As I return to my hefty boxes years later, I thank you for this excellent video - well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been playing board games for 40 years, with over 300 in my collection, and honestly, this is the best game tutorial I've seen. Bonus points for translating a poorly organizing rule book! Subscribing for more!
You didn't happen to do a video for Conan the Strategy board game?
sorry I don't is that the one from Ares?
Wow that has to be one of the best comments I have gotten and it really means a lot thanks so much for your kind words and for the sub.
@@LearntoPlayGames the work that uve done is magnificent. i was searching for a tutorial and ur was absolutely what i was looking for. nice close ups nice editing explaining everything slowly .... gongratulation man
The most helpful, clear and consistent guide I have found for Conan. Thank you. And just the right length. Fabulous.
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment, I am so happy it was helpful. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great tutorial! Haven't played this game in 4 years! Setting up a game with some friends in a couple of days and this tutotrial is perfect for prepping me
Thanks, I really need to get this one back to the table as well;)
Arguably the best video on UA-cam for the Conan boardgame. Thanks for all the work!
Thanks so much for the wonderful complement, it really means a lot hearing that my videos are good and that they help people learn and play their games.
This is probably one of the best tutorial style videos I have seen.
Your attention to details and making yourself understood is so great.
Like how you individually count down the "hits" on the dice when reducing armor, step by step so you can understand everything.
You're good at this, a great teacher. I bet you have many successful game nights teaching new players. You got the gift!
Wow, thanks so much it really means a lot hearing my videos help people learn and enjoy their games. Thanks for your feedback and support;)
Have played a friend's copy and need refresher before teaching to my friends with my own copy I received in the mail this week from the conqueror campaign. Thanks for the video!
As has been said below, this tutorial is the best I have ever seen ! I wish had a video like this for all my boardgames !! :)
Wow, thanks!
This is an excellent video. I picked this game up recently and I plan on taking it to my game night. Now I feel like I'm really prepared to teach some players. Thanks!
Just grabbed this one out of my closet again. Planning on playing it again so I thought I would look at some gameplay videos again. I noticed you playing the move action wrong. There is no need to assign a gem for the free movement points a hero gets. Great video though :)
Thanks for watching, Ya that was the one thing I got wrong and I think I was using the original rule book when making this video which was a mess and unclear on a number of points. Thanks for pointing it out though;) I love this game and can't wait to get my new stuff from the latest crowdfunding campaign.
I’ve had this on my shelf for a little while now. This is the best and clearest video I have seen on the game. I’m really looking forward to getting it onto the table. Thanks for the great video!!!
He is wrong about the initial movement costing a ctystal: It is free
Thanks so much for watching and posting. I would love to hear how your first game goes and what you think of it after;)
You are correct, This was one of the issues with the rules early on. Thanks for posting this;)
I've been listening to several broadcasts to remind me how to play. I haven't played since the game released, 5 years ago. I think you are the only one who actually discusses character damage and death.
Thanks, I have tried very hard to make sure my videos cover the game thoroughly and timely. Thanks for posting and watching.
Great tutorial, thank you! I read the rules over a year ago and needed a refresher because I'm going to introduce this game to my friends tomorrow. This now really helps me remember and understand the mechanics of the game so I can get them started and from there we can all fill in the blanks as we play.
Thanks, so happy it helped you. Hope your game goes well.
Thanks so much for this. I use it to refresh myself on the rules every so often.
Absolutely love the way you have been describing how this game plays out.
Zoomed in so details are visible, showing cards and items as and when you reference them and showing examples.
+1 Subscriber here!
Thanks so much for the kind feedback and for the sub it means a lot that my videos are helping people play and understand their games. Thanks for watching.
Dude, AMAZING explanation! Thank you very much! Just picked up the game and im 110% confident i can play this now! You have a new subscriber!!!
Thanks so much for subbing and for watching. Hope you have a great time with the game;)
Just bought the game (a little late, I know), and this video was a real boon. I've watched a load of 'how to play' videos and most are really dry (to the point I can use them as soporifics). Yours is excellent, to the point, yet fully detailed. I now feel fully confident in approaching the game, and teaching others in due course. Many thanks. Subscribed!
Thanks so much it is really nice to hear that my videos are helping people to learn and play these great games. Thanks for the sub as well.
