Sony A90J - Should You Buy it? - XR83A90J

- The Sony BRAVIA XR A90J 4K HDR OLED with Smart Google TV is one of the best TVs ever made. The 83" XR83A90J is the first OLED in the USA to have a heatsink, HDMI 2.1 gaming, and pushes over 1000 nits. But do these upgrades justify the cost for this Master Series OLED? I'll offer the top 4 features as well as differences from the smaller sizes and then I'll show SDR, HDR and gaming content before making buying recommendations that include the LG C1, LG C1, Samsung QN90a, and the Sony A80J. #XR83A90J #A90J

Hey B, has any one ever told you that you look like Kurt Russell?
@@davidross7255 YOU MEAN KURT RUSSELL SON...LOL
Yes. A young Kurt Russell. He was a bad ass back then. Love it.
Do you think the tv is worth the 6 thousand price tag its at now and are you still happy with it.
B can you please answer me this as I am ordering one today. Does the screen dim while watching NFL football?
I downsized. Yep, went from a 5 year old poorly performing 86” LG to this, the A90J 83”. Love it. Night and day pic quality.
I wouldn't even consider that downsizing. You climbed up the ladder with that purchase.
@@michaelwyckoff7593 defo agree can't go wrong
Man I really want that 83 A90J. I'll have to wait for a discount. 8k is too much.
YOU WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND WITH THE SONY BRAVIA XR OLED A90J 83" I JUST HOPE YOU BOUGHT SUNGLASSES 😎🤑😎
And that LG was a LED i guess? Nice comparison
Buying a TV for a new house and this has been the most helpful video. Couldn’t justify the A90J 83” cost really appreciate this video.
I have had the 77 inch a80j for 2 months now. It's unreal and everytime I turn it on I'm amazed at the pic.
Finally got delivery of my 85” QN90A last week, and I am completely happy with my choice. Yes, I know the OLEDs would have had a marginally better picture, but for $3599 vs $6k or $8k, I couldn’t make it make sense. Something I haven’t seen anyone talk about yet: if you pair the QN90A with a Qn950a soundbar, the tv just recognizes the inputs and treats them as native, using the same remote and UI as the TV. Pretty neat. Keep up the great work, Brandon. 👍🏼
I just got my 83 A90J on Friday. Last time I bought a TV was a non-HDR midrange LED 2015. What an upgrade. The only thing is I wish it was even bigger. I love all the details and the blacks are unreal.
I want one!
I really enjoy your reviews and paid for an A80J recently. Thanks B.
Love my 83" A90J. Best TV purchase I've ever made. Beautiful picture!!
Excellent Presentation. Thanks for taking the time and posting.
You’re production quality is killer lately. One of the best on UA-cam at this point.
True…. all true my friend. B is the man
Thanks guys. Not perfect, but I if I don't feel like I would watch it, I keep adding more to it.
@@BTheInstaller brotha you have great videos and great comparisons sometimes it's hard to truely tell what the color is like due to exposure but other then that it's incredible man
@@reviewforthetube6485 appreciated. It's not easy to get tvs to look good on tvs.. trust me. I spend hours reshooting some footage. I'll be back in action with the x95j in a couple weeks.
@@BTheInstaller nice man I can't wait to see it 🙌 but yeah man it cna be tough getting everything just right Im sure I'm so hoping the x95j is better then some are thinking because I know alot of people that were waiting on it lol
Thanks for the review, with so many options out here knowing what's good and what isn't. This was helpful.
Really appreciate your review, it is very nicely put and easy to digest. You're also not accusing others of shilling for a brand to sound more "honest".
Great breakdown B. It's hard to beat the value proposition of the A80J
Appreciate the footage with all four TVs too!
Thanks for sharing BTI, i like your content and wise reviews
I just bought this model and I am more than happy with the choice👍 100% recommended
Thanks for the video😍83inch A90J is spectacular 🤯
More Jen please, thank you. I tip my hat to you brother! Really well done review too.
