The Raptors were on the verge of a strong season after a 2-8 start with a new place to play, no home fans, new players, and no true starting center. We roared back and for about a month we were the best team in basketball making it back to 15-15. Then the covid protocol hit and we lost 3 of our best players for over 2 weeks. We lost almost every game. Then when they came back we had injuries and other problems. The two biggest problems are the depth and the front court. The starters are forced to play huge minutes because when we play anyone besides Boucher we get stomped.

As a raptors fan I’ve never hated the pandemic more than when half of the team can’t play due to it.
Right now I’m 50/50 on if they should tank, because they have some promising potential in Gary Trent, Chris Boucher and Malachi Flynn. But at the same time a high draft pick can also be very good.

I'd have to agree with you as a Raptors fan myself. There's lots of potential for the Raptors next year, hopefully they get a good draft pick and they get to play in Toronto next season.
Biggest fear is being a “middle” team i.e. making the playoffs then lose the first round & not getting a good draft pick. This team’s pride is too much they want to make a playoff push🤦🏽♂️
I think the Raptors can turn it around again in a year or two with a good draft, and our strong development system which has brought us Siakam, VanVleet, Powell and Boucher in the last few years. They must get a centre to be the centre piece of the defence, as the loss of Ibaka has been huge.

I for one have been pro tank for some months now lmao. It's our best opportunity to get a superstar of our own. I don't say its a full tank and rebuild though, its a soft accidental tank, this season has been utter mess but we'll be back next season.

The raptors are a well coached team and have one of the best training programs in the NBA. They definitely have great scouting and minor league connections. They also have probably the best developmental program in the NBA due to the fact that they are the only team out of the united states at the moment and they have never been a great destination spot for free agents. We might get some starters and the odd low level star or star past their prime but all of our big names were drafts or trades to a lesser degree. We make the most out of what we have and we tend to attract international players because toronto and canada is known to the world as a great place and multicultral. We also have the most important piece to ever be part of the organization....Masai Ujiri.

Man it’s crazy how tuned in you are to what’s going on w the raps as a Lakers fan. I wish they hadve traded Lowry for assets but at this point I agree with playing him less and trying to get a high-end prospect. This draft is DEEP DEEP so any lottery pick is gonna help. Regardless, the raps are a smart offseason away from being back at the top of the east.

the tough part is rotating Lowry (for his experience), and Flynn and Bembry for their development. Bembry has shown a consistent positive presence and Flynn has shown good growth recently but they both are very hard PG players (imo). As we have seen and know, AND has been said by many raptors through the years (most recently by Powell on his exit) Lowry is the THE vet. So the hard part is finding that rotation that work for the Flynn and Bembrys development but also gives GTJ the exposure with Lowry.
There is a very specific reason im leaving FVV out of the PG conversation. He doesnt play like one consistently even when hes placed in that spot. At this point in the season, Id say pull Freds minutes, at least as point guard, to shuffle the other guys minutes more for sake of in action minutes. Practice is practice but in game experience with the squad is huge.

Masai came to this same conclusion months ago, maybe even the minute Ibaka got offended during contract negotiations and F.d off to the clippers. Choosing baynes/len as your only 5s is essentially a decision to punt this year and look towards next season. Even if it didn't start off as a conscious move to bail on this season, it certainly became one once they realized just how incredibly bad Baynes had become and did nothing to help the teams crippling lack of rim protection and rebounding. It was obvious that baynes was no longer an nba level player within the first 10 games, and that not having any centers on the roster was toxic to teams chances this season. NN's defensive system cannot function without quality rim protection, raps perimeter guys have to collapse in to help at the rim..then cannot close out on 3pt shooters, just look at the raptors opponent 3pt shooting..its not just bad luck. Also not having a C forced both siakam and boucher to play out of positions which hurt their play badly, just look at the raptors rebounding numbers this season. Also affected their ability to get out and run in transition, siakam is frequently so exhausted from battling with actual big men for boards that he's often times just simply too tired to drag his ass out and run in transition. This season my not have been a real sell off your assets and go full OKC type serious tank...but FO damn sure made decisions that they knew would result in more regular season losses. In my opinion, similarly to you I think they should just tank the rest of the season play their younger players and allow them to develop more. They need to get the best pick possible and scout the players available. They have the best scouting and development system in the league.

