kipkay hey man I love your videos been with you since '09 keep doing what your doing for your next vid you should do a project with grant Thompson the king of random
kipkay my tip is before you go to the circuit board put a little bit of soder on the the tip and then you don t gotta heat it to long and risk to damage a part
Back in the 90's I worked for an electronics company and we used PCB Holders. Makes it so much easier to solder components, onto a circuit board. I would recommend one if you solder components on a PCB on a regular basis. Amazon sells a bunch of them.
I really love these videos lately on how to do things that people think are harder than they are. I was trying to do a fun DIY project with my friend a while back and she was terrified to use the soldering iron. I showed her your last how to solder video and she realized that it really isn't a big deal and is a useful skill to learn. Thank you! :)
Great video, Kipkay! I hope you show some more soldering videos, like ones with tips to remove the IC before soldering, how to use helping hands, which parts to be most careful about not overheating.
I really enjoyed this instructional video. I never got into the maker thing until later in life. Now, I have a lot of skills to build, as well as tools to buy.
Fixed mine. Check underneath the display circuit board for a short. Disconnect the battery and clean in between the pins with a knife (gently) so they are no longer in contact.
One thing that everyone doing soldering also should pay attention to is the temperature tolerance of the component. Some components could be destroyed if you use to much time soldering it. The datasheet for the component would indicate this if it is an issue. One of the most common errors beginners do when soldering is to use too high temperature on their iron or use too much time fiddling about and end up with a perfectly soldered destroyed component.
Another thing to take note is the quality of the board itself. If it's cheaply made, when you try to apply his technique of heating the board first and then letting the solder flow, the copper pad will fall right out
I havent soldered in quite a minute, and when I did I would hold the solder to the tip of the iron and just wait for it to melt then transfer lol, I was bad at that
Really love the new videos , and love gizmo and gags. I've been watching your videos since the cheap burning laser lighter video, thanks kipkay on how to diy stuff.
2:32 maybe useful to remove the chip from its holder... And useful to speak about the soldering time/duration. In my head the red lamp started to flash sometimes as I see your video, but OK, useful and thanks for sharing! :)
I been at least 5 years trying to do this it never ever works like this for me. Always sticks to the tip never sticks where you want it. The hardest thing just about ever and the guides never really show you how it dont work most of the time. Never seen anyone able to work it like this
Hi And thank you for this video! I do have a question. If leg lengths are broken short of the other side of the board. Will the solder be able to be affectively connect to the end board?
Fine pitch and/or 'don't-sneeze-or-they're-spread across-the-room-never-to-beseen-again-size' components 'SMD soldering must be brain surgery to the power of rocket science :-)
It's been ages since I soldered anything, and even back then I barely knew what I was doing. Is a clip-on heat sink still necessary when soldering components like ICs?
how to clean a inverter PCB chip that was damaged from a Lead-Acid battery leakage, very few corrosions seems to have happened? help me out please what equipment and spirit shall i use please?
I got really good at soldering and then my industry/job went away from soldering and used heatshrink, as well as crush joiners and heatshrink with solder in them and now I'm pretty average again.
Anonymous User just because you don't own one doesn't mean you can't benefit from one. There are makerspaces all over the place, plus you can order almost anything from 3D hubs... I personally own one and it is the most useful and cool tool I've ever bought. The possibilities are endless! I think of stuff everyday to print out !
LinusScrubTips The only I saw that was really terrible was how he bridged those 2 through holes. You're supposed use a solid piece of conductor between the holes. I usually chop off the end of a resistor or led lead. (I am IPC-610 and 620 certified so I am one of the few commenters who can actually be authoritative is some regard here)
LinusScrubTips everything. The untinned tip. The way he solders has a potential bridging. It's really amateurish. He just forces the solder onto the contact and ends up with a big glub of solder

this video took 6 years for me to find it while working out and being reminded to keep my tip clean.
Thx for the reminder Kip! 💖💖

I am really happy you're releasing these videos.
All these years I still find myself looking something up and being happy to see you covered it. Thanks for all you do brother.
Remember guys, keep your tip clean. 😉
Thanks for the Tip
😂😂
Awesome knowledge
It's mine, I'll clean it as fast as I want too!!!! 😉
mine has poop on it 🙁
Thanks for the video! I just needed to solder a circuit board today, and then you came on and taught me how to do it right!

