    i just can't wait until the old school style of games is brought back. it will happen, history always repeats itself. Maybe in 3 years, 5, or more, but an FPS will be released for console and the movement speed will be really high, no iron sights, floating weapons and ammo around the map that you pick up by simply running over it, not pressing or holding anything to collect. no loadouts, lag compensation, weapon levels or anything. non restrictive running and jumping. running does not have a limit and when it's released everyone will refer to the developer as "geniuses" and say things like "how did they come up with this!" just wait, it will happen, just a matter of when.

      Res It doesn't make any sense why they would do that. Have they not seen the Doom community? All I want is a source port and for others to make content just like they do for Doom.

      Viewtiful Joe It's quite a shame. Devolver Digital tried buying the rights for the series from them and the price they were given was reportedly ludicrous. Then in 2013 earlier one Jace Hall tried asking Atari if he could release the Source Code, and they told him no.
      Atari's pretty effing evil.

    I love Shadow Warrior, but the key/switch-hunting really pisses me off sometimes. Some of those keys are way too tough to find without a walkthrough. Still, I can't help but love the game. I guess I'm a masochist.

    I got the GoG version, and seem to be getting on with it quite well!
    Only issue is the dodgy skybox, and the intermittent crashes (usually caused by reloading/saving from a new game).
    But this game was waaaaay ahead of it's time! Great mechanics (no issues with the mouse, as you mentioned), and level design is stellar. The icing on the cake is the soundtrack; as it really adds to the gaming experience.
    Gets my vote!

    Only disadvantage of this version is the lack of multiplayer support for whatever reason. Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition and 20th Anniversary World Tour have it. Blood: Fresh Supply has it. Why doesn't this when original Shadow Warrior always had multiplayer?

    Just got through the main game and the first expansion, working on the 2nd one now. It was hard indeed and I'm a old school for real (almost 50), I found it rough even on the 'know no fear' difficulty (I refuse to play on the lowest one). I somehow missed this back in the 90s but it's damn good. Just make sure to save often!
    I never had a crash but they may have patched that.

    Your reviews are really well done however the only thing I feel your missing is a solid ending, with this review being a good example. A consistent sign off phrase or something like that would give a proper conclusion to each video as I feel that most end very abruptly. I appreciate that you don't score games in favor of letting viewers judge based on your first hand experience so ending on a score isn't really an option. Just something to consider, keep up the good work!

    You know, I wholeheartedly agree with you on Blood needing some love. I mean, eDuke32 and gzDoom are both some of the best source-ports EVER made, maybe only rivaled by Darkplaces or Epsilon, and yes, I'm aware of the history of Blood's rights, and I've beaten it and every other 90's FPS in DOS, but the controls and nature of DOS are WHY these sort of remakes exist; Blood controls just... I don't know... I can grab Duke or Shadow Warrior and seem to control it fairly well, but as soon as I boot up Blood, I never have a genuine sense of control, and it generally gives me an awkward feeling to play it, with this sort or spastic and slippery style, no matter how I've mapped it. Shadow Warrior is guilty of this as well, with its vanilla mouse controls being WAY too slow, even on higher sensitivities, and I never feel like I'm able to aim straight, despite the auto-aim in the game helping. Blood, however, I feel like it needs to have a source-port or redux. I've read of people trying to remake all of Blood in eDuke32, but it's not been finished for years, and it's a real shame, because I've played all version of zBlood, and I must admit... it's not good... and the only redeeming quality of zBlood is the resources for WAD makers, as the textures work well in a lot of my favorite WADs, like Hell Grounds and Unloved. Great review, as usual, by the way.

  • @GugureSux

    I'd personally just recommend grabbing the Shadow Warrior 3D "classic" from Steam (it's FREE!), and slapping the SWP source-port on top.
    It literally does everything this "remaster" does: allows using modern widescreen resolutions, lets you enable texture filters, configure controls like you want, etc.

