“The greatest and noblest pleasure which men can have in this world is to discover new truths; and the next is to shake off old prejudices.”
Frederick the Great
That needs to be placed above congress and every media outfit in America, it will confuse many of them.
Above every high school entrance in the country.
This could have a lot of meanings these days. 😂 I can appreciate the quote and the multiple meanings behind it. Love and respect all❤
,,Gentlemen, if this man would have still been alive, I wouldn't have made it so far." Napoleon to his generals upon visiting his tomb.
😊
That’s an awesome quote. Napoleon was human so of course he must’ve had at least one idol.
Wow amazing
Ooooh, yeah, Frederick would have kicked Napoleon to the CURB!
His father had a strong army and he’d use it as a mercenary force to make money instead of gaining territory, so he was a man with a strong army, rich treasury but small territory. “My father was great in small matters, and small in great matters” Frederick later said.
lol and history removers him not his father so he had the last laugh
Wouldn't that be something if kids rebelled nowadays by learning foreign languages.
If there is something wrong with the kid, always blame the parents because they obviously failed with the kid.
Let's learn Chinese!!!
My kid has. He's learning the black speech... and demands I call him Melkor.
I think I'm in deep trouble.
@@jmitterii2 Damn that's cool. I wish I had a kid :(.
@@jmitterii2 Just remind him you have the One Ring and Melkor, will be fine :)
Can you imagine never being good enough for your father, struggling lifelong against detractors and enemies, never quite feeling like you fit in, and then you get old and tired and just want to hang out with your dogs and your memories. I just gained a whole new level of respect. I mean if even huge narcissists like Napoleon and Hitler idolized this man, it says a lot.
Frederick Wilhelm was a horrible dad!
The Old Fritz has gotta be one of the coolest and most interesting people in history. I loved this documentary. It was comprehensive and filled with information, yet it also managed to keep me engaged. This was also the first documentary I've seen from this channel, and now, I go to it to watch biographies about cool historical figures. Thanks People Profiles.
“VERY INFORMATIVE” !!!. Yours truly Will VanNess
He was an enlightened absolute monarch and due to his achievements he planted the seeds of Germany. Thank you for making this video it is exceptional.
So nice of you
Frederick II of Prussia (Friedrich der Große) was one of the most skilled military strategists of the Modern Era, seconded only by Napoleon Bonaparte, who lived a few decades later. Although he was an absolute monarch, this highly educated prince was, fundamentally, an "enlightened absolutist," given his tolerance (and encouragement) of "free speech" along with his forbearance on religious practices of non-protestant creeds. Indeed, Frederick was such an extraordinary historical persona, that he deserved his popularly acclaimed name "the Great."
This is a really interesting one to think about but I would say a few generals of the modern era (btw what dates does that include specifically ? ) can be called equals/arguably better than Frederick. Napoleon as you said. Other contenders are Suvorov of Russia. Eugene Savoy of Austria. Dukes of Marlborough and Wellington of Britain.
Frederick the Greats victories at Leuethen and Rossbach are both stunning. But he did suffer more set backs than most of the other generals I’ve named. Charles XII Sweden was impressive too.
@@archivesoffantasy5560 In many periodizations of human history, the Late Modern Period followed the Early Modern Period. It began approximately in the mid-18th century and depending on the author either ended with the beginning of Contemporary History after World War II, or includes that period up to the present day. Notable historical milestones included the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the Russian Revolution. As such:
Early Modern: 1500 - 1749
Late Modern: 1750 - 1939
@@archivesoffantasy5560 I think you are quite right in many aspects, it's very interesting to think about and had he been only a Prussian general and not it's king I do believe I would agree, however what sets Frederick apart from other Generals is that he was also a quite apt Administrator, building on and improving the kingdom left to him by his father. It is also fair to mention I think that the level of adversity faced by him is quite easily what sets him apart. It is not that he faced setbacks but that despite those setbacks he scored victories on par with Napoleons greatest Masterpieces while also managing the rest of his kingdom without succumbing to adversity.
It was indeed a stroke of luck that saved him though I do not think it invalidates his achievements. Napoleon lost too in the end, and he does absolutely deserve his title as one of the greatest generals in more recent history. Mind you Frederick had not nearly the resources a mighty nation like france had available to him. I do not think that if put in his shoes Napoleon could necessarily have done much better, if anything Napoleons hubris might have been his downfall where Fredericks personality might prevail.
@@verySharkey I agree with you. Frederick got a massive (2 actually) stroke of luck that most generals don’t when tsar Peter took over. It was a miracle.
Nevertheless, he was a brilliant general and a great philosopher king. Definitely deserving of his epithet “the Great”.
His upbringing even for a prince was tough. His father had one of his close mates executed when they both to ran away, and seeing his friend beheaded would haunt fredrick the rest of his life.
Frederick the Great was almost certainly a homosexual.
Napoleon and Frederick were both alive at the same time
Thank you for honoring my memory, it was quite a turbulent time
Frederick the Great or Old Fritz is One of My Favorite Historical Figures. I Think My Favorite Thing About Him is That in a Way He Was a Modern Man Despite Living in the 18th Century
Honestly, the best leader my country has had aside from Bismarck, must've filled Germans/Prussians with so much pride serving under him.
He definitely deserved the name "Grosse"... A great, timeless man!
lol... i saw what you did there... well played sir
Otto the 1st was also a great leader, top 5 in my opinion.
How about Otto the Great?

