  • Just south of Pensacola, Florida, are some very long islands called the Gulf Islands. A large portion of this land comprises the Gulf Islands National Lakeshore and at the very western end is Fort Pickens. It's quite an interesting historical site with a campground within it which allows you easy access to the beautiful beaches around here.
    It's a federal property so bring your National Parks pass and enjoy!

    I grew up camping at Ft Pickens! We had a number of “pet” alligators there-including two named Biscuit and Marshmallow. My dad also caught a shark fishing on the bay. It’s a beautiful area!

    Nice video, Jay. All I can think is this is how the seeds of a thru-hike get sown. 😊

    This is our favorite time of the year. In another month or so, the tourists start showing up and we avoid the beaches until fall.

    Pensacola is my hometown. After Hurricane Ivan went thru in 2004, i biked from the gate to Fort Pickens when the roadway was shutdown due to washout. 14 miles out and back with a mile section of sand we had to push bikes over. Great memory because we had no one around and we got to see all areas of the Fort. Glad you got to spend some time there.

    Jay, you drove right past my old house that I lived in 1980-1981 while I was going through flight training. Glad that you had a good day to enjoy the beach.

    My first duty station out of Paris Island in 1982 was at NTTC Corry station to become a 2600. And then back in 1985 after tour on Okinawa for more schooling. Been back several times since Love that beach. Spent many weekends out at Ft Pickens. Go over to NASand see the Museum and Blue Angels. Semper Fi.

    Welcome! To our hometown of Pensacola! We camp several times a year at Ft. Pickens which is one of our favorite spots for beach camping. The best is in July during Red, White and Blues week. The Blue Angels have an annual air show at Pensacola Beach.

    Gulf Shores State Park in Alabama is an awesome place. It is not too far from you following the road along the beach into Alabama. Maybe stop at Florida-Bama for a bushwhacker.
    The campground has awesome bike trails and a heated pool.

    I’m in Gulfport, Ms. You’re just about 2 hr from me. We have 2 nice hikes here. The Tuxachannie Trail follows an old logging road & goes to an old pow camp for German soldiers. Another is Blackwater.

    Is that a baerskin hoodie your wearing do you like them and would it be a good one for through hiking AT in cooler temps seems maybe too heavy??

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  5 місяців тому

      So far it has its pros and cons. It's way too heavy for a thru hike though and all the pockets are unecessary for a thru hike . I'd stick with a thinner fleece and/or an ultralight puffy as well.