    I 100% agree about the difficulty.I bought this game about 2 years ago and it was my first retro shooter since I'm pretty young.Boy, this was the worst fucking game to start with, talk about trial by fire...I died sooo many times, I had no idea how to avoid getting killed by those goddamn kamikazes and super ninjas but even then it never stopped being fun, whenever I died I simply reloaded and gave it another try and sooner or later I started getting good at it and I finally mastered the art of strafing.It was so satisfying when on my second playthrough I had no problem beating entire levels from start to finish without quicksaving.
    The only problem though is that now I can't play modern military shooters properly anymore because I instinctively start jumping around instead of getting to cover.

I grew up playing DooM, Unreal Tournament, Quake III, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory etc. and now FPS are so slooooooooooooooow and "realistic" I struggle everytime to not jump around and avoid straferunning and bunny hopping...

HOW DID HE HIT ME EVERY SINGLE TIME?"
      3 seconds later I facepalm remembering this was made in 2008.

    i found out why it's do tricky to aim. something that was putting me off the game actually. there's some kind of acceleration going on for both vertical and horizontal aim separately. once i tweaked them down to be both at the same speed the game became %100 more enjoyable. it's a very strange feature actually especially because the default feels so out of sync

    Cool; played them all back in the days. Also a positive point is that you can operate them with a mouse: I am not used to the keyboard mappings anymore. The GOG version of SWCR offers a splash screen to load either expansion pack.
    Not as comfortable as a single menu within the port, but less annoying than the Steam library, so I'd rather go for GOG (and I did).
    Also, not quite an exact official sourceport, but BloodGDX (now BuildGDX) does a pretty impressive job and offers (if I'm not mistaken) all the chapters (expansion pack included) it can detect from your Blood folder on the chapter selection menu. So no need for fiddling with the settings.
    So there's that.
    It also includes support for other Build games (Duke, Redneck Rampage, Witchaven and TekWar -the last two are a bit of a joke, but I'll admit both Witchaven games are a guilty pleasure. They might only be enjoyable with cheats, but they had a distinct style that caught my eye and I kinda liked it).

    Just to shed some light on why you have to select the games from Steam instead of from ingame:
    The way that you were suggesting would have to work would either be through a shell program that launches independently before the actual game starts (which would be very similar in the long run to launching from Steam) or have the three games within a library of the main game, which would act as a sort of emulator. The issue with the first method is that selecting which game you wish to play would exit the main game and launch a new game, which can cause a lot of issues with Steam (especially in regards to Steam overlay and Steam achievements.) The issue with the latter method is that it could cause unneeded overhead processing which could cause lag in lesser computers, as well as mess with the way that all three games handle saves.
    A third method would be to combine all of the games together into one game, which would require massive reprogramming (especially considering that the expansions write over a lot of the data in the original game, meaning that all of that resource allocation would need to be entirely rewritten, leading to major parts of said games being completely overhauled). This would also mess with the save game files having unfortunate intermingling as well which MIGHT cause issues depending on how the unification of the games is handled. This would require a lot of reworking of the entire foundational programming for these games, so I can't fault 3D Realms for not wanting to mess with it.

    • @dschwamm
      @dschwamm 9 років тому

      +Gggmanlives No, but when I was learning to program I spent a lot of time breaking down Build engine, Doom engine, Quake engine, and Source Engine games to see how they'd work or to make mods. From a professional programming standpoint, the reasons I listed are just what I can conclude from knowing how those build engine games work and knowing what it would take to make something like these rereleases. I could be argued that the vast amount of work I mentioned should still be put forth to make the rereleases feel more complete.