I wish people knew that German history is so much more, than WWII and that there are incredible historical characters like him
I find Frederick to be one of the most interesting people who ever lived! His stock in trade was War, but his passions were art and enlightenment; these attributes combined served the larger purpose of establishing a progressive sovereign nation.
A life lived to the max!
My last name is Frederick ! Huge respect for the greatest general of all time!
Please write the names of the battles in the video as you mention them!
King Frederick greatly deserves the title of beng called great.
The research that was done by my brother ; found out that Fredrick the Great was an actual uncle to our family.
Bach's music was definitely the best choice for background music for Frederick The Great's Biography. Many connoisseurs will definitely know what I mean :)
?????
Europe was at its golden age during this period... we have lost more than we will ever know
In my opinion he is Europe’s greatest monarch alongside Peter the Great, he took Prussia from just another German state to a European power in his lifetime, not just military but culturally and economically he transformed his country into what would become the power that unified Germany under one hundred years later.
Didn't they loose those two wars?
In terms of military prowess and influence, Napoleon remains the greatest. But Frederick is definitely in top 3.
Thank You
@@scatalin09 Napolean is highly overrated as a General. The fact that he won every battle in which he had a numerical advantage, and lost every battle in which he was outnumbered, is confirmation of this.
@@archenema6792 you're dead wrong. Till 1807 he showed magnificent battlefield intellect only later did he count more and more on numbers and less prowess but he had so many fruictious campaign and revolutionized the army into the corps system which the Asutrians, prussians and Russians copied. He is truly one of the great generals in history and historians do agree
"Old Fritz, Old Fritz, Old Fritz, Old Fritz!"
I’m Frederick the great,
Out of the great first servant of state,
Oblique tactics aren’t exactly straight.
I’ve got creative talents and battle malice,
how to steel on the field and genteel in the palace!
Russia F’ed up wonder why?
With tundras, and tigers and bears, oh my!

I fought a Seven Years War,

Because defeating you only took me twelve bars!
Magnificent once again. Thank you and I'll be looking forward to your next endeavor
I think he deserves a positive place in European history. He gave Prussia a proper legal system in which all his subjects enjoyed certain rights, religious tolerance at a time in which the rest of Europe did not. He was an Enlighted despot for sure. Also Prussia was not a war mongering state, it spent way more time at peace than at war in his reign. If you look Britain and France they were always involved in some war with each other or someone else for most of the 18th century.
His religious tolerance only went as far as it suited him. Britain, the Dutch Republic, Switzerland and Scandinavia and some other German states were more tolerant. A high degree of religious tolerance was guaranteed in the huge Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth as part of the the Warsaw Confederation Act 1573 however, the degree of religious freedom varied over time. The Constitution of 1791 acknowledged Catholicism as the "dominant religion", but this was more a reaction to Orthodoxy, the state religion of the increasingly threatening Russia. Freedom of religion for other Christian churches and Judaism was still guarenteed after 1791. The period of total religious freedom within the Commonwealth 1573 - 1791 encompassed ALL of the life of Frederick the Megalomaniac
As a matter of personal ambition, Frederick the Megalomaniac started by forcing huge numbers of reluctant young men into his fascist army and then instigated wars with his German neighbours which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and vast numbers of Slavs in Silesia and Čechy. This is in addition to the untold misery of millions of civilians who died of famine and as a result of pillage, those who were murdered, and vast numbers of women who were raped by marauding soldiers. He also put the German oppression of Slavs into a higher gear, which, over the course of the next 170 years, resulted in the deaths of over 100 million Slavs .... at least 30 million in the final German belch 1938-1945 (Yes ! Of course, Hitler admired him). We hear still today, the grizzlings of a Satanic Cult of which the Nazis murdered about 5,700,000. This pales into insignificance when compared to the deaths of over 30 million Slavs. The German view of Slavs is perhaps well represented by the words of Reinhard Heydrich which translate into English thus, "A third of all Czechs will be exterminated, the other two thirds will be worked and starved to death in the regions of Russia". It should be remembered that Catherine the so-called Great was a German as were the Russian Tsars thereafter and many of the aristocracy in Russia through to 1917. Poland was progressively chopped to pieces by the German Berlin Regime, the German Vienna Regime, and the German Tsarist Regime.
@@terryhoath1983conquering and wars were just the normal thing back then
@@terryhoath1983well poland was a weak state back then and we all know what happens with weak states clutched in between strong ones
Also your pulling this numbers of 100 millions out of your arse
And calling jews a statanic cult should be more than enough to know about you. Hitler would have agreed
@@swagkachu3784 So was torturing and burning women accused of witchcraft, in the majority of cases, the evidence being that they had learnt a great knowledge of herbs which they used to cure illness. Just because warring, and torturing and burning of women was common, it doesn't excuse it. Frederick the Megalomaniac was an evil creature and it would have been better for everyone in Northern Europe at the time if he had been drowned at birth.

