Yup. You don't know what the creative process is until you spend time being creative. I didn't realize it until I rented a space and went there every day to paint. Oh, what a blast! I gave up that space and brought everything home. I am glad I had that space but I can do the same at home. Being aware of everything happening each day is inspiration. For instance, I bought a couple of baseball-type shirts that were on sale at work. Tried them on when I got home. Liked the way they fit. Washed them and wore one one day and realized I could turn it into a fun dress if I bought a couple more larger on-sale T-shirts from work, I could cut them up, ruffle them and add te ruffles to the bottom of the BB tee. Colors. I saw a combination of a certain type of yarn and I immediately sketched out a cardigan I'd like to make using those colors. Breakfasts. I put a lot of care into combining foods to make myself a big breakfast every morning and the way it looks on my plate prompts me to snap a photo to sketch it later . I posted these photos so much a friend commented I should put them together and write a cookbook. Crows and Cardinals. Every time I hear them in the back yard, I go out to say hello or whistle back at them (the Cardinals) and just watch them till they go off. I just love them. I've written a story about the Cardinal that knocked at the front bay window every day for a year--true story. I might make one up about a Crow; though, a couple did peck and pull at my new windshield wipers on my car until the rubber part of the wipers were successfully all gone. I have a picture of that. I love mixing paint colors and doodling over it with a calligraphy pen or markers and then cutting up the papers for bookmarks or cards. It's always play, always surprising. --KateColors

Wonderful katecolours. You put more to “for the birds”. Beauty is inspirational as is your story. Thanks.

We all have our path I knew someone who was pretty much in love with the guitar and became very much an expert and was fulfilled by it. I do agree that creative people are usually life-long learners and it's best to explore all kinds of Arts and Passions but I have to say there is a beauty and an admiration that I've always had for somebody that immersed themselves into their own craft / medium and just became an expert in that Medium. I guess it just comes down to balance as always to immerse yourself in your passion/art while keeping the doors open to reading, and listening to all things in other creative areas as well. For me I learned later in life much of this is time management; time for your passion/s and time for learning and time for everything else!

When the artist himself, says he’s a “man about town”, you know it’s going to be interesting.

You may enjoy the UA-cam channel called, "Art21." Short docs about a variety of artists. Inspiring!

Wait ? What? Someone with a G or M who has a knee scar? Mich.... or Gib...both last names. A knee scar from a bike fall that gouged the knee and left it bloody. Untapped potential? Are you talking to me? I've retired from teaching twice...first time didn't take because I didn't know what to do with myself. Now as I wander and wonder through my second retirement and desire to draw, you are telling me so much...why to draw, what keeps me from drawing, how to have a sketchbook, inspiration, finding solace in drawing, what to draw...will it work? All I can say is that two years ago you were talking to me. I finally got the message.💥🙂👍

Fascinating discussion. When I was studying to become a teacher, we were taught how to teach math using bases other than base10. This brought us back to the point of struggling with "just carry" when adding or "just borrow" when subtracting. And we would switch around so we didn't become too accustomed to say base6 or base2. We were learning both the why and how these math processes work, as well as the feelings of confusion, frustration and questioning our students often experience.

Hope all of that understanding didn’t get in the way.

Really like the passage around 38 minutes...JML talking about being in the familiar (setting) but trying to find the novel in that. Which, perhaps, is not easy but necessary ...and I would add not just as artists but in so many situations in our daily lives.

When I took a health degree - We studied all the ologies. It was necessary to study sociology, psychology, philosophy and nutrition - Then your breath of knowledge enabled you to understand and see things deeper and more clearly. The same applies to art I have found. Really enjoyed listening to you - We need to be challenged 👊

My name starts with M, I have a scar on my knee (who doesn’t), and I have a question for the Oracle. Will watching 20 hours of UA-camrs demonstrating paper stretching convince me to try large format watercolor? All that messing about with boards, and tape, and staplers would cut into my sketchbook time, but would a 22” x 30” chickadee be worth it? Thanks and carry on, love the podcast.

Being fed more of the same... I think that leads to what's referred to as confirmation bias. It's often used in reference to people consuming news from their preferred media outlet, but the idea transfers to other areas of our life as you so nicely explored. When I was listening, the phrase "That resonates with me" popped into my head. I've used the phrase, and it often feels good when something strikes a familiar chord. But too much of a good thing can be destructive. With a resonant frequency, you can make a champagne glass sing. Sustain resonance for too long though, and you can shatter that same glass, or destroy a bridge. Feed yourself emotionally, intellectually, spiritually in a healthful way, just as you would physically through diversity.

Enjoyed your podcast today. It has gotten my creative juices going again. I have been in a rut lately. I like the idea of adding to the soup pot. I’m going to work on that. Thank you both.

I listen to France Musique - I live in France - is that what you are listening to? I love it so much. It really has made me love jazz so much more than I used to. Loving your podcast. I am fortunate (and unfortunate) in that I am never in what is 'comfortable', because I am continually forced into a different culture. Harder to do when you are 65. So loving what you do. Thanks

I seem to like the words 'love/loving' a lot! But that's probably because I am so comfortable and happy with what you are doing - and drawing every day now (although it seems pointless!). Thanks so much.

This is a good topic and please address it again in various approaches. We all get bored, want to quit when the going gets difficult or there is little support from others. Keeping your discussion personal helps me find more motivation.
