Topic: The infamy of the song/music video 'Friday' sung by Rebecca Black.
Opinion: The story of this viral video represents the end of the early age of UA-cam as well as how much the platform (and the people who use it) have grown since.

I was not expecting to feel old when I clicked this video.
I thought it was a dumb song, but not to the point of saying anything inflammatory. My friends and I just made jokes about it together for a week or two and that was it. "We have become more sophisticated in how we digest online content."
People are constantly jumping on bandwagons, engaging in mass dislikes just for the sake of being part of something, tear each other down online, and cancel culture is a thing too. Everything is either viewed through the lens of their own simplified, narrow viewpoint, political and cultural discussions are reduced to absurd levels of tribalism, and people get their news, opinions, and ideas from memes or their favorite content creator. That just doesn't seem very sophisticated to me.

I think his statement was a bit too generalized. While obviously, there are still plenty of issues (and some new ones) with the way we digest content, I think overall it’s gotten better.
I remember back when I was little, most videos I watched would have several top comments with a negative slant, usually comparing the video they commented on to one they didn’t like. Now, it may just be that I watch videos targeted for older, more mature people, but it seems like the comments are a lot more encouraging and are more likely to offer legitimate commentary.

If you are looking for an argument against that point, I'm fairly certain that parents wouldn't allow their children to use their account on their work station. Children casually using an expensive piece of technology that parents have no idea how to fix themselves. And kids could probably access tons of websites that have PUPs, and malicious malware. Plus the content that parents thought kids would get into would be restricted, and if they didn't know how to do that, they wouldn't let them use it at all.
Now, your only strength in this argument is consoles, a lot of children had these things, but as for making a profile, and typing a comment is painfully slow and agonizing unless they had a keyboard attachment to their controller.

I wonder if that's what really happened... I don't like any of CA's reasoning this entire video (a rare, perhaps unique miss for him), it seems much more likely that the song simply hit the perfect mix of "this is so incredibly awful I'm going to share it with my friends for laughs" alongside it being ironically enjoyable.

    • @misskwannie
      @misskwannie 3 роки тому

@@Alkerae me too. Society (or more specifically teens and young adults) love to make fun of teenagers, especially teenage girls. To compare, Sweatshirt by Jacob Sartorius was also hated for the same reason. Except, he actually had young girl fans who made him feel somewhat popular. Insecure teenage girls also love to hate on each other so I don’t think the reason why she was hated is because she muddied the line between mainstream and home videos.

I think most people just lacked the context that it wasnt some wannabe popstar but just some kid having fun.
The song is pretty bad dont get me wrong, but the only reason we cared was probably because it was fun to hate on something as a community.
I just wish we didnt take it so far when we do these things, while most people were humorous about their hatred of the video, way too many people were downright mean.
Regarding your conclusion, if the song came out today I think the reaction would be up to chance. Could blow up as a meme or could just get talked about in a commentary channel and fade back to obscurity a week after.
    Theres no telling.
Also im just glad Rebecca made it out alright. Im glad she had nothing to do with actually writing or making the song since she was able to separate herself from the criticism that way. Criticism is a lot harder when something is actually your work, but since the song was only a heartless product to be sold I doubt she cared about the music itself being insulted. Sadly she still had to carry with a lot of hate directed at her though.

I think the other reason why UA-cam has changed so much is because the average demographic of UA-cam users in 2011 was probably very young and most of them were in their teens. So the average commenter on UA-cam probably didn’t have much of a filter and very little maturity to rationalize with the content being watched. I first Discovered UA-cam in 5th grade probably when I was like 10 or 11. I’m 22 years old now, so just doing a quick math, that was around the year 2009. So I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the UA-cam audience back then were either my age or at least six or seven years older than me. so now in 2020 that entire group of people are now a lot older and much more mature and can look back at all of this content with a little bit more respect.

    This made me nostalgic.
I mean a whole Decade went by. I can still remember the time i watched MysteryGuitarMan, Rhett&Link,Stop motion animation, Lego tutorials and even Pewds. Even then youtube still changed. From a whacky experiemental bag of fun then came challenges like the ice bucket challenge,HowtoBasic then FilthyFrank, idubbz. More Disgusting Hardcore Punk like content appeared then it lead up to now. This really has been a true Decade closer as i spend most of my time on Yt as a child till now. I hope YT morph into something great in the future. No more ad-pocalypse, no more censorship and please no more Supressing of channels. I have subscribed to a lot of channel during the years and it really pains me when a channel of mine just dissapears. The community is strong. But UA-cam Right now needs to change for the better. No more hiding information and no more bots. I even have an idea to make a vimeo/dailymotion/Bitchute Combination to compete against YT. I want a place where video sharing is ok just like the old times.
