Holy ****?! You meant here is a universe where Dell is NOT an abomination?? The sad thing is around 10-15 years ago, when they had JUST bought Alienware, they actually had some decent machines, with some cool engineering. I loved my original M17 laptop, it was absolutely balling at the time, but unfortunately economisation and gimmicks have now won over, over offering solid machines which happened to look swish. It's a real shame, as Dell has the clout and the ability (without even really costing them anything over what they're already spending) to make some top tier machines at great prices, but they keep spending money on the wrong things :(

Did you pay 1000 dollars for that CPU then? And if you were an "enthusiast" back then, how come you haven't decided for an upgrade for all these years? Usually people that spend that much can't compromise when the performance starts being less than stellar and buy the new, way better, thing. Like a 10 or 16 cores/20 or 32 threads Ryzen or I9 ... @@splashboi8985800x3D is probably going to take that title given that gaming wise it outperforms a i7-14700k in a lot of cases. That processor is nuts, V-cache is the future (if you want to explicitly game that is)

So funny that you bring up the 2011 socket.... Literally just finished upgrading my 5820k x99 and 2080super rig last night. I loved that cpu. Was still running everything at max at 1440 for the most part. Now at 13900ks and 4090 TUF. Bit of a jump. But yeah I know they were a dead end but the 2011-3 series was a beast for running a couple servers and gaming off of that that rig.
@Dawid I think I have the other 16GB ram stick in my rebuild I got. It's 16GB from a 32GB kit! I've had no luck finding a reasonable priced stick to match with it in UK.
My advice is not to worry too much about mixing ram. for a 16gb stick, you're not gonna have much luck. That, or sell the one you have, and get a different kit fresh.
my 2011 rig with a 4 core i7 from like 12 years ago is still running like a champ and has been past down to my 5 yr old, and at 73 bucks its tempting to pick up one of these processors lol
I just handed down my 5960x, X99, quad channel 16 gigs of ram (4x4), and gtx980 to my niece. It was a beast that aged reasonably well. The heat that thing put off is insane when overclocked. While it did cost me my left arm new, its is still running like a champ. To be honest I sorta wish I just bought a 3080 for it instead of an entire new pc with 11900k. CPU wise there wasn't much of a jump going from 5960x to 11900k. But to be fair the 5960x cost 3x as much new. Edit: I just remembered my x99 had 8 ram slots with quad channel (i just never needed more than 16 gigs). 8 ram sticks is probably what Dawid's wet dreams are made of

I'm sure you can flash bios on this motherboard to spomething from a different chinese brand and it will support features like cpu oc and custom ram timings
Hey David! Please for intel CPUs with issues on the motherboard overclocking try XTU! I used to use it with my W3680 back when I had an x58 board that didn’t work with overclocking
I still keep my old system, 5960x @4.2 ghz (air cooled, can get up to 4.5 with water cooling), 4x8 ddr3200, m.2 samsung ssd and a 3080 RTX and game on it. That 2014 cpu is still faster than some newer systems when overclocked.
I'm interested to see what the easiest route is for OC'ing this rig. My first thought would be to see if there is a new/different BIOS that you could install on the MB that would let you make changes. Followed up by some better cooling and maybe a 3070....then you could get CP2077 on high settings maybe.
Good luck finding that "new/different BIOS" ... I played around with a X79 socket 2011 AliExpress board back during the first lockdown, and the BIOS was a vanilla as I've ever seen. No BIOS update available from manufacturer (Atimeter, if I remember right) but an exceptionally dubious English-language Russian forum was offering BIOS workarounds so you could lock all 12 cores to 3200 MHz. I wasn't crazy enough to do that then, and with the current unpleasantness in Ukraine, I am certainly not going to do so now!
Thanks for video, looking forward to a hopeful follow-up using a replacement motherboard in the system to allow overclocking of the CPU, find your videos are both entertaining and informational thanks again for your style of your output!
I had the 5820k back in the day, x99 was a great platform if you went with the low end and just overclocked. It was actually my last enthusiest cpu since Intel finally started making more than 4 core CPUs after this generation.
Back then intel still believed in locking out features… the 5820k having less pci e lanes than their chipset siblings… ultimately culminating in the dumpsterfire intel fired with Kaby-Lake X which was basically a 1151 CPU put on a 2066 board locking out most features that you would go x299 for…
@@itmkoeln what? The desktop series at the time was 4th gen. The 4770k only had 16 lanes, opposed to the 28 lanes on the 5820k. The 28 lanes I had was more than enough for what I was using it for.
Watching this video in Brazil, it's easy to find people using a setup similar to that. GTX 1050/1650/1660 are GPUs really common here in Brazil and still being sold for a high price, but now the RTX 3060 are starting to be in a acceptable price (considering Nvidia only).