The $8,000 price tag is asking a lot for most people including myself. I'm sure it is an absolutely amazing tv though. The new XR processor is doing great things for the new oled line including the A80J. Thanks for the video!!
Always expensive on release. Wait til the new model comes out and grab last years model at a steep discount.
Wonderful video b.. from 1/2 of "Pass the Remote" 🙂😁
Why thank you Brandon. 😊
just got the 65" A80J and its awesome!
Nice review keep up the good work
Yep it was super popular because of Jen. Checked it out and the display was incredible. :)
Great job as always bro!
Thanks. You're too kind. Yanks implosion in 8th inning today. Wow.
Awesome review B def one of my favorites for sure. You are getting so technical in your reviews. I may go out of my way and say your reviews are becoming my favorites.
I mean whenever you get 180 likes within this amount of time and 0 dislikes you are doing something right.
I currently own Sony A9G 65in, A90J 83in will be the next OLED upgrade, I will wait however until it's $6500-$7000, I also have my mind on Sony Z9J 85in, I'm looking to upgrade my Sony Z9D, thanks for sharing a descriptive vlog of Sony A90J, can't wait to see the side by side comparison with LG C1!
Thanks for keeping it real. For most people the A90J just isn't in the budget. It is a stunning TV tho.
Awesome video better advice!! Your on fire brother…. LOVE IT!!!!
Great work and thank you 😌👍🏾🏆
Thank you for being honest about oled motion when streaming sports, it's probably one of t he most watched among men, in fact I don't have have a blue ray player and all my content is streamed.
Thanks for the video information review
Pretty awesome review B, that TV is huge...in person looks even bigger and the picture is amazing.!!
#ENORMOUS #MASTERPIECE
Had the A90J took back and got the A80J, they pretty much are the same for a lot less! It's a bit brighter but boy the A80J is better built and has the same look, save money like I did and I am so happy i did.
What size did you have?
The A80J is not "better built" than the A90J. Physically they're very similar.
Sorry but it’s not better built,
The A80J has some aestetics i like better.. the metal edge around all sizes... the back is the cooler square edges like the A9G and A8H.. the A90J has the glass edge and the better feet and the more LED like Bravia looks. They're very different but I can't say I like one better than the other.
Great review B!
Great Video love the channel. Only problem I have is when asking $2,000.00 over the next competitor, this tv should do everything great. All set to purchase but the motion on fast sports it making me stop. Hope to talk with you on the next live feed. Keep up the great work
I picked up 77” A80J last week and I’ve become a couch potato since.. the image is amazing and the Dolby sound makes it come full circle…
Congratulations, B. It seems your a90j won the shootout from value electronics. I can't afford the 83 inch but I'm sure thinking more about the 77 inch A80J for gaming and movies.
Nick
I was lucky enough to get one from the first batch of 83" A90J's, and I haven't looked back. It's hands down the best television I've owned.
Hey man as someone who waited for a price drop and is awaiting delivery of an 83” A90J this week, is there a difference between first batch and the ones they’re sending out now? 👀
@@stevenrodriguez9655 That I can't tell you. I haven't done any comparisons to any other A90J.
Yes if price does not matter go for the A90J
Hi! Thanks for all the great content! I have a small room with no windows 14*12*8 where I am planning to put an 83 inch A90J. Considering the size of the room, and a total budget of around 7-8k which soundbar would you recommend I pair it with? Thanks!
Great job B... I say but the 77" A80J and pair it up with a SVS ULTRA Speaker 5.1 setup with the money that was saved.
Thanks for sharing, too big for any room in my house 😞 currently looking at the 65" model
Just bought the 65" lg oled wx on a 55% sale that was o around the same price as a 65" c1 or 80j
Thanks bud, 👍 i appreciate the tip and trust your experience with OLED's, what you think about the Philips OLED 806
(2021 model)
with P5 processor & Ambilight ?
