We adopted a dog ten years ago, having no idea what he was. There is no doubt he is a black mouth cur. He was rescued in the South. He is still with us and is the best dog we've ever had, by a long margin. He almost seems human. He is very sensitive and submissive but sounds like he will tear through anyone who comes to our door or shows up unannounced. Couldnt be aweeter and more protective of our daughter as she has grown up with him. When he passes, there's no doubt what breed of dog we will be looking for.
Hey brother thanks for the kind words and watching the video. She's a beast, getting her into the woods this year, she's treeing everything in sight and keeping them there. Stay safe my friend 👍
I just got a mountain cur mix puppy in January, she’s about 9-10 months old now, didn’t know anything about the breed but she’s ended up being just about the BEST dog I’ve ever had! Must be an amazing breed!
Agreed. Rest in peace Peanut and Pepper 🌶 😢. It's been 8 months since Peanut went under. 12 months since Pepper went. They have an ingraved stone on my property. That should tell the story of this breed. Loyal loving ❤ and fearless
She is beautiful, please post more videos. I love my 3 yr old black mouth cur, she's my best friend enjoy running her in the woods, or playing ball, or just laying by the fire place. Very intelligent, sweet, and great with my grandkids.
Thank you so much! I will!! Awwww I love curs! They are the absolute best dogs. Intelligent sweet and great with kids describes them to a T. Thank you for watching. Message some pictures of her! I love seeing pups 😊👍
Curs are the best dogs hands down. But they require lots of patience, super smart but hesitant to train. But once they learn, they will obey and aim constantly to please you. You won't regret it.
Freaking cute, they are the absolute best dogs, be patient with her and also strict. She will be a damn good all purpose hound for you. Keep me posted on how she's doing 👍 also what's her name?
@@MinimalistOutdoors Maggie. Picked her up from a local breeder here in TN who’s been breeding them since the 70’s, she comes from good blood and is picking up treeing fast
I have a rescue dog. I was told he was a Mountain Cur. He looks different, with his brindle coat, but his build, his temperament, his gait... he looks just like Cedar but in camo!
@@MinimalistOutdoors It's a breed I'd never heard of until I found the ad for my Rufus. Is there a difference between a black mouth cur and a mountain cur?
@@kevintaylor791 there really isn't any difference Mountain Cur is the breed and black mouth is the appearance, your Rufus may be from a different region of the south eastern US where all Mountain Curs are from, black mouth like cedar are Tennessee and Alabama origin and I think your may be Ohio and Virginia.
@@MinimalistOutdoors He came from death row in a shelter in Kentucky. A local rescue here in Canada brought him up. He's the best dog I've ever had. I'm no hunter, but with no training he trees squirrels any chance he gets. He's a bundle of energy, but knows when its time to snuggle and CANNOT get enough.

Thanks for sharing. She's wonderful. We have a male that just turned 16 weeks. His name is Shooter. I really do need to make a video. Hope you keep posting videos. I also noticed your wildflower plot.
Thank you very much for watching! So cool that you have the same breed! They are very overlooked and underrated. Yeah the wild flower plot adds lot of pretty character to our property. I will continue to make videos with her in them, she's gonna me my hunting companion.
@@MinimalistOutdoors Great! I also love your thumb nail pic of the Mountain Man with his dog! Hope I can find it in images. Edit = our dog also comes to whistles & "come". There are many similarities.
I adopted a dog from a kill center, had no idea what breed Gumbo was, but I instantly feel in love with those ears! I did a DNA and found 50% Mountain Cur and 50% Australian cattle dog. I had never heard of a Cur, I was his 5th adopter, a few toys and two walks a day and I am so happy with him. He is a great companion he just doesn’t know whether to hunt or herd. I am not a good trainer, have been to three, he will not stay in a fenced yard, and once he escapes he’s gone and will not come to me, I really could use advice on this.
I'm glad you have a good companion in Gumbo congrats. My best advice is since he has the stubbornness of a cur in him I recommend giving him tasks like finding stuff, do this off leash with a buzzer and if he runs give the command to come and give a buzz, if that does not work, bribery helps. My wife and I take cedar out on walks in WMAs and take her hunting, curs are treeing hounds which means they are bred to run and scout ahead and alert you as their owner that there is game treed or threats ahead. We noticed Cedar runs far ahead but never loses sight of us, she just patrols independently. Gumbo is a mix of two working dogs I think he just needs an outlet 😊👍 best of luck to you
Great video! I just adopted a "border collie mix" , but I'm thinking she's actually a Mountain Cur. She's black and white, muscular, barks, but not too much and barks up trees. Love learning about the breed!
Most long tailed hounds tend to rely on speed where docked tailed canines are the 'quarter horses' of the feist and cure breeds. Plus they're easier to position on the bench for showing.
@@Ironislander4302 I agree in part. Docked tails and clipped ears along with removal of dew claws is performed when pups are very young so its not as traumatic; similar to circumcision of a boy at birth.
The tails aren’t docked. About 1/2 of mt curs are born with stubby tails! If both the parents have stubby tails more of the puppies will! We have a breeder female for Stevens cur and a husky cur mix. Wonderful pets!
Beautiful dog. My son just yesterday adopted a half mountain cur and jagdterrior? Not sure on spelling. I am impressed with the dog right off the bat. He's only 6 months old, but I think he's pretty sharp.
New Sub about to get me a mountain Cur here in January I’m excited going from English bulldog to mountain cur I’m very curious to see how he does with my son I hope really good from what I researched they are
Thank you for being a new subscriber! Ill add you to the drawing to win a lever action leather sleeve. I have to say that mountain curs are the best all round dog. They are a breed of hound so they are loud when they wanna be. The males are more vocal than the females. Best thing I have to say is that they are super intelligent and learn fast with repetition and positive reenforcement and treats. Ours is a female and she is a great instinctual hunter and tracker, give your mountain cur plenty to do so they feel important, they thrive in an environment where they can succeed at simple tasks and they will lay their life down for ya. They have to be the most under rated dog in the world. Im sure your cur will treat your son great. Thank you for reaching out my friend.
The cur is the most generic dog but there's a reason their owners swear by them. They are the best dog!

Funny you say that about hunting and herding. Know some folks around in Appalachia who have Mountain Curs that'll do both.
How was the DNA testing experience like? Was it a mail in service? How much? Just got a cut today! 😎

How’s gumbos training going?
Curs can be born with any length tail. Probably wasn't docked. My cur dog was born with a long tail and her brother has a stub tail. Born with it

Some mountain cur have natural bob tails. May not be docked, unless the breeders told you they did. Which would make sense for predator hunting dogs.
Came to find out hers was natural
She is beautiful. As she gets older be careful with strangers coming to the house she will become very protective of the family.
I hope she won't go over board. We have been trying to socialize her as much as possible
There's only two breeds of dogs. There's Original Mountain Curs, and all the lesser breeds of dogs. 😉

Our male can be territorial and grouchy. Growls when he thinks someone is moving in on his space or person. Very skittish and hypervigilant.
They can be that way, the best thing to do is get him well socialized and make it a positive experience
Born with no tail
