- A legend known for his soulful voice has been recognised. Sir John Rowles has officially become a Knight Companion of the NZ Order of Merit for services to entertainment. Te Okiwa McLean was there as he received this accolade.
Long long overdue. Absolutely phenomenal talent.

So deserved, because this man was a mega talent, he had a voice that was better than Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck put together . He was so gifted .
Beautiful Sir John Rowles, It was a pity, some of us, of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps on a Tour of Duty in November 1979 Pacific Pact to 3/4 Cavalry 25th infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, did not get to meet you, But you were the man in the 60's when myself and my Army Brothers served in Malaya and the Vietnam War. ........Thank You for your Service.......Sir.
Saw Sir John Rowles in wellington in 1968. Backed by a full orchestra and hard on the heels of his two world wide hits "If i only had time" and "Hush not a word to mary". He could blow any balad singer out of the park in those days. Yes even messers Jones etc etc. Awe inspiring to witness. Thoroughly deserves the Knighthood and accompanying accolades.
Apparently if he'd have given up on the Hawaii lifestyle and went to England, he would have truely cracked it and I don't doubt that for one minute. I heard he reckoned it was too cold, (Don't know if thats true or not?) Sad though, as with a lot of famous people, had he looked after his money ie investments he would have been very well of in later life.

About 15 or so years ago, (Now 2024) I went to Te Atatu Nth RSA to watch Eddie Low and Kevin Greaves vocals/guitar. Part way through what was a Great show John Rowles comes in and walks up to the front row and listened t o a song or 2. Then he belted out, "I can't stop!"....Then he did stop. Did it again, "I can't stop!"......again he stopped. Then a third time "I can'ts stop (Kevin Greaves carried on with the guitar and JR was away, "I can't stop, loving you"........ The absolute power of his voice was unbelievable. Then the three of them did a few more songs, and then much to our pleasyre all 3 of them got on a guitar each did a couple more songs then started calling for songs from the audience. What an absolute Legend these guys were that afternoon. Best $15.00 I ever spent in my life. My first consert was Fleetwood Mac. I would rather this RSA afternoon concert 'Any day of the week' I still feel the energy of that afternoon so many years later. Wasn't really a John Rowles fan but from that afternoon I WAS and still am. Haven't seen Eddie around and sadly Kevin Greaves died last year. Him and his ol man Rusty were good country type singers from West Akl. We also claim John Rowles evenyhough his true home was Kawerau. He lived in Tat Nth for some time even at the age he is in this video I use to see him down the shops. Keeps asking me to sing with him, then I wake up!
Seen in concert many times latter years,so loved him.