Great video. I'm hoping to introduce this game to our gaming group soon and was kinda nervous about teaching it, having not yet played it myself. Feel a lot more confident after watching this
Thanks for watching and posting, hope your game goes well and just have fun with it;)
@@LearntoPlayGames Thank you! I'm taking Blood Rage to our next board game night so that should get us started on variable player powers and glorious battle :D
Great video! This is one the best tutorial videos I have watched. Thank you.
Thanks, It is always good to hear my videos are helping people enjoy these great games. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Your video helped me immensely with learning to play as the Overlord. Thank you!
thanks for watching and commenting.
6:35 to be more precisely, you get those points only at the beginning of an Action Phase and also when you declare to be in ACTIVE stance :)
Nice video. Great way to learn the rules. Thanks.
I noticed in the throw explosive orb example, is that a free line of sight? Isn't there a bush in the way along the line?
Thanks, i will check that out about the bush and I will get back with you in a couple of days.
Excellent how to play thanks
Great job! Very clear and helpful. Keep up the excellent work :)
Thank you, always good to hear my videos are helpful.
55:40 The gem spending to pick an unit type to activate seems smart, but also kinda weird?
Here you spend 3 gems to activate the Hyenas, but you could also first activate the unit in the 1 gem position, then the new unit in that position, and then activate the hyenas for 1.
The end result is you still spend 3 gems, but you also got to activate 2 extra unit types.
Seems the only reason to skip units is if you want to group up particular types next to each other.
or am I missing something?
EDIT: Watched it again, they can activate up to 2 tiles, which makes sense then.
Fantastic tutorial for this game.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and posting;)
Thanks for the video! Good stuff!
Amazing video thank you.
Fantastic video. Many thanks
Thanks so much for the great feedback. Thanks for watching.
Awesome, I gotta get this board game
Thanks, this was a good game and I would recommend it if you can get a copy. I will have some new videos coming soon covering their next game as well.
I really appreciate this video iam dyslexic and reading rules can be abit too much i enjoy these games thou
Thanks so much, It is great hearing the video was helpful. Hope you have fun with the game;)
Really cool of the designers to add symbols on the dice for colorblind people. I would have no way of telling the different colors apart otherwise.
There are a few companies that do this with their games, but hopefully more will move to include features like this to help colorblind people. Thanks for watching and posting;)
At 38:33 wouldn't it only take one gem to re-roll two dice seeing the axe gives him the ability to re-roll one of the two dice?
Rules to play solo. Using overlord.
* Be aggressive when using overlord. Move to confront. Take risks. Spend gems to defend units.
* Make activations as cheap as possible.
* If many heroes are in a zone, use D6 dice and assign numbers to heroes to select a target. Dice roll will tell you what hero to target.
* If a hero has no gems to spend overlord will not target the hero.
* Dead units cannot be activated and moved to the end of the river This rule stops if the first two elements in the river are dead.
A quick question: Isn't there a reroll symbol on the attack dice of the Pict hunters you used in the example overlord turn? Wouldn't that mean they're allowed to reroll anyway? Or does it just mean that the Overlord can spend gems to make them reroll those dice?
Thanks for commenting, you are correct the Pict hunters would get a free re-roll as it is shown on their card after that the overlord can spend gems as I showed in the video to re-roll as well. Good catch, thanks for pointing that out and thanks for watching.
The free movement does not require spending gems in V2 ruleset. I had to recheck this from another video and from V2 rulebook.
Teleportation also require 2 gems at least. 1 to activate and 1 to move a single space. (Going through this helpful tutorial to be ready to teach game.)
thank you for the great tutorial, it was easily the best tutorial boardgaming video I have seen ^__^
Wow thanks for the great complement it really helps hearing that people are finding my video helpful. Thanks for watching and letting me know what you think.
well, it was well deserved ^__^ we just played our first game this morning and watching your video helped me much more than even reading the rules 0o
I'm often getting lost during video tutorials, but you managed to beat my ADHD perfectly :D
by the way, is there any option to support your channel aside of subscription?
I would be happy to chip-in via Patreon/KS campaign/Paypal.
Thanks so much, I have not yet decided to do any funding options, but I will be looking to do that in the future and it really mean a lot that you are willing to contribute to my channel. I have some really cool ideas for the channel and after I get a bit bigger I will look at ways to fund some of those ideas. For now if you could just pass my channel along to any of your friends or share it on any media sites you go to that would be a huge help. Again thanks so much for watching my videos and letting me know what you think of them.
cool :) let's wait for the subscribers then ^__^
Thanks for the help!
Do you have a video on how to play the solo/coop version?
