DEREK ROY WATKINS - 2 MARCH 1945 - 22 MARCH 2013
"A trumpet spreading a wondrous sound
Throughout the graves of all lands.
Will drive mankind before the Throne
Death and Nature shall be astonished"
It is with such sorrow that I have to tell you that my beloved husband died at 19.50 on 22 March. He was surrounded by his family telling him how much we loved him. His two year battle against cancer is over, he is at peace but we shall miss him so very much. His courage and strength over the past years have been an inspiration to everyone he met, and his music will live on for his future generations.

Just discovered Derek about a month ago and tbh he is probably my all time favorite trumpet player now. His sound has so much passion and energy in all registers, it's incredible.

Any band that includes musicians of the calibre of Findlay and Watkin has to be reckoned with. Truth is that all Last's musicians were out of the top drawer, as were his arrangements. A great band in all respects.

Due "Big" della tromba, di quelle raffinate ed eleganti che suscitano, in chi li ascolta, quel naturale ed universale sentimento dell'anima che si chiama "emozione".
I miei complimenti ai due artisti, a pari merito, e soprattutto al "Gran Maestro James Last", un altro Big di Statura Internazionale, che ha saputo organizzare, con consumata esperienza, questo evento davvero eccezionale.

Unieke opnamen in de Royal Albert Hall van twee trompetgiganten, wij Hollanders (lees: bugelmaten uit Amersfoort) waren daarbij, het was een ongeloofelijke avond. Ademloos hebben wij naar deze solisten geluisterd. Nu dan eindelijk op You Tube en vastgelegd voor de rest van de wereld. De beelden staan in ons geheugen gegrift en zullen wij de rest van ons leven bij ons dragen. Kortom: een grandioze ervaring in Londen.

James Last, had a talent, that no one else shares (that I see). He could see the music, and compose it, tweak it, etc. Add more instruments, and see the final results before it was produced, and wrap a whole new twist around it. All too often we see it as elevator music, without realizing the genius. It's just background, and pleasing music. We never think that someone had a vision, before they collected the talent to realize it.

Habe gar nicht gewußt dass Derek Watkins UND Chuck Findley eine zeitlang gleichzeitig bie James Last gespielt haben..Dachte immer Chuck Findley wäre der NACHFOLGER von Derek Watkins gewesen...wer spielte denn dann in dieser Zeit die LeadTrompete...???
Das kann nur als Ausnahme so gewesen sein. Eigentlich ist er ungefähr zeitgleich mit Bob Lanese ausgestiegen. Für Bob Lanese kam dann Jan Oosthoff.