Great review, as i always thought the 77a80j is he second choice to the best Oled TV there is (83a90j)!
Love the reviews and straight talk. But let me ask if you could get any tv in 2021 forget price forget gimmicks what tv would it be. I know the sony is expensive but there are tv's out there for a lot more and some have poor reviews. What would be your one tv to rule them all
Perfect Review
As usual amazing video. I’m sure a lot of viewers are asking you these questions. I currently have a A1E 55 and I’m thinking about upgrading to 65. A80j or 90j, I’m a movie guy so it’s mainly for this but I heard that the 90J have washed shadows and less volumetric image compare to 80J. Would you upgrade or wait another year ? Thx and keep up the good content👍🏻
In a 55 or 65 inch size I would pick the A80. I think it’s only in the largest sizes that the specular highlight differences really stand out.
What a great review.
I had one. It only lasted 2 years. It's a good thing I had the top warranty on it.
I like your Intro, my friend
My opinion is if you can afford this tv then you aren’t debating whether to buy it or not
I can afford the a90j but prefer the picture of a80j... why?.. the a80j just seems to have more depth which makes it pop more overall. I first noticed this on ''Sony A90J vs A80J - 2021 XR Bravia OLED Comparison'' by 'Tech with KG' But also noticed on other videos.
I think the a90js extra brightness is sacrificing overall detail at times for specular HDR highlights, which can be noticeably better than a80j..but overall the a80js picture just has more depth and it bothers me that the a90j doesn't have both for the price they are asking. I would rather buy the a80j based off what ive seen so far.. maybe im crazy and its all in my head LOL.. idk...
@@BipBopBoopBopBam Bro, if you buy the a90j from value electronics and have them calibrate it, you will get the same depth on the a90j, but with better brightness.
@@BipBopBoopBopBam after having owned both 55 inch versions of the a90j and a80j the a90j smoked the a80j easily. I can't speak to the larger sizes but just between those 2 the a90j was in a different league
@@trinitycob6617 Absolutely.
@@BipBopBoopBopBam I could’ve basically wrote the exact same comment! I noticed the picture on the A80J seemed like a “better” overall picture to me as well in several comparison videos for the same reason you mentioned. I’m very happy with my 77” A80J!
83” wouldn’t fit in my space and 65” was too small for me, so an A90J was out of the picture for me. I opted for the 77” A80J and it’s amazing! I might be missing some of the bright highlights that the A90J can push, but it doesn’t stand out to me because I don’t have the 2 TVs side-by-side. You sold me on the A80J, so thanks, B!
Absolutely. 77" A80J is such a good deal for that quality tv.
@@BTheInstaller I was also able to find it for under $3,100 out the door, so it made it $680 less than it would be from a vendor at $3,498 plus tax, so I just couldn’t turn it down!
Excellent review. Cost is somewhat a factor. So if you wanted your first OLED TV, you sit about 10 ft. away, you’re not a gamer, you have some vision issues, and your room has tall windows with coverings and some smaller upper windows without coverings: would you buy the Sony A80J 77”, or the A90J 65”, since they’re close in price, or something else altogether? Oh. I have a Bose soundbar and I am a grandma, if that’s a factor. 😅
Digital Trends just got the TCL 8k in for review. Looks promising.
Great video! Next TV will be a OLED.
From my point of view you can do less live QA, save your energy for your own videos.
If you do live, do it with max 2 participants.
When you are 3 or more the focus and energy goes down.
I’m more into intimate conversations between you and your guest.
Hey Bud, I prolly should comment on the a90j settings video...but I'm busy watching this one :p Do you happen to have the settings written down somewhere so I can plug them in easier? Thanks!
