!! Let these kids know
You don't have to be a purist, that's whats so great about him.
He couldn't dribble and he never had much skill, but yes I agree... I think he was underrated too.
@@EnglishforFOOTBALLFANS not everybody dribbles like Cristiano or Messi!! Beckham would easily get past his opponents on the right flank with excellent dribbling and pin point crosses , what are you even taking about 🤷🏻♂
Absolute baller. Helped this kid from the USA actually develop a understanding of the game of football.
@luis _ why even comment this ? 🤦🏻♂
@luis _ fam you got too much time on your hands. Go pick up a hobby or sth kmt
luis _ nah g allow him he said football
luis _ cmon man. You literally no nothing about me, yet you still have this toxic attitude. Trust me, this is not something you want to have
And I know it’s ***know***
Almost made me cry. He was the reason why i started following football and United. I'll never forget that free kick vs Barca
Well, he was the reason I started using a hair gel lol
Same here
bro im sure u watched netflix doc its absolutely great
If you want to appreciate the great man, go watch Ruud van Nistelrooy's 44 goal season and see how much of that was from Beckham
Well done
That’s actually 1 of the main reason y he followed Beckham to Madrid
Imagine RVP Chicharito getting assist from Beckham
@@SpongeBobSquarePants89 Hate rvp for what he did to my arsenal, but that one full healthy season he had with man u where got the golden boot could have been 7-8 goals higher with Beckham.
This is quality for the youngsters who appreciate how famous David Beckham is but perhaps don’t have the full story of how he got there.
Youngsters - It’s now a sensible idea to watch some sort of highlight video showing Beckham’s best goals and assists. His success outside of football has often overshadowed his success in football so it’ll be great for you all to follow up this video with some of his best moments.
Great comment. I'd start with his performance against Barcelona at Old Trafford in '98.
Beckham was also a great role model to follow. Beckham was other than his passing and shooting power was very average he can't run or dribble, physically weak. But he train really hard.
I’m 18 and not part of the beckham era , now I understand
Spot on! My family have been longtime United fans but I was too young to remember his era. Will definitely go back and view some film
thanks dad.
The music in this video is phenomenal
Beckham is one of the greatest freekick takers of all time..
Arguably the greatest crosser of all time..
And also, one of the most clutch footballers to ever play the game..
Its sad people think he is overrated, He seriously should’ve won the Ballon d’Or at 1999
In fact, he is underrated
Passing also, man can put it anywhere you want it on the pitch, it's crazy.
If you have a free kick in injury time I wouldn't want anybody else to take it.
Exactly... He should have won the world player of the year but instead was given to Rivaldo who I believe does not deserve the world player of the year... Coming back after the world cup disappointment and the hounding by the press and fans and putting in the best season of his career was no easy feat... 0
@@neutralgrounds07 Beckham suffer the similar fate to Ribery in 2013 who also won the treble. They are the best player of that ream at the time. But due to collective greatness at both United and Bayern at the time (overall Giggs is the best player from class of 92. But there is no denying that Beckham is the best player at 1998/1999), their shine was diminished by their own team. People forget Beckham score the opening goal ar the FA Cup final and he is the one taking both corner of the champions league Final wining goal and the goal that seal united PL title because Ryan Giggs score a solo run goal. Same to Ribery people forget his assist to Robben that give Bayern the champions league
I remember back when he transferred to Real Madrid, that's when he really started to become unpopular. He was seen as overrated, like he can just pass long balls and shoot free kicks and nothing else. He was seen as stupid, conceited and worried more about his public image than football. But when you actually watched him play, it was clearly he was very often trying the hardest on the pitch and he was definitely a huge contributor in the matches he played. If I recall correctly, he more or less single handedly dragged England out of the group stage and into the quarterfinals in 2006 with crucial goals and assists. It was like he was the only one trying. Now that he's out of the spotlight and that he's been retired for a while, everyone seems to have forgotten the gossip and he's appreciated again as the great player he was.
One of the first footballing idols of mine - watching David Beckham take a free kick is poetry in motion. That technique with the outstretched arm and the body leaning back is etched in my brain forever. As a United fan I'm also proud to say that he'll always be United for Life no matter what and he was vastly underrated for England. What a player
Could it be that David Beckham's greatest contribution to his generation was exposing the fickle cruelty that characterises tabloid newspaper reporting, and thus, inspiring a generation of young people to seek news sources with integrity? Embodying the notion that despite the best efforts of others to paint a picture of you with their words, consistent noble action will make apparent your true moral fabric? Or maybe it's that good haircuts get you noticed? Whatever the truth is another fantastic video had no doubt contributed to revealing it. Cheers guys.
