Ion Fury (formerly Ion Maiden) is a 2019 first-person shooter video game developed by Voidpoint and published by 3D Realms. Ion Fury runs on a modified version of Ken Silverman's Build engine and is the first original commercial game to utilize the engine in 19 years, the previous being World War II GI.
In Ion Fury, the player assumes the role of Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison, a bomb disposal expert aligned to the Global Defense Force. Dr. Jadus Heskel, a transhumanist cult leader, unleashes an army of cybernetically-enhanced soldiers on the futuristic city of Neo D.C., which Shelly is tasked with fighting through.
It is done.
Great Video Gman, but can you please review Team Fortress 2 in the future?
My new favorite UA-cam channel, its a damn shame I didn't find it until recently
I got one for you Dust: an Elysian tale fun game on the 360 and one of the most underated titles on the system primarily created by one guy
Were they rage, brutal, without mercy ? Did you rip and tear, until it was done ?
Hey sonny jim you're reviewing Vicious Circle from Stream
Absolutely agreed on its shortcomings regarding weapons variety and protagonist personality. It's _this_ close to something next level.
Still a surprisingly solid experience as far as retro FPS throwbacks go, with intriguing opportunities for future gameplay patches and/or sequels.
I enjoy your work, my good fellow. I was actually on my way to your video when I saw you here. We have to do something, sometime. Go skip stones a local swimming pool. I dunno, we'll figure it out.
Should it be something next level though? At this point, I think so much has been forgotten about what classic FPS games actually are (when you really think about it, they're actually streamlined dungeon crawlers) and how they functioned, the basics need to be recreated; developers need to re-learn how to make good maps, without relying on scripted sequences and cutting edge visuals.
Which is what this first crop of classic shooters have been doing - Amid Evil? Inventive level design, restrained and carefully balanced weapons. Dusk? Insane level design, drawing upon all sorts of classic games... restrained and carefully balanced weapons.
I think the future's looking pretty bright in this regard - with Wrath still to come, and possible expansions/sequels/mods for the current games, we'll probably see the developers get more inventive with the weaponry, now they've mastered the fundamentals anew.
Skeet Skeet why is gman a shill?
I've already seen your review as well. As much as the one liners go, meh, this seems to be OK but the arsenal is something that needs to be redone or extended at least in future updates.
considering the price of this game, i would say that price is totaly justified for the game

Make that 5.
First blood- as you said, Rambo and Blood.
Wanton carnage- Shadow Warrior
Ultra-viscera- DOOM and Clockwork Orange
You missed some things, man:
-The Clusterpuck has an alternate fire, it makes it throw even more bombs, works great against bosses and crowds, very destructive; also you can stick them to the walls and they turn into proximity bombs, use them right and it obliterates enemies, specially ambushing ones.
-The Ion Bow has another alt fire, if you leave the RMB pressed for long enough it shoots a barrage of bolt that kills most of everything.
-There's more than enough ammo and supplies in the secret areas, they help immensely and by finding them you pretty much never run out of ammo.
-The bowling bombs are super useful in taking enemies that are out of view, just roll them around a corner, hear them panic and explode. Maybe that's also why you kept running out of ammo, 'cause you refused to use them as much.
-The Electrifryer can take out the spider enemies in 1 hit, they overcharge and explode, saves on ammo and it's fun to watch.
I consider this review as you consider the game: flawed. While I don't think it's perfect, I also don't think you gave it enough credit. This review just feels rushed.
I agree on most of your points. I do think the review misses some important weapon alts/uses and is overly harsh as a result. Plus, in regards tot he review, the not-feeling-like-a-baddass is kinda more an expectations thing, this game makes me feel like a skilled tactical operator instead of a lucky son-of-a-gun nuke, which is cool, and I think that not feeling as good is mostly to do with the open areas - which could do with more designed and restricted sight-lines / cover.