Big issue with Old intel extreme Editions is people think those are worth ungodly sums even 8 years down the line. Found 6950x (Broadwell-E) for 300 -400€ and 5960x (Haswell-E) for 300€ used and sometimes only bare cpus… People even ask 200€ for 4960x and 100€ for 3960x those are X79 CPUs… Based on Ivy Bridge and even Sandy bridge… That is why you would normally find a E5 v3 or v4 Xeon paired with these Chinese X99 boards. Back in the Broadwell and Haswell Days Xeons shared the socket and would work on desktop 1150 and enthusiast 2011-3 boards. With 6th Gen and the Arrival of DDR4 with Skylake Xeons were microcode locked out on anything but Workstation boards…

I loved my i7-5960X before it exploded on me. I bought it "lightly used" on E-bay, and naturally it broke well after the dispute period. But until then it was a really solid platform!
The i7 5960x was not intels first 8 core. Maybe in terms of the i-series, but xeons had 8 cores way before that. I'm still using a sandy bridge 8 core in my gaming/streaming system. In terms of the memory, on these motherboards you sometimes need to manually set dual channel/quad channel memory in the bios. That may be why you didn't see a performance increase from the ram. Some of them don't actually support quad channel even tho they say it so it depends on which board you got.

I was wondering about your overclocking woes. Did the machine not POST or not BOOT? If it didnt BOOT maybe re-installing windows would be in order? If it didnt post, maybe a BIOS update would help, and maybe tinker with the cpu voltages and etc if possible.
Man I’m bummed about no OC. I had a 5820k I was fiddling with a few months ago and overclocking was the only way to keep it using a significant portion of the 1070 that was in that system. Got it to 4.4ghz and it was pairing nicely. Threw at 6700xt in there to see what would change and saw no extra frames, except in Fortnite where it would stutter and spike massively.
i pretty much built this pc for less than 400. same motherboard, same cpu, same gpu. only difference is the case, cpu cooler and power supply and the fact mine has 4x 4gb and my power supply is a corsair cv 550
the motherboard code readout "19" is most likely a DIMM error. When enabling "overclocking" it's probably looking for a dual or quad channel memory configuration so it fails. Also the 5950x supports 2133MHz RAM maximum, so could be a problem there. You may need to enable overclocking AND configure the memory in the BIOs before rebooting. Finally, you should check out Miyconst for a BIOS version for that motherboard that actually fixes the Intel Turbo Boost.
Yes, I saw that POST code too, I hope Dawid will investigate that in a follow-up video. Also, plugging in PC beeper will give further indication of what’s wrong.

Aside from the gaudiness factor, I thought that was quite a respectable build (especially for the money). And I'm sure the RGB overkill could be turned down in the settings. Overall I'd give this one a thumbs-up
I actually have a GameMax power supply that I use on my PC, and it works surprisingly well! Though, that's due to the fact that I'm using a Ryzen 3 2200g, and a GTX 1060 6GB It's not gonna be able to run anything well if you have more power hungry parts because of the lower quality components, but if you are on a budget then it works really nicely
I have two of these in relatively mediocre spec machines (i5 10500 with a 1080 and a i5 6500 with 980ti). I pick them up locally from marketplace for cheaper than the rubbish on eBay or Amazon. I’m under no illusion they aren’t great but they do the job. Now if they were in a $1200 pc then I wouldn’t be happy
You'll have to dig deeper into the Bios to get the OC feature to work properly. Looks the default OC's they use when enabled were wrong and result in a crash. Sometimes if you let it sit for 20 mins or so while it seems stuck it will come back as it might be taking very long to train all the settings, but I doubt it. Nice video!
Those gamemax things are scary. I ordered a couple during the pandemic cuz they seemed like decent enough. One a fan went out in two days. The other would randomly just stop working at times and shuts down the pc. The one that shut down started to smell bad after a while.
Nice video! Although this PC has been way too overpriced, fun fact - X99 motherboards can run Xeons, some of them are quite a powerhouse for not that much money, and V3 series is capable to run at full turbo speed at all cores after some bios-modding, have one in my main PC with ASRock motherboard. Last year switched from i7-6800K 3.4GHz to E5-2697 v3 2.6GHz, that has 14 cores and 28 threads, turbo-unlocked, undervoltaged, and overclocked to 3.8GHz. Costed only 150$. Then last month switched from GTX1060 to RX 6700 XT. No CPU bottlenecks in any AAA titles I tested even at 1080p. Would definitely see such upgrade on that PC even with more powerful GPU! Though, cooler on that CPU could have hard times, not telling about the PSU.
It already has a 8c/16t i7-5960X so upgrading to one of those Xeons for gaming wouldn't make any sense. The 5960X is unlocked so he probably could OC it a bit with Intel XTU. If he had a normal OC capable motherboard he could easily get it to 4.5GHz all core or even higher (someone on ltt forums just got one to 4.8GHz at 1.348V) which for gaming would be better than the high core count Xeons even with the turbo unlock

