    Personally I have been really pleased with this three phased motor setup. It is a 1.5kW motor. What the VFD does is first converts the input AC (in my case single phase 220V) into DC and then internally that DC into three phased AC (400V). There are simular controllers which take three phase AC in as well (400V).
    Compared to the original setup this is superb. The torque on low speed is good and there is enough rpm for small diameters as well. The only issue is that with this motor I start noticing that the frame is not very sturdy so I cannot even use the full power of the motor setup. But that is something I have no problem living with.
    And I'm sorry I did not realize the first question earlier. I hope the answer clarifies and it is not too late - propably is..

      @@alexeinuville2555 You mean switch direction of rotation? Yes, that is part of the magic the controller provides by default. The one I have is truly flexible but I would assume that feature is available in most vfd’s.

    I am amazed to find this, insamuch as I have been going NUTS trying to find the details on converting my old wood lathe, which has a single phase AC motor, that I have tried three of the oh, yeah, this works on anything crap, to a DC Chinese motor (one of the big blue ones) that they DO make speed controllers for.
    ...and I find this guy doing just the opposite...

    Very good job, thank you ! I am doing the same tranformation on Bernardo profi 700.
    Just a couple of question: how did you connect the e-card to the vfd to start simultaneously with the motor ?
    And what about the switch off when you open the protection cover ?
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Greetings from Italy

      I simply have an external master power switch for the entity. Vfd and ecard are both powered from the same master switch but they are parallel and independed as such.
      For safety I’m using the original protection cover switch but it is now connected to one of the low voltage circuits of the vfd. Vfd is configured to stop when that circuit breaks.

    what is really nice, other than the chinese lathe, is the tachometer, on spindle speed. with a normal vfo, if you get rpm, it is motor rpm, which does not equate to anything on the lathe, without a chart. You can build a large chart, then read out the vfo I suppose. good job.

    • @JaakkoF
      @JaakkoF 7 років тому

      On most VFDs there is a parameter that you can change to select what is displayed. Usually there is an option "line speed" or "shaft speed" and another parameter to set a multiplier. This way if you have just one gear ratio from motor to spindle, you get the actual RPM displayed on the VFD.

    If a single-phase VFD is used, the 3-phase motor must be connected to the delta to have its nominal power. Because the VFD output is only 3x230V max.

    Nice. Please tell me which size pulleys you use? I have smaller 240 version of this lathe. I want to fit a 1.5kw 6 pole, 940rpm motor, I think it will be easier to get good speeds. 1:1 or 2:1. The motor is tooo long, 100L frame, so it will go through chip tray. 1.1kw will be shorter. What do you think best? Thanks

    • @eE48v
      @eE48v  5 років тому +1

      Mark E , Unfortunately I don’t remember what I ended up with but I did calculate it to match roughly the original ratio. It worked out good and I get about same top rpm as with the original. I also had to cut away and box about 5cm dent to the chip tray. Does not matter though as it is still well away of the chuck surface. Motorwise I think both will do fine as the next issue of frame starting to flex/vibrate before running out of power, will be there, with either.

    According to your video it seems that you have connected the motor in star configuration. Normally it should be delta connection. Have you tried Delta?

    very interesting and great work!! Couldn't you have mounted the inverter directly on the lathe to have the controls close at hand?

    • @eE48v
      @eE48v  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. I actually changed it later so that I attached a plywood board behind the splash guard and inverter is now same package with the rest of the lathe. Roughly in the same location though. It is actually quite handy to have the speed nob on the right away from the spinning parts. I also still have the standard safety switches hooked into the spindle guard so it is no less safe either.

    Your inverter doesn't produce 400 volts on each of its three output legs or phases. Each phase developed 240 volts relative to neutral or earth ( zero). The 400 volt potential is a transient value between any two phases as the out of scyn wave forms interact. The 400 volt is actually an RMS value of about 415 volts if the output legs (or phases) are balanced. The true behaviour of this supply system is clouded or masked as American consumers try to explain to each other how come they have "two phase" power in their homes. They confuse a LEG with a PHASE .
    To really explain the system you need to start at the power lines in the street and not at the domestic service pole.
    Stavros

    • @eE48v
      @eE48v  3 роки тому +1

      Yep. You are right. I have not actually measured the delta between the phases going to the motor nor am I an expert on how inverters actually work. I have been assuming that even if the inverter only takes 240V in, it can do a 120 degree phase shift for phases using roughly that maximum voltage (when messured against ground) and thus achieve a maximum voltage difference of 400V between two phases (one phase being on positive side and the other on negative side).

    • @eE48v
      @eE48v  3 роки тому

      Had to check still. This is the exact VFD I’m using: inverterdrive.com/group/AC-Inverter-Drives-230V/ABB-ACS150-01E-07A5-2/. If I understand the spec correctly it does indeed produce 3x230V maximum voltage and thus also the maximum voltage delta between phases is that 400V.