However, and this isn't to undermine what you've said in the other points, I don't think the secret areas point really stands strong. Hallmark of the genre is that secret areas are hard to find, and often contain either a weapon early and/or ammo for the high power weapons. Now ion fury does pull through on the first part, extremely so, but to it's detriment. It's really annoying having to break up the flow of the game to scrape your face against every wall in the areas you've already cleared to scrounge up just enough basic weapon ammo to last more than a few moments in the next room. The radar definitely helps somewhat, but it's nowhere near enough to provide a smooth experience. Of course once you know them, it's different, but that's different from a regular playthrough / only helps after you die.
I disagree about the bowling bombs, they are amazing and probably the best feeling weapon in the game imo
Extremely satisfying, and you get additional incentive for using them what with armor drops.
Also he missed super-fire mode for crossbow, that annihilates anything much faster than bfg)

My god. "There aren't enough throwback shooters!." - a couple of years later: "There are too many throwback shooters!"
I called this out a few years ago when I said retro shooters would become a fad.
Imagine that, someone's opinion changes over time...whoa...
I think they all just should run on different engines and should have more variation with pixel-art and realism graphics.
@@Gggmanlives that wasn't my point, man. Everyone's opinion can change, but I feel we should be thankful for the throwbacks we have today. Only a few years ago we were saturated with skilless, bland COD clones. Now, the market is much more varied. There are cod clones AND classic FPS throwbacks - there are so many to chose from now that shooter fans of almost any style can find something they like. There is no reason to be upset with the recent resurgence of retro-FPSs - they aren't replacing other shooters - they are complimenting them. If you're sick of retro-FPSs, that's ok, because there are tons of other shooters to meet your needs. So, yeah, I think the argument that there are "too many" is silly - you don't have to play them, and they simply add to your options as a player
@@Gggmanlives I'd rather have this than those live service games the industry are forcing down our throats ripping the fun out of gaming and making them a chore. Like Anthem, Apex Legends. This is great keep these style of games coming
I think looking for the secrets is big help for finding ammo and armor.
My boy!! I supported this back when it was Ion Maiden and I couldn’t be happier. Long live the build engine and the retro renaissance
Hedon was fantastic, check out Blade of Agony, also the DUSK/Amid Evil combo. Along with any of the NightDive remasters (specially Blood!). You can also get on the GZDoom Source Port and check out all of the Cacoward winners and have hours of incredible content (Pirate Doom/Ashes2063/etc)
TheApothecaryAus I have amid evil and dusk but I’ll check out the other two. Thanks!
@@awildwoolooappears2487 All good man. When this clown from QLD says he's sick of retro shooters, what's the alternative? shitty GaaS subscriptions? No thanks. So you gotta share the love with these smaller titles.
@King Greed Not really, they have to protect their copyright in order not to lose it. It's not like the band gives the slightest fuck about this game or the name similarities. It just has to be done.
Hell yeah! I'll go with the Build Engine!
It's in my top 3 favorites: after Quake engine and Id-Tech II.
I've only played the early access but i appreciated the low ammo tbh, it forces you to use every weapon, and to not always be able to use the best weapon for the situation. I also like that it isn't one of those games where you never again select the pistol after picking up your first shotgun.
Yeah, I mean I played the beta on the hardest mode and tbh I never felt dry on ammo at all? Maybe they changed on the final build, or maybe I just found too many stashes, but I was always sorta loaded? Plus yeah that goddamn Pistol is so good, it's basically a shotgun at points. The Dead Eye thing really makes it useful at medium distances.
@@QMMarc Good point, I was definitely looking for every secret I could. It's a Build game! I played on ultra viscera and like, it should definitely be mandatory that you have to find at least half the secrets in order to have enough ammo if you're playing on that level. Plus, there are insane amounts of secrets.
@@Tangers3345 There's a stupid amount of secrets indeed, searching for myself without guides I could only get like, 60% of them, it's crazy.
Yep, Shadow Warrior was like that too. They wanted to teach you that its not about picking your favorite gun and using only that, they gave you a full toolkit of fun toys for a reason.
@@Tangers3345 yep, Play in miderate first, appoint secrets, return in Max diffucult, win... Is the same as Duke and co.
This isn't the first time the band Iron Maiden has forced a name change.
