I Like Onza Tires! But i get for free the Maxxis Recon Race for Rear and Ardent on the Front. Amazing Cornering and Speed. But i also like my Onza Purcopine.
man you guys really turned Jared out. he was so clean cut looking in those old vids. looks like he went from Connecticut country club to Cali B adult film actor
Maxxis Dissector 2.4" for the win! I've tried a Maxxis DHF 2.5", DHR II 2.4", Forekaster 2.35", Rekon 2.4" & WTB Vigilante 2.3" on the front of my trail bike. The Dissector is almost as fast rolling as anything I've tried with just enough grip to keep the front in check.
I just put the Continental Kryptotal Front & Rear on this week and I LOVE them. Sort of comparable to an Assegai/DHR setup I think..... Especially the front tyre which is very similar to the Assegai. Running Enduro Soft on both. I would love the lighter weight and more supple feel of the Trail casing, but where I ride I just don't want to deal with any potential tyre damage and these feel plenty burly and reliable. I would probably prefer the Super Soft too, but I ride a ton and want them to last. So far I don't feel like I'm lacking grip! The tubeless setup was also the easiest I've ever done. The tyre are such a tight fit and they just seat like a dream. Would love to hear what you guys think of them because so far I am one happy customer.
When I was a little kid (and even now🤣) my family would go to Costco or Sam's club and I would cry to go to the tire section to get a whiff of the new tires🤣🤣. BEST INTRO EVERR!!
love the maxxis lineup but once owned a bike which came with specialized tires so I decided to give them a shot. I gotta say they're not bad what so ever, but they chirp and are a lot more audible when they're at the edge of their limits. Some people might not like that but it allowed me to use my ears to determine how much harder I could push them which was a totally new and fantastic experience. I'd definitely recommend them for newer riders
Specialized tires are severely underrated, they have so much customization and they are so durable. I don't know anybody who has had any major issues with them, but I know plenty with maxis issues.
Have been running the Maxxis Assegai 2.5" wide EXO tire on the front of my Levo SL for a year now; but, recently switched to the Maxxis DHF 2.5" EXO because it initiates turns better on loose over hard pack in the Sierra Nevada Mountains around Reno, NV. Use a Maxxis DHR-II 2.4" EXO+ as my rear tire. Have to give a thumbs up to the Specialized Butcher after they reformulated their rubber to T9 spec...Good tire!
Both my boys are racing Enduro and they absolutely LOVE the Delium tires they are running on from & back. They are running the 29 & 27.5 Rugged reinforced. Say this is the best tire they have ridden. Grips better and sheds mud like no ones business. Ride mostly Southeast US some Northeast Arkansas & Colorado.
Maxis for loose over hardpack, of course. Magic Mary for loam and mud, of course. Big Betty rear in combination with Magic Mary front for enhanced loam and mud. Oh yeah!
I'm running a Mazza right now! Also, I just put a T9 Specialized Butcher on my brother's bike and so far I'm really impressed. I'm personally not a gigantic fan of maxxis cornering knobs but I know I'm in the vast minority here lol Can't wait for the rear tire shakedown.
I run Butcher T9 front and Eliminator T7 back in my trail bike. Amazing traction and rolling resistance for long climbs. Tires work great in Utah environment.
Love the smell of tires. When Costco (price club) first opened up near me in the early 90s, they had many stacks of car tires in the center of the store. I'd just stand there sniffing the tires for about an hour while my parents did their shopping. I got lots of looks.
I do not yet have a favorite front tire as I'm still pondering what bike to buy. But I super appreciate the videos you guys put out to help guys like me to make more educated decisions! Thanks guys.
@@mikestivers8302 The Kryptotal looks like a direct Assegai competitor, a head to head comparison would be interesting. Of course the Kryptotal is brand new, it's first major exposure was the PB field test as their control tire.
@@mrvwbug4423 similar at first glance, bu look closer, i have an assegai on GF's bike, the tread pattern is much different (wider spacing and more "square' profile than the Krypt Front iirc conti uses 2 rubber compounds, unlike the 3C. vittoria uses 4, but it's all just trademark nonsense to me. one more to add to the list is the Hutchinson Griffus.. amazing tire, albeit hard to procure in the states.
