Terry was my best friend growing up in Swan Lane, Stoke Heath, we lived at 394 he lived 6 six doors down, we went to Sidney Stringer (Frederick Birds) school together & played football up the Morris common every day after school, I was Ernie Hunt & he was George Best who else, his older sister Theresa who was in love with Asa Hartford of WBA kept saying Terry would be a star because he was special, we went to the Locarno disco every Saturday morning hence his lyrics in this song & we lost touch when he went to Cardinal Wiseman. God Bless You my old friend until we meet again, love Craig Smith.
I still have their first album as an original on vinyl. At the time, as a poor, working class school boy, I thought their music was just relevant to me. Now with the advent of UA-cam I can see it affected many people. The Specials were "Special". They were/are the only group that talk about every day problems affecting people, especially the youth: loneliness, apathy, meaning of life, boredom, the rat race, racism, urban decline, etc. What no one mentions is the genius of Jerry Dammers. I was gutted when they broke up. I was initially very excited when they reformed but then realised that maybe they were trying to recreate the past but then 40+ years later, it was too late. In addition without Dammers, it didn't feel right. The group abruptly disbanded after he spent a year composing Ghost Town, their biggest track to date. I greatly respected the fact that he did not join out of principle. He could have done so, earned good money, etc but he did not forget what happened and out of principle as he probably felt he was wronged he did not rejoin. Lynval Golding actually states that it was only after he and the other two left that they realised how much of a genius Jerry Dammers was! He was/is the genius behind The Specials. He was the creative influence behind the music, the composition, the lyrics and song writing. He is an out and out legend! RIP Terry Hall.
This resonate with anyone born in 1960's. The Specials were our teenage years, the lyrics were true to all of us. Terry was my teenage crush, posters on my walk, had all their albums. Brings me to tears to think he has gone. RIEP Tezza 🙏🏽🕊❤️
I used to do that kind of thing on Friday night and Saturday morning or sometimes on a Saturday night and Sunday morning, so I can definitely relate to this song. But not anymore, sadly.
"Friday Night, Saturday Morning" Out of bed at eight am Out my head by half past ten Out with mates and dates and friends That's what I do at weekends I can't talk and I can't walk But I know where I'm going to go I'm going watch my money go At the Locarno, no When my feet go through the door I know what my right arm is for Buy a drink and pull a chair Up to the edge of the dance floor Bouncers bouncing through the night Trying to stop or start a fight I sit and watch the flashing lights Moving legs in footless tights I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning I like to venture into town I like to get a few drinks down The floor gets packed the bar gets full I don't like life when things get dull The hen party have saved the night And freed themselves from drunken stags Having fun and dancing in A circle round their leather bags I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning But two o'clock has come again It's time to leave this paradise Hope the chip shop isn't closed Cos' their pies are really nice I'll eat it in the taxi queue Stand in someone else's spew Wish I had lipstick on my shirt Instead of piss stains on my shoes I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning Sing along folks !
The Specials meant an awful lot to me, growing up during The 70's. Terry Hall died on my eldest daughter's birthday which, was a real kick up the jacksy. No more Specials, just as there was about to be more, New, Specials, is the sum of life's cruelty. Rest In Peace to all the dead Specials.
Bought this single aged 11… A side Ghost Town & B side “Why” & “Friday Night Saturday Morning”… I’m trying to think of a better Uk overall single but struggling.. Maybe “Strawberry Fields “ & “Penny Lane”… but Nah…RIP Terry

Poor Terry. So poignant hearing these beautifully real lyrics now... A world away from older age and death. God bless Terry Hall, working class hero.
RiP Terry. This was the stuff, honest and real.🇬🇧
@@pattyo14 The best song he has ever written. My god, all the times I sang this song. Pissed and struggling to find my way home at 4 am. RIP Terry.

Exactly .
Plus we also used to chill with a few African woodbines 😁 🎶 🚬
Hope the chip shop isn't closed Terry... All the best.
Now that I’m sober, I interpret the somber way in which this song is sung so differently.
RIP Terry. No one else could have written this.
"...instead of piss stains on my shoes!" It still gets me, even after 40 years.
Probably one of THE greatest B'sides. Father Ted's pal should've played this at the Craggy Island raffle, not just Ghost Town

Great song
RIP Terry. Gone too soon. fr Derrick Staple. Cousin to Neville
I used to do that kind of thing on Friday night and Saturday morning or sometimes on a Saturday night and Sunday morning, so I can definitely relate to this song. But not anymore, sadly.
"Friday Night, Saturday Morning"
Out of bed at eight am
Out my head by half past ten
Out with mates and dates and friends
That's what I do at weekends
I can't talk and I can't walk
But I know where I'm going to go
I'm going watch my money go
At the Locarno, no
When my feet go through the door
I know what my right arm is for
Buy a drink and pull a chair
Up to the edge of the dance floor
Bouncers bouncing through the night
Trying to stop or start a fight
I sit and watch the flashing lights
Moving legs in footless tights
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
I like to venture into town
I like to get a few drinks down
The floor gets packed the bar gets full
I don't like life when things get dull
The hen party have saved the night
And freed themselves from drunken stags
Having fun and dancing in
A circle round their leather bags
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
But two o'clock has come again
It's time to leave this paradise
Hope the chip shop isn't closed
Cos' their pies are really nice
I'll eat it in the taxi queue
Stand in someone else's spew
Wish I had lipstick on my shirt
Instead of piss stains on my shoes
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
I go out on Friday night and I come home on Saturday morning
Sing along folks !
Always 💔