Iron Maiden forced the comic book "Iron and the Maiden" to change its name to "The Iron Saint".
I think it's crazy that the band has put a copyright on their band label, because iron maiden comes from a torture device.
As a copyright holder you have to protect the use of the name in order not to lose the copyright. I'm pretty sure the band doesn't even have a say in it as these things are usually done by the management.
@@cy9nvs That doesn't really matter since the copyright shouldn't exist in the first place because it's just a common noun, a name for an actual, existing thing.
At least “iron saint” sounds way more badass Iron Maiden.

>never found much use for the crossbow alt. fire
Have you tride holding the alt. fire key without letting go of it?
And even if not for that, the amount of bolts fired is determined by how long you've held the button;
so you could shoot only two of them at a time, which obliterates most standard mooks without the need to go for a headshot.
The crossbows ultimate alt fire absolutely destroys boss fights. I feel like a lot of criticisms in this review are pretty subjective
Great review, but after now been watching Civvie11 review. I feel like you didn't properly use all the weapons or their secondary fires, for example the discs with their secondary explosion have enormous AOE
I ran out of ammo for the disperser like three times... in two playthroughs in Ultra Viscera. He's doing it very wrong
@@pagb666 I have no idea how he had a problem with dispenser ammo unless hes doing something wrong like not going for headshots or something. True i ran out two or three times but the ammo complaint was pretty immediatly fixed once i got better at the game and got past the first episode.
Later in the review he admits that he mostly used just weapons 1-2-3 ... So... that was a idiotic rant.
@@Smilephile This!! Also, headshots are cathartic as hell.
gggmanlives: “My problem with Shelly is she doesn’t really feel like a badass.”
Shelly: *Annihilates an entire army of cybernetically enhanced soldiers and creatures all by herself while running around at mach speed and carrying a shitload of weapons at once. All while not having any augmentations at all it seems.*
I think what kills her being a badass is she doesn’t have a unique voice. I 100% think it’s her voice actor. Her voice doesn’t sound very unique or memorable enough make her lines fun to listen too.
She just sounds like a typical girl, you know? Duke had a unique voice that made his lines memorable. The same can be said for Caleb and Lo Wang. It really is all about the delivery imo.
Yeah, she still doesn't convince me, she still needs something to caractherise her.
I haven't played the game yet so I can't comment on Shelly, but think about Rey from Star Wars. She can fight a sith who's been trained since childhood despite never using a lightsaber before, she can fight the body guards of the most powerful sith lord, she can perfectly fly a spaceship she's never even seen before etc etc. Yet, I don't think I've ever heard anyone calling her badass. Just badly written character.
Same goes for Anakin in Episode 1. A 9-year-old kid just single handedly destroys a huge space station? I don't think anyone thought that was badass.
Boba Fett barely does anything yet he's still considered a badass character. As Junichiro says, it's all about the characteristics that make them badass. And since it's a first person game with apparently no cut-scenes, all that's left is voice acting. To me her voice acting just sounds a bit forced. Imagine her talking a longer monologue with that voice. It'd be like ".. can't you just talk like a normal person?" :D
Shelly is a better character than Duke and people's nostalgia gets in the way of seeing that. Better insults, less cringe, better line delivery (sorry Jon, but you are better as Heskel in this game than you ever were as Duke)
Shelly also survived an explosion that killed her squad and takes her arm and gets a prosthetic arm. Not to mention that she kills Heskel twice.
tested an earely build on a pentium 3 system and it ran it fine at 640 by 480 :)

Fun fact: Until the Final Release it was still Ion Maiden in the start screen.
RIP IN PIECES
I'm pretty sure a quick mod will fix that
It's not a GmanLives review without him complaining about a lack of ammo in an old school fps.The part where he complains about getting sick of getting good, old school shooters coming out instead of cinematic Call of Duty campaigns and empty open worlds like Rage 2,especially when this is the first one on the Build engine that is more in the style of games like Duke Nukem 3d and Blood, was pretty embarrassing to watch.