Chris Vandergriff Awesome! It's a lot of fun, right?
kipkay oh hell no you replied!
The soldering iron tip needs to be "tinned" much better for maximum heat transfer. Pick up a block of Sal Ammoniac.
I watched the video, smoked a blunt and got to work. flawless teensy 4.0 pin soldering in a minute!
thanks bro!
"Don't forget to keep your tip clean" - advice for life
ŞniperZ Gaming I'm thinking it's a tip that only men have. Or maybe I've got a dirty mind.
comik300 that's what she said
@@WayneClark Im athiest lol
Man I remember learning how to solder back in vocational school for my computer class, I love soldering!!!
Now i will buy soldering kits becuse you inspired and showed how fun and interesting that is!
Then you might want to check out Julian Illett, who's done some kit soldering
I think he should call them "KipTips"...
Kip's Tips

I was looking for somebody pointing out the IC was still in the socket.
Just a little tip, when you clean everything, don't use steel wool, because little bits can fall and make your board short circuit.
love the new tips series
@kipkay Is it bad if the board around the through holes starts to melt away because of the heat? Or is it completely fine?
Adam Korb There should never be that much heat to melt the Board. My soldering station has adjustable temperature.
Adam Korb oh hell no solder melting point is about 200 °C and the silver dots are prob about 500 °C
More videos like this please! :)
Thank you so much for these tips videos.
The RadioShack solder brought back memories.. God what I'd do to have RadioShack back 😭😭

This Is Private Property bruh since 2008
Yeah im a really old fan of him i miss lazer vids
Nice tutorial.
do you use any esd protection when soldering pwb's?
Would recommend a smaller diameter of solder with smaller through holes that the blue PCB has?
JACK HQ I wouldnt, just use a similer diameter that he used, and just touch the solder to the iron to get less solder.
short on point. you have my like
kipkay what do u use to clean the tip?
don't use steel, use something softer like copper or brass, steel wool will scratch the protective coating on your tip allowing the tip to erode away
Jan van der Vloet Ya I only use steel wool to refinish a beat up tip. I use a sponge for normal use.
Can you make a video on how to de-solder parts with multiple pins ?
Grayson Warman I have that planned. Thanks!
+kipkay cool video. Just wondering how would I get the stuff to make my own circuit boards?
DJ VIN Lom You can buy blank PCB's. Trying to make one is far too complicated.
Don't forget to keep your tip clean 😏
xD
Rex Galilae Exactly!

Thats a very useful video. A quick question, for soldering ICs on to a board, how much temeprature setting do you recommend?
When in doubt, use sahder.
Hi And thank you for this video! I do have a question. If leg lengths are broken short of the other side of the board. Will the solder be able to be affectively connect to the end board?
What field is this called if I were to study this more in depth in college?
what stores have Most of these electronic kits and stuff and solder? i’m a beginner on this…

@kipkay how do i unsolder two prongs on a circuit board? Is there a technique to take out multiple prong at the same time or one by one?

What kind of solder and is there any flux involved? Also what size solder wire and so on?
In the tutorial he was using rosin core solder, which has the flux in the middle.
very helpful thank you very much
great video would you make one on how to make a car amplifier or even one on repairing one would be very helpful
how to clean a inverter PCB chip that was damaged from a Lead-Acid battery leakage, very few corrosions seems to have happened? help me out please what equipment and spirit shall i use please?
How do I take off a connector with multiple points of solder?
I believe soldering wick
nice video, where are the laser series man

Wilber Castaneda Thanks for enjoying it!
I got really good at soldering and then my industry/job went away from soldering and used heatshrink, as well as crush joiners and heatshrink with solder in them and now I'm pretty average again.
What size solder is recommended?
Kipkay When are you going to get a 3D printer??? looks like your projects would benefit from one for sure...
I think he won't since most of us don't have 3D printers so he doesn't want us to be at disadvantage.
Anonymous User just because you don't own one doesn't mean you can't benefit from one. There are makerspaces all over the place, plus you can order almost anything from 3D hubs... I suppose you could always use a 3D printing service
i use the leg of caps and resistors to make a easy solder bridge
2:25 That's what she said
Which one do you think is better, copper, brass or regular steel scraping sponge thingy ?
Have a nice day =)
flo ri Brass or copper. I have one of those brass cleaning sponges to clean iron tips.
Thanks for the advice !
It would be a great video if you stated the temperature to set solder gun so that it does burn board
Hi Kipkay!
Xx808OverdriveXx 5240 Hey!
kipkay 😀
Eutectic solder is very important.
I suck at soldering electronics, but I can sweat copper pipe joints real good.
What is the correct temperature of soldering iron in centigrade?
315-375 depends on what you soldering though
Oh not another one bridging with solder. Don't do it. It's messy and leads to inadvertent short circuits
Spent damn near 5 hours soldering the abs vsa modulator for my car and bridged two contacts for the yaw rate sensor together smh
what's a cleaner method to connect? using wire?
@@cameronbenzing613 YES. Every board I've worked on that needed jumpers just used wire between the two.
@@cgilleybsw Thank you. Correct practice as a beginner is useful.
Hey where can I find pins with a power and mic and volume botton all in one could give me link people might have

Solder won’t stick in through hole for me. Just goes on the iron. Any help?
probably you're not holding the iron on the board long enough. The board needs to be really hot to get it to stick
You didn't flux the joint.
Only think I heard was "suh dude" hehe