I put a Kryptotal on the fr and assegai on rear of my Enduro and raced a muddy Enduro at Snowshoe last weekend. I had no experience with either tire (was on magic Mary or DHF prior). That Conti felt AMAZING! the Assegai was fine in the rear but def felt a little more slippy than the conti. only reason I mixed tires was because I already had 2 brand new assegai but really wanted to try a conti but didn't want to blow the budget on 2 of them.
My favourite overall would definitely be the Assegai MaxxGrip DD or DH 27.5x2.5WT, closely followed by the Kryptotal Fr Super Soft DH 27.5x2.4. My favourite for winter (here in the PNW) would be the Magic Mary Ultra Soft SG or SD 27.5x2.4 or 2.6, followed by the Vittoria Mota Enduro casing 27.5x2.6 or 2.8.
WTB Verdict 2.5x29” Light High Grip. The Vigilante is great, the Verdict is much better. Massive confidence-inspiring grip! Pairs perfectly with the Judge rear tire.
Magic Mary F&R for me in So Cal (Laguna to Big Bear), I like the Assegai when I first put it on but it lets go with no warning and its sketchy if you push it to the limit. Very excited for the Specialized Cannibal which seems like a combo of both the minions with angled side knobs like the Magic Mary. The Continental Kryptotals felt more predictable and better in the loose than Assegai/DHR2 but not as good as the Magic Mary and they felt more sluggish climbing especially on pavement.
VEE I am running the VEE Flow Snap 2.6, and that's because it is what came on my Marin. I was skeptical about them at first but one ride on them and I was very impressed. They grip like crazy but if they aren't enough, they have knobbier Snap WCE.
I like SE5 front SE4 rear as an all-round combo. Tried XR4 first but found the casing too soft and flexy for my taste, I am over 100kg though so it might be ok for lighter riders.
I just put a Dissector on the rear and it rolls quick but doesn’t compromise on grip. I’ve got a Minion DHF for the front but still have life in my Continental Trail King. I’m loving that combo for now.
Most american or english speaking people pronounce Schwalbe like "Schwolbi" 😉 In german you pronounce the "a" in Schwalbe like the a in "car" in english and the e like the first e in "sense". Hope, that makes sense to you... ?! 😁 BTW: Schwalbe means swallow (the bird!) in german, thats why the old logo had a bird in it.
I am addicted to testing tires and doing DH repeats at full send, so far after trying most tires the best weight to grip ratio I think is Kenda Hellkat 29x2.4 ATC up front and Conti Kryptotal 2.4 rear endurance casing for precise feeling grip and good wear. For tires that rail hard in all conditions, clear mud, and still pretty light for long days. If shuttling heavier casings for sure. Still need to test Argotal Enduro casing up front. Assagai feels vague to me so it also depends what ground feel builds confidence. Prefer open channel for a hard hook up, intermediaries have hardly any wear so appear pointless.
When I run my hardtail as a 27.5 + , I use a Rekon 2.8 , I did once try a Minion DHF 2.8 and it was great on the descents but like an anchor any other time! The Rekon is a great balance between grip and rolling speed . If I switch to the 29 wheelset always a DHF 2.5. In dry dusty and rocky Peru these work great. When I go back to England I use a Magic Mary up front as it clears mud great and really digs in well. Also grips well on wet roots.
Does the 2.8 width help with the cornering on the Rekon? I demoed a RM Element that had Rekons at both ends but just in 2.4 and it was scary trying to corner on, basically XC tire corner knobs.
I'm currently running a Specialized Eliminator up front. Purgatory out back. Loving this combo. But I can agree that the Assagai is the stickiest tire ever.
Wasn't brought up but I'm running the E-Thirteen grappler and for my local dusty and rocky trails and man it is so grippy and I'd even say it is comparable with the assagei
got rid of the specialized tires on my Levo and put assegai front and rear. it's a new bike! lots of grip and gives more confidence to push the limits.
I tried a Rekon on the front but it washed out too often so I went back to a DHF with more success. But currently I have Pirelli Scorpion Trail M 2.4 front and rear and they work really well!