Yeah, I'm noticing a trend with his reviews (he's not very good at these games).
Cause you always ran out of ammo in Duke 3D and Blood...
@@Gggmanlives No. No you really don't. I'm OCD, miss a third the secrets still, and am always flush with ammo in any retro or retro styled FPS. You just genuinely aren't that great at these games.
I'm halfway through the game now on Ultra Viscera, and am pretty much always topped off on ammo. I'm not even using secrets that much, I find like 3 or so per level. Ammo scarcity (or lack thereof?) seems pretty much on par with Shadow Warrior or Blood. As long as you use explosives for enemy groups you're unlikely to run out of ammo. So really, I cannot understand that point of critique, it seems pretty much in line with the style of game it is inspired by. So unless the game suddenly starts to become extremely miserly with ammo I think it's pretty balanced.
edit: Thinking back now, I think I ran out of ammo a lot more in Shadow Warrior, but especially Blood. I have yet to come into a situation in Ion Fury where I am happy to have an enemy drop a few shotgun shells because I'm down to melee. That happened quite often to me in those games.
@@saraczwei6850 I also ran out of ammo in Blood a lot more than this game in Ultra Viscera, though it wasn't a problem in Blood either it just forced me to vary my weapon usage depending on the situation, which I enjoyed. I often leave areas with some of the more common ammo drops left unneeded.
Not gonna lie, I was expecting this week's video to be about Doom 3 BFG Edition.

@May Kitsune VR mod? I remember it had VR video mode on release.
>I'm starting to get sick of these oldschoold pixalated throwback shooters. It's like the industry is being flooded with them.
Good. That's a good thing. I lived through the modern warfare craze and I never want to live through that shit again. I'm loving the throwback vibe and I hope it never ends. I'd pick these pixalated shooters over any Modern military FPS any day. Now, They can't all be winners sure, but I think it's a net positive in the end. And most of them are good, in my opinion at least. Ama ride the retro FPS wave for all I can and hope it doesn't end soon.
Exactly, werent so long ago people were sick to death of modern shooters, now they are sick of throwbacks? its like make up your fucking mind or better yet dont play them, nobodys forcing you too...
I'm personally waiting for the wave of indie games calling back to Half Life or other FPSs from the late 90s/early 2000s. Maybe one day.
@@vinnie245 "make up your fucking minds"
Why does it have to be only modern shooters or only throwbacks? Why both both? That's why it's a problem, if this keeps up throwback pixelized fps will just end up the new modern shooter.
The great thing about being flooded with these oldschoold pixalated throwback shooters is that you can pick out the best of them. Better to have 50 where you can pick 2 amazing ones than only have 2 and they're okay but only because you got nothing to compare it with.

8:50 Saying no BFG type of weapon.
9:02 Showing BFG type of weapon, but forgetting to try alternative mode which easily cleans whole room of enemies.
@captain raleb I think you are talking about crossbows BFG mode, the disk actually works pretty fast, and few of those easily take care of weaker groups, while crossbow easily kills any big bad guy.
I have been playing this sort of shooters for 2+ decades, with Doom's and Duke's fan made maps and TCs. No, they don't get old. Example: Doom's wad community.
You are the last person I'd expect to complain about seeing too many of these games. It is great that we actually have a choice nowadays. If you are tired of this subgenre of FPS, Go play some open world shooter or some midern cinematic one. It is beyond lame to complain in a way that implies we need FEWER shooters of this sort being made.
I'm playing catching up, because I had a few years barely playing any game, but it doesn't feel like there are that many of them, like we started hearing quite a bit about retro shooters coming back with strafe maybe (or hellbound?), and we got dusk, amid evil and this and there are just 3-4 more coming, it's just a couple games per year.
Jarl Nicholl is not that mush either like there diffrence style maybe 2020
Again we get battle royale and other cod so
Absolutely!! Unlike the delusion of this reviewer - the list of recently
made, good classic style FPS games - is not very long at all.
Rather the opposite! We most definitely need more of those.
@@LeFaucheur You're right! And the existing ones are not going to appeal
to every classics fan out there, which makes the list even smaller.
