I recommend that everyone looks into how to prevent cataracts, or at least delay them. Reduced sugar and carbs in your diet, taking a vision supplement pill, and eating unsweetened pineapple. Also wear sunglasses outside. For me, watching the Fadiman video about micro dosing magic mushrooms also improved my 63 years old vision with everything looking brighter and clearer, possibly delaying cataract surgery. The mushroom spores are legal to mail anywhere in the US because they have no psylocybin yet. Oregon and Colorado have made magic mushrooms legal for a doctor to add to possible treatment options.

This is Dr Lee's 3rd YT I've listened to today. Before I retired, I worked for an optician in an ophthalmology office. Dr Lee's YTs are excellent & even tho I worked in an eye doctors' office, I have learned a great deal from her. I've got upcoming surgeries for Fuchs and for cataracts and intend to follow her advice.

Last year my optometrist said I would need cataract surgery but decided to wait due to covid. I asked my primary care doctor for a recommendation (he had his cataracts removed in his 50s). My ophthalmologist has performed over 5K cataract surgeries which I think is a large number for a small city with a population of 30K. There are only two ophthalmologists in our county with a population of 120K.

@@MicheleLeeMD I had the surgery on my right eye. I was not awake during the procedure. I woke up with my eye covered but never felt any pain. The next morning after removing the eye cover my vision is amazing. It's like the difference between an old CRT type TV and a flat panel HDTV. Good nighttime contrast and no halo/glare. My brain somehow combines the old and new eye images into a sharp image. The Clareon Vivity is a great lens. Next surgery in 3 weeks.

I had an optometrist refer me to the clinic I am going to for the last 8 years. He stated that since I was developing cataracts that he could still provide care for me but eventually I would have to go to see the ophthalmologist there anyway and his clinic was closing due to the mall he was in was closing. That was best move he ever made for my care. I had the same ophthalmologist for the past 8 years and in December of last year the cataracts finally came to the stage that I had the operations. I think the best phrase I had was I was in for the 2nd operation and my ophthalmologist came up to me to make sure I knew what going on and my last words before he operated on my eye was "Lets rock and roll this". He said that it made him remember me more than most of his other patients that I had a sense of humor even flat on my back.
The model used in the clinic I go to is the ophthalmologist is supervising several optometrists and I had the same optometrists for the past 8 years and then the ophthalmologist checks the eyes after the vision tests.

I had a bad experience with a surgeon. I couldn't afford laser surgery but a good friend offered to pay. When I went to the clinic to tell them that I now can get the laser I was told that I had to see the doctor. So I made an appointment. When he saw me he yelled at me saying "What are you doing here again?!" I told him and he was totally belligerent. I walked out on him but because I delayed I lost my friend's offer to pay and later had to get conventional surgery.

My question is: how do we hear about the mistakes a doctor makes? What if a doc makes a mistake and does damage to an eye? I know that during the learning process we of course make mistakes, but most of those mistake are fixable. Does this mean that if a doc goes thru all the training and schooling he or she won't make a mistake? Give me some security that any doctor will do a great job... Dr. Lee from what you have been saying i would choose your skills at this time, but you seem to young to have great skills, hahaha

I appreciate the compliment - I'm pretty sure I'm older than I look, but I don't mind being called young :)
Most ophthalmologist are more than qualified and will do a great job with your surgery. It's hard to know for sure if you are getting a "good" surgeon or not, which is why my last tip about trusting providers who refer a lot to ophthalmologists is key to find out who is ethical, careful, experienced, etc.

I live in an area where pretty much all of the surgeons belong to a single group of doctors. From talking to some of their patients, I get the impression that they pretty much have an assembly line type of operation. They stack up their patients on certain days of the week. They all seem to have positive reviews from patients and online. The doctor that I visit says he does about 15 surgeries a week. I like the idea that he has a bunch of experience, but don’t like the idea that when I get my surgery, he will not even know who I am.

I remember earlier this year there were concerns over me possibly having a detachment. and the doc wanted to rush into surgery without me getting a second opinion. Hi Dr. Lee, I recently moved and went to see a new eye doctor about cataract surgery at a friend’s recommendation. Turns out, he no longer performs surgery and recommended another doctor in his practice.
While talking to the initial doctor, I realized I may have more issues than most people.
    I have:
    1) astigmatism in both eyes,
    2) recurrent corneal erosion,
    3) my eyes water whenever I go outside (sunny or not),
    4) pollen makes my eyes itchy and irritated, AND
    5) abnormal saccades (from a traumatic brain injury in 2009)
Would you mind telling me what I should look for in a cataract surgeon? I am 65.
    Thank you

I have a cataract in one eye. In 1999 I had RK surgery to correct mostly astigmatism This right eye was touched up 2 more times at a bottom arc. Now besides the cataract I have astigmatism, basically a pyramid of three images. My university cataract center gave little information and made no mention of special lenses or post op vision. A second practice said RK made cornea unstable and wanted me to see a specialist to “freeze” my cornea. They suggested two toric lenses. I am not sure where to proceed. Probably look for a third place. Any comments?

I need cataract surgery, and I have no worries about the procedure, but I can't jump in the pool. I need help. I am petrified about possible sales pressure from the onset. For instance, once an initial consultation is complete, I might get pressure and confusion. If that materializes, I would like the option to have a 2nd opinion, but that would result in a significant cost. And that is only the first stage in this whole process where additional fees can be added. How can I find out what I might be in for financially?

I am about to have my right eye cataract removed.
I've had Mono vision glasses for years and before
that for years wore only one contact lens in the
    right eye.
I have always been able to read the tiniest print
with no correction with my left eye. This is very
very important to me as I read constantly and
    have no need for readers.
My worry - the doctor wants to do my left (good
reading eye) next in a couple of weeks. I don't
think I want to do that because something might
happen to make it necessary to use readers. I
would be very unhappy for sure.
Should I leave the left eye alone until it's causing a
problem? Will leaving the cataract alone for the
time being hurt my eye in the long run?
I'm 75 yrs old with the smallest start of dry
    macular degeneration the doctor said.
(My Mother had wet macular degeneration bad enough to have shots until she passed at 92)

I am curious, do you have out of state patients for cataract surgery that much? I feel most big cities in US will have several ophthalmologists doing cataract surgery but at the end of the day, outcome of any surgical operation depends on the skill of the doctor. If someone comes out of state at your clinic for cataract surgery, how do you manage any post-operative steps and post-cataract care/treatment?

    • @MicheleLeeMD
      @MicheleLeeMD  Рік тому +6

I do have out-of-state patients come for surgery or procedures. The logistics can be tricky, as a patient would probably want to be in town for a few days after each surgery to make sure there are no issues like infection or a complication during the postoperative period. I also like to do the eyes at least 1 week apart, and would need to see the patient before surgery, ideally a couple weeks before.
Every surgeon has their own preferences, and there are some that could expedite that timeline or who would want more time between eyes or for healing. Hope that answers your question!

There may be eye drops that can help prevent cataracts and certain things you may be able to do to slow it down (certain vitamins, sunglasses, etc.) but eventually most of us will need surgery for cataracts. One day, we may have an eye drop that does a good job preventing or treating cataracts, but it is too early to say. And yes, retinal detachments can be fixed, but depending on the extent of the detachment it may or may not lead to visual recovery. Hope that answers your questions!