Great video! I always, always learn from y’all. Thank you so much.😍
You are most welcome, glad you enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the video very much. But, although you mention Voltaire as a famous contemporary, you omit Bach, who was invited to Sans Souci in 1747 and wrote “The Musical Offering” based on a theme by Frederick. Fewer battle scenes and greater emphasis on Frederick’s cultural connections would be preferable.
Also, is there any objective evidence that Fredericus Rex was a homosexual?
Johannes Runquist There is some evidence of it yes. Letters written to his sister have many gay undertones or outright sayings that prove his sexuality. I remember reading some evidence that had to do with him falling in love and pursuing a relationship with a boy his age when he was younger which upon the discovery by his father the boy was sent away and court culture changed practically overnight. I know Voltaire at one point after a falling out between the two stated that Fredrick was gay. Let me find some links.
@@JohannesRunquist No. We have several sources to prove that he had affairs with at least 3 women. He might have been bisexual, but I doubt even that since there is no evidance for that.
Truly a towering figure in history, both literally and figuratively. The only criticism of him with which I hold any sympathy is the hypocrisy of his only serious splash into the literary world. He castigated with powerful and convincing rhetoric the brilliant mind who refined the very arts of statesmanship of which he was a master. His continual reinforcement of this line throughout his life helped to forge a strong cultural tradition in the west of duplicitous political leaders who espouse certain values in public rhetoric while implementing diametrically opposite policies.
Excellent video! I was recommended here by HistoryMarche, and you just got a new subscriber!👍

I always like Frederick the great and his Prussian Army!!!!😃👍👍
Frederick is one of the greatest rulers the world has ever seen or known. He transformed a pretty much backwards kingdom in one of the greatest powers in Europe.
I have a little exercise for all of you. Napoleon Bonaparte vs Frederick the Great as military commanders. Who would win and why?
Napoleon, his troops had muskets and they were more mobile because of the corps system.
@@Mizelei2012 He did revolutionized how an army should move.
@@romelnegut2005 if mobility and logistics are the basis of comparison, the Duke of Marlborough put them both to shame.
@@Mizelei2012 Napoleon was a considerably better as military commander, but Federick was overall better as a monarch.
Great content 👏❤
Good work. Thank you

Frederick William: The Domestic Abuse King
Sometimes we really wonder if the morons that strike the thumbs-down, are the very same that do so on all channels, all videos. They most assuredly do not even view/listen to the videos. Undesirables, that undoubtedly blame the world, their parents, social media, for their own misery.
I agree with you there, it's very easy to criticise, far harder to create and be original.
@@idontgiveafaboutyou I don't think that's what they meant by this. Can't please everyone and they know this, but the majority of hate or dislike this channel gets comes from people that are just looking to rip someone's hard work apart. Why? Who knows. But I think that's actually what's being referred to here, disliking the video because troll's can't create, only hate
Austrians thumbs down
I live near King of Prussia, PA, USA
Nobody around seems to care about the real person. They shop there at one of the largest malls in the country... (They call the town KOP, so they don't have to say the long name.)
PA was settled by a huge number of Germans over the centuries, especially early on in the state's history, hence the town's name.
Not far from where I live, is Valley Forge, where Washington wintered his troops before crossing the Delaware River. When he fought the British at Trenton, and won the battle, he had to not only engage the professional army of England, but had to battle Hessian mercenaries who fought bravely. Some of the captured Hessians were put to work on farms (Many in Berks County), where they were absorbed into the local German speaking population.
I first discovered Frederick's musical genius when I studied J.S. and K.P.E Bach's harpsichord music. His court music director and resident composer, at Potsdam, was Bach's second oldest son (Karl Phillip Emanuel). He often directed the symphonies of the King (and those of his own). His other duties included accompanying Frederick's flute playing.
When "Old Bach" came to visit the court, Frederick immediately had J.S improvise a fugue on the King's theme (a very hard thing to do, especially given the bizarre fugue subject.)
It's tempting to think that Frederick would be forgotten had Catherine not passed away and peter subsequently pulling Russia from the conflict. But, would Peter have done so if Frederick was not already considered 'great'?
Very good documentary.
Hitler had one painting in his office, that of Frederick the Great.
If ever a man deserved the title of "Great", he definitely is the one I'd cite. He must have had an IQ of over 200.
😂 his father built the entire military system that enabled all his sons accomplishments. Frederick just took dads steps and built off it
Not even close but hey some people just like to hate