For instance, i can't stand the toy-like style of Amid Evil, so for me
that game simply does not exist.
@@HexenStar Well, it was 3 years ago, now there are many more retro FPS in development, just have to see realms deep last year, and even then it's only a fraction of the retro FPS in development. (mine wasn't featured) Of course it depends on what you call "classic" since a lot of them are modernised and not just copies of old games, and also what you consider good. Amid evil is one of my favourites so far, and I've probably tried a good dozen of them.
Bro, I absolutely struggled with ammo for workhorse guns in Blood on the higher difficulties. That game also had lots of hit-scanners in bigger areas. That is absolutely in line with *some* old school shooters. You don't have to like it, that's fine. But I don't think it is objectively bad. Finally playing this game. One of the things that I really love about it is it almost has Half-Life style level progression. One level flows seamless into the next. Though it is broken up into chapters. So it's more like a hybrid of a Doom/Duke style campaign with a Half-Life style. Weird that he complains about the guns having a lack of "paradigm shift", and then goes onto compare it to Duke 3D's ice/shrink/expansion guns, which I never felt were useful since they required multiple steps to even use to kill an enemy.

I think I'm really starting to understand why people point out why Gmanlives isn't... very good.
The Bow gun is the game's power weapon, there is a 3rd firing mode that shoots a volley of bolts in a straight path rather than spreading, dealing a lot of damage, it eats chunks of health off the second boss.
Wow, the weapons look fun.
ma man didn't use Melee, didn't use bowling bombs, didn't use the shotgun, didn't use the clusterpuck, probably played on Ultra hard, and then said some parts and enemies are frustrating .
Melee weapon are literally the best bet against those little spider bugs, and zombies. And bowling bombs, I don't even need to mention how useful they are against the centipede enemies, the zombie hordes, and taking out enemies in corners. The best thing is that the bombs don't explode until they come in contact with an enemy.
Yeah it doesn't have that "build engine" coolness the old games had. In those games every level was like a new locale that you felt inner joy to behold and explore.
When you played those it was like, "where am I going now?" "I'm on a train, now I'm in a theater, now a sushi bar, a bathhouse, a submarine" In this it's like "I'm in a neo-city level" that goes on and on. Although I'm not done with the game yet.
The guns aren't so goofy and fun to have either. It's just pistol, shotgun, machine gun.
Gman really didn't know how to utilize the weapons to their fullest.
Shits kicking off with the Devs . Foolish
The real Cyberpunk 2077. So much fun with this game.
Frankly, I think you’re being a bit harsh on the main character. I think Shelly stands among the rest of them in the build engine FPS world. I think she’s as much a bad ass as duke is. The voice actress really delivered the tone for a shooter like this too
I really hope they continue to use and improve the build engine!. So we can get more games.
Currently enjoying every single part of this game on a Ultra Visciera/100% playtrhough. I would argue ultra viscera isn't that hard, it just recquire to play the game like some kind of tactical shooter, checking every single corner with the disperser, sniping at (safe) long range with the Ion Boy or LoveBoy and abusing the Bowling Bomb and bouncing grenade to take out ennemies around corner without exposing yourself : that's the way I love to play FPS at least, but I understand most people would want to rush (Doom-style) considering this is a retro-fast-FPS.
Like everyone, I too wish there were an extra "bfg" weapon to complete the arsenal, but I can't complain much considering how crazy good the level design and overall "urban-cyberpunk" aesthetics are. Man, this game even has a Deus Ex reference, Laputan Machine. When's the sequel ?!
A review without making a direct reference to a phallic/painful item being inserted in a natural human orifice.
I still like the way Gman writes his scripts.
Completely agree about the weapons, felt that way since the first ion maiden demo. I’m really surprised it doesn’t have even a rocket launcher.

Holding right-click *all the way* with the crossbow, makes it the power weapon you're looking for.
It fires about 50 rounds.
Clusterpucks can be attached to walls as mines. Select the puck, walk up to a wall and the holding sprite will change. You can now attach the puck to the wall. And the clusterpucks alternative fire turns it into a room wiping cluster-bomb.