Well since this comment I've bought a new bike and I had a WTB Vigilante Light/Grip F and Trail Boss Tough/Fast rear. I'm now looking at new tyres, I'm really keen to try the Kryptotal/Xynotal or Scorpion Enduro M + R
Tangentially related to the video and Continental [gravel] tires... My girlfriend trained [on the course] and raced unbound on Continental Terra Speeds... about 450mi of time in the Flint Hills. This race is notoriously hard on tires and she didn't experience a single flat, while in the same time I received three flats on my Specialized Pathfinder Pros. As a matter of fact, I can't find _anyone_ who ran Terra Speeds that got a flat (Obviously selection bias applies here, buy hey). While this video is about mountain bike tires, not gravel, the incredible durability of the Terra Speeds makes me want to try their MTB offerings.
My trail bike (Ibis Ripley) DHR II My hardtail cross country bike (Ibis Tranny) Nobby Nic. My 20 pound “All Business” rigid single speed (Niner One9) WTB Nano.
Jeff's hair is looking incredible as always. I know it's been years since I last asked and probably won't happen but is the old intro ever making a comeback?
you pronounce it "shvalbe". you guys couldve really said to every tire which terrain is the most fitting. i found it a bit difficult learning more from this vid
DHR II EXO+ (F), trying a Dissector EXO+ (R) both 2.4WT. Central Texas limestone riding mostly. Would appreciate you asking staff again this year, and if a Maxxis tire what would they ride if Maxxis wasn't available. Really interested in Conti and Vittoria lineups.
I've been running aggressor front and rear lately. I started with it on the rear and tried it on the front on a whim as well and it's working pretty good. Rolls faster than a dissector and only gives up a little grip. Most of our trails are hardpack/loose over hard down and then road climbs back up, so having something with decent road life is useful and the aggressor is the fastest rolling non xc tire i've found. If it gets wet, though, forget about it. You're gonna end up on your face first berm.
Living in Michigan. I run Nobby Nic Snakeskins (old generation) on front and rear for my Ripmo and Ripley. They work great on the flow trails. I've tried the Assegai, Minion, Rekon, and Ardents and find them unnecessarily heavy, soft, and slow for the dirt-based trails here. While the Assegai can rip corners amazingly well, I can't really utilize all that traction while knifing through trees. The Nobby Nics have a better balance of traction and acceleration. The Dissector sounds interesting ....
On a whim bought some Versus All Mtn trail casing tires. At first I found them pretty harsh and "bouncy." So I tried running them at pretty low pressures -- 18 front, 24 back and they are very nice on rocky, hard pack, terrain and have nice feedback. Terrible, I mean terrible in wet.
My current front tyres on 2 bikes are Vittoria Martello and Michelin Wild AM. Rear are the Vittoria Agarro and Michelin Force AM. A set on standby are the Pirelli R and S in Enduro casing. Trying out different brands as i've used Maxxis and Schwalbe previously.
I'm 70 and have, for years, timed my climbs to determine the fastest rolling tires. "Feel" isn't as reliable as the stopwatch. I'm in Park City, Utah (what's this "mud" of which you speak?) and the fastest roller for me is the previous gen Nobby Nic F/R in 29". Next is Conti Trail King, Mountain King F/R and up until 3 or 4 years ago, I wouldn't have owned a Continental. My 60 y.o. wife at the time could tear those up in one ride. They solved that problem. But, those combo's were too restrictive on loose downhills so I'm now on the Assegai F/ Dissector R. That combo isn't that slow, really, on the climb, and it makes the downs really fun in the loose conditions we sometimes get. Given my brittle bones, the braking force you can put on the Assegai is a life and limb saver.
For riders in So Cal with our hard pack with loose baseball size rocks and bigger all the ruts. Are trails chew up tires and some brands are not the best. I remember when the Kenda Nevagal was seen on ever new bike. Now it’s the Maxxis that comes one ever new bike.
Really depends on the terrain. The 'Assguy' seems to be the go to tyre/tire in drier, hard packed conditions with the Magic Mary shining on the softer trails, in the UK anyway. I have a 2.6 Butcher that was amazing in the crazy summer we had and switched to a 2.4 Magic Mary in as we move into the wet season, will see how it does, may be too thin. All these tires/tyres seem to be great options though!
