Driver Battles Season 2 Ep 1 Mazda Miata vs. Honda Civic Hatch (Ek)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 бер 2019
- The age old debate of which is fastest at the track, a Mazda Miata or a Honda Civic. Front-wheel drive or rear-heel drive? There can only be one winner.
Both cars are fairly similar in the power and weight department, and both are even running the exact same size Nitto NT01s: 225/45R15. Will the Miata's aero be the difference? Or will the B20 engine push the Civic over the top? Find out in this episode of Driver Battles! - Авто та транспорт
as an owner of both a b16 swapped hatch and a Miata I gotta say Miatas the superior chassis, Honda b series the better engine
lucas chayne swap the b into the Miata
exactly. the civic chassis is, in its class, one of the best tho. i also own both. a 94 na miata and a 00 civic hatch b16a2
" swap the b into the Miata " yeeea Oki buddy. 😂😂
SLAM lmaoo anything’s possibleeeee (I know it isn’t very realistic though)
I Am Perplexed idiot
In defense of the Honda, that car looked real good and this is coming from a miata guy on his 3rd miata.
Deleted scene from ‘The Bee Movie’
add headers that have the correct proportions for performance and your car will sound like every other 4 banger the unequal length headers is all that saves the Subaru from sounding the same \
minus the new ones who sound like all other 4 bangers
Civic driver handled the challenges of fwd quite well. I was expecting lots of understeer and early braking but he managed his line quite well with some brake-oversteer. Well done
I have owned both at the same time, & am a fan of both. Both are fun cars, but they have some pretty distinct differences. Since I drove them back to back for years, I feel confident in saying that if your goal is handling, Miata is always the answer.
The Honda guy talked smack several times. The Miata guy never talked smack about the Honda guy. The Miata guy even said he was a Honda fan! Just because of that, I liked to see the Honda guy get beaten.
Even is the Honda was faster, the Miata would probably still be more fun to drive
@@EddoWagt ...because as much as I like Civics, they're still 'wrong-wheel-drive'.
Miata is so fun to drive... Slow!!!
How have not come across this channel.. love the presentation. Subbed!!!!
After comparing the 2 videos, it appears Miata guy was using more of the track than Civic guy.
That's why this is a driver's battle. The driver is a far bigger variable than the car at this level, that's what makes this worth watching.
Civic is FWD. If he gave it too much power in the sweepers it looked like the understeer kicked in and pushed him further out. Another hing I noticed about his car was in centain turns the back end came around slightly like @5:33 underbraking or off throttle. I thought that was kind of cool. I've had 4 '90s Hondas and they were a ton of fun on the street. I'm not sure I've ridden in a well sorted NA, but there were a ton of sensations of those I have road in. I've only driven the girlfriend's ND.
@@jinxtacy
With a good diff, a fwd car can induce oversteer with throttle application.
@@Supercharged111 Looks like it comes around in a braking zone where you have the weight of the car shifted forward. You could be right, but I'm trying to wrap my head around exceeding rear grip through more throttle input. You have any references so that I could understand this concept a bit better?
@@jinxtacy
Unfortunately I'll have to defer you to the google as this was based on personal experience. A friend's EG6 had a Mugen diff and that's where I first experienced it. My factory viscous LSDs would not do this, but the Kaaz 1.5 way I put on my AE92 Corolla sure did. There's just something about locking those wheels that makes the front end go where it's pointed with throttle.
Wait this wasn't even b20vtec??? That's not bad at all.
its a junkyard motor swap ....but as all the haters will be on is that its a swap ,might i also add looks very much street /stock
@@christopherdaniel6142 You can swap a vtec head to make the B20 vtec. A commonly done mod that increases torque.
@@SI0AX it doesnt increase torque it increases top end horsepower the torque is determined by the bottom end
@@lollol-xp4mc Cool, I didn't know that. Wait, what engine is this? What bottom and top engine combined makes a B20? I don't remember.
@@SI0AX you take the b20 block/ bottom end and put a b16/b18 vtec head/top end on it to make a b20 vtec so you get 2.0 bottom end for the torque and you get the high rev top end to make more power up top
The civic didn’t need a vtec head, that driver wasn’t very experienced. Use more track dude. Miata driver outdrove the hell out of you
B Watson yup,,if he was more experienced he deff would of got a hella after time then the Miata..I’ll love to challahs that dam same Miata in my 00 civic si coupe,,,
Rwd is easier, but you are correct. Needs a driver mod
@@calincampbell5637 Yeah with a FWD car, getting the gas and steering right is a total pain and if you get it wrong it's not as noticeable getting a bit of oversteer when you gas too much coming out a corner(RWD) vs a little understeer(FWD).