Not much use for the Ion Crossbow...? Most bosses go down very, very fast, as in seconds, with it even on Ultra Viscera. This whole review seems a bit like he didn't get the most out of the weapons and the way he played/moved around on, especially since most enemies have a weapon they're weak against.
Examples (Obviously spoiler-ish):
Brown cloak robots: One/two normal shots from Loverboy.
Shotgun robots: Two shots from the Loverboy.
The tall, red cloaked robots: Alternative fire Loverboy, one use and they go down.
Flying green heads: Use the Penetrator, and aim for the heads. They go down instantly.
Flying red robots: Penetrator again, but more bullets needed.
Now, these are just my observations from playing on Ultra Viscera and just some of them, but I found that pretty much all weapons have a good use in certain situations.
You're going to die if you think you can just burst in, run in the middle of the hall and tanking all enemy fire on Ultra Viscera.
Also, the bowling bombs are the best room-checker (for a first playthrough) that I've seen in these types of games, since they don't explode unless they lock on to an enemy and you can just pick them up.
Unfortunately that seems to be a common complaint with Gman nowadays. It feels as if he plays it once and as familiar as possible with little experimentation, and then reviews it.
I think that’s partially why people enjoy Civvie more than Gman just because Civvie plays through games at least twice on almost all of his reviews, and throws in some tips/general thoughts post commentary. A lot more likable if you ask me personally, not that Gman is horrible in comparison mind you.
There are easter eggs everywhere in this game.
Ones that I found:
- Reference to The Room film with a poster for Mark's Relationship Counselling Advice with the tag line ''I did not hit her, it's bullshit. I did not''
- Heskell says ''Despite all your rage, you're still just a rat in a cage'' - Lyrics from the Smashing Pumpkins track 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings'
- There is 'Prestige Worldwide' written on one of the walls in the first Episode. Reference to the film 'Step Brothers' with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.
- ATMs all quote Duke Nukem 3D whenever you interact with them, like 'Shake It Baby!'
- Thy Flesh Consumed movie posters - DOOM Reference.
Damn Gman wines a fuckton in this one! lol
Watching this review after completing the game on Ultra viscera was quite the ego stroke, thank you.
You do know you can use the Pucks as proximity mines like the Laser-Trip Mines in Duke3D also their secondary explosion has massive AOE making them like Blood's Dynamite.
Perfect if you can for-see a enemy ambush when you flip a switch.
I've been waiting so long for this to release! I bought it ages ago and have been replaying the demo like once a week lol.
I'm like... a good portion into the game and I still haven't had the issue of running out of ammo on anything. Maybe cause I take my time and find secrets, I dunno. Maybe take it a bit slower?
Yes, he failed dat, is any build engine Game, in Max diffucult the secrets are mandatory
I also take it slow and hunt for secrets, and I was still frequently low on ammo for the penetrator, even though I don't use it more than the other weapons. I ran out on the dispersor sometimes too, but not so often that I'd call it a problem.
@@harbingerdawn The Penetrator drains ammo like a fat kid in a candy store though. But I dunno, ammo for it was still around enough for me to use it now and then. It's just the kind of game that incentivizes using all the weapons and not just sticking to one.
The secret of the fun with this game is that the gameplay has 2 opposite phases, the one where you use the big guns (btw, the clusterfuck is strong and funny if you push the little red button) until you run out of big bullets (bombs, ion bolts gatling bullets), and the one where you recover those bullets sniping with the revolver, doing headshots, and exploding spiders with the electric baton. (because both mechanics, headshots and auto-exploding with melee were not present in Duke, Blood or Shadow Warrior)
Totalbiscuit would love the game same with dusk and midevil
Rip John
Your description of the difficulties is literal perfection, I haven't laughed that hard in a while.
Wouldn’t the ion bow be useful in the open areas? Same with the bowling bombs.
It's also stupidly good on the boss fights if you fully charge it up with the alt fire, because then it just goes insane. I think Gman missed it.