9:00 I never found an overclocking "feature" on a motherboard useful at all. It either fails out right like that did.. or it sets an unstable OC that boots into windows fine, but run any software and BSODs up the wazoo. You should be able to tune your own overclock on it.

I can see a mirror universe where Dawid sets up his own pre-built company just to right the wrongs inflicted on him by all these dodgy pre-builts
Who knows, maybe there is a universe where I am the head of Dell. 😂
It's a real shame, as Dell has the clout and the ability (without even really costing them anything over what they're already spending) to make some top tier machines at great prices, but they keep spending money on the wrong things :(
@@alexrose1ukv2no, there is a universe where Dawid approves of Dell’s abomination, that seems more likely. Lol

I still have my 5960x overclocked to 4.6GHz I built Nov 2014 still running, it's still very fast with this overclock, 8 years is pretty amazing.
I had a 5960X until I upgraded to a 9900K in Dec. 2018. I loved that CPU and OC'd mine to 4.4GHz, but I think either my mobo or CPU degraded, because it can barely POST at this point.
Or at least that's what they say (I've never met such a unicorn in real life before hehehehe)
@@DrDevinRX - Mine is still running like the day I built it, I was running it at 4.7GHz for a few years but since 2019 have had it at 4.6, can't remember why but it's still a beast.

Give Intel's XTU a try for overclocking the CPU. Not sure if it's comparable with the older I7 but it's worth a try.

Back when Intel had no competition and charged $1000 for its best CPU. I don't miss those times lol.
After all X99 and LGA 2011-3 where not really targeting the Desktop… 5950x were in the Haswell Days… Just replacing the 6 core 4950x on Ivy Bridge-E
While the 5950x kinda says Broadwell (due to the 5), intels naming was worse than today… Intel named their enthusiast chips a higher prenumber… Haswell-E was named 5950x and Haswell-S was 4770k and later with the Refresh 4771k/4790k
But you could also get a 5820k for $300 back then which was a really good deal. I have one and it gets to 4.6ghz and does well in games. I don't think there will ever be a cpu that remains serviceable that long

Hey David! Please for intel CPUs with issues on the motherboard overclocking try XTU! I used to use it with my W3680 back when I had an x58 board that didn’t work with overclocking
I have been making PSUs for 87 years now and can confirm that Gamemax is a very safe and reputable brand.
That's quite the career
😅
So how old are you? 100? 😂
I'm pretty sure Intel XTU should work on it
Thanks for video, looking forward to a hopeful follow-up using a replacement motherboard in the system to allow overclocking of the CPU, find your videos are both entertaining and informational thanks again for your style of your output!
@@GrumpyWolfTech the 5930k and 5960x came with 40 lanes the 5820k had as you rightfully stated 28 CPU PCIe lanes…
Watching this video in Brazil, it's easy to find people using a setup similar to that. GTX 1050/1650/1660 are GPUs really common here in Brazil and still being sold for a high price, but now the RTX 3060 are starting to be in a acceptable price (considering Nvidia only).

Just out of curiosity, did you try the overclocking feature with the new memory? Was that error code 19 memory related?

Honestly, with four DIMMs and at about half the price, this would be fine. It's just the pricetag for it that's awful.
I agree. It’s just waaaay too expensive.
Big issue with Old intel extreme Editions is people think those are worth ungodly sums even 8 years down the line. Found 6950x (Broadwell-E) for 300 -400€ and 5960x (Haswell-E) for 300€ used and sometimes only bare cpus…
People even ask 200€ for 4960x and 100€ for 3960x those are X79 CPUs… Based on Ivy Bridge and even Sandy bridge…
That is why you would normally find a E5 v3 or v4 Xeon paired with these Chinese X99 boards.

In order to make overclocking work and turbo you'll need to flash the bios to a different one.
Love your great entertaining videos Dawid but they aren’t long enough. Need more Dawid 👍