@@SI0AX There's also torque steer with FWD that affects the steering. When lifting off the gas too much and back on too heavy you can induce oversteer which was likely what was slowing down the Civic. So poor technique is doubly compounded on FWD in specific situations. Rear-wheel-drive vehicles still are affected by torque steer in the sense that specific situations will still apply a steering moment to the car (though from the rear wheels instead of the front). However, the torque-steer effect at the rear wheels will not send any torque response back through the steering column, so the driver will not have to fight the steering wheel.
@@AyoMrB Yeah, it's mostly due to the lack of weight at the rear. There is no differential to add some weight to the rear. So FWD is heavily affected by lift off oversteer which gets even worse when braking so you are have to left foot brake as much as you can to keep some acceleration weight transfer to the rear.
How about a 2018 SI. The Type R's little brother. I got one with a little boost, a big wing, and a large attitude. Would love to share with you guys.
Id like to see that
I'd love to see that up against an ND miata with a turbo kit -- similar to this round, but boosted!
Adam Tillmann
“well, weight transfer should be absolutely minimized on the rear axle for a front engine, front wheel drive car. the rear wing for track applications is usually for high-speed stability. front wheel drive race cars are usually tuned to oversteer (because of the natural tendency of front wheel drive to understeer) which is a bad thing at high speed corners and straights. the wing has little effect at low speed (so it doesn’t load the rear, so the rear tires slip) so the car can turn hard. at high speed the wing is effective and loads the rear of the car, forcing the tires to grip better, so the car understeers and is stable.
Also, a wing shifts the center of drag rearwards, which is another benefit for high speed stability.”

Had a 2010 miata and a stripped 96 integra gsr with the 1.8vtec (b16?) and 1.8vtec is awesome when vtec kicks in. However, steering ratio is slower and it's a bigger car, feels bulkier than a miata. Speed is one thing, the feel and engagement of the miata is on another level.
MIATA'S ALWAYS THE ANSWER 👍
I feel like the miata driver is more experienced.
I’m checking around me like if there’s a bee hive around me
kooldood hilarious actually
Front wheel drive is the clear and obvious choice for performance driving. Just look towards the highest levels of racing to plainly see that it is the best drive train. Formula 1, top fuel drag racing, moto gp, 24 hour endurance racing, and of course the WRC all set the majority of their track records using front wheel drive only vehicles because they are obviously the best choice. For sure, its very scientifical. 😂
😂😂 we could be friends! Well said.
@Noise Control some fwd cars are really impressive. So I agree with you. It's just not the performance standard, which makes it subsidiary in pretty much every category, in my opinion.
Just gotta choose between over steer and under steer. I'd choose over steer.
Front wheel drive can race? I thought i lose hope to my mazda.
@@CarlosMendoza-zd1ss Ok, but when do you want for Oversteer or Understeer? With FWD you got off-throttle and braking oversteer. With RWD, you get on throttle oversteer if you have enough power, otherwise you get understeer, depending the car.
You did MX5s proud! Keep it up.
I own an Na8c miata and an integra they are both fun cars miata does feel better in the corners but that VTEC at 9k is so nice on the straightaways. I can’t ever decide so i keep both. One day i will k swap the Miata so i can have my cake and eat too
Best episode ever.
Correction, V8 Miata is always the answer. During college, I drove a 97 Geo Metro that was the slowest thing in the world. After many years of boring drives, I was able to get my dream car and I now have the loudest and most obnoxious car on my street.
That is, a 99' NB Miata with an LS1 swap, T56, and a Ford 8.8 differential.
I'd love to take it to your show. I am no race car driver but I've done a few autocross days on a 92' Miata and have ended up on the podium once or twice.

IMO of all the Japanese car V8 swaps. The Miata V8 swap is the only acceptable one. BTW, how much did the Miata V8 frames and reinforcement cost? Or how much does that entire setup run?
Little Honda did alright for being more of a "street car" that the Miata. No aero, less HP (though probably not by much 10whp or so). I run against Miata's all the time in AutoX, and no... they're not always the answer, lol.
The only time Miata is not the answer is when drag racing, and even then you can always LS swap the shit out of it. Also when a Lotus is whitin budget.
@@KA-gk4nn Well I compete against a built LS swapped Miata and a built supercharged Elise at Autocross and we're all pretty close. Though all our cars aren't very stock anymore, lol.
Oh SNAP! that 6speed transmission caught me off guard and he drove the crap outta that miata! Beast! Great race! Thing is way faster than my stock miata! He deftly has a tune...
Yea miata is tuned and civic is not tuned.