Yup the bombs really help in open areas
@@Shuda51 yes, some weapons shine more in bosses rather mobs
Completed it on max fury, here's how it went for me.
A lot of quick saves, a LOT.
Playing slowly and using anything and everything as cover.
If you hold down the right click (alt fire) of the crossbow, it'll shoot like an automatic weapon for a few secs, you're gonna need it a lot for some tougher enemies. Thank me later.
Scavenge as much as you can, you'll need those resources!
Bowling balls are really useful for crowd control when you're hidden or in cover or in a place where enemies can't get to you.
Collect and save the super damage power-up for the boss fights, believe me you'll need it.
Electrifier can be used to kill some tougher enemies (dont even dare to use it on the guy with the flaming head and red body, i found this the hard way) if they're alone, this will save you some ammo but remember to keep pushing into them to keep them stunned, i used it against those later enemies that lunges at you from far away.
Lastly,
FUCK THOSE SPIDERS.
Unless you played before the electrofrier buff, the spiders are nothing but ankle biters, just lure them in, crouch and hold the perpetual alt fire, they will walk in to it and with 1 or 2 taps they are gone.
WON TON CARNAGE sounds like a pretty good time tho
Won ton carnage is just me at the chinese joint
This game is such a love letter to 90's america. That die hard line is awesome and its also awesome exactly the way they use it in the game.
Gman says: Your only really going to use 3 weapons. Gman says: There was never enough ammo for the workhorse weapons. Conclusion: Gman doesn't know how to play Ion Fury.
No.
I do enjoy his Reviews but to me Gmanlives is not a very good fps player.
This is bout my favorite yt channel. Love your humbleness and comedy.
They should’ve just put Blood out w/this ultra-polished re-do of the Build-Engine.... all this game does is make me pine for Blood to be this well done...
Fuck yeah. I had a feeling this video would be coming at some point today. The Gman never disappoints.
Washington 4skins?!?! 😂😂😂I'm dead!!!! My manager is a huge skins fan I'll have to tell him about that. Then again 3D realms is based in dallas.........
3D realms didn't develop the game though, they're the publisher. The developer is Voidpoint, with a Californian lead and a global design team.
100% agree with your criticisms here. The real big issues are the lack of ammo and boring weapons lineup. Maybe they can still fix the issues, but it’s probably too late for that.
I think you missed the mark on a few things bud. The Bowling Bomb does lack crowd control because that's what the Clusterpuck is for. The alternate fire mode of the Clusterpuck will clear and entire room and sometime even blow a wall up revealing a secret just from throwing down one. It's stupid powerful. The Ion Bow also has an Overcharge mode where you keep holding the alternate fire button until the bow shoots half it's ammo capacity in a huge arc clearing an entire room/hallway. The Penentrator has dual wield or single wield mode to better balance ammo vs power. The reason why the Grenade launcher is it's own weapon is because it's an armor farming weapon. When you blow enemies up with explosions you have a chance of making them explode dropping their armor and you can pick these orange/yellow armor pieces up before they disappear unlike the blue armor pickups that never disappear until you pick them up. Different enemies are killed easier using different weapons as well. Also the enemies are not hitscan in the least bit. There's a distinct difference. It's a twitch-shooter style of game. Otherwise a great review. I love this game. I just hate that Iron Maiden made them change the name from Ion Maiden to Ion Fury. Fucking tools.
The stun baton is great for conserving ammo in certain places, particularly for destroying obstacles (which can yield useful bonuses).
You have to raid Area 51 to get a copy of Ion Fury with actually fun weapons.
We need our:
• Nuke ball: Nuclear bouncy ball
• Magic Gun: revolver with bullets bounce out of enemies to hit another enemy.
• Actual Sniper Rifle: Yeah m8, the gov didn't want you to get it.
• FOV slider
• Moombahton music in a low gravity level.
Come on guys they can't stop all of us, we can let the normies be the distraction and we'll gun it.
The game has a FOV slider...
In Area 51 it's still called Ion Maiden.
