  • I wanted to touch on a general idea of what cur dogs are and their history. many people have no idea what cur dogs are and where they come from and what they're used for. This is just a breif description of it. I'm no expert on this matter but I have some knowledge that I can share!

I have a BMC that I rescued. She's on the smaller side - 35lbs - with beautiful markings. I never knew about the breed, but now ... I'm a believer. She's the calmest, most sensitive, smartest and loving dog I've ever had. She's a city girl, so she needs a lot of walking and playtime - but, I don't mind. She's a joy!

Thank you for this. I am from Alabama and remember having Black Mouth Curs on the farm as a child. I’m now 36, moving back to the farm, and want to get a Cur again. Our two were loyal, fierce and protective. Weary of strangers but docile to our family. They would offer up predator animals by bringing them to the back porch to let us know what they had found. We rewarded them and loved them.

A few years ago I had three. They sure saved me and my horses a lot of tracks, going after cattle in some thick brush and rocks. I could tell my horses even appreciated the work those dogs put in. Best dogs I ever had, sure do miss them. Awesome breed, that I'm kind of thankful not a whole lot of people know about.

I LOVE BMC pups. My boy was dumped on the side of a county ass road in Oklahoma as a baby, w his 2 brothers. He's been a blessing! I've had my boy for 15 years and he's never had any health issues. Not even when my other dog got kennel cough. They were boarded together at the same place for the same amount of time and vaxed. He's about 45 lbs and a bit more of a thic boy, a total snug and hunter. He often is the "big spoon" bc yes my dogs sleep in the bed w me. Don't even want to think about the number of times he's brought a unalived animal to the back door. We have lived in an apartment for the past 5ish years and he's been totally fine. We take our walks and he sleeps a lot. He's very smart and after all these years we know how to talk to each other so his needs are met very well.

The story behind old yeller... The producer wanted a black mouth cur yet they couldn't find one that could be used in the movie. So they went with a lab mixed with a mastiff... I loved my black mouth curs. Also had blue lacey. Awesome dog's.

I ended up with a mountain cur. Knew of the breed, and seen a couple black mouth cur( I'm in northern Indiana. Not a common dog up here). What I'm getting at here is I read These dogs will hunt birds to bear with you. I've been training mine primarily for upland birds, Ruffed grouse, Pheasant, quail, and dove retrieval That she was doing at 5 months. I've had Her on pen raised quail, grouse and pheasant wings. She is doing fantastic. She does OK with retrieving. But after all it's not a retrieving breed. I've had her out with friends that have Brittany's spaniels. She is much more controllable and close Is working. Besides all that she's a sweetheart. Everybody in tractor supply Knows her. I heard one lady say , here comes miss America.

These look like good dogs, provided you don't live in the city. I've only seen two Catahoula dogs, but I've heard and read some impressive stories about them. My father told me that on the farm back in Canada, our family had a dog named "Billou." When it was time for the cows to be brought in for the milking, Billou was told to get them, and in a few minutes, the cows would be plodding down the lane with Billou in the rear, encouraging the stragglers. Now, Billou was a dog of uncertain breed (at least to my father), and I've wondered whether he was a type of cur, since he was so obedient, intelligent, and a perfect all-purpose dog for a farm. Of course, Quebec is a far cry from the Appalachian mountains, but I'm wondering whether the curs might have been bred and kept that far north. Nice job you do here, and very informative. Just where do you live?

Curs are very much a Southeastern breed. Although it's possible that your dog could have been bred as a mongrel with a similar purpose.

Brooo, thank you! For sharing there’s not a lot of videos or outspoken bloodlines unless you know the people in the area. Probably a good thing now that I think of it. The most information I got was from the creator of the Plummer’s Line Catahoula
Raymond Plummer is the name and miss Katie McKee was the breeder. There’s a many good reasons the NALC registry slogan is “not everyone needs a catahoula” I’ll say that! Sad to see an uprise in popularity and now having to rehome because they had no idea what they were getting. The coat is not the only thing leopard like about these dogs 🤙❤️💯🐕🐾🐶

Pioneer Dogs…great clip..I run Mountain Curs…you won’t find a more tenacious gritty breed. Gave you a follow check out the clip with my male with his introduction to a coon. I did a long write up with their history. Cur dogs have a stronger bite force than almost all other breeds. Pound for pound between 200 and 400psi

Best cur dog I've ever seen came from Florida. I believe he called it a Parten Cur. It was given to him by a rancher family out that way.

Thanks for the video. I have always respected working dogs. Growing up my uncle and grandfather had short haired pointers and a beautiful red Irish setter. All good dogs but the setter would get full of kukkleburrs and we boys would have to spend an hour picking and cutting those things out of his hair.

Curs are basically hunting dogs designed to hunt a wide variety of game. The focus is on skills and temperament over appearance. I know a decent amount of knowledge regarding dog breeds.
