"Eminence Front" is the greatest song to come out of the Kenny Jones era. The synthesizer lines are awesome. John's bass playing is simply wicked. And Pete's lyrics are downright vitriolic. These are the reasons why this tune is a timeless classic!
Love the simplicity of the song, so closet guitarists like me can play most of The Who's songs because they are relatively easy to play, excluding the Townsend Solo's. Pete's a pretty good singer and I liked how Roger Daultry sang backup while playing guitar. I've always wondered if Keith Moon was alive, would he have played the drum part differently than Kenny. I'm Canadian, so I'm proud of the great success of The Guess Who but The Who are in my top 10 of all the greatest bands of all time. Townshend's body of work is absolutely phenomenal as his originality, breakthroughs with key boards and synthesizers in a rock band were amazing. He was the total package when it came to writing great songs with great lyrics, choreographing and composing like no other and even making movies. Smashing up equipment was an added bonus to the live show. Again very original. Tommy, Quadraphenia, songs like Pinball Wizard, Live Reign Or' Me, Baba O'Reilly, Won't Get Fooled Again, Can't Explain, etc, etc. and on and on is quite a legacy to leave behind. Anyways Randy Bachman, guitarist for the later named Guess Who and Pete Townshend both picked the same name for their respective bands. So when Randy met up with Pete in an English pub, he was going to lay claim to the name "The Who". He confronted Townshend, who was drinking and probably on drugs at the time. Pete told Bachman to f*ck off, laughed in his face and proceeded to ignore him. So an always sober Bachman decided this was a war he couldn't win cause lawyers cost money and he had none, so he changed his band name to The Guess Who. I guess Pete got his point across. LOL. In my opinion, The Who are right up there with Led Zeppelin and The Stones. Rock on Pete, you have my admiration and awe.

If you like The Who , check out several songs front their “Live at Leeds” album. Specifically “Young Man’s Blues” ,”Summertime Blues”, “Shakin’ all Over”, “My Generation” and “Magic Bus”. All live versions, the last two are extended versions, with medleys of other songs added in. And the are British, came about the same time as the Beatles, The Rilling Stones, and Led Zeppelin.
Dominic Rossitto I’ve got to add to this, because they later released the 33 songs that is Live at Leeds. As great as the original 6 songs were, it’s just a small taste of everything else on it, including all of Tommy. Even though it’s deemed as arguably the greatest live album of all time, it seems like the later releases flew under the radar, making it an underrated performance all together.

Like how the cameramen completely forgot John Entwistle existed while laying down one of the nastiest bass licks in rock. But let's highlight some dude who was never in the band playing the synth. That's what's important, am I right lol.
Yup, that's what I don't like about this live video. Entwistle was killing it and the camera man totally ignored him lol! I hope he sees the one I sent him on Instagram, more focus on those incredible bass runs.

This was from the dearly departed Maple Leaf Gardens during The Who's first final tour in 1982. They put this whole concert on TV up here one week after it happened. I was 12 years old and I remember it. From this concert you might want to checkout "The Quiet One"...Very good!!! Also from The Who: 5:15 , The Punk And The Godfather, The Real Me, Dr. Jimmy, A Quick One While He's Away from the 1968 Rock and Roll Circus (live), and , Young Man's Blues Live from The Isle of Wight 1970 ( possibly the most devastating piece of live music ever recorded!!!)...
Agree on your taste in men; disagree on your taste in songs. I think this is an okay song for the Who (even though it might rank as top quality for another band) but nowhere near the magnificence of anything from Who's Next and almost anything from Quadrophenia.
So cool! My brother went to that concert and the next day I was flying out to London and most of the band was at the check-in desk on the same flight! I got Pete Townshend and Kenney Jones autograph on my airline ticket!
When you're rich & famous, it's SO much easier to hide and delude yourself. Truth. THAT is what the song is about. Townshend used to introduce it, often with a reference, like: "This is what happens when you take too much white powder..."
I went and saw them live last year, and I did not expect it to be as amazing and memorable as it was. These guys are pushing 80 and they can still rock just as hard as they did back then.
When looking for Who videos, I would suggest sticking with those that have John Entwistle, the original bassist, and really try to focus in on his playing. He was one of, if not the best bassist around.
I understand John is universally regarded as one of the top three and for many the greatest bassist of all time. As far as I am aware he is far from underrated. In fact he is the only member of the band (one of the most talented ever individually and collectively) to have such universal acclaim for his instrument. Keith Moon is ranked usually in the top two among rock drummers and Townshend in the top ten among guitarists. The only one who is underrated in my opinion is Daltrey who has a voice that is just insane, but bizarrely never appears to be ranked among the top ten rock vocalists.
I should correct that to say rock bassist. There are many jazz bassists up there with John, like Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Mingus, Jimmy Garrison, Ron Carter and Paul Chambers to name but a few.
Entwistle was a lot of things Underrated was not one of them. Anyone who ever listened to rock knows he is one of the top handful off bass players ever.
