I cook different type off fish in foil all the time, being from South Africa and on the Isle of Man now had to adapt the way I cooked the fish. feel free to contacted me All the best
ON THE TOPIC OF SCALES: Its sometimes easier to scale AFTER cooking with this method. Just gently scrape with your utensil before eating and they'll come right off. OR use less butter, and put the little you use in the fish. With less moisture the skin is likely to stick to the foil. the skin will come off the meat as you spread open the wrap, scales and all. But the first method is better. And just a little added common sense, if you don't want to be bothered and or have a fish with prominent scales, just go on and scale it while you clean it near the water. That's all.
I cook mine this way for 2 hours and the bones break down and can eat the whole fish. Got tired of getting flour, pan, shortening and cleaning stuff together before hikes.
I noticed you cook bone-in. Is there a "safest" way to deal with the bones after? I'm thinking of using this method for a future campout with small kids.
do you have to clean the fish guts out and remove scales before doing this? I have a big knife so I can chop its head off but a little squeamish with guts..
Sweet and simple! You can sub coconut oil for the butter I'd think. I like to salt and pepper or sprinkle some cajun seasoning on it too. To each our own. And for the goofus one here use lots of lemon to gain the benefit of the neuroenhancers it produces! Lol
+Josh Wesling Works fine with walleye. You can use any fish, really. The foil wrap is going to steam whatever fish in there. If that's the taste you're looking for, this is a good way to cook.
Consider taking Crisco. It becomes a solid when cold, and isn't as apt to spill. Foil wraps are delicious, but anything gets monotonous. Check out my 2,552-mile canoe trip: bigrivercanoetrip.blogspot.com/
I see you mention "any fish" Many times, but have yet to see you specifically address the scales! Do you need to scale a fish, that has scales, before using this method? Or does this method somehow destroy the fish scales, or at least make them easily fall off?
Pressure treated wood has formaldehyde in it. It is used to inhibit rot in the wood. It is also used in inbalming corpse's, and is toxic to humans if inhaled. If durning it, it may release vapors that can be inhaled. If inhaled in low doses over time it can cause lung cancer..
Caught i fish yesterday and have never cooked over a fire other than a grill i want to cook it in a campfire nothing makes you feel more manly than cooking over a fire
Finished cooking it a couple hours ago and it was awesome 10 more minutes on the fire it would have been perfect but had to finish cooking it in a frying pan but it was delicious thank you for the video it really helped.
Survival Common Sense ok, i didn't see them after the unwrapping. but the flesh seemed really fluffy, isn't it more work to rake them off (with the flesh at it) after the cooking instead of doing it in beforehand? whats your advice?
Depends on what fish. Like this trout the skin will get cooked and be a nice crunchy part of the meat, adds a salty flavor too without adding salt. Now if you have a large scale fish Like hogfish that skin is pretty inedible.
That looks great. Going to try this tonight in the fire pit.
Great! Let me know how it comes out!
i perfer prime rib in foil over some coals. but as you made fish with butter is usually my go to when camping. nice video
That's a cool little stove
you eat the scale?
Yes - it's C.T Fisher 6-inch full-tang bushcraft knife. I like it very much!
Very helpful video! I'd like to cook fish with alumunium foil but I didn't know how.
Adelaide Kingston This is a simple method that works really well. I'd suggest trying it at home, then go on a campout and wow your friends.
i love this idea! only question is-why not scale the fish?
Lina Figueroa xoxo trout don’t actually have scales. Normally you would want to
I use heavy duty, just because it's thicker. I think about any foil would work fine.

^^^^What he said.
Or scale the fish after you catch and clean it, like he said at the end of his post especially if you like the skin
I cook mine this way for 2 hours and the bones break down and can eat the whole fish. Got tired of getting flour, pan, shortening and cleaning stuff together before hikes.
Tried it, came good, but guess adding lime make it a little sour - thanku vry much !
I noticed you cook bone-in. Is there a "safest" way to deal with the bones after? I'm thinking of using this method for a future campout with small kids.
That DOES look good!! I'll have to go try that now :)
nice knife. is it a scandy grind on the blade?
Do you have a video on how to gut and be-head a fish?
You'll like it!
Thank you
This fun to watch. 👌
Hi just saw this video. Where did you get that stove?
How to make it??
Check out the rest of the posts. There are several stoves shown.
What is the name of the fire pit with a feeder, or did you make it?
How long would you recommend cooking Pennsylvania Trout over and open fire, like with wood in the bush?
Until the flesh loses its translucency and flakes easily.
can this same technique be used for boiling ?
Aluminum cans?
Great video thanks
is there a better type of foil to use?
Nice stove can we it up close
It's a Deadwood Stove, and here's the review:ua-cam.com/video/jlE-iA7rfQA/v-deo.html
How about just throwing it straight on some coals? I assume that would work too.
Actually, the kids caught them from Shevlin Pond!
Fish looks tasty all so think you
do you have to clean the fish guts out and remove scales before doing this? I have a big knife so I can chop its head off but a little squeamish with guts..