All the way up here in New Hampshire, riding old school, rocky and rooty rake'n'ride trails and I'm running a Forekaster 2.6 MaxxSpeed. It's been really dry this summer to the point that I think we achieved 'loose over hard' a couple of times and the FK wasn't as confidence inspiring as it normally is. My son rides a DHR II which he loves most of the time, but he felt like he was running out of grip at a very dry Killington a couple of weeks ago and said he would have liked an Assegai.
Assegai, it just works on everything. Pairs wonderfully with a Dissector out back. Just curious, have you guys been able to try out the new Forekaster yet? It looks like it work great for a downcountry/light trail setup, maybe at both ends or with a Dissector up front. Watched a guy at the bike park run them on an Ibis Ripley and he was absolutely shredding on them.
I bought it and didn’t like the new Forekaster as a front tire on my Ripley, but would probably make a good rear tire. While I like the tread pattern fine, it’s narrow for a “2.4” and not very light for its category and actual width. I had high hopes and was disappointed.
I try the Pirelli Scorpion S for the upcoming season. Knobs are very beefy and the sidewall is very sturdy too. On the back there is the Scorpion R which is a fester rolling thread pattern. Lets see... The fairly new Magic Mary Ultrasoft in the Super Trail carcasse is probably my favorite so far. Light enough and a lot of grip in almost every condition!
Latest impressions: Vee Tire DH casing Attack HPL 2.5 are almost “too sticky”. Had to put a front fender on because it kept launching stones and sand into my mouth! 😖 Amazing damping, but very slow rolling. Specialized T9 Butcher trail casing 2.5 is a great balance of grip to rolling resistance. Works on both my downcountry and EMTB. Might try the Cannibal next. 😎👍
I live in Humboldt county with a mix of loam and clay. I use Maxxis Shorty's 2.4 front and rear, those tires carve trenches with the best grip I've experienced so far. Also, I can't tell if Jeff looks more like Kramer or Ellen DeGeneres???
I'm running Teravail Kessal/Honcho combo on my turbo levo, minion DHF/DHR on my enduro bike, and Magic Mary/Big betty get tossed on there as well. The Teravails might be my favorite. The Maxxis tires go flat nearly daily and tend to leak out of the sidewalls. I don't have that issue with any other tires I run. Oh and my Levo originally came with a Butcher T9 and Elminator T7 and to be honest, I like that combo better than the Minions. The butcher just wore out fast is the only reason I don't have them on now, but it is a soft compound.
Running on the very light side of trail riding with a honcho up front and ehline in the rear. Hope they develop even more tires in time. I'm done with maxxis after riding these.
I'm also running the Kessel up front, Honcho in the rear. I prefer a fast rear tire that I can break loose when I want. Love this combo. And yeah, if it wasn't for Maxxis' marketing, sponsors, and being factory spec'd on bikes, people wouldn't be such fan boys I think.
I've got the Specialized turbo levo comp carbon 3rd gen ; living around the Yorkshire Dales National park " UK I'm going to ride this ; Autumn & winter a T9 Hill billy gravity upfront. 👍
What front tire are you running on your MTB?
im a huge maxxis guy until i tried the new continental tires lineup! kryptotal FR, Kryptotal Re and Xynotal! jeezus those tires hook up

It would be awesome if Greg Minnaar designs another tire and calls it the Maxxis Boobgai.
It would have to be spelled 'Bubegai'...
Maxxis Breastagai

"Oh, Assegai up front and Boobgai on the back"
"Wrong order"
"shit"
Let's pump this up...also make the rear tyre LANA

Maxxis Dissector 2.4" for the win!
I've tried a Maxxis DHF 2.5", DHR II 2.4", Forekaster 2.35", Rekon 2.4" & WTB Vigilante 2.3" on the front of my trail bike. The Dissector is almost as fast rolling as anything I've tried with just enough grip to keep the front in check.
The pure grip and confidence Assegai gives on corners makes it amazing.
Almost as good as Magic Mary ;)
@@th_js Magic Mary would be comparable to DHS not assegai so the grip is bad in the same way as DHS. So no.
@@Raumance Have you tried Ultrasoft?
@@th_js It's the pattern not the rubber. Wow softer rubber grips who would've ever guessed that...
@@Raumance Who hurt you? Magic Mary works better for me. Assegai works better for you. No arguing required.