You couldn't have picked a better version of the song. Great job. I love being able to watch the songs that I've heard a hundred times my entire life.finally somebody I can listen to music with, with an open mind and appreciate it for what it is. It seems like all my friends are just close-minded and only want to listen to what the radio puts out and forces you to listen to every day over and over and over. Once again great job!
For decades I never really listened to past the intro and thought John's bassline was boring then one day I had headphones on and listened through. Good god that man was funky. He knew how to keep it rooted though so well.
Jamal, don't sleep on the Who, "The Real Me" is a M U S T 🔥🔥🔥 Its all about the bass player, Mr. John Entwhistle (RIP), he just GETS OFF during the entire performance...and then some!
I am SO happy you reacted to THIS version. It's by far the best version because this version you can REALLLLLY hear the bass player, Mr Thunder fingers himself, John Entwistle. Great reaction vid! Subbed!
The intro with Pete playing that incredible solo is spankin'. The Who's greatest live performance. Jam Man, I'm so glad you chose the live version from '82. Thanx.
First farewell concert of The Who. Many of my friends were at this show. It was simulcast on TV. I didn't want to sleep out for tickets months earlier, so I just watched it at home on TV.
Ekaterina McGuire Every time you see PT performing this song, everyone there, the band, audience, everyone is just having the time of their life. And they should, it’s a great song.
Been waitin a long time for this one! Also they are from England. You want Canadian artists that tear it up check out The New Pornographers. Mass Romantic, The Bleeding Hearts Show, The Electric Version, The End of Medicine, and Testament to Youth In Verse are all excellent songs by them.
Uh-oh. The Who. Jamel, you've just opened up another door to a place you must explore. The Who. Where to begin?? This is a must listen to group in your spectrum of legendary music. Remember Cream? Well, you got yet another group.
BTW he has listened to at least two of their songs before this. In fairness those two songs had Daltrey on the lead vocals which does change the flavor of The Who IMO
Love that you listened to more than just the music, fantastic as it is/was, you get the message because you listen for the meaning and the purpose for writing it in the first place. Great to see that people still value the messages. Way to go

Alex Gentry .. they are one of Rocks Greatest Bands! Still performing today!!
Rockers rule, mods are mamas boys!!
@@tysonkonken6184 at least they had a sense of fashion
They were not Mods but, were adopted by the mods. ua-cam.com/video/M_PigJUhdiI/v-deo.html
So cool! My brother went to that concert and the next day I was flying out to London and most of the band was at the check-in desk on the same flight! I got Pete Townshend and Kenney Jones autograph on my airline ticket!
The Who was my favorite band when I was a teen! British band started in the 60s. I saw them live in 82 in Detroit. Unforgettable!
The Who. British. Formed 1964. Legends!!!! Thank you. Peace out.
1964 when Moonie joined, but The Detours and High Numbers started in 1960. Their first drummer was Doug Sandham.
This is the one I told you a long story about a while back! Excellent memories of this evening! Big grand party and MEGA-LOUD music!
No, The Who are pure Brit, were The Beatles and Stones main competition. Maximum R&B!
PS - Jamel, you'll really enjoy Pete Townsend with David Cilmore (Pink Floyd) doing "Give Blood" - also a great tune for the times.
@@michaelloveland1330 pssst you have a typo
i've been waiting for this review since you did Reign O'er Me... awesomeness!
Dude!!! You always find the best versions of these songs!!! I had not heard this live version -which is the best. Unbelievable. Thanks bro.
When looking for Who videos, I would suggest sticking with those that have John Entwistle, the original bassist, and really try to focus in on his playing. He was one of, if not the best bassist around.
I agree. Might as well go all the way - isolated bass (live) ua-cam.com/video/80dsyo2Ox-0/v-deo.html
He was so good he was basically a lead.
Keith Moon as well, although I do like this song.
Maybe, but I'll go with Roger Glover.
He also has to watch Keith Moon. No drummer looks like him.
John Entwistle. Oh boy... What an underrated bassist that died too soon. Easily one of the top ten bassists of all time!
Ox is so undermixed in this live track it should be a crime.
Entwistle was a lot of things Underrated was not one of them. Anyone who ever listened to rock knows he is one of the top handful off bass players ever.
Well imo, he is THE greatest!
How about a little Traffic: The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys.
Oh yes...so wonderful.
Omg - old school high school !
Anything with Steve Winwood singing is awesome. Traffic, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group, and his solo stuff. ALL of it is fantastic! ❤️
Kaye Whye
“When you see a chance” is wonderful, too, by Steve as a solo performer (IMO, of course).
@@EYE_GOTCHA You are not alone in that opinion. I love everything I've ever heard with Steve Winwood singing. ;-)
Without a doubt their grooviest tune. Love it!
thank you! It has been a fav song for years...and you have all the right comments and I love your show
They killed it live but studio version is a masterpiece...I love how you most times get the message of these songs. Thats actually a rarity.
WHOever requested this, Thank you!