Miata people are chill. Honda people are cocky sometimes. Thats why i got into miatas. Its about driving not bragging rights
Honda people in Florida be like that
Juan Sierra honda people everywhere be like that
@@harolddebarros9508 Most Miata people are humble beaides the drift miata guys like 240sx
Juan Sierra i met some miata drift people that are actually nice and humble tho. I know a guy with a 5.0 miata. Super sick guy
So you let people decide what car you should get? smh
love my turbo na16 but i also want a civic someday
Fantastic content, guys. Great video. But maybe turn the music down, or even off? Pweez :)
Expected outcome. Miata > Civic on a track.
Heck yeah! As soon as I get out of spin class I'm gonna take my Miata for a drive!
He would have easily won with Vtec. That was a very good battle 👍🏾. I have a 95 civic 2dr with B18C5 swap it would be fun to go on the show.
Nice job representing us Miata bois 😂🙌
im sure you can find drivers to do full blown touge style cat n mouse BATTLE!!!!
wow that was close. how much do these cars weigh? i wonder if you swapped drivers and cars, what would the time be.
lol what is that lil boxing glove looking thing on the front left part of the front bumper on the miata..? something covering the tow hook?
Wait do you think you would do a beginner driver episode?
I'd come out with my 86 FC Rx7 freshly rebuilt street port NA motor, cheap coilovers Avid Av20 17x9 stock NA trans stock LSD
No driver mod 😅
Westminster, CO
Where you guys make this I would love to be in it
Does everyone have to run nitto nt01 ??
Good match up.
I might get smack for this but I got a old 93 Geo prizm with 4AGE 20V silvertop swap with 5 speed lsd running on blended e85 and 93 pump mix, the car is gutted and have coilovers on all corners with federal 959 195/50/15r I would love to give that a run.
Thats actually a pretty rad setup,id love to see that run!!!
Sounds epic. Toyota ftw
A bit sacrilegious but no where near compared to desecrating the holy rotary with a V8 swap.
Do you have videos of your Prizm? I'd love to see it, sounds amazing on paper.
I have both cars the civic is good everyday driving but i use my boosted mx5 on the weekends it drives fantastic you cant dispute it people make fun but at the end of the day for the price you can't get anything close to it especially when you boost them. I would love to build a mx5 with a honda motor and turbo that you'll have a great recipe for fun
Thats about it, continues to list the mods
great vid would like to see a mr2 mk3 roadster there spose ta be really good on track like a poor mans lotus ellis !!
The emphasis on the tires 🤣
Got a E46 M3, but I’m up in NorCal and only do NorCal tracks
What vent is that on the Miata bonnet?
Miata was way ahead by the first turn...im a huge honda fan but miatas are the best track cars
Is this the same track as the R35 GTR vs the 240 SX?
Do it like Motortrend . Uncut side by side timed laps. The Civic suddenly made up lots of time at the end.
Well.... driver skill is the main thing in play. They are both equally fast cars. btw what car should I get Mazda or Honda?
anyone know which track this is?
Well Done Chris Willard! MIATA FTW
May the angriest bee hive win!!!🐝🐝🐝
real wheel drive is just too much fun to pass up. its more and more rare these days so being able to buy a fun reliable reel wheel drive car is awesome
Would be cool to see a 2zz celica gts (vvtli) go against a b18 vtec car
How do "massage" 135bhorsepower out of it when they come with 140 unless that is at the wheels but he didn't say that so which is it.
No VTEC = no surprise on result
Where the go pro at tho
Hello my name is Kash and I am 16. I am not sure what the age restriction is for this driver battle thing but I am very interested. I have a 1988 Nissan 300ZX with a VG33E swap. This car has been raced many times in the "24 hours of lemons" but I have only raced this car one time. That race is the only track time I have ever had. The car does have some suspension, exhaust work, and a gutted interior. I do have some other options for cars but that is the one I feel most comfortable with. Feel free to get back to me with your thoughts and the best way for me to contact you guys. Thanks.
I love both cars! I'll take the Miata!
I got a 94 integra type r clone that’s daily driven but is track really that will give most cars a run for their money.
As the owner of a 94 Miata 1.8 and a K-swapped 1993 Civic Hatch I feel that the civic is better overall but that may have to do with I have a better handling setup on the civic over the miata. Miata is bone stock and civic has spring, strut bracing, swaybars, better tires and brakes, and I've added weight to the rear to make the weight be about 52F/48R.
Not may those are the reason why it's better overall
@@riyokar6159 Compared to the stock Miata my Civic is much much better suited to drag, road racing and autocross but stock for stock...I'm not sure since the Civic has a double wish bone front end and semi-independant rear-end.
My 2 favourites
Pro-kit springs and 205 series tires would return similar lap time. It still won't beat the Miata, but you end up with the ultimate street car.
Every vid i watch late, being on someone with a comment. [Ive only seen 3 races so far... I wanna say the miata. But i don't know that suspension. Ive been burnt by a prelude on the hwy smaller engine but I'm gong with the civic because of the koni's. I have a 2001 miata by the way. His headers are 4-1 so he is sacrificing low-mid tq
Watching the few shots of the honda cornering his front tires didnt look square to the road even on extreme cornering like his camber was way off or lowered too much.
