    Great surprise to see this little russian warbird there in action. The Sound of this 1000hp engine is awesome.
    It seems to be some kind of test flight with touch and go .. far away the plane made some aerobatics, sadly to far away and high to make a video .. the first try to land this little beast was not really successful, but second try it was smooth and clean.

    What an awesome sound. If I remember right this fighter wasn't much of a fight against German fighters. Awesome to see one flying. That sound is awesome and it sounds exactly the same as the old war news reels. Looks like it falls right out of the sky when bringing it in for a landing, what a sink rate.

      @snowstalker36 5 років тому +6

      While the I-16 did give up a big advantage in setting the initiative due to being slower and with a lower ceiling, I would say overall pilot quality was the bigger factor. The I-16 had advantages it could press, especially at lower altitudes, but it would be up to the pilot to use them. It was even more demanding than the Me-109 to fly (which was itself famously difficult) so a below average pilot was at a severe disadvantage.
      A bigger problem for the I-16 was that it pretty much set the bar the other more famous WW2 fighters were designed to beat. It's like saying the Zero didn't do well against the Hellcat and Corsair. Well... roughing up zeroes was the whole point of building those planes wasn't it?

    • @keithwhisman
      @keithwhisman 5 років тому

      snowstalker36 the BF109 was not built in response to the I16 though. The BF109 was made from the design of the civilian BF108 and was the to be the first fighter of the new illegal Luftwaffe built quietly in secret. The world was already heading towards single engine mono wing fighters before the I16, the soviets just beat the world to the punch but aircraft around the world were already in the design stages before the Spanish Civil War including jet fighters.
      The problem with the Zero fighter wasn’t that it was high tech and super advanced because it wasn’t, it was extremely light with a good powerful engine though not super powerful. The problem was that it was small and light weight and didn’t have any kind of defensive armor to protect any of its systems or the pilot but it was extremely maneuverable making it dangerous to dogfight at low altitudes as everyone else around the world built bigger heavier aircraft with large powerful engines and armor to protect its sensitive systems and the pilots who flew them making them less maneuverable at low altitudes than the zero however pretty much every US and British fighter could out run a zero and just climb away from it at a distance turn around and dive down at the slower lower flying zeros strafing them into ribbons. Yeah Hellcat was designed to fight the zero but it was always easier to boom and zoom a zero than to dig fight it. The Japanese tried other aircraft but ended up switching to suicide kamikaze tactics instead of trying to build newer faster fighters.

      @@keithwhisman late in the war Japan did produce a modern high altitude 1800 horsepower fighter. I've never seen one in person, but it appears that there is very poor forward or side visibility, the pilot can't really judge the approach when flying straight in. Look at them taxiing around 7:30 on. The cockpit sits far back and the wings are far forward. You can see the pilot is in a slip most of the way down just so they can see where they are going. The main gear has a narrow track and it has a short arm from the mains to the tailwheel to make matters worse. You have to be a darn good pilot to take that thing up for the first time!

      None of the original I-16 were preserved in a flying condition and only 2 or 3 survived at all. Several planes (4 or 6) were built from scratch in Russia at Novosibirsk in 1990-s for a foreign collectors (from New Zeland, I believe). They used some original parts, found in museums and at a crash sites as templates to build a new ones. They also had a full set of original production drawings. The engines, used on those are modern variant of M-62, which is still used on An-2 untility biplane and still in production in Russia and China. The props are also non-original, since modern engines have reduced take-off power and lower RPMs, then those, used in the 1930-40.
      The same workshop, that built these I-16s, also reconstructed I-153, I-15, MiG-3 and IL-2.

    When the I-16 was first produced in 1934, it was the most advanced fighter plane in the world. The I-16 was this first unbraced cantilever low wing fighter with retractable landing gear.
    Unfortunately the pilots low seat position and the big round engine and airframe made vision on landing very difficult. America WW2 Navy aircraft with round engines had a seat that could be adjusted upward for better vision on landing.

      ziggy 2shus "When the I-16 was first produced in 1934, it was the most advanced fighter plane in the world."
      It never ceases to amaze me how fast aircraft design advanced during the 1930's. If a country built a top of the line fighter with a cutting edge design in 1930, it was hopelessly obsolete by 1935.
      France got caught up in that trap. They invested in a huge military buildup in the early thirties, only to find that their aircraft designs were already outdated by the time Germany started getting frisky. (not just aircraft either)
      How does one go back to the French Chamber of Deputies and Senate and say... "Hey, you know all those millions of francs we spent on planes a couple of years ago? Yeah... All wasted. We need more millions of francs.".

    Despite its crudity of construction, the Polikarpov I-16 was a plane *WAY* ahead of its time when it first became operational. It was well-built, and could easily out-fly contemporary fighters of the time. That's why when the Spanish Republican Air Force started using them in 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War they quickly gained air superiority of the Spanish Nationalists flying German and Italian fighters until the Bf 109B and C models showed up in 1937 with their vastly superior diving speed.

    This airplane approaches frighteningly fast for a landing and doesn't seem to want to slow down during the landing roll! I wonder what the forward visibility is like with that huge radial monster up-front.

    • @lesizmor9079
      @lesizmor9079 6 років тому +1

      Yes, fast indeed. The wing is short, designed for speed; airspeed has to stay pretty fast for landing. And short-coupled fuselage makes it worse-- not enough rudder authority at slow speed. What I don't understand is why no use of flaps for landing. Or why no flaps in the design?

      There is no forward visibility when landing. Literally. You can try yourself in War Thunder (free to play), and you can see me landing one with much smaller radial - namely I-153, the "previous" USSR main fighter before I-16, - using pilot view, simulator mode, in this video: ua-cam.com/video/bReHrgTtyb8/v-deo.html . P.S. Obviously never try that trick wave-breaker landing in real life in _any_ plane, of course. :)

    Landing the Mosca was an work of art, it can not be teached properly and must be got and undestood by its pilot by himself. Its was a very muscular machine to hold, and a very nervous plane reaching the stall point on nose high attitude. She descended on a steep diagonal left wing down attitude if you let her go. It got a lot of accidents during the landing and during the takeoff too. The second try shows this vicious landing characteristics. Pilots who master it could land it on a rough field tho.
    During WWII the URSS still got his kill share with "the little donkey", even until 1943 when it was relegated to second line duty.
    When a plane earns a nickname like "fly", "lil' donkey", "rat", "snoobnose", "shorty", you know got his enemy's respect.

      It was. Every notice how a ton of the famous WW2 fighters debut in 1936? That's because this thing came out in 1934 and scared the crap out of everyone. Most people only imagine the Soviets post Stalin's purges in their head when thinking of the country, but in the early 30s the dream was still alive and they were a world leader in many technology areas. Aviation was one of them. Honestly, their aircraft designs remained pretty dang good throughout, they were just let down by continually behind the curve powerplant teams.

    3:25 thats a decent side slip, these things are exceedingly difficult to see out of. The large engine blocks 100% of the runway and forward visibility at slow speed (high angle of attack). You can see that he did not flare on that attempt, which could have damaged the landing gear. He probably mis-judged the height due to having little to no experience in this type. Which has a very tall fuselage perch.
    This thing looks like it flies and lands like an over gross Pitts with half its wing area missing.