Whomever
Mike King Thanks for the correction.
@@pumpenheimer4570 you're welcome. I like to see correct grammar.
There were a lot of us 😉
The way the bassist violated that bass🔥
Got to do it with I Am The Sea intro. You can find I Am The Sea/The Real Me as one video on UA-cam.
It’d be a lot, but an entire Quadrophenia reaction with lyrics would be amazing. It’s an album you have to experience as a whole
At long last. I love this song ❤️
Pete Townshend is a beast.
THE MIGHTY WHO!
I am SO happy you reacted to THIS version. It's by far the best version because this version you can REALLLLLY hear the bass player, Mr Thunder fingers himself, John Entwistle.
Great reaction vid! Subbed!
My absolute favorite song by them! Great live as well!
🇬🇧 The WHO are BRITISH, Mel! 😄
The oo
oh man, good choice. great reaction, another bright spot on a long isolation day. I'm grateful for you, man.
The Police’s King of Pain, then Weird Al’s King of Suede. I’ll comment as many times as it takes..
I second that 😁😁 please do these back to back 🏌️♂️
I whole heartily agree with the above.. and with that Im hunting YT for the king of suede
Good idea! In fact, any song followed by the Weird Al version would be fun to see reactions for!
What a great reaction video. Love it. You really captured the essence of the music and the lyrics.
The intro with Pete playing that incredible solo is spankin'. The Who's greatest live performance. Jam Man, I'm so glad you chose the live version from '82. Thanx.
Always preferred Pete’s vocals, another fave is “slit skirts”
Yes! That album was good!
"Slit Skirts" is arguably Pete's best solo song!!
Slit Skirts would be awesome but react to the video from the Prince’s Trust where Phil Collins is playing the drums
Sally Van De Voorde
I forgot all about Slit Skirts... I love that song!!!
ua-cam.com/video/2y_P25YEUBE/v-deo.html
You chose well sir. To me this is definitely the best version of the song.
Listen to that bass,he'll yeah.
First farewell concert of The Who. Many of my friends were at this show. It was simulcast on TV. I didn't want to sleep out for tickets months earlier, so I just watched it at home on TV.
+Thank you for being this out, real classic rock.
when Pete Townshend went solo, he put out a great song in the 1980s, "Face the Face" - could you react to it?
Yes, that’s a great album!
The single 'Give Blood', with David Gilmour on guitar, off of that album is awesome!
The "White City" album is loosely the sequel to Quadrophenia
Give Blood live with David gilmour and Simon Phillips
Ekaterina McGuire Every time you see PT performing this song, everyone there, the band, audience, everyone is just having the time of their life. And they should, it’s a great song.
Been waitin a long time for this one! Also they are from England. You want Canadian artists that tear it up check out The New Pornographers. Mass Romantic, The Bleeding Hearts Show, The Electric Version, The End of Medicine, and Testament to Youth In Verse are all excellent songs by them.
Yes and Pete Townshend it's not a very nice guy
Those bands might be a little overly hip for what we’re doing here. No disrespect.
@@TheOttercreek It's all about having an open mind my friend.
Mort Mort Mort that’s true
Uh-oh. The Who. Jamel, you've just opened up another door to a place you must explore. The Who. Where to begin?? This is a must listen to group in your spectrum of legendary music. Remember Cream? Well, you got yet another group.
Lewis Tasso, There you go! Good call.
Way to go
Pete was from a musical family.Mother was a singer, and dad was a sax player or something in a band himself.,according to Behind Blue Eyes,an autobiography of his time in the Who and solo, among other events in his life at the time.
The Who are British - part of the original British Invasion, along with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Lets not forget The Kinks!
Neal Stidham Please don’t leave out Pink Floyd.
The Who is one of the best! Legends! I was a Junior in HS when this came out! ❤️
kkslakelife same here and I was so lucky to see The WHO perform this live during that "82" tour!! - " The shares crash and hopes are dashed" is so relevant in "2020"
, the “WHO”are from Britain 🇬🇧 Jamal thanks for all the great tunes god bless be well be safe
I was at this show in Toronto in 82. Thanks for playing it. This was The Who's first 'final tour'😁
You are cracking me up , it's so great to see a younger person checkout the music I grew up with and to see you enjoy it is fantastic ! 👍 your reaction's are priceless , thank's for checking out this old stuff . Oh when you were 2 yr's old I saw them live Tampa Stadium Fl .
Now see this is an example of live sounding as good as the studio version
This is old Who! Need to see them with Keith in the late 60s early 70s to see what this band is really about!
More to check out from The Who: Long Live Rock, Bargain, Behind Blue Eyes, and Join Together. Also, they are British.
He reacted to behind blue eyes
@@WanderingWriter Somehow I missed it. Thanks.
Bargain is a must.
Bargain! Do it!
Bargain all the way!!!
I love the insights you have in these classics. Half of which I never even thought about. Great work brother.
For old folks this was one of the best MTV videos of its time, They did it pre -concert like a sound check, Brilliant