I'd love to participate in a head to head match ! I drive a FRS
Let's go, I'll race you in my euro R prelude sh with FBO full interior
Drive that FRS back to the dealership and grab a BRZ.

I dont know how someone with a 90s civic can say they wont drive a miata. Lol your both in the same catagory to other car enthusiast
He's a tool
There just cocky till they get a miata, dude probably bought a $400 one of craigslist and thought it was ganna beat Ferrari's. No no bud get one that works put some elbow grease into it. Shit will drive like a champ. Had a buddy that did that, he talked shit got one did maintenance he was depressed for weeks after selling it. Before that he had a hatch civic. Didn't see him get like that when he sold that honda.
Civic has a 120hp junk crv engine without VTEC common now. Atleast race a b16a engine civic. That mx-5 though is sexy
Hey Honda engines are designed pretty well, hate the sound love the engineering not all of them but most.
I had both a NA6 (stock) and an EG6 (B18) and I have to say the NA6 wont even come close in touching the civic. That said, the NA6 is alot of fun and one can drive it at the limit easily daily, whereas the civic is too fast to be driving at the limit on the roads. Both are fun cars.
2005 acura tl 6 speed family race car
135whp out of a miata engine is pretty insane. The ek chassis isnt one of the best honda chassis for something like this. I wonder if it has phk or p3f pistons? Also with a vtec head its game over
Honda boi so salty lol
I like to think I'm fast, I have a 6th Gen 1LE I also live in Socal
99 civic coupe with an LS Frankenstein vtec b18b tuned I’m down for some fun
DA integra chassis is better then EK chassis right out the box. EK it too played out lol
True I just love the ek chassis personally my favorite
Good race I still would take the hatch
Got a accord that has been surprising Subaru’s on the track I’d come out to play!
Got any videos on your whip?
Accords arent fun
All else equal, rwd wins over fwd. That said, my new track car is a b18a turbo CRX. My old track car is a '95 turbo Miata. If I can get the CRX within a second of the Miata's lap times, I'll be stoked. My Miata put the hurt on Vettes, Mustanks, even Porsche all over TX for years.
It was evident that the Miata held the corners better.
In the Honda’s defence driving tactics could have been better with less braking on corners while making use of the understeer across the whole corner.
The driving tactics for these two cars are opposite as themselves, one rear wheel drive and the other front wheel drive. I had a Honda Del Sol and Miata at the same time. Got rid of the Honda 25 years on the Miata still stays.
It would have been closer but the dude driving the honda had good lines but bad throttle input
golf mk2
pls i want to see it i subbed
2006 k20 SI lets do it
Those 2 engines at the same time is a confusing noise
Gotta say the miata engine sounds better, but man them Honda engine design and timing making sound like a trumpet, which makes me admire the design of the engine, pretty well made engine in my opinion even if they sound like a trumpet in the Hondas.
Civic baby got smoked
Sounds like Mario kart when they started racing 😂
James Bond any decent bmw will beat that Miata weight and all
I mean, car for car. One needs an entire swap to keep up.idc how “
For the Miata to be stock besides bolt ons, it’s a clear win
I wanna see someone with a b13 Sentra Se-r
Been there done that, engine went bam!. Piston rings went bye bye.
I've beat mustang's and hondas in it in straight lines, power sliding it thoe saved my life one time. My fault thoe I gunned it.
Fiesta ST FTW!
lol it's like 2 swarms of angry bees listening these two side by side
Why the Miata? Thant's a interesting question.
Miata is the answer to every question, So "because Miata?"
I own a crx, the fwd Miata.
That's a clean lookin civic. Too bad it didnt win.
Let me race my Mazda 6
Honda needed vtec. Also died laughing at the endless bwaaaaaa.... 2 minutes later.... whaaaoooo.
Honda did sounded 100% better!!
Which type is the Miata wing? I know is APR but which one?
You have to have the same driver for these kind of comparisons. Its redundent.
The series is literally called DRIVER Battles. It's not so much about which car is faster but which driver can get the fastest time
Basically aero vs non-aero
I own a miata, and your not ganna get much out of a tune running stock components. Add weight and some drag with the aero, and basically your racing with your ac on.
Pon un s2000 que sería su rival dos tracción traseras
I want to see what my 86 can do lol
The Miata had a better driver, and aero.
How can you not bring vtec 😭
I want to see a rotary Miata hit this track
should have spent the money on building a b20vtec with ITR replica pistons rather than using $2200 wheels... oh well
he has had those wheels forever and 15x7/8 can be found for 1-1.3k.
