And only part way through editing the video did I realize that it's Revelation, no S, and no He Man
This video took way too much time for a show I just kinda like.

My problem with the show is that like the New star wars trilogy it's a show that isn't really sure what it wants to be. On the one had it wants to be this new darker more analytical version of its familiar story. On the other hand, it also wants to be a legacy show and those two tones don't mix well. The He-man flashbacks in each episode don't help the matter either. It's almost rubbing in the twist from the first episode in the audience's face. More than anything it wants to be this new masters of the universe with Teela at the center, but that just makes the lore dumps and character revelations more awkward. Like the robot character, he's played up like this legacy character with swelling music that the audience should know, but he's never fully explained.
That first intro episode did a really good job, of establishing the world and the characters, and then it upended the apple cart and left the audience trying to figure out everything else.
Honestly, if they had just moved the first episode to later in the series, I'm convinced the series would be looked at a lot better. It would be a bit like Casser sins which is another gritty reboot, with a deep legacy behind, it, but because we start with everything already destroyed, it pulls us in, questioning how things became this bad.

I think the main problem was promising he-man to a he-man starved audience and then ripping it away this wouldn't be a problem if there was a lot of resent he-man content.

7:00 Here's the thing about "edgeness" there is NOTHING inherently wrong with it (if done correctly) except that audience tends to MISS the point and just focus on the edgeness as opposed what piece of work is actually about. It's sort a like the Alan Moore's Watchmen/Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns effect where people focus on the "edge" and not what those stories are actually about.
Yeah, Nolan's TDK trilogy are "edgy" compared to Burton Batman films but they aren't as mean spirited as the Burton's films. Because Nolan's Batman films take death and destruction seriously thus making those films more humanistic as depicts the value of human life as opposed to Burton films that just treats it as camp. I like the Burton Batman films but it get's annoying when people think camp is somehow superior to "edge" because they think being light and fluff is more "authentic".

Yep! I guess mean spirited was the words I was looking for. I think most of my dislike of the tone of this show came from me wanting it to be something that it's not, and even then That in particular may be just my personal preference. I think this show probably resonates more with people who enjoy more dramatic stories.

@@Cosmine I never thought the darker, more serious tone of Revelation was ever forced or overly cynical. I think the whole point of this show (at least the first half) is the loss of innocence. Someone made a really good point that the Revelation was ultimately telling fans "be careful what you wish for". Because by introducing darkness and violence in a franchise that previously didn't have it (which what many old school He-man fans claim they wanted) you lose the magic and innocence of the original series. Once you bring in violence you bring consequences, He-man dies and magic is gone, you make Skeletar into a legit threat and not just a punchline, he stabs Adam, takes the sword, and become SkeleGod. But by losing magic and innocence, the show and characters themselves reaffirm why it's important in the first place.
And btw, I think what people remember the most about the Burton Batman films was the camp but when you look back on those films they were pretty mean spirited. I get why parents were uncomfortable with those films and they had to change the tone for the sequels.

That said, a Teela centric MotU? I hate that I don't have Netflix, and keep putting cool shows on my "shows to watch when I cave and get netflix," but this is now super high on my list to watch.

Do they bring up Teela being (probably) the Sorceress's daughter? I think there's an Evil-lyn/Sorceress thing too, but I can't remember the details. I never understood why she was on Skeletor's side. Seemed like a downgrade at best.

My problem with "MotU Revelations" is that Teela was mis-characterized as a selfish jerk-wad who abandons her duties to go sulk as a bounty hunter, and the rest of the story is built off of that premise. In every other version , she's always been a loyal and honorable warrior, and if they would have kept her that way, we could have gotten a much better story.

    • @Cosmine
      @Cosmine  2 роки тому +1

Yeah since working on the video I looked into that and I also would've enjoyed if they stayed with the original Teela more. But then again I'm torn cause I do enjoy whenever a series tries something new, even if it doesn't pan out, and I like how Revelation is more dramatic. What can I say other than it sure is divisive lol.

@@Cosmine I agree with you about enjoying the dramatic & dark tone, and I think we still could have had that with a more in-character Teela.
Example: instead of leaving her post to go be a mercenary, what if she stayed, realizing that the kingdom needed heroes now more than ever. The story could have followed her in her desperate attempts to keep the lands from falling into chaos, but despite her best efforts, the world is still dying due to the eradication of magic in the first episode. That's when she gets the band back together to go get the swords back.
It ultimately ends up in the same place, but here she would act as a beacon of hope, instead of an angst-hole. I think old school fans would have been a lot more accepting of that version.

@@jacksquatt6082 Ooo that IS more interesting, it would've definitely given Teela the chance to feel the weight of the responsibility of being the Man-at-Arms, compare her faults and strengths with Adam while she's coming to terms with his death. My only hope for the series going forward is for her to realize the mistake she made while abandoning her duty and steps up to the leadership position.

Imagine if they sell you the show as a continuation of the original series. But as a conclusion to the final battle that never happen in the show. At the same time there has been a lot of amazing lore material bettewn the 80s to now that has expanded the lore a lot...
I am glad to took something out of it. This show mat be it was for you but not for tge fans