Brilliantly, brilliantly said. Been watching all the old games/highlights, during the lockdown. MATE. Beckham was actually world class - like, legit the guy could play. He was a lot more technical, in hindsight, than I remember him being. I think a combination of the media and our own expectations of what being a star player entails - coupled with the emergence of more eye-catching, tricky players who fulfilled that criteria (Rivaldo, Denilson etc) were to blame. Also, it's likely Beckham was a makeshift winger because of his superior crossing ability - but he was really a centre midfielder playing on the wing (it appears so). Easy to see with hindsight!
absolutely
I remember being really annoyed when Kanchelskis left and Becks stepped into his slot on the right side of midfield, but over the course of the '96 season Becks won me over, he was intelligent, he was hardworking, and he had heart - traits often overlooked when assessing a footballer, but these traits helped him overcome his limited natural ability (of say someone like Giggs or Scholes, who were miles ahead in terms of their natural ability), and he instead honed his skill to perfect the few things we was good at, which, primarily, was delivering that cross, and taking that shot. Traits he was truly world class in.
The above being said, Kanchelskis at his United peak, wow what a sight.
I remember when he played his first game for the LA Galaxy like it was yesterday. It was a day I’ll never forget because i knew that his debut for the Galaxy that he was going to change the way the MLS was seen in America. He was one of the most underrated players of all time and he was one of the best English players ever (i could be capping when i say that though)
@luis _ It is, even for us stateside. Regardless he changed our access to viewing the sport. A lot changed because of his arrival. For that I'm grateful.
@@jeremyg4560 Just let that toxic asshole be.
no cap
no cap his stats are decent i looked through the statistics just to make this point
The Free Kick vs Greece and the Penalty vs Argentina are both iconic footballing memories from my childhood that I'll remember forever
I don't believe it, DAVID BECKHAM HAS SCORED THE GOAL THAT WILL SURELY SEND ENGLAND TO THE WORLD CUP FINALS!!!!
Started practicing freekicks from then an aged 6
It's sad to see most of the world forget how amazing Becks was as a player. His right foot is legendary.
Just remembering that injury time freekick, against Greece, makes my hairs stand up. What a moment!
@Well then so what are you trying to prove ? Greece haven't been relevant ever since anyway....it's a Beckham's topic why you gotta butt in ?
That free kick against Argentina in the 2002 WC was great too, especially as it was against Argentina, and it meant Becks could finally lay the daemons of ‘98 to rest.
The reason i got into football in the first place. One of the best Free Kick Takers of all time
I find it kind of fascinating. When people accuse of the modern players of being social media stars rather than footballers, and you ask them who do you think caused all this, they probably say Beckham; in a way he was the first one for a long time, if not the first one (you can argue Best was one too, but I wasn't alive at the time to judge).
Yet, you will find few players who work as hard as him; he is everything those old geezers who hate modern footballers, want those footballers to be. Tremendously skilled, hardworking, and dedicated to football. He just so happen to be also basically an A-Lister. And he is hardworking on all aspects of the game, a lot of the superstars often take a break on defense (admittedly for tactical reasons sometimes). Beckham will get down and do the dirty work, do the tackles, track back and lead. People who don't rate him think of him as a one trick pony, when in reality he was the complete midfielder. All he ever lacked was rapid pace (and dribble).
He have a habit of proving people wrong. You can't win with kids, become the star of one of the most dominant side in English history. Disgrace for England, turn national hero. Surplus to requirement, help Real win a title. Going to be a failure/disinterested in MLS, worked his socks off. Not good enough for Europe anymore, joins both AC Milan and Paris. There is something to admire about the golden boy who don't mind a bit of dirt.
Spot on.
Beckham has the work ethic to back himself. It's not easy if u are a player u try to promote the league sometimes just need to not let yourself get carried away
the difference between Beckham and Gazza/Best was that Beckham recognized that he was a footballer first. Both Gazza and Geroge best, arguably, didn't fulfill their potential. Beckham, Messi, Giggs, and Ronaldo all recognized that they were footballers first, and model/celebrity/whatever next and they never allowed off the pitch activities to interfere with their on pitch performance. I say this as a United fan and I think Fergie was wrong in his judgement.
Roy Keane never had a problem with either Beckham or Ronaldo. this is one guy who would never tolerate his teammates not putting 110% every shift. He saw how those players trained, their attitude, and their vanities. this should tell you everything you need to know about them.
He retired at 38, most football celebs would've just retired if they find celebrity career better, like Cantona or Nakata. But Beckham still took care of his fitness, still trained, which fans should respect that he still actually had passion for football...