Regarding the Ion Bow, if you overcharge it for too long it becomes fully automatic until the charge is empty
Duke Nukem Mod for Ion Fury in 5, 4, 3, 2...
I dont even care about the game, give me mods so i can play as Duke or DoomGuy. Fuck that bitch and that story tbh.
Rumour has it Gman works at the parts counter of Supercheap auto and still owns his first car, an '84 Gemini.
Yeah playing through this I never got that feeling of a "crescendo" during the final levels where you are going against impossible odds and surviving like a total badass either. A good example of that feeling that comes to mind is the Aesir Headquarters from Max Payne 1.
The feeling I had from the end of Max Payne 1 was,
SHIT
**quickload**
DAMN IT
**quickload**
AAAAAGH

PLEASE DIE

HOW DID THAT HIT ME!?
**quickload**
@@NicholasBrakespear I somehow managed to do it first try on my playthrough. Don't ask me how, I don't fucking know.
Such an amazing game!
Am i the only one who loves this Cyberpunk touch because of waiting for Cyberpunk2077 in April 2020?
Awesome! All I need next is Civvie11's review!
he doesnt really do reviews, its more like throughout playthroughs
still fucking enjoyable to watch
Which is funny because I would say he did a better job at reviewing it than Gman.
What I'm most excited about is the fact it can be modded, and it's familiar ground already. Also with DUSK's map editor getting released; it looks like some cool mods could be about in the near future!
"There's no super powerful weapon that empties an entire room of bad guys in a single hit"
*Literally 20 seconds later, shows Clusterpuck clearing out an entire room of bad guys in a single explosion*
Quips aside, you mentioned you are beginning to dislike and burn out on these throwback FPS games. But you also gotta realise that with your platform, YOU are part of the problem. YOU praised Nightmare Reaper, which is the embodiment of mediocrity. Bad pixel art, randomly generated levels, roguelike because why not, hundreds of weapons that are more quantity over quality, an upgrade system (you know, like in Doom and Duke Nukem), and even a bad Mario-esque minigame because that's what's retro, right? And when you think of good oldschool FPS game, whose mind immediately goes to Wolfenstein 3D? That's one of the most poorly aged shooters! I'd have expected you to have torn that game to shreds, but you loved it? It's not a bad game, but it's really nothing more than "alright" in my opinion. And even though it has all these generic and uninspired gameplay elements, you praised it for no end.
And that's exactly what creates all these "throwback shooters", because people see that they do well, and then they try to emulate them. If people didn't keep buying and reviewers didn't keep praising them, then they wouldn't be so popular. If you had just gone "Well, it's an alright game but we really don't need another throwback FPS", then that would have at least sort of killed the unnecessary hype for these types of games. You even constantly criticized this game's shortcomings, but then you *still* go "Yeah but you gotta buy it". Why? If it's something you dislike, then why would you say that? You're the poster child for retro FPS titles, so if you keep recommending mediocrity and bandwagons, that's exactly what you will keep getting.
Also, while Andrew Hulshult's music is great, it's also greatly overrated and all of those games' soundtracks just blur together because EVERYONE uses his stuff. Hire someone new for once.
P.S.: No offense to the devs of Nightmare reaper, what you did was pretty impressive and you can certainly be proud of it, but in my opinion it's just "alright". That's not a bad thing at all though, it's just nothing groundbreaking or mindblowing.
is it because nightmare reaper is made by a single dev? he is more critical towards ion fury because there is a whole team behind it?
@@LeFaucheur Doesn't matter. The outcome is the same, and he still praised mediocrity over a game that has way more promise to it. He can't complain about throwback shooters all being the same if that's what he says people should buy.
@@GermanPeter I haven't tried it so can't judge much, but I wonder how it got so much attention, especially when many people don't like the graphics style (it used to be especially hard to look at. got a bit better) I'm working on my own FPS game and I barely get any attention, but maybe it's not good.
Opinions change over time, Peter. As a kid I used to think hotdogs were the best food ever, now I don't like them as much. Amazing, right?
@@Gggmanlives That didn't even address what I was talking about, but alright.
