i saw one of these flying at an airshow in masterton in new zealand a few years ago, have to say it has the most unique sound i think i have ever heard, sounds like a flying tractor at low level.
The first "fiery" battering ram was performed on June 22, 1941 by the 27-year-old senior lieutenant Pyotr Chirkin of the 62nd Attack Aviation Regiment. Chirkin sent the pounded I-153 to a column of German tanks approaching the city of Stry (Western Ukraine). In total for the war years, his feat was repeated more than 300 people.
Taxiing to the runway in this plane is one of the last great adventures in this world: absolutely no forward visibility! My admiration goes to all the men and women who do it anyway.
Another of those aircraft I never thought I'd see operational. Right up there with with the I-16, Big engined Gee Bee, FW 190, early model Bf-109, Me-262. Waiting on the P-61
That is one sweet looking old bird. Few single row radial engines have a whisper like that. Makes me wonder if it's a Pratt-Whitney Wasp converted to a Soviet design. Have a model of her, and would love to give it a thorough look over to see the details so I could include them in the build. Thanks for sharing.
@tiverton I see. Wasn't aware that the I-153 had flaps, though... Oh, and that's an electrically powered inertia wheel starting the engine in this vid, not compressed air. You are right about the pneumatic gear, though. The original I-153s used in the Soviet Union used a Hucks starter; an auxiliary power unit mounted on a truck that connected a crankshaft to the propeller hub of the aircraft to crank the engine.
You are right. It has a similar version of engine. Original I-153 equiped a M-62 engine(ASh-62). This plane equiped ASh-62IR engine - version for transport aviation.
@Treetop64 I believe they did. It's a pneumatic starter. Electric pump charges up air bottle with compressed air and then uses single burst of that air to crank the engine. They also used compressed air for gear and flap operations.
+Andy Reid The culmination of the first 30 years of aviation technology, at least in the fighter field. Back when it still could be fun (assuming you weren't getting shot at).

109s were a diffrent breed altogether. can't really compare them. But they faced each other. But in reality i-15 model was loosing in speed. It's actually an interesting question. The more blades you have the less efficient the prop is, but more thrust and more air resistance. Theorecially the most effecient prop is a single infinely long blade. But you can't do a prop like that.

A gorgeous airplane. I love interwar biplanes and the I-153 has always been one of my faves.
Right? They were almost out of place, yet they fit. Heck, the I-153 could give a Messerschmit a bit of trouble in the hands of a good pilot.

Lovely sound and a beautifully restored aircraft.