I mean Ronaldo is the biggest celeb baller ever really and look at where he's still at. You can be both a baller and a star at the same time if football is still your main focus.
Beckham, Yeboah, Nayim. These 3 names I will never ever forget as they were apart of my childhood for their iconic goals we would try to recreate.
You must be about 34-35 haha - I remember those goals like they were yesterday. Nayim's against Arsenal was the first goal that made hold my head in my hands. Yeboah's was probably the best the Premier League has ever seen and Beckham's....the rest is history :)
@Anthony Mcken haha not yet 35 meself - and watched that match live mate
Man this video really hit the emotional strings for some reason. What a resilient man. Becks is a legend
He really is underrated because of how famous he became outside of the game. You don't get runner-up in the Balon D'or for nothing!
One of the most under appreciated footballers ever unreal levels of technical ability I believe he’d be more appreciated in today’s game because technical players are more appreciated today he’d be a de bruyne type of player he is definitely one of the Top 50-100 players of all time
He was the one who got me into enjoying the game. Seeing him play was a beauty. Will never see another player with his ability for a long time sadly
@Anthony Mcken who?
He is simply the reason why I started to be a Red Devil. Because his curve ball just so elegance, like an artist drawing with his paintbrush.
So you just admitted your a glory supporter 😂😂
What makes him all the more meritorious an individual is that he could easily have become a parody of himself, a joke - a Balotelli or a Pogba or a George Best, but that work ethic was so strong, it rescued him every time. Just now ,when we are seeing footballers at their most petulant and greediest, he reminds us that now and then there is a good 'un amongst them.
Under appriciated. Totally. Was genuinely world class. And he came bk from the abyss to change peoples opinions. Still doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
Underneath all the photoshoots and Spice Girl marriage, from 1998-2001, David Beckham was one of the best players on the planet. Legitimately football's biggest ever star off the pitch.
Enjoyed that vid 👌
Do this with other great and popular players of the past
Thank you tifo football for the stories during the quarantine.
The first thing that comes to mind whenever I heard of Beckham is those curly set pieces, specially free kicks
i honestly just have to say i love your videos so much keep up the good work :)
Thank you @tifo for the additional vids. Loving it!
Raul? Scholesy? Next?
5:00 Watching this goal now still gives me goosebumps, even after all these years
I love this tifo, infact I like all of your uploads. Thank you very much ❤️
Thank you! I was thinking the other day about how a lot of people dismiss David Beckham as just a ritzy celebrity, people tend to forget that behind the celebrity wife and the jet-setting lifestyle there was a footballer of immense talent.
David Beckham. My man. My first and last ever favourite player. All those childhood memories come back watching something about this legend.
Tifo Football, all your videos are amazing but your brief history series is definitely the best in my opinion. Please do more and keep up the good work
He also had the coolest hairstyles of all time.
Great video, Becks is a Legend. That music was sooo dramatic ahahaha.
thanks for keeping us entertained Tifo ❤️
What an inspiration, the famous number 7, loved all over the globe the legend DAVID BECKHAM
Damn Tifo you really read my mind. Been waiting for a quality video on Becks!
One of the most underrated superstar ever
I had chills watching this...great work
Amazing content, and what a player, again there will no other alike him and the rest of the greatest players to ever grace the pitch, thank you,Mr . Beckham .......
this was so beautifully arranged and narrated. The end had me elated
He was the reason i fell in love with football.
And the number reason I respect the number 7 shirt so much.
Probably the most underrated footballer of his time. His off the pitch fame just overshadowed his ability and talent. One of my favourite players ever only second to a little ginger prince whom he knew very well.
well done as always, thanks Tifo
He is the epitome of The Beautiful Game.
This channel really is ridiculously underrated.
Great content as usual.
I always said I have huge respect for him to come back from 98, his treatment was disgraceful and 99% of people wouldn’t have had the character and the balls to return from that. Legend 🙌🙌
beckham was an absolute legend! i feel privilaged to have got to see him and his generation as i grew up. players like ronaldinho, kaka etc. a dream to watch
one of the best Brief History episodes. he was a true great of the game
I will never forget that game against Greece or the feeling I had when that free kick went in
I know it's not on brand but I'd be really interested to hear Tifo football's best England team of players capped after Italia '90.
When you have Beckham on the right side, and when he crosses, you only need to lift your leg a little bit or turn your head to make it a goal. That's easy.
.
.
I forget which pundit once said that about Beckham. But for me, as a person who watched his play from 1998 to 2009 (especially when he was at Man United and Madrid) it was pretty accurate.
He is the reason Van Nistelroij scores a lot (I like them both)
Also Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke
Absolute legend of a player! Very underrated for how good he was and has to be one of the top 5 dead ball specialists to ever play the game...