Excellent excellent
Thank you for this video!
You are very welcome, thanks for the feedback, for watching, and for taking the time to leave a comment.
Excellent tutorial.
Thanks a lot!
your welcome. thanks for watching;)
really well explained, thanks!
Thanks so much!
dude, you rock! Thank you for the awesome vid. Great job!
Thanks so much for the wonderful comment and for watching;)
Fantastic!! Great tutorial! Thanks so much
Thanks so much, glad it was helpful. I do have a question for you was the video to long or was there areas that were unclear or could of used a better/different example. Thanks
Your tutorial helped me a lot. There were enough examples. You cannot make examples for each skill. You made a great tutorial. You should look for crowdfunding. Now please just release kingdom death monster tutorial 😀😀
I will be doing that but I think it is best to wait till I can get the updated 1.5 rules so I don't have to do it again in 6 months. I am planning to talk with Adam about getting the rules early so I can get the video up around the time he starts shipping out the updated games.
When you use the teleportation spell at 31:26 you use one gem , should you not pay two gems? One for activating the spell, and one for each area you travel to?
Let me double check the rules on that. I think someone else said something about that to and it might of just been the way I read the card. Thanks for watching and for the question.
Thanks for the video btw, had this game for a while but just started learning it, so this video was a great addition to the revised version 2.0 rules.
Isn't the white value on the movement space a "free" movement? Meaning requiring no gems
There is no free movement, but the first time you perform a movement by placing a gem you will get that value instead of just one move point so in a way it is a bonus to your movement.
From revise rulebook:
"At the start of the Action phase, an aggressive hero gains a number of movement points equal to their base movement value. These movement points are free; they do not require the hero to assign gems to the Move action. As a result, the first movement points a character spends are the movement points gained thanks to their base movement value.
Each turn, when a hero stops moving to perform an action other than a Move, the hero loses all of their remaining movement points. However, the hero can still perform a Move action to gain movement points that turn. "
So, yes, basic movement points are free if not interrupted.
Thanks for great tutorial, though.
Thanks good catch, when I wrote the script for this originally I was using to base rule book which was very unclear on this so I when with the side of caution. I did go back and run through the revised rule book and missed this. I will try to find a way to fix this in the video. Thanks for correcting me I always want my videos to be as accurate as possible.
Yeah the black box in movement is the number of free movement
Great Video good sir..... thank you so much.
your welcome thanks for watching and posting. hoping to have one up soon for Batman as well if you back that one.
Sadly I did not. I did just receive my copy of Joan of Arc though...... just say'n ;)
Question.
* When overlord assigns gems, what dice color must be used?
* Ornamental spear has a dice with reroll arrow. What does it mean? How do you use it?
the guard action is one orange die per gem. as far as the spear, it gives you an additional reroll
At first: great video. Some good clarifications.
Though I´m not sure if the free movement action of heros must be the first MOVEMENT action (before any movement action triggered by crystals) or the first ANY action.
Playing yesterday there were two questions:
1) When the event tile is triggered, do I remove it form the river or do I put it back to later reactivate it?
2) Jumping: how many crystals does it take? Skill says 2. But clarification skill says one for each crossed border. Do the Heros pay 2 or one for each border or both?
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. So I checked the rules again as the movement thing has given me fits and they do a better job in the revised rules so you can do other actions during your turn but the first time you move is when the free points are added so after that if you do another action and you have any remaining move points they are lost.
with your first question the event tile will be moved to the end of the river just like any other tile unless the scenario stats otherwise but normally it will just move to the last spot.
for the jump question I went through the rule book and it does not talk about jumping but the Leap action states for each boarder you cross it is one move point so if you have already used your free movement than it would be one crystal per boarder. If you are talking about climbing as in the boulder in the first scenario than you would follow the scenario rules and it says 2 move pts so again if you are out of your free movement pts it would cost 2 crystals. If this doesn't answer your question let me know and I will look into it further and see if I can get a better answer for you.
Thanks
My bad. I often mix up jump and leap ... even if there´s no jump in the rules :)
Thank you for answering that helped me a lot!
no problem
Nice one very helpful!
Thanks for the complement and for watching:)
You have a talent for teaching. Great job! Quick question, the rule book outlines specific weapons for each scenario. Do I have to use only those weapons? Or do I have the freedom to choose?
Thanks for the positive feedback. As for the question from my understanding each scenario is set so you can't switch out weapons, heroes, or enemies. I would say if you want to though you can. I think there are some posts on Board Game Geek that help with this as people have been play testing switching out stuff.