+OdiusTV Gut the fish. You'll get over being squeamish.
Always remove the guts, that's full of bacteria, bile, and nasty nasty flavors you don't want exploding in your nice fish fillets
I have not tried it. I don't think it would work, simply because the foil wrap would have to be waterproof.
Sweet and simple! You can sub coconut oil for the butter I'd think. I like to salt and pepper or sprinkle some cajun seasoning on it too. To each our own. And for the goofus one here use lots of lemon to gain the benefit of the neuroenhancers it produces! Lol
If you only had a few seasonings while cooking a fish is that ok
+Crazywolflover I like my fish with no seasoning at all, so yes it's ok
Out in the woods, dig a hole until you hit clay, pack the fish in clay and cook it that way, Not to many survivalists carry tin foil on them.
+greenmarine5 Or shovels.
+Survival Common Sense 🙌✊✋
No clay here in Florida and sand isn't appealing
Could u do this with a bass question
Sure. Or a walleye or just about any fish.
Thanks it is yummy
May i ask if we have to use lemons
You have my permission to skip the lemons. Use whatever you want.
No need to pre scale the fish?
Depends on the fish. You can use fillets also. For trout, the skins comes right off when it's cooked.
do u need butter
I don't understand the scales part. Do you eat them?
You could, but in this case I didn't. In a survival situation, you'd eat as much of the fish as you could!
Leon Pantenburg how did you not eat the scales? you said you didnt scale the fish.. and then you cooked it.. do you just spit them out?
What Yorkshire fly fisher said.
Extra work.
can you use oil instead?
Yes you can
have you ever done this with walleye?
+Josh Wesling Works fine with walleye. You can use any fish, really. The foil wrap is going to steam whatever fish in there. If that's the taste you're looking for, this is a good way to cook.
See I want to do a long solo canoe trip and don't want to deal with carrying oil, so looking for some easy alternatives
Consider taking Crisco. It becomes a solid when cold, and isn't as apt to spill. Foil wraps are delicious, but anything gets monotonous. Check out my 2,552-mile canoe trip: bigrivercanoetrip.blogspot.com/
Cool blog thanks for sharing, makes me want to do something like that, how would I cook with Crisco, just add some to a frying pan and fry it?
I see you mention "any fish" Many times, but have yet to see you specifically address the scales! Do you need to scale a fish, that has scales, before using this method? Or does this method somehow destroy the fish scales, or at least make them easily fall off?
Dose this work with bluegill
Works with any fish, and with most cuts of meat.
Thanks
yummy.....wow
what if you were in a survival situation and you did not have foil?
Just wondering why the foil didn't get on fire
It wasn't on the fire long enough.
I use a fork and peel the meat off the bones. You have to be careful about the bones, especially with kids.
this is cool :)
why dont you scale it?
That's why his name is survival"CommonSense".
and at coal ? how long in each side ?
about 6 or 7
I hope that wasn't a pressure treated 2x4, as fire wood.
+Skeptic Spartan It wasn't.
+Survival Common Sense
cool. Butter and lemon, that looked pretty tasty.
It was. I always do food vids around meal time.
Good idea
Pressure treated wood has formaldehyde in it. It is used to inhibit rot in the wood. It is also used in inbalming corpse's, and is toxic to humans if inhaled. If durning it, it may release vapors that can be inhaled. If inhaled in low doses over time it can cause lung cancer..
Nope - butter just makes it moister and tastier.
do you eat the skin?
You could. In this case, I didn't.
Leon Pantenburg the skin is a delight :)
It could be.
Small scale fish it's 👍. Large scale fish it's not good.
You could, but I just peel it off with a fork.
But but but you wouldn't have lemons and butter in an actual survival situation!!!
If you packed them, you would.
Yah cause I will definetly have butter in a survival situation
Caught i fish yesterday and have never cooked over a fire other than a grill i want to cook it in a campfire nothing makes you feel more manly than cooking over a fire
Absolutely! And it's even better if you get to wear a sheath knife on your belt!
Finished cooking it a couple hours ago and it was awesome 10 more minutes on the fire it would have been perfect but had to finish cooking it in a frying pan but it was delicious thank you for the video it really helped.
a big leaf
You would not be able to use this cooking technique.
Lemon, not lime. lol
how did the scales disappear? lol
Raked them off with a fork.
Survival Common Sense ok, i didn't see them after the unwrapping. but the flesh seemed really fluffy, isn't it more work to rake them off (with the flesh at it) after the cooking instead of doing it in beforehand? whats your advice?
You can use this technique with fillets, whole fish or fillets with the skin attached. Don't over think this simple method of cooking.
im hungry as fuck now...
I would Cut the Skin off the Fish
Depends on what fish. Like this trout the skin will get cooked and be a nice crunchy part of the meat, adds a salty flavor too without adding salt. Now if you have a large scale fish Like hogfish that skin is pretty inedible.
Kreepy into lol
