i do a variation on the turned hangers: i turn them each time i wear something; and can't wear it again until EVERYTHING is turned. if it gets to the point that I have nothing that I will wear: it's time to get rid of the things that are left!! I have cut my clothes by 25% without it hurting!!

One caveat I have for things that didn’t get used like decor or clothing.... is what stage of life you are in. I was postpartum this year and obviously didn’t wear everything I usually would, and having a crawling baby, not all of the usual holiday decor that I love could come out for safety reasons.
If you had a major life shift within the last year, allowing yourself a little grace in your minimalist journey is ok!

Yes, I'm moving out of my parents house next year so I asked them to not get ride of spare pans, dishes, hangers etc when they were decluttering last week because I may need them. But once I moved out I will definitly make sure they get ride of everything I didn't need either lol

The most liberating piece of advice I got was: "If you haven't used it in the last year, you're not going to miss it." I feel like a free bird now. You don't remember the unused things you gave away. Never regretted a single thing. Never missed it. Loved the time/energy/space that came as a result much more than the feeling of security of having the 'just in case item' You feel lighter and more free. Ready and now able to actually live a meaningful life. I've wasted so many precious years managing and handling and sorting 'stuff'. I understand now what it means to be 'owned' by things.

Better to go through your Christmas decorations in late November so that you can donate them to the thrift store and they can sell them right away.

Old technology is a huge one for me. There’s a guilt that goes with it. How much was spent, etc. Taking a few hours and gathering everything up and taking them to be recycled is such a release! Not looking at them every time you open that drawer or bag is honestly such a relief and blessing moving forward.

    • @MessyMinimalist
      @MessyMinimalist  4 роки тому +3

Harley Andersen I agree about the guilt. It’s hard when you know how much was spent. I found it helped when I thought of it as a service: Yeah I spent money on it, but I also enjoyed it at one point in time. :) like you said, such a relief to be done with them!

I keep coming back to this video every now and then for some “pep talk” to remind me what I’m doing, aiming for and why. Paused half way through - got rid of “duplicates” - a spaghetti spoon thing with teeth, I always use tongs Dow so why keep it! Then tackled my DVD drawer, told hubby to download what we have on usb and get rid of the dvd, 3 drawers now down to 1/4 of a drawer. Feeling good. Got ride if t-shirts that I rarely use as it chokes me. It can go and choke someone else ;-) thank you for that pep talk. I sometimes think I’ve nothing more to declutter but doing this, you can always find something that crept in.

  • @rudyorpington3152

Fantasy self stuff is my bucket of uselessness. Projects to work on or complete; "systems" to put into place that I could never keep up with; all of the over-buying I did because, when beginning something, I tend to buy it all; that is what clutters up my life/mind even before I go deep declutter with my home. Along with the useless items comes the guilt for spending the money, vicious cycle. You have taught us to let go of the fantasy self and I rue the day I told my husband about that phrase! He has turned into a parrot--fantasy self, fantasy self. Love your videos.

He is 5yo and going to a specialist school for autistic kids. I have been so excited to wear my nicer clothes this year!! 😍❤😍
Make sure that, if you are like me and been putting certain things you love aside for a moment in the future, you don't just get rid of them because it's the thing UA-cam or society or whoever says to.... I know I would be soooooo disappointed if I had have done that!

Maybe it’ll go soon! 😊 “Failed experiments”- what a great way to say it. Strange how we feel like they might be successful another day but not today. By the way, I get such a kick out of your fashion shows - I have bought a lots of clothes for my imaginary self over the years that I’ve had to declutter. Honestly they range from all in black temptress to all in white lacey little girl looks, none of which are me. You make me laugh at myself!!😁 Blessings to you and your beautiful family for an amazing 2020!!

We have a small box of christmas decorations, not enough to decorate one tree. So instead of buying more, he have decided to decorate and hang gingerbread cookies instead. They look beautiful in the tree. We cut a small hole with a straw into the cookie before baking so we have somewhere to pass a string, and after baking we decorate them together with our daughter and hang them in our tree. It is a great activity for a family with children, plus after christmas you can eat them and you don't have to store them. Saves space, and it is a very ecofriendly solution.

Definitely prefer to declutter before going home for the holidays. It's nice to come back to a clean space and I can more easily fit the new items into my life. I try to keep a running list of things that will need to be replaced soon or that I'm interested in trying so that when people ask what I want for Christmas, it's ready. Cuts down on the number of IDK what to get you gifts. Also, that means that if I didn't get something I needed as a gift, I can buy it myself cheap during the after-Christmas sales.

When your phone "forces" you to declutter all apps on the 25th of December 😅 It crashed and didn't work properly afterwards, so I had to reset it to factory settings and reinstall all apps. So now it only has the once I use on a daily basis on it. At least it had one positive effect. 😁

Remember to use a prescription take-back program to dispose of expired medications and supplements. States and Townships usually have collection dates to keep others and the environment safe.

I've just removed a couple of 'part-used' tissues from my handbag (purse), but other than that, I don't have the other things. I don't count clothes just now as I'm on a weight change journey and plan to get back into certain garments soon. If not soon, then they go!

There is an app called Unroll Me and you attach your email to it to clear you off email lists in bulk. It's much faster than clicking on each unsub on every email!

Just wanted to point out that many prescription bottles can be donated or recycled! If you just look it up on google there is a good chance an organization accessible to you provides that service. A lot of the time they will go to places where doctors do not have bottles to give patients medicine. Super important! Also easy and eco-friendly. :)))

My husband gets about 1 email per month, and does not know how to unsubscribe. He is 65 and does not want to mess with all the technology. Neither of us has a smart phone, we have flip phones. I have a computer at home, so I don't want or need to be on the phone everywhere I go. When family comes over, they all sit on the couch and stare at their phones. You cannot even have a conversation with anyone. Their phones are all going off constantly, with all different rings. It is soooo annoying.

I love deleting emails. For diing it in batches I just search for a keyword like „newsletter“ or „order“, select all and then quickly scan through the list in case I actually do want to keep some of them (un-select those, then delete the rest with just one click)

Shoes is literally the one thing I keep to a minimum without trying. I have short, fat feet and wear a women’s 7W. It is so difficult to find shoes in my size in whatever the current fad is. I just wear Alegria dress shoes and my Sketchers tennis shoes. That is all. I might buy a pair of sandals or flip flops this summer.

Just advise ford sorting emails. Create a different folders for customer/friends and ect.. who send you email often and choose setting that new emails from them going to right folder straight away. You will still see that there are a news emails in that folder but it would be easy to sort rest of new emails . Most important email u need in future ( which you receive only once save in archive ) It will be much easier

I know in Canada if you have old medication you return it to 5he pharmacy and they can dispose if the pills, liquids, inhalers, etc and containers safely and correctly for you so you aren't just chucking them into landfills where animals can eat them and get hurt.

My pharmacy here doesn't take expired/ unused meds, but our police stations have secure drop boxes for disposing of them! Call your local police non emergency if you want to know where to properly dispose of medications!

I tried the trick with the hangers multiple times but it was a failed experiment because I keep forgetting what hanger belongs to what item. And you’d think the items I didn’t wear would be the ones left behind in the wardrobe, but nope! I like to pretend I’m gonna wear them by taking them on vacation.. 😓