Hi b the installer been watching your videos for a while just the other day I pulled the trigger on a 55 in Sony ah8 at Best buy for $1, 099 . Just wanted to have your advice on what sound bar would you go with would you wait for the bose 900 soundbar or Sono arc or is there a Sony sound bar that compares to both of them?? Also what new HDMI cable would you recommend getting for the new TV thanks a lot and I'll keep watching
B, your best video yet. Great production value. Keep up the excellent work. Thumbs up
Planing on a Sony A90 J 65 inch. Not a large living room with high ceilings. Keep looking at the Sony HT 7000 with the bigger sub but, for close to the same price can buy two towers like B&W, a AVS Sub use the TV as the center and decent receiver like Marantz. Thoughts?
Hey brotha wanted to tell you man you need to use film mode for 24p content and for broadcast like soccer and things set it to low then use the motion settings you want to and boom absolutely insanely good motion
Without the cap, you remind me of Carl Fredricksen from Up
Hello. Love your channel. I wanted to ask if the A90J would be a better buy at $4799 at Best Buy vs the LGs
Nice video man where’s the pug!?
Great video, full of useful information. The A90J looks awesome and will probably be my next TV. I have just one question, though. Would the addition of a soundbar (e.g. Sonos Arc) and sub-woofer be worth it? Thanks.
Soundbar and sub is always going to be better than ANY tv speakers.. I have the sonos arc with surrounds and sub gen 3 and it's AMAZING, watching movies takes it to another level.. even more
@@ibby.hussain_ Thank you for your reply. Keep up the good work!
Hello Brandon 👋🏼. Sending my respect from the UK 🇬🇧. I'm thinking of buying an LG G1 65inch. My seating arrangements are 6.5 ft away. Is that too close or am I safe? At the moment I have a 55inch LG C9. So I will be upgrading soon. Let me know please. Thank you very much. 👍🏻
It's interesting to me how so many people do an "aside" comment about issues with this TVs motion handling, but still rate it so high. I'm guessing when the fix comes out in the next generation that'll be the reason to upgrade?
I know most people review smaller sizes, but since your doing 83 inch OLEDS 😆 I figured alot of people might be interested in a review of the 85 inch QN85A which comes with the VA panel instead of the IDS Panel. Just saying I think it would get a lot of views and people can know more options at that size.
I'm sure it's great. I have a lot going on now but, if it had the VA, it's probably nearly same as 90A
Brandon, I think the A90J is both: something that I am considering buying, and it's a ridiculous price. However, on the latter, I am prepared to wait until it comes down a bit; especially as the LG 83" C1 is likely to create good competition to hopefully cause Sony to lower the price of the A90J much further 🤪
Good thing you (we) waited!
Good call
I work in home repair and a good customer bought a new house with this TV in it that was on a swinging wall mount. He wanted $1,200 for it and the mount but I didn't NEED it. A couple days later, he offered to sell it to me for $800. Couldn't pass that up. So now I have a way better TV than I would have ever bought... Haha
@@foroursinsbrand7033damn it was an 83 inch a90j?
B bro OK hear me out man. You should try to get an 85 in QN85A and review it. I have a feeling that tv may be one of the best 85 inch tvs out there that no one is really talking about because that tv has a VA panel.
I watched your review of the A90J 83"..on my A90J 83".
Good review. I wanted the best I could get. All good points comparing to the LG 83". The final straw was no HBOmax on LG. Petty maybe, but I didn't want to have to launch another device (that would also need firmware updates) just to watch shows on HBOmax.
I heard you can put Mexico as country and it will download HBO max... haven't tried it tho
If you get a chance. Test a Samsung, LG using patch cable vs Wi-Fi with the Netflix network connection. It was disappointing to find out the $8000 Sony only has a 100Mb NIC not 1Gb. Wi-Fi is faster.
@@BTheInstaller Hello sir, thanks for all your vids. I finally got a video up of our DIY theater using some of your techniques.