No shame in calling the season a wash. I think the best comparison for now is the blazers. Bad situation last year+ injuries and they were a game away from missing the playoffs.. now they're a comfortable top team.. likely us next year

The Raptor's lost 8 games by 2 Possession also the no home court advantage is a big factor for the record they have and lastly the 9 game losing strike really hurt them this season... the Raptor's have never lost that many games since early 2010's so if they can go 15-5 or 13-7 they have a chance this year... I’m a Raps fan, not a big fan of tanking. But you can’t always win, under all these circumstances (COVID, different city, no fans, injuries) it would make sense to tank just for one year, and rebuild/retool with a great squad who are all in the same timeline of age. These guys are all winners, with a elite head coach who would box and 1 you, so they hate losing obvs

The plan; pickup Markannen, get a veteran post up center, keep Gillespie. FVV, Trent, OG, Siakam and Post center like Allen or Kanter. Bench Flynn, Bembry, Gillespie and Boucher and Markannen. Go get that draft player who is scorer.

The Raptors traded Powell for more cap space, but I am afraid they may not be able to hang onto Trent Jr. Raptors have 30M (Siakem) + 20M (VanVleet) + 20M (Anunoby) committed, and Trent Jr had already turned down TrailBlazer's 14M extension so he's looking for ~20M too. That's 90M just for 4 guys. Assuming around 110M cap for next season, the rest of the roster (11 players) is left with 20M - less than 2M each. You cannot find good help for that salary.
Also just to clarify, OG, FVV and Siakam weren't out because of contact tracing, all three guys actually had covid and this was confirmed by the players themselves. To my eye they're still dealing with the after-effects of the sickness. Similar to other players like Tatum, they didn't come back fully healthy after being cleared. Just watch these guys try to drag their asses around out there on the court..there is no way siakam is the same athlete now that he was in previous years

Ariel Hukporti - if available, he is quick, runs the floor has decent handles and can finish very well.
Sandro Mamukaleshvili - awesome handles for a big. He is a walking missmatch. If they put a big guy on him he runs circles around him, if a smaller guy he plays big and inside.
Luka Garza- can shoot the lights out from 3. Will definitely stretch the floor.
Kofi Cockburn - this man is a beast. Zion williamson-like power down low. Agressive and strong finisher and huge.

chris boucher will be a top centre in the league one day the raptors lost gasol and ibaka it is tough they are leaders and stretch 3
Boucher shouldn't be playing the 5, he's too undersized and probably will never put on the appropriate weight (or if he does it will affect his game). He has the potential to be a very good 3/4 though.
No point trying to make a run to get the buy in games or whatever. Test some of the developing players I. E Trent Jr and Boucher, don't start Freddy and lowry together, look for a good draft and go from there.

This year is just too much with the whole covid restrictions and not playing in Toronto. ....
We need to do what okc is doing and start the young guys/role players so they can develop faster and learn to play with the raptors better for next year. Resign Gary Trent for 3-5 years 12-15 million each and go get a center next off season. Maybe a big star like kat or buy a younger guy in free agency like Jarrett Allen. Raptors have a big future and we are one center short depending on if we get him in the draft or next season

I been sayin this since the start of the yr that yall can have this yr. We will be a top 4 seed next yr again. Everybody tryna ride wit play in games. Play in games? That's a joke! If u dont make the offs you dont make the offs. The play in is wack and as of tonight Cle, Wsh, an Orlando are within 2-3 wins of putting us in a top 3 pick. The smart thing to do is get one of these studs out the draft but either way we a top 4 seed next year regardless of free agency or the draft.
I don't think any team goes into a season looking to tank, and frankly, I don't think they should in order to slide down to snag the top draft pick. Masai and Bobby Webster have shown a knack for picking late round players that still fit Nurse's coaching style, which is how they picked up OG Anunoby, Jacob Poltl, and Pascal Siakam - all players that slid under the radar, but who have developed well since entering the NBA.
Protect their starters, sure, and rest up for next year, but taking their foot off the gas entirely isn't their style. They'll continue to try and compete, and I'm okay with that. They have been playing shorthanded and on the road for 52 games so far. They don't have a legit center which has forced them to change up their game planning, which was ultimately what caused the backslide. Having players test positive for covid and forcing the shortened roster to play with mostly undrafted players saw them spiral out of control. But I think they'll make a comeback next year in a big way. Main priority for them now is trying to keep Masai on, and then they can start planning a course for the next 3 years with new picks and signings.

I don't want to see the team tank... but, i do think it's becoming necessary. With the Nets looking like they are it's a wash for most of the East. They'd have to play some great basketball just to get into the play in game, possibly not even getting into the playoffs. If they did make it to the playoffs, they'd most likely lose in the first round. Really sad because this team loves to compete, but looks necessary for the future.