@@LearntoPlayGames
Gotcha, thank you for the quick follow up!
I enjoyed your how to, you did a awesome job. Thank you.
I do have a question for you, the game remind me of descent 2ed were the game is weighed towards the heroes. Do you feel that is the case with this game?
I have not played it completely, but from what I have seen it actually weighs a little with the enemy player which adds a nice challenge to the hero players.
Had a couple of Games. In a 4 + 1 Player Scenario don't you find Belit very underwhelming in Scenarios where she doesn't have her bodyguards ?
She is only a re-roll bot and her best skill is when she dies. Decided from now on to giver her spellcasting and a spell or two from now on
I agree, It is always cool to see house rules thanks for sharing;)
It needs a points system for the models so players can play it just as a minis game and possibly even competitively if so desired.
I know that there was possible talk of this at some point and I believe that there are people on Board Game Geek that are doing that very thing giving models points values and setting up a competitive game, you should go and check that out it might be what you are looking for.
thanks very much - off to play it now
your welcome, thanks for watching and for commenting. Let me know if you have any questions after your play through or just your thoughts on the game.
Question sir; some heroes have a "leap" ability. After you resolve a dice roll specifically for the leap ability and it fails. Do you pay 1 gem to reroll the dice? Or would you have to add gems to your movement action space to allow you enough movement points to roll again? My apologies if this question was worded poorly.
Thanks for watching and for the question. So first I have to say it has been a while sense I played this game I did go back in the rules to check this out. From what I can see I would say you would spend the gem for a reroll.
Very well done, thank you.
Your welcome thanks for posting and watching.
With the lightning 4 damage just 1 would take out all 3 monsters armor?
Hi there!
For the weapons/enemies that have an arrow on the dice (for reroll), do the player (or the Overlord) need to actually spend a gem to reroll? Or are these rerolls "free"?
Thanks for the question so when a dice is shown with a arrow that is a free reroll that does not require any player to spend a gem. these is also shown as step seven of the item card breakdown in the rule book v 2 on page 4.
Great video, man!!!
thanks for watching and for the great complement.
Enjoyed your video. I just noticed Conan has expansions, so I need to buy those. Love your shirt. You going to be at Gen Con 2017?
thanks, Yes I will be at Gen Con 2017
Awesome, if you think you would have time maybe we could play a game. Wouldn't be a problem with me bringing in my copy since I live in Indy.
That would be fun, hit me up on my Facebook page and we can work on a time frame.
Why would you do the recovery phase on the 1st turn? Seems to defeat the purpose of them explicitly putting 3 gems on the right box.
Thanks for watching and good question. So the heroes will start the turn and the overlord will be able to spend gems to help with re-rolls and defense as normal so by the time it becomes to overlord's turn he may have more than the three gems in his spent pile plus it will limit him a little as there are three gem used already. hope this helps, let me know your thoughts and if this makes sense.
there is a mistake about the movement...players get the first move action for free. you should make a note in the comments. i have a house rule, based on the first scenario of the khitai expansion. if they kill an enemy, the body stays in the space, but does not effect hinderance. the players can spend a simple action to loot the body, and draw an equipment card. i have mixed in the useless scenario based cards in with the equipment to act as junk. the bodies are removed when looted, or when an enemy moves into the space, and if there are no heroes in that space. if the space is ever filling up and more room is needed, the fallen pieces are considered trampled and removed. anywho, its just way to get a bit more loot. everyone loves loot
Are there other board games that use the same gameplay mechanics found in this Conan game?
The Batman game they made uses an upgraded system that improves some of the mechanics but is very close to this. Thanks for watching😉
Masters of the Universe: Clash for Eternia has a similar feel, tho a slightly different system. its a little more fst moving and basic too. conan is better, but he man is still fun
does conan have to place a gem there to get his first two movement points? I thought the first two were free?
They are free that was one of the things I messed up on. It was not clear in the first set of rules.
Conan has a problem. The manuals included in the box are incomplete, which makes the game unplayable. If you get the PDFs of the corrected manuals (the website is currently down) they refer to Valeria, a kickstarter exclusive. If you buy the sourcebook, because you want to replace Valeria (which is a kicktarter exclusive) in a way that the game stays balanced, you will find that their formula for balance is "aim for fun" and "trial and error" which is not exactly the best.
So the box is terribly incomplete.