Bro, that's the first time I see you without the hat. I had to double check if that's the same channel lol
Great video - can I ask you this question, Here in March 2023, this 83 inch Sony A90J is only $4,499. We purchased a 77 inch LG G2 from Best Buy 6 weeks ago for $3,399 and it comes with a 5 year warranty (but not for burn in) but I could enjoy the 83 inch in our space on the wall. My wife doesn't like the Magic remote (no backlight and the arrow cursor annoys her) So our choice is to stick with this TV (and I do love the brightness) and maybe get an upgraded remote in the future or buy this Sony A90J - Also keep in mind we do not play any games on the tv. We mainly watch sports, news, cable tv shows, HBO movies, and will start streaming Netflix soon. It's just the two of us at almost 60 years old. We know we want an OLED panel - but it feels weird to buy this Sony with 2 year old technology. Also, we have a new wonderful Sonos Arc, subwoofer, & a pair on One SL's for fantastic surround sound, so the TV speakers will be turned off. So what do you think is the right choice ??? I would really value your opinion. Thank you in advance !
Guy
I just bought the Sony 90 J with a Sonos sound bar and a subwoofer and also bought the Panasonic UB 9000 Blu-ray DVD DHX player!
Goals
This was a great review. Well done. One question though.... In your opinion does the A90J get bright enough for sports? That's one of my concerns with OLEDS.
Yeah, I think people complain about full screen brightness for sports. I "love" my oleds for sports, hockey, soccer... NFL is mainly my sport... all look amazing. Your source is the problem with them but if you can keep direct window reflection off the tv, you'd be fine. But some like the blinding brightness of LED, I just prefer the true black ⚫ of oled so it's like 50/50 for sports but movies and gaming OLED look way better.
@@BTheInstaller Thanks B. for your work and advice. Ahhhhh I’m pulling my hair out LOL. I love the picture quality on the A90J and this would be the absolute showstopper for my living room for the family, guests, etc… but I have a large window opposite of where the TV would go and I just don’t have another option for placement of the display the way our living room is set up/constructed. Thanks again.
I have the 65inch A90J which is incredible, and is the first ever OLED TV I have owned. Would have I bought a larger size? No, because my A90J fits in my small bedroom wall. Any bigger and it would devour me whole while viewing it eating my popcorn!
Cool😮😊
Wow SONY BRAVIA 83" 4K OLED TV
SO GOOD 💪
The A90J looks amazing but it'll be the 77" A80J for me really soon. I think in a week or two I'll be pulling the trigger
I think a80j is better value to be honest
Hey David, you’ve made up your mind! I look forward to your impressions as I am still waffling between the 77” A80J and the C1. I’ll probably “waffle” all the way towards waiting to see what 2022 will offer! 😂
@@sonnyrichards2121 yup I've finally made up my mind. Lol. I'm a PlayStation player so I don't really need the extra gaming features of the C1 or G1 so I think that makes it easy to go with the Sony. I also want the better picture. Just waiting till my tile floors are done then I'm making the purchase. Still contemplating on the 5 year geek squad warranty from best buy. It's expensive and ends up being a waste of $749 if I don't need to use it so I got a little thinking to do about that for the next week or two.
Oh yeah!
@@dave2094 I've always been a Sony gamer that's why I've been holding out for the 95j for months now cause my 900e bit the dust 2 weeks ago....but after seeing early reviews of the 95j and worries about burn in with gaming I ended up pulling the trigger on the qn90a 75in last night.
B how is the a80js brightness compared to the a90s brightness watching hdr movies? Is it a huge difference
If I watch a lot of hdr movies and play a lot of hdr games on the ps5 do you recommend keeping the a90j 65 or going for the bigger screen in the a80j? I love the extra brightness pop but not sure if it’s a big difference from the a80j
Just ordered the 83in A90J for a huge early black friday deal. What's the wall mount you used? Wanted to get the ultra flush mount Sony SU-WL855 but it states that it only supports models up to 77in. Do you know if there's is an ultra slim mount that will support this size TV?
It's far too expensive for me so I would take the "LG-Road" and bee happy with a tiny 77", as I have, so I can play with perfect result also.
