    I have a swing blade mill and and a Grandberg mill. Anyone with a Grandberg mill would do themselves a huge favor by using a winch that pulls the saw through the cut. They are available from Granberg. It is so much easier on the body, and it results in a more consistent and smooth cut.

    Jesse, A few days ago I dared ,for the first time , to be slightly critical on your cabinet project. Well the Canadian viewer let me have it!
    That said, of all your endeavors this milling is by far the most impressive and credible undertaking. Stop calling yourself the homeowner. You guys are the independent sawmill experts. Well Done.

    Even after I bought a bandsaw mill I've found in my niche I still need a chainsaw mill. It's a very affordable way to mill large slabs.

    Also need to look at how large are the trees you need to mill as there are still areas that grow trees that would never fit on the mills deck. You also have the question of what was the area used for in the past as you can have artifacts left in the trees for the blades to hit like the bullets you ran into from someones target shooting.

    I think most of us who have a mill have started with a chainsaw mill or just milled freehand with a chainsaw lol. Ya that's me 17 years ago milling walnut freehand with a chainsaw. I'm not going to say it was smart but I got er done by golly. Lol. A sawmill is a symbol of freedom to me. Since I bought mine I haven't yet had to go out and get a J.O.B. is it easy? Heck no!!! Its hard work and starting out is extreamly scary financially.

    Great info. I have owned two different Wood Mizer mills, but not again. I just ordered a LARGE Granberg mill for 72". I do not know of ANY Band mill that will cut anything over about 3 ft plus maybe a little more. I have access to 4' to 6' diameter logs so need the chain saw mill.

    You can move logs to the mill with a log arch for your atv. You might also want to mention the Stihl voids your saw's warrantee if the saw is used as a chainsaw mill. I don't know if other saw manufacturers void it also.

    This is a great video, however I'm seeing some things that aren't 100% complete. I have a Logosol Chain Saw Mill. Some of the problems you mention with the Alaskan style mill aren't relevant to the Logosol, but then it has it's own issues. And when you talk about the kerf on a chainsaw - they do make thin kerf bars/chains for milling. It's still a lot more than a band, but a lot less than a typical chain.

    • @terencehennessy1145
      @terencehennessy1145 Рік тому

      I too run a Logosol w/ H570etech, and (for reference) measure 3/8x050 (WP30RP chain) at 1/4" KERF. Guessing the 1/2" kerf is 404 chain?

  • @johanneslaxell6641
    @johanneslaxell6641 2 місяці тому

    I would still (many years later 🤭) like to spread the word about Logosol F2+ if chainsaw is the way to go. It's a combination of an "Alaskan" and a "sawmill with tracks".
    Isn't the kerf ~¼" with the chainsaw and not ½"?
    And dragging logs on the ground (except for wintertime when there is snow) should be forbidden. That is why different types of timber trailers are invented...

    they did a very bad job with the clean up too the police did charge the power company for that they are very mad about it
    we do run the cow back in there too we had to chip it to the plus side they had to pay for us to clean up there mess the judge maked them paid for all of it we did have signs saying close gates afterward cows are president in fields
    we clean up the fence line too from trees too did pay off to have it
    have a neighbour have a portable mill he does custom cutting
    we did put up 3thd timber frame hay shied up to the house the bales subject for the farmer are storing bales under shields get a thermal imagers guns to check on the bales you put inside not overheating and cause a fire

      So a coal fired sawmill is more environmentally friendly than a gas powered? Who knew? Electricity doesn't magically come out of the wall, you know. Wind power only works when the wind is blowing. Solar power only works when the sun is shining. A half mile of extension cords to reach the job site uses a lot of plastic and copper.
