- The 288 GTO marked the revival of the designation “GTO”, for Gran Turismo Omologato. In Ferrari’s world, those three letters are holy. Ferrari was looking to compete in the FIA’s Group B, now considered to be one of the most legendary eras of racing. To do so, the car needed to be homologated for competition, which meant 200 examples had to be produced for the road.
Unfortunately, several casualties during racing struck the world of Group B rally, and the championship got cancelled. Ferrari, which had fully developed the 288 GTO and homologated it, ended up selling the car to its most loyal customers, without racing it.
The 288 GTO boasted lightweight aluminum parts, such as the doors, trunk, and engine-lid. A GRP and carbon compound formed some of the bodywork. Although visually similar to the 308 GTB, the GTO was much wider, and was powered by the then new Tipo F114B V8 developing 400 hp thanks to its twin IHI turbochargers, sending the car to speeds over 300km/h.
Only 272 examples of the 288 GTO were built. Compared to the other models considered as the “Ferrari big 5”, the GTO is the rarest, in fact, it is more than four times rarer than the Ferrari F40.

I wouldn't dare to drive it. I've declined driving my friends Ferrari 458 several times, stating it would be like sitting on Mona Lisa. Some cars i just see as pure art, i couldn't drive them and cause microdamage to it. I guess I'm comfortable sitting in the passenger seat though. The 288 is as you say, maybe the most beautiful car ever made, it looks gorgeous no matter what angle you view it from. My dream car, which, if i owned one, would be kept inside a dry glass cage in my living room.

@@FabledGentleman Yeah, I could imagine if I owned a 288 I would also be scared to drive it, because even if you're very careful yourself, you can't control what others might do.
I have once driven a Ferrari California when I was in Italy and although it might not be the most popular model for many, it was a really fun experience to drive it.

It´s such a shame that the 288 GTO is pretty much dwarfed in the public´s recognition by the apparently more spectacular F40. I love that it blends the 328´s elegance and delicacy with most of the F40´s madness.

This is the ultimate of the 308's, the original v8 Ferrari road cars, the Magnum car. It's also the father of the blessed F40, the most "iconic" car of the late 20th century.
When I was a kid growing up in the late 80's, everybody was all about the Testarossa. But this was the car waiting behind the bike sheds ready to steal it's lunch money.

Now to the ones i like the most and why :
The 3 above are all edge shaped with pop up headlights
The 3 down have a rather pointy look at the front and no pop up headlights anymore
I like the popup headlights
So thats why i continue with the upper 3
F40 is the only one of the remaining 3 with a mid mounted exhaust even the other 5 have 2 each side
And thats why its my N°1 ❤
Even if i will never be able to drive it
I admire the model car in my room

A few years back I was shopping for ordinary clothes and ran into a 288 GTO t-shirt :) - this was a 30th anniversary celebration. One of the magnificent cars in history!