    To be fair on the mouse aiming bit... mouse aim always felt clunky as hell in the Build engine games. The only one of them that I use it on is Blood, simply because that game's the hardest of the bunch. I never really had problems going keyboard only on Duke 3D or Shadow Warrior though. The "whipper-snappers" these days would probably start crying the moment they tried to do a keyboard-only run.
    Also comparing stuff to Dark Souls isn't really all that helpful. Those games really aren't all that difficult. The only times it really becomes difficult are when it does something that doesn't suit its combat system, ie. throwing multiple enemies at you who have ridiculous range or unblockable attacks (bell gargoyle fire breath spam, anyone?), requiring you to fight a fast enemy when every single movement you make feels like you're moving through molasses, etc. The difficulty is just greatly exaggerated... then again I played the Gothic games, where pretty much everything one-shots you until the endgame, so maybe I'm just used to more difficult stuff than your typical gamer. The Build engine games are just plain balls-to-the-wall hard though.

    • @Gggmanlives
      @Gggmanlives  9 років тому +1

      +DWTerminator I never had serious mouse issues in the original games, it feels gimped in this remaster. I think Dark Souls is pretty unforgiving and relentless which is why I compare it to Shadow Warrior. It's almost like "oh hey, you've already died 10 times, well check this new enemy out" and that's what I always felt like playing Shadow Warrior for the first time and encountering new foes.

    • @DWTerminator
      @DWTerminator 9 років тому +1

      Do you enable the full mouse look or just stick with the horizontal? The latter works fine but vertical and especially diagonal movements have a strange way of registering that takes a lot of getting used to. And that's going off the original DOS versions, by the way.
      And while I can see what you mean by "unforgiving" and "relentless," they're very different expressions of that. I frankly think it's kinda sad that we have the Souls games as a "measuring tool" now just by nature of it hitting the mainstream as a game that's harder than your typical casual-oriented AAA game... but oh well.

      G3's combat is actually incredibly easy unless you enable the community patch alternate variant. In the base game, you just hammer the attack button until the enemy falls over. I was referring more to Gothic 1 & 2.

For 3D Realms games try these: EDuke32 (Duke Nukem), SWP or JonoSW (Shadow Warrior) and if the company that has the Blood source code (either Atari or Monolith) would release it to the community then we could have a source port for it as well.

    I did love this more then Duke 3D etc at the time. + the humor was kinda funny for me even back then. Even the new game is on pair with this in terms of gun play and fun factor. Tho the basic version is free on steam. The redux is def worth the extra money. But yeah, the difficulty vs Duke 3D even on medium is way higher.

    The first thing I usually do with these remasters of classic shooters is turn off auto-aim, as the modern mouse aiming usually means it's no longer necessary. I had to leave auto-aim on for Shadow Warrior Redux, as due to the random spray of the Uzis the game is unplayably hard even in the first few levels without auto-aim.

    In these early 3d shooting games you never want to try and load a new game from a quick save while still in game and not at the main menu. In fact to be safe you should restart the game. These early games put a lot of crap in memory that junks it up and starting and reloading the game multiple times from in game overloads the memory and causes crashes.
    The problem still exists to some extent and for example in a fairly modern game like New Vegas I ran into this same issue. In fact once I knew this I hardly ever had any crashes in that game and although a lot of modern gamers took New Vegas to task for the crashes I think that was the real reason. Loading quick saves from in game.
    I know it's a pain but to prevent crashes quit the game and restart it to be safe,

    Interesting. I had no lag/acceleration problems with mouse-look on nor did I have issues with frequent crashes(actually pretty sure I didn't have a single one). In fact, I prefer playing both Duke3D and SW with mouse-look enabled and auto-aim(which is huge btw...doesn't only aim up and down for you, which was necessary in the originals, but side to side to a smaller degree as well) disabled, makes them even harder than back then.

    That's weird that Duke 3D Megaton Edition doesn't have all the episodes in one menu on PC. I got it on PS3 when it was on sale and you selected the expansions all in the same game. The only problem with that version is HUD issues if you're playing using composite video an what might be a texutre issue in the second level of Duke it Out in DC. IDK about that one since I only have Atomic edition on PC.

    I just beat the main story mode yesterday. Man, talk about a hard game. Lots of instant death or attacks that'll take almost a 100hp. I hope the DLC is as good as the base game. I'd say this game is at least 50x better than Wolfenstein II. Though stepping in dog shit barefoot is better than that game.