As a matter of fact, I can't find _anyone_ who ran Terra Speeds that got a flat (Obviously selection bias applies here, buy hey). While this video is about mountain bike tires, not gravel, the incredible durability of the Terra Speeds makes me want to try their MTB offerings.
There is nothing like that new tire smell🤣👍
My trail bike (Ibis Ripley) DHR II
My hardtail cross country bike (Ibis Tranny) Nobby Nic.
My 20 pound “All Business” rigid single speed (Niner One9) WTB Nano.
Jeff's hair is looking incredible as always. I know it's been years since I last asked and probably won't happen but is the old intro ever making a comeback?
The Magic Mary (off-road tire) has some serious street cred 😆
I still crack up whenever I see that dropper seatpost microphone!
you pronounce it "shvalbe". you guys couldve really said to every tire which terrain is the most fitting. i found it a bit difficult learning more from this vid
What about in the mud is the aggressor still it?
I run Maxxis Rekon but in all fairness, I am relatively new to the game and tgese came on my bike. No problems.
Finding the Pirelli Scorpion Enduro Soft Terrain is one of my favourite for the conditions I ride in.
Your working environment looks so fun! Would love to work there
It sure is 😁🍻
All the way up here in New Hampshire, riding old school, rocky and rooty rake'n'ride trails and I'm running a Forekaster 2.6 MaxxSpeed.
Great video! Dhr front dissector back, both 2.4 here
Assegai, it just works on everything.
This would be nice to know. And how it compares to the Rekon and Aggressor on the rear with the Dissector on front.
I bought it and didn’t like the new Forekaster as a front tire on my Ripley, but would probably make a good rear tire. While I like the tread pattern fine, it’s narrow for a “2.4” and not very light for its category and actual width. I had high hopes and was disappointed.
You guys crack me off 🤙🏼...my fav front is DHF 29x2.5 and the rear AGGRESSOR 29x2.3
Hello.
I live in Spain in the North (Asturias) it is a humid area and I wear the Wtb Veridict tire all year round and I am very happy.
Greetings.
As I am in UK, Magic Mary is my way to go. I’ll try Michelin DH 34 soon as well.
I run a Vittoria Agarro in the front and Vittoria Barzo in the rear.
Hutchinson Griffus 2.5. Time to try other brand boys. Lots of fantastic tires way more affordable then Max-ass and Schawby
Yes! Not many Hutcheys around here where I am in Tennessee but they are hands down the best I’ve ever ridden
Magic Mary super trail is a killer tyre
LOL!!!! Since I can even remember, I have loved
the smell of tires, it is almost euphoric!!😍😍😍😍😍😍
Im running Conti Kryptotal, rear. Phenomenal tire for trails. Front Nobby Nick. Like my setup
Bontrager XR3 front and rear. Perfect XC combo for speed and cornering grip
SoCal rider. Have Kenda's on all 4 bikes: Nevagals in DH casing, and non-DH, and Honey Badgers.
Maxxis DHF 2.6 front, Rekon 2.6 rear. These tires have way more capability than I do.
2.5 Assegai x 2.4 Dissector. Best combo I've found 🤟
front DHR II2.6 x 29..Dissector 2.6 x 27.5 on my LEVO 22..next assigai on the front next round based on this video..great work gang
Running Kenda Hellkat on the front and back on the ebike. This thing grips like crazy. Little bit slow rolling.. On Assegai/Dissector on the bio bike.
Guess I'm "old school" as I'm using a High Roller 2 on the front of my trail bike. 29 x 2.5WT- it makes it in Massachusetts!
2.5 WTB Vigilante. It just claws it’s way through the trails.
I've been running the DHR II and have been loving it. I haven't tried the Assegai yet but that will probably be my next purchase
I shouldn't mention these tires because they are hard to find, but the IRC Tanken 27.5 x 2.6"
I live in Humboldt county with a mix of loam and clay. I use Maxxis Shorty's 2.4 front and rear, those tires carve trenches with the best grip I've experienced so far.
Also, I can't tell if Jeff looks more like Kramer or Ellen DeGeneres???
Assegai 2.5 Maxxgrip . So freaking good
I'm running Teravail Kessal/Honcho combo on my turbo levo, minion DHF/DHR on my enduro bike, and Magic Mary/Big betty get tossed on there as well.
