Hey (Weird) Coffee People, creator of the Filtru app here. It's great to have my work featured in James' video. Just wanted to mention that the Android app will be back! I'm just a solo developer working on this app so it takes me a little longer to bring all the useful features over to another platform. ❤

    Thanks for a shoutout, James!
We hope that all the weird coffee people watching your videos will have an easier way to find tasty coffee in Europe.
You summarised the challenges of developing a Mobile App like ours pretty accurately. It's not something you build once-the database updates and communication with cafes are daily tasks of our team. It's both fun and frustrating. Donations are very appreciated, but they are a limited resource for costly mobile app development. We had to develop the ECT platform and content first to be able to work on something we dreamed of back in 2014.
The biggest surprise for us, is that the app reaches very (normal) coffee people who would probably never watch videos on coffee UA-cam ☕😅

Downloaden right away and noticed some recently opened specialty coffee places were already in there with details and all. Thank you for the effort, very nice to know that visiting new places does not need to go without good coffee!

    • @nstarkd9951

I downloaded the app after watching this video. Here are my two suggestions in case you are interested:
      - It would be great if people could rate places as well as drinks they had so one could pick a place which makes great espresso even though their filter coffee is mediocre.
      - There are a lot of great coffee places that are missing in the app. I saw that there is a "Suggest a cafe" section but it looks like it doesn't work that well. I think you can pick some ambassadors all around the world for that.
Of course these are rough ideas and they need to be analyzed further. Good luck.

On the cafe finder thing, recently i was in Mexico city and my brother in law got me a "Coffee Passport"
Its a physical little paper booklet that you can get in any of the speciality coffee shops across the city that participate in the scheme.
You get a stamp when you visit a coffee shop and that comes with some little benefits. 10% off your order, money off whole beans etc.
It is a fantastic little thing and incentivises you to visit other shops and try their coffee. I think a quarter of my 23kg bag on the flight back was just coffee beans i had bought there 😂

There's a Coffee Route book for coffee shops in Cape Town that I got a while back, although I lived in Cape Town for over 30 years, I discovered at least 10 other coffee shops that I now go to regularly. It also has a "coffee passport" and pretty much every shop I went to the owners were chuffed that I discovered their place via the book.

I played both Coffee Talk games on my Xbox, largely because they're quite easy and if anyone else does Microsoft Rewards you'll know of the requirements to earn achievements for quests. The weirdest part of it (from a coffee POV, the story line is very odd) is that the same machine is used to make coffee, tea, hot chocolate and any other drink in the game.

It's got similar "helping customers with their problems" mechanics, plus you get to grow, roast, and ferment your own tea leaves in addition to making lattes and such. It's SO delightful.
If you like tycoon and/or mystery games, "Coffee Noir" is also really fun and a surprisingly realistic coffee roaster management simulator.

Not an app you missed, but a point I think many will miss in this video:
The experience with the bombardment of adds, and terribly unsatisfying free-to-play game at the end, are _deeply_ connected to the fact that you felt the need to excuse an app for costing £1.50. How easily do we (rightfully) spend that amount on coffee?
To everyone: If you’re in a position to do so, _please_ pay for software from time to time. Either by buying it, or donating to open-source projects. Things like predatory "casino” games and surveillance capitalism thrives on us refusing to pay even negligible amounts of stuff we still use a lot…

Why is this “genuinely important”? The approach you suggest is valid, but it’s equally valid for content creators to have a mental (or expressed) image in their mind of who their audience is. And I think most content creators think their audience is similar to themselves, and that makes sense as they try to be inspirational or tribal. The audience numbers will give the feedback that this is working for them or not through their views. Your belief that it’s important that they all think the way you do just isnt valid.

I used filtru coffee app by the time I first watched James Hoffmann and I saved your V60 recipe there!
Sadly, over time, I don't feel like I want to input the data - it's tedious, fun at first, but... yeah, I only want to drink my coffee and that's the only thing I want to do in the morning. The app will still stay in my phone though, that James's recipe will be forever stored there.

I have aeromatic installed even though I don't often use an aeropress, because it is the best resource I have found for translating grind settings between grinders. For example if I know this person's V60 recipe says about 40 clicks on a Comandante or 17 on an Encore or whatever I can figure out that that's 85 on my Kingrinder K6 (these numbers are all made up but you get the idea).
There may be another resource for that and it's not the most straightforward to do in Aeromatic but it works fairly well to put in the grind setting and grinder you know and then switch to the grinder you want to know.

  • @fokcuk
    @fokcuk 7 місяців тому +3

Grind size was (and probably still is) the hardest thing to master. The app that has the best grind size suggestion for your specific grinder and coffee, would be the one to use. I don't know of any as of yet that do that

One app that I use, although it's quite niche and specific to one model of grinder. The Beanie app for the Fellow Opus. No BT connection or anything it just helps you understand the weird second tier micro adjustments you can make to the grinder. Without that app I would have NEVER bothered to use the micro adjustments.

I installed coffee cup guru (styled with dots but not actually a link) on my phone about 8 years ago when I got a V60. It gets used about once every month or so when I decide to do something other than my standard V60 or Aeropress technique. I used it a lot more before I got a set of scales with a built in timer! Brew apps are handy when you're trying to figure out what works or doesn't, or as an additional tool to help your accuracy.

Think of it like the numerous books rating and characterizing wines form every vineyard and vintage. Knowing the flavor profiles of different estates plus quality and recommended roasting profiles would be great.

Mobile games are rarely good. You need to play Coffee Talk on PC, that game looks weird but trust me: They really put love in development, you make every step of every recipe (not a "coffee simulator" but still) and you crate a bond with your costumers, listening about their lives and creating new recipes for them to help with life choices.

Apparently I'm just gonna rec these to everyone with good taste in coffee-based games, but- "Little Corner Tea House" is an absolutely delightful mobile game with limited ads (no interstitials / banners, you only have to watch them if you want the rewards) where you make coffees and teas to order, as well as grow, ferment, and roast your own tea leaves.
"Coffee Noir" is a mystery detective game where your character goes undercover as a new-in-town coffee roaster, and it's a surprisingly realistic management sim where you have to source good quality beans, decide what roasts to offer, and balance supply and demand. It's neat :)

As someone who has made games in the past, and therefore fully aware of what goes into designing a game, it was extremely satisfying to watch James describe how infuriating and pointless that simple phone game is, to the point of being mad at how much time he spent on it, yet recognizing that it was because a part of his brain wanted to keep making more money in the silly simulation. :D That's exactly how most phone games are. Also adding ads every two minutes is another sadly common theme.

I use Source for a coffee shop finder. More or less, it's good. I like an app like that for times I want to explore a bit and find a new place. Like you said though, the biggest downfall I've seen is it staying current. There are a lot of shops in my area that are either closed, or a new place took it over, or a shop opened a new location. Those don't end up on the list. They have a way to notify of things like that, but I don't know if they actually have resources to monitor and update it.
