Amazing how believably they could pull off that cutesy "wholesome girls next door" act when nothing could be further from the truth They were rockers in every sense of the word.
Exactly!! But, The GoGos were basically a bubble gum LA group who actually thought they were a punk band, which is quite laughable that their perspective was more wishful than realistic. Delusion is huge amongst Hollywood films too, they go hand in hand trying to capture the other raw talent out there, but miss the mark and don’t get the essence. The GoGos mostly had a sound because of Jane, and that’s it. The wardrobe and hair were weak. They tried at least. I liked the songs, but it’s important to own being a bubblegum band instead of actually thinking ur The Sex Pistols and saying ur a punk band when ur far from it. 😢
@@LGAussie They don't claim to be a punk band once they started recording, but when they started out they were more punk, the direction changed when Elissa Bello & Margot Oliveira left and Gina Schock & Kathy Valentine came onboard.
this is right before charlotte went to rehab for heroin and belinda first admitted she had a serious coke problem. also less than a year before they broke up. the most painful thing is how distant jane looks when she says "it seemed like a fun idea at the time" like for her it was already over.
Why is it hard to watch? Charlotte has always been one of the more quiet member in the band. I couldn't care less if she's on crack. If anything it shows how innocent music can be in a time where music is actually music. You know what's hard to watch? All that crap on today's news...Miley Cyrus, Kardashians, Bieber and all that shits.
I remember this interview when I was a high school kid. The line I remember was, 2:32--"...there's not one dog in the group!" Joan seemed astonished by that.
Can you imagine being the guy making it with one of these girls back in the day? I doubt if that guy knew how truly lucky he was back in the day. That’s how exceptionally handsome guys seems to be and I guess that’s just the way it is.
Belinda kicked her out, partly due to money and partly due to Belinda not liking some things Kathy said on Twitter. They brought her back at the beginning of 2018.
I saw the Go Go's with the Flock of Seagulls in concert, it was a fantastic 80's concert-just pure MTV fun. Super adored Jane Wiedlin, she was the sweetest and cutest. Can't remember if I ever saw this episode, but probably did.
The only weak link at this interview is Joan Rivers. Disappointing. She only did stupid questions: "What's your favorite actor?" etc etc. Damn, no clever interviewer does this amateur thing. Specially interviewing a great band of 5 smart gals. I really expected more intelligent questions from the legendary comedian. And nothing like this level "What's your favorite color?" "What's your zodiac sign?" Frustating...
@nasdlu2010 what was the reality? they werent fighting all of the time, were they? i knew there were problems, but what was the extent of it? from the last studio album, it was sad to hear the lyrics to "daisy chain". i didnt realize their demise was so sudden..."we never even said goodbye sweet jane".
After they released Talk Show, which Jane had been the primary songwriter, their label informed them that royalties which (up to that point) had been paid solely to the songwriters (usually Jane and Charlotte, periodically Kathy) would now be split evenly among all five members. The problem was the label made it effective retroactively to include Talk Show. Jane had every right to be pissed to be told this after the fact. She was also irritated that the group overruled Jane’s request to sing lead on one track she wrote which was particularly personal. So she felt it was time to move on.
@@kcindc5539 And it certainly was time for her to move on. The decision to make bc the only lead singer, their "frontman," had disastrous consequences. It severely limited their sound, as well as burning out her voice. And it didn't help that Charlotte had a terribly debilitating addiction. Their worst mistake was getting rid of Ginger Canzoneri.
It's a close call, imho. I might give the Go-Go's the slight edge, having the early punk edge and coming first. I dig them both and still have a massive crush on Jane Wiedlin and Susanna Hoffs. 😍
There are a few songs by The Bangles I like, that can rival any Go Go's songs but overall I like The Go Go's way more. This is based on the number of songs I like from each band from their entire catalogue of songs / albums, The Go Go's wins hands down for me.

Joan hadn't hit her stride yet. I agree with you (as i usually do), but i found certain segments informative. Not a total loss. This was over 35 yrs ago. Things were different.
The Police hired them as an opening act in Europe and Sting was concerned they weren't hard core enough. Sting later said 2 months later they were psychotic psychopaths 😂 Worse than the Doors and the Rolling Stones
I went to HS in Baltimore with Gina Shock, the drummer. She was a hoot. Very witty and funny. Gina still has the Baltimore (Dundalk) accent.
That was a great interview. The ladies are all so friendly and personable...so good to see
My first concert, Greek theater, The Go-Go's! Circa 1981 Loved it!
Jane is so cute I love her and she is awesomely beautiful
Wow, whoever did this gets a freakin' gold star. Thanks for posting.
all of the Go-Go's are legends... just like Joan Rivers... "Can We Talk/Tawk ?"

they can have man crushes too if thats what you mean if it is even true that she is
I LOVE it that Belinda's crush was Rutger Hauer -- such a handsome, mysterious man!
I remember these days. Joan was so awesome. Miss her every day. RIP Shoutout to Belinda!
God I remember watching this at that time and being so in love with Jane Weidlin.
This is Joan Rivers guest hosting for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show (NBC). Not the short lived Joan Rivers Show which ran on Fox.
Gina is gorgeous!! They all are!!

This Joan Rivers subbing for Johnny Carson. All the questions are, about men and if they fight.
Right... If Johnny was there and asked the same questions, these comments would be calling him a misogynist.
The worlds best all female rock band... Ever.