    I'm not really impressed by these "redone" versions.
    I can play Doom-engine games like Heretic (my most played Doom-engine game), Hexen and Strife with GZDoom no problem - they're stable, I get free-look, I can jump, and I have tons of graphical tweaks, all for free (if you have the original wads).
    Couldn't something like this have been done for the Build engine?
    I mean, yes, it's very different from the Doom engine, so it would require more work, and probably every game would need to be done separately, but hey, if you're asking money for it, might as well do a proper job!

    • @Gggmanlives
      @Gggmanlives  9 років тому +15

      Blood is in rights hell, which is why we haven't seem a proper source port. :(

    • @huru2guru
      @huru2guru 9 років тому

      +Gggmanlives For Shadow Warrior there is also *JFSW* (very first SW source port ever made, last build from 2005), *SWP* (more advanced "fork" of JFSW, lastly updated in 2010 and its last version 4.3.2 is very buggy) and unofficial fixed derivative of SWP which I recommend from free source ports. You can get it here: github.com/Hendricks266/SWP/wiki
      But at this moment Redux is pretty much the best thing you can get (which is in principle fixed and buffed up original JFSW).
      There are also rumors that developers of Eduke32 are working on port for SW, which will include all Eduke32 improvements (true +horizontal widescreen, fancy polymerer renderer, better mouse look and more).
      Funny thing is before Redux got released, expansion packs were considerer abandonware and were floating all over net. But I presume that changed now (just as with Strife Veteran Edition).
      BTW Gggmanlives, after playing SW, are you in mood for another Build engine game? Like maybe AMC TC? ;)

    • @alerommel1
      @alerommel1 9 років тому

      +Gggmanlives The thing is these two expansions packs have been released as freeware years ago, and they still remain free to downoad. Moreover, the main game is also free to download from Steam as "Shadow Warrior Classic". So this "redux" version is 10 $ wasted for very few graphical updates.

    • @Gggmanlives
      @Gggmanlives  9 років тому +1

    newer fps guys won't have an excuse for not playing them but they still won't play them. i swear man these newer fps guys are so shallow they can't go back and play anything. can't risk playing something their friends don't play, etc. if they couldn't go back and check out the Red Factions, RTCW, or last Gen's 'Wolfenstein' Singularity, the FEAR games, on and on, no way their playing this. I remember when CSGO was released for ps3 and literally almost ever player that would play (which wasn't long at all cause if its not COD then no one is playing it) would always say something like "this game is pretty cool i guess but lets go play black ops, invite me" and like 7 people would leave. it was always like that.
    btw, you think you'll be into the newest Shadow Warrior? part 2 coming out in basically 2017? i have a habit of getting any shooter if i can get it for cheap but just wondering since this last one was so different. by the end of it i was getting it confused Serious Sam, which dont get me wrong its awesome but serious Sam is different. In Shadow Warrior it got old having 30 enemies coming at you, 2 shamans resurrecting them and NO AMMO.

    I'd like Something like this for Doom 1&2 which would have them both in one place instead of having them in the Doom 3 BFG Edition which I can tell I'm going to play Doom 1&2 more then Doom 3 which is fine game but its not Doom. However I think it be more worth it to give Blood some of this love with all the Add on's and the cleaner Menus. Also with Doom and Shadow Warrior Reboots being so good, I know you didn't like Shadow Warrior too much still a good FPS reboot if you ask me, Maybe Blood will get the Next Reboot and take what Doom did and make it better or at least almost as good. Maybe even Duke Nukem can come back with this maybe

    Thanks to your videos I picked up Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem but I ended up not liking either of them. I played this Redux version too with mouse aim and it was just a miserable experience. Did you end up using only a keyboard to aim and shoot?
    Anyway, I enjoyed Doom so much more than these games. I just do not like the controls, feel of the weapons or the aesthetics in the art. It just isn't pretty to look at unless you're already fond of the old styles of the 90s "gotta be badass" going on.
