Dr. Lee, I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to create these very informative videos. Question: I was in that few percent whose (mis)calculated correction left me very farsighted in my right eye. It has been fixed, but is there anything a patient can do to lessen the chances of a poor outcome? Are there clues a patient can/should pass along to the surgeon to alert them to possible, unusual conditions that might warrant the use of alternate measurements/models or other?
I could not wear contacts for myopia in high school because they did not have them "flat enough" for my eyes, but it never occurred to me to tell that to the first, right eye, doctor. Could that information have helped to avoid the miscalculation? (The left eye surgeon used a laser interferometer during surgery to correct his manual calculations and all went to plan. I now have rather extreme, but livable, monovision. ) Thank you.
Thanks for sharing, and I am sorry that you had issues with your lens power. While our calculations are mostly spot-on, there are cases like very long and short eyes, after refractive surgery like RK, PRK, LASIK, and with certain eye conditions where we just can’t guarantee a perfect refractive outcome. It sounds like you were very near-sighted so you most likely has a long eye.
Have you discussed refractive options with your doctor? I hope that you are eventually able to achieve the vision you want!
@@MicheleLeeMD Yes, we have discussed 1) exchange; he gave me >10% odds of a serious issue, top of which could be corneal decompensation. (Plus the right eye had an episode of Amorosa fugax after the initial surgery.)
And 2) corneal modification with only minor improvement, and a 1%-ish chance of complications. He's a university researcher/prof and those odds only apply if HE does the surgery. (His frankness reminds me of my little brother who's a prof/researcher and reconstructive surgeon.)
The risk/return is not there for either procedure. So outside of giving up my private pilot's license, I am functioning OK with glasses.

Hi Dr.Lee thanks for your videos very helpful..I have to do cataract surgery but nervous can lie on my back flat without pillow..Iam 68years living in Trinidad. In the Caribbean
Thank you for sharing. It is normal to be anxious. If you have difficulty lying on your back without a pillow, your surgeon and their staff should be able to work with you so that your head and eye are in the correct position without causing pain or strain on your neck or back. Best of luck!

Multifocal lenses can be a great option to get you independent from glasses. The big issue is that you will have a little bit of glare at night and if that is going to bother you I would not advise on the lens.

Could you possibly be able to do a video of You Performing A Cataract Surgery on a patient in your Operation Room using the
1) Conventional or Pharcoemulsification, and the
2) Femtosecond laser-assisted Cataract Surgery ?
I'd love to and in the past I've tried to post surgical videos. Unfortunately, I get a strke on UA-cam for including surgery and surgical clips so I had to take them down. You can watch some great animated surgery videos on UA-cam to get a sense of the surgery!

As I watch TV all the time I see lots of Commercials and quick flashes micro
second after second, and avoid tv with palm of hand because it bothers me.
Are these flashes damaging just my eyes or its normal for all ? I'm 75 years old.
From what we know these flashes should not damage your eyes, but of course with new symptoms please let your eye doctor know!
Hi Dr Lee, I had radial keratotomy back in the late 80's.
I am 67 now, and need reasonably good near vision as I am still working full time in IT.
I have cataract (worse in left eye) and will be having cataract surgery soon.
What are my options please ?

Hi there, it really depends on a few factors like how regular the shape of your cornea is. I would either recommend a standard lens or a light-adjustable lens, and stay away from multifocal or EDOF lenses. Talk to your doctor about what would be best for your specific situation. Best of luck!

My son 4 year old got traumatic cataract last week in his left eye. Now need for surgery so please guide me..which lens will be good for him ...and if cataract is not affecting dat much..though need surgery or can wait ?
I'm so sorry your son got a traumatic cataract :( I would talk to your eye doctor about whether the cataract is bad enough to have it removed. If your son is 4 years old, his visual system is still developing and depending on the amount of cataract it may be wise to not delay removal for too long.

I have cataracts and have been using glasses for the last few years. My eye Dr. Has said I will need lens replacement at some point. I'm wondering if the cataracts can be removed without lens replacement or does the cataract stick to the lens, thus requiring the removal of both?
You will probably want a lens to replace your cataract otherwise you will not be able to see. The lens inside your eye actually has a lot of refracting power and when taken away without a replacement you will most likely not see much. Best of Iuck!

@@devinwaggoner702 The cataract is the lens that is already inside the eye that has gotten cloudy so if we remove the cataract we are removing the lens.