I managed to download the manuals, and I made a printable card for Valeria for myself. But others will not be able to feel pleased with an incomplete box.
I agree and is one of the biggest problems with this game. I was really disappointed they did not have a better system in place to change characters and enemies in each scenario.
@@LearntoPlayGames If you buy the sourcebook, which I did, you would look for rules to create a scenario. You would imagine something like how to calculate "battle value" to balance the game. But no. It says "aim for fun" and "trial and error", so they were so lazy that they could not even figure out a way to calculate a rating for balance. And creating scenarios was a topic of the book. It is so lame. This is what discouraged me to continue buying anything else for that game. It is as if they have done everything possible to annoy players and make the game to fail.
@@LearntoPlayGames Modiphius is launching Homeworld kickstarter. If the game is going to come with defficient rulebook like it did with Conan, think twice. I will go for Battletech on March. There will be a kickstarter for it.
When defending, if you parry inside of dodge, does it do damage to the enemy?
No parrying does not do damage. it is just the way they separate the different defending types.
@@LearntoPlayGames But you can use a weapon to defend, right? How does that work? Do you have to assign a gem to the weapon? Do you only get to pick one item to defend with? In the video, when Conan is defending against the snake, he only uses his shield to guard. Why didn't he also use his leather armor? lol I apologize, I love the game but this is the one thing I'm unclear on (using a weapon or multiple items to defend) and it's driving me crazy.
Which game do you prefer between Conan and The Others 7 Sins?
That is a hard question, as I really enjoy both of them. So I would say it depends on what you are looking for. Conan has a great system of how it balances the players actions by having them spend gems so both the players and overlord have to make smart decisions. Conan also has a higher killing factor as the players are going to smash a lot of enemies. With the Others I liked the way the sins player had so many choices and how he really didn't have to hold back. I also really liked the customization as you could add additional content and use it to add more variety to game. Which in my opinion was one of the biggest issues with Conan as I was a kickstarter backer and got a lot of the extra content which is completely useless till they create scenarios for the characters and monsters as there is no system in place that allows you to use different heroes or monsters in the scenarios that are out now. I hope that helps I know I didn't pick one over the other but I like both games equally and have played both recently.
Extra content was not "completely useless" ... I replaced snake with dragon in first mission and took some hyenas out placing sabertooth tiger... It's just finding the balance after that ;)
Hindrance - you that wrong. With the updated revised rulebook, if the number of the enemies in the same area as the hero/ heroes is EQUAL or higher than the number of the heroes, the hero is hindered.
Thanks for posting I will look over the updated rules and post in the description a correction.
Add chapters to your video and it will be great!
I will try. Thanks for watching and posting the request.
Great video, but one “dice” is a die, not dice.
Thanks for watching and for commenting I have focused on correcting that in later videos so it should not come up as much;)
I still don't get it.
What seems to be throwing you I can try and answer some questions if that will help.
Are you still taking rule questions? The company is useless for that.
Yes, what can I help you with?
Learn to Play Games for starters someone said the Lord can only use his defense action once an attack but I couldn't find that in the book. 2) when minions are respawned can they also attack if enough gems...3) in the khitai tower can the minions move down a level and attack or do they have to wait till the heros come upstairs to activate that level
Any ideas????? Or especially number 3 which is so important in the khitai tower. I don't know if the soliders can advance down the stairs and attack or have to wait until the heros get on that level
An hour long jesuz
ya I know, when the rule book is rough like this one was I needed to go into more depth on things.
It worked though I know how to play now
glad to hear that, thanks for taking the time to watch my videos.
I know; it's irrelevant but...
Plural: Dice
Singular: Die
It's been bugging me during the whole video.
sorry about that.
Well, I'm a douche...
I entirely realize that you put a lot of effort into this 1h video (which shows). I didn't thank you for the information; which really helped a lot. And I didn't congratulate you on the format of the video which is objectively and in all actuality great. Instead I just nitpicked on a grammatical error.
I really feel bad and I'm really sorry...
Keep up the good work!
I was not offended and Thanks for taking the time write this followup. I do look at all my comments and try to learn from them and if it is something that I can fix to make my videos more enjoyable or understanding I will. I have gotten some great constructive comments in my time here. It is easy to fall into these habits, and having my audience sit and watch a video that is an hour long is a lot to ask. So thanks for your first comment and for your followup and for taking the time to watch my videos.
In USA that’s correct. In UK it’s both Dice, those heavy in like 40k and other Brit minis games say “dice” for both.