My forever idol. The reason I watch football and support Manchester United till now..
I cried while watching his last match at PSG
Thing is, his dribbling wasnt the best and there are talents he didnt posses. He was also a superstar and in a hollywood style life. But we also remember how he was disicplined and hardworking, despite his posh background, silencing his critiques and put downers with his performance rather than moaning.
He wasn't posh
What, but he didn't have a posh background.
Sorry, I meant with his life as a celebrity, not his growing up as a working class.
L.A. GALAXY LEGEND!!! Thank you, England! Beckham grew soccer here more than you can imagine! This angeleno is grateful for becks!
Great video. I love this game !!
That highlights edit was a nice detail :')
Beckham was/is underestimated given his public persona. It was good that this video asserted this from the beginning.
I would love a video on the history of Nicolas Anelka, leaving Arsenal too early, ill fated stint at Real, all the others clubs he played for etc
He was electric as a teen at Arsenal. Should have been so much more
Theres already a film about it.. Anelka: Misunderstood on Netflix
Thanks for the reminder of just how good Becks was. And that's coming from a Liverpool fan as much as it pains me to praise him :).
Quality content as always.
3:35 when he says highlights.... Brilliant.
Thinking about that Greece goal still gives me the feels
I wish youve added his OBE. However, it was a bril presention of our beloved United Golden Balls Legend. Cheers mate 🔴⚫
Surely one of the most underestimated players in history. Simply world class throughout his whole career
Facts!!
This man is the reason I fell in love with the game
Such an inspirational personality.
When he went to us, Ac Milan, he was at the end of his career, but we've loved him a lot, he played very well. Fun facts: I've still got a "Mickey Mouse" number where they talked about him, when he was 13, as a brillant future star for English football.
Supremely underrated on that Madrid team. Not many English players can make that team and he did. As a Barca fan, he was incredible to watch.
Knew Paul had written this one when the green and gold scarf story came out ❤
One of the players that made me love football
I remember some good LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders games over the years. LA were very much the top team in the west for a very long time.
Beckingham Palace is in my home town, Sawbridgeworth. Even the coolest chill in Sawbo.
What a professional man, excelente
An incredible football pioneer and icon, both on and off the pitch.
I was a 10yo kid in Brazil in 98 when I saw this guy playing, them came the trebble, basically, there were no bigger Beckham fan in Brazil, and I doubt there is still, from that moment on, he was my idol, and if I was going to play, I would imitate him in every way I could...
I am a diehard Liverpool fan but I started watching football because of Beckham. I can never forget his free kicks
Talk of that free-kick goal he scored against Greece for England literally makes me well up. The England side were awful that day and I feared we wouldn't be at the 2002 WC. Everyone looked tired and off the pace except for Becks. Popping up at right back making a tackle and then inside left whipping the ball in - he was everywhere and dragged us through that game. After all that running he still had enough in his legs to strike the free kick the way he did. Absolute legend and deserved to win the Ballon d'Or in 99 easily. He's almost under-rated as everyone gets drawn to his fame for stuff off the pitch. But just watch highlights of England and Utd games from 97 to the early noughties and see how many goals he's involved in. I think only Lampard has more Prem goals from outside the box and he played a lot more seasons than Becks. Miss him.
That Simione is atleti manager now, damn long time since I was 8yo
🤣😅
The legends game vs Bayern summed him up. He was fit, active, busy, productive and the crowd's darling again. Proper legend of the game, at least for England and probably the USA. (LFC fan)
Easily the best right mid/wing player, yet still so underrated.
Di Maria is way way better
Beautiful story
A truly transcendent player. Thank you for doing him rigorous justice.

Beckham's game against Greece the final World Cup qualifier in 2001 is one of the greatest single performances of all-time. Literally dragged an awful England team into the finals all on his own.
These are the highest quality videos in football
Always a superb player. He was often overlooked by critics because he wasn't fast enough for a winger and not tough enough for a central midfielder, but teams won games with him in their side.
With Great popularity comes Greater Ups and Downs..
the phrase 'bend it like beckham' has been ingrained into my memory before i rally knew who he was
Even though I’m an Arsenal fan, and we had a rivalry with Man Utd in late 90s/early 00s, I loved Beckham when I was a kid, especially with England. I had a couple hairstyles like him 😂 I also have a no.23 signed and framed Real Madrid shirt in storage that my dad got me for £150 about 10 years ago. Never thought about selling it either.
I have been a liverpool supporter my whole life. But there is no player I love as much as I love Beckham. He is who I modeled my whole game after
This guy might be the reason why I love football