I am hearing impaired and to avoid arguments with my wife, she listens through the tv speakers (Panasonic Plasma) and I route TV RCA audio output to a Sony receiver and hook up wired earphones. I now can independently control volume. As far as I can tell the LG C1 has settings to allow TV to output speaker sound and audio out at same time. But I don't think the Sony A80J allows this. I am leaning to the Sony but this one feature is critical. Can you confirm one way or another? thx much
Are you planning to get z9j comparison with zh8 or ZG9.. Do you think Sony has nailed it this year with Oled although 4K FLAD is unclear at the moment . Have they also nailed the 8K this time ? ZH8 was good value buy .
Just cancelled my order for the 65 inch QN90A and placed an order for the A90J 65 - and saved 800$ by buying it on Ebay
Would using the Sanus Pedestal Table Mount work for the 55" model? The legs at the edge for the 55" will not work for our stand. Thanks
Hey B the installer if some people can afford to buy the A90J 83 inch it's a good thing. Who wouldn't want to own a TV like that?
Great video. Better to get the A80J and spend the rest on surround system. Why have this beast of a tv, great picture and no sound. Sound should match the picture quality.
well, you pretty much safe the money for a center speaker with the A90J though, since it can act like one. price of a really good Center speaker around ~500 $.
You can’t convince me not accept that beautiful tv from you 😜. I’ll take one for the team, and take the tv off your hands 😎
What would you use for a stand if you didn't want to wall mount an LG G1?
Hey B you need to use fim mode high for 24p content with sports no issues after that alot of people aren't using film mode and they should be in the settings 80 percent of peoppe I talk to don't don't know about FILM mode for sony it's made for 24p content with motion
I have the LG 77" CX from last year in my cinema room. I'm looking at both 83" sets from Sony and LG but will probably go for LG again. A slightly inferior picture quality but with VRR better for gaming and 4x HDMI 2.1 ports as opposed to Sony's 2. Cheaper too! Sony keep saying that VRR is coming but their 2020 model is stiill waiting for that update!
I wish I had room for it 83 inch EVO panel looks better on A90J then it does on G1.
B, now that the A90J price is under $6k, is it the best TV you recommend buying now?
Without comparing the upscaler to Nvidia Shield device it's really hard to know how good it is
For my games, I ordered the 55 inch AJ90. It won’t arrive until 12/21. I thought about the 65 inch, but that’s too big for me regarding video games! I don’t wanna sit 5 miles back! If it’s good, I’ll save for the 83 inch as my main. That’s if nothing else comes out! As of right now, you all can have the QLED and Neo QLED! Numerous complaints over dse and blooming! Another factor is Samsung’s customer service is horrible! Everyone I’ve come across got accused of somehow damaging their own set! They even had difficulty when discussing the warranty!
How is the ABL when watching hockey?
@B the instaler i just bought a 65" lg oled wx for around the same price of a 65" c1 or 80j. Is last year model but te design and better sound and build seemd like a good idea. Was i rigth? Do you have any w series oled review on your channel?
I couldn't be sure. Thr A80J is a really good tv.
i really want a "75" tv so its upsetting the a90j isnt that size as well... however considering that size i am now looking at the a80j or the z9j which i know is an lcd tv and expensive but honestly cant figure out which one i should get
So is it worth buying the A90J now ? I can get a decent price on it, however Sony has the A95k out now which is supposed to be an upgrade but the largest size is 65" and I'm partial to the 83". I have read several reviews on the A90J that say it is very good for gaming now the VRR has dropped. It also pairs very well with the PS5 which is no surprise and I'm hoping to find a TVthat does both video content and gaming equally well.
YOU WILL BE TESTING TCL C825 MINILED???
My question would be, if i choose to buy the a90j or a80j do i need to spend another$600 to get them calibrated, or should my personal visual preference work with adjusting the tv settings?