I find it a crime that Frederick the Great is little know about or admired by the modern German state and its people.
Yes I think Frederick the great was a benevolent leader and Military strategist, I kind of think of that in the way of how I play a game of strategy by Mobility.
Frederick was great Really
Fredrick the great,damn great!
Frederick The Great 10/10 military leadership 10/10 Statesmanship.
Peter The Great 5/10 military leadership 10/10 Statesmanship
Napoleon 10/10 military leadership 0/10 Statesmanship
A. Jay that is a great comparison!
Napoleon was probably a 10/10 militarily but Fredrick wasn’t
@@GeeJayO1022 Frederick was Napoleon's inspiration and he studied Frederick's military doctrine. Napoleon was definitely inspired by Frederik's battles of Rossbach and Leuthen, while planning Austerlitz.
Caesar 10/10 military leadership, 10/10 Statesmanship.. Fredrick was more of an 8/10 as a military leader.. He consistently underestimated enemies and made mistakes that Caesar and Napoleon did not.. Sometimes he didn''t even know where his enemies were on the map.. Let's not forget his humiliation early in his military career..
9/10 Statesmanship, his betrayal of France is 1 reason why he was constantly fighting outnumbered (A Caesar would have handled the situation much better).. He was great but does not deserve a 10/10 in either metric.
@@dubbyx8490but he was inspiration to Napolean and he latter improved because of two reasons 1) he accepted his mistake and then learnt from them he was fast learner! So i think 10/10 is fair
Awesome
that Maria Teresa is a real buzz kill for his plans
Even though he displayed bravery in personally leading the battles, Frederick was very willing to spill the blood of his people on endless warfare to make Prussia one of Europe's great powers. That alone makes it difficult for me to consider him a benevolent despot. Prussian militarism was one of the great curses in 20th century history, with the outcome for Germany being the loss of much of the territory of historic Prussia to Poland and Russia.
Fred's a nice guy tho no cap RIP bro fly high 💔
A great man yes
Please do one on James Wolfe or Robert Clive
How was the battle of Trafalgar?
I only remember him from The Musical Offering !
There is a reason he is a 6/6/6 Ruler in Eu4...
Hey, you do great and full biography videos! Please do one about Leon Trotsky, who basically led Russia into becoming a Socialist state, very influential character either liking him or not.
Here we go! Though I still don’t understand the difference between “King in Prussia” vs “King of Prussia”
Every kingdom has one king and he is the king IN the kingdom. In my mind, King *in* is the same as King *of* 😅
It’s king in Prussia because they still wanted to recognize the polish king as Prussian king so they wouldn’t go to war but king in Prussia still held the power...I think
He was only king in Prussia, because the Austrian Kaiser didn't like the thought, that another king besides him rules in the empire. But "region" Prussia wasn't in the Holly Roman empire. So he couldn't king of the land Prussia, but he could king in the region of Prussia. This is the story.
Here's my question to you. When lauded about his generalship, Frederick said: I never did conduct a retreat. Was he being humble, for once, that he'd never conducted the difficult fighting retreat or sortie-to-relieve...or was he simply boasting that indeed, he was 'great' and never had to conduct a retreat?
A great military genius, consistently fought enemy forces twice , or three times his own army's size . He ranks second on my list of the 10 greatest commanders of all time!!!
He truly was a great SOB of his time !!!
Excellent presentation. Frederick King of Prussia was truly an outstanding and inspiring man even though through sheer hubris, he threw away an army at Kunersdorf (similar to Lee at Gettysburg. come to think of it). My vote for the greatest Frederick of all time is Frederick II Hohenstaufen (1194-1250)--Stupor Mundi, the Wonder of the World. In my opinion, Frederick II Hohenstaufen is the one Frederick deserving to be called "the Great."
Fritz definitely deserves it too, but not everyone who deserves the title gets it, and some who do not deserve it receive it anyway. Shit happens 😒
I love Frederick the Great!
Without comparison? But what about Maria Theresa?
By understanding European history make leaders make wiser choices in future agreements.
Amazing to hear how he was raised and how most people would not succeed but instead he flourished under so much torment hmmm
Lol, I think Federick would absolutely hate to be buried next to his father.
