PLEASE do "Things Not To Say to People With Invisible Illnesses/Disabilities"! My older sister has a plethora of problems (Evans Syndrome, Celiac disease, Aspergers, 2 types of anemia, a congenital heart defect, and she had a stroke in 2015, etc. etc. etc.) and I'm so tired of hearing people say to her stuff like "But you don't look sick"... "It can't be that bad if you're up and walking around and doing stuff"... "You're just making it up for attention"... "I've never heard of that so it must not be too serious"... "Stop complaining, there are people who are ACTUALLY sick"... It's infuriating and I want people to be more educated about invisible illnesses.
Or when people say "no, you don't look disabled so I'm not going to give you my chair that you need in order to not pass out/get ulcers/have chronic pain/etc."
Old people on buses stare at you if you don't have a walking stick/wheelchair. Even then, most don't seem to care. I wonder how they feel if you stuck a disabled bu pass in their face? I would but I hate arguing with idiots.
I'm on the autism spectrum too, & I'm so tired of hearing "but you don't look autistic" or "you seem like a normal person to me". I get it's supposed to sound like a compliment, but rather much sounds like ignorance. Just because I'm an ADULT who hasn't got high functioning, doesn't mean I doesn't affect me everyday
Can't tell you how many times older men have told me to smile at work. My male coworkers are never told to smile. You're not giving me paychecks, I'm not gonna smile for you.
'Aw, thank you, Grandpa', or 'Aw, you're welcome, Grampy' That's what you say in return, with your best 'aren't old people adorable' voice and facial expression. And then call them that for a few weeks whenever you speak to them... it'll either sort them out or get HR involved.. win whichever outcome.
It's true, I remember going through the typing pool and saw a woman near a filing cabinet, the manager walked by smoking a cigar and smacked her ass. I mean, come on, it's 1956, men need to grow up.
hinata167 it depends on what job it is and how strict they are with the dress code. but it's very rare it can happen. plus some employers find flats unprofessional- again that is entirely on the job and dress code strictness.
That's a point that is ignored; it's up to the employer to define the strictness of the dress code. Usually it was made so people wore simple, usually business wear, for jobs so that you would focus on work. It's why uniforms work so well; everyone dresses the name, nothing to complain about. Khakis and polo shirts are two of the most common pieces of clothing in the U.S. workplace
hinata167 As Emma mentioned, its not exactly common but yeah it can happen. Just like any other dress code violation, if you've been warned about it (either once or twice depending on the employer), continuing to dress against the code is a legitimate fireable offense.
I had a man say to my boss (male), after he'd spoken to me and two other female colleagues, "you train your girls like rottweilers, you need to feed them more often" This was a business owner, talking to my boss... He wanted a discount for paying a bill he owed, in full, but long after it was overdue. Myself and my colleagues all said no, as did my boss. He got really stroppy after speaking to me. 😂
Gah, questions like that bring out all the snideness in me. "Calm down, dear." -- I am calm, moose. "Is it that time of the month?" -- (wide-eyed & innocent) What time? "Oh, you know." -- (still innocent) No. What do you mean? "Can you make us some teas, love?" -- *Can I*? Yes. Will I? No. "Can I speak to your manager?" -- You already are. "I see you've got the girls out" -- Well I can't exactly leave them at home, can I? "You're got a lovely pair" -- (holds up a foot and admires shoe) Thanks! I got them on sale..
An actual conversation with a male "friend" (not a work colleague) Him: oh that time of the month? Me: What time? Him (whispered): your period Me (loudly): oh! You're asking if I'm bleeding from my vagina? Yes, yes I am. (Big smile) Him: (goes red, awkwardly shuffles away)
I worked in a corporate office for 9 months because I needed the extra cash. Worst time in my life! All the rules and narrow minded people. You will not tell me how to dress and what nail polish to wear! Now I’m back to the creative side and I am never leaving it again! Xx #unicorn Update: it was red nail polish
"Not enough information." I've heard stories of men (of all ages) having no idea how periods work, and thinking they're optional or just an excuse for women to go to the bathroom more often. Also, if this is an office setting, i'm sure many of you can imagine what is said to women in the service industry, especially waitresses (and yes, it can get extremely bad).
This video makes me kinda sad, but it’s a positive thing that these women are so high up in their professions in-spite of all the ignorant comments they receive. I know there’re people here who think it’s all feminist bollocks, but we really aren’t asking for much; if you wouldn’t say it to a male college don’t say it to a woman. hopefully most sexist men- or women even- will see this as a lesson. Maybe if we have more successful women so it becomes the norm these issues will eventually die down.
People need to calm down. No one cares when these are about teachers, doctors, short people or tattoos but as soon as they do one about anything vaguely political like race or gender everyone loses their minds and shouts buzzfeed. They're probably going to do men later
They might do Muslim men or Black men, you know, something that will allow them to continue beating the dead horse of victimhood - but even then I wouldn't hold my breath.
Matt Mosley What would be in the video though? I've only been asked "Is it a religious thing?", "Oh, so you're waiting for "the one" right?", and "Then why do you take birth control?" And none of those are really bothersome; 1 & 2 can be answered 'yes' or 'no' and 3 with "for medical reasons". I guess what I'm asking is, what kind of questions do you get that you feel a whole video could be made?
This isn’t just at work. In school whenever I get annoyed a boy will go, “Is it that time of month?” That really makes me pissed. Apparently I can’t get annoyed without it being a sign of how emotional I am or some other complete bull crap. You are just being annoying, it’s not me being emotionally unstable. (An example is when a boy is humming a song over and over and won’t stop after I’ve asked him nicely a bunch of times, and I’ll get annoyed and then people assume I’m on my period.)
Lots of salty men here who can't stand a female-themed video. To those men, what "things not to say" have YOU heard PERSONALLY at WORK? Consider this comment your safe space and feel free to share experiences below. Note, not what people say about white males but what people have said to YOU about YOU. If you post a legitimate hurtful/sexist comment you've received about yourself you'll get a thumbs up and sympathies from me. If you regurgitate circlejerk complaints that haven't happened personally to YOU, you get a thumbs down.
I worked in retail and if I was kneeling to do a task old, white men would always come and say "say a prayer for me while you're down there". #1. you didn't say that to my male co-worker... #2. You might have missed it but I'm actually at work at the moment... #3. I'm an atheist... we don't pray.
I’m a 13 year old boy and me and my year were on a 3 day trip to an activity thing... place and one of the activities was a huge zip wire. My group leader was a really horrible/cruel female teacher. The waiting line we stood in was about 40 kids long and for absolutely no reason our group leader just brought all the girls to the front and pushed all the boys to the back. I asked her why she did it and she just completely blanked me. THAT is sexist.
Yes. Yes it is. Gender equality is when both girls and boys get the place in the line regardless of gender. She shouldn't bring boys to the front either. And may you carry this example with you your whole life young man.
One time I asked a girl that is my friend " is it that time of the month?" And let's say she beat me black and blue until I said I was a pink dinosaur. I have never asked that question since.
I fucking loved this. Just listening to all these intelligent and powerful women talking about this topic and responding in their own way is amazing wow
I was fired for reporting harassment from my former manager and when I showed them evidence of it they blamed my "attitude" and lack of "team player mentality".
I dont think the statement ' can I speak with your manager ' is necessarily aimed at women, I think it's just that people expect a manager to be in an office at the back or something and you, the worker talking to the customer, to go to the back and get them for the customer. I apologise if my wording was confusing...
Ok the last one and time of the month are completely inappropriate. Why would any guy say that. The bossy thing, id rather be called bossy than aggressive. Ties and suits are not comfortable btw. Men get can i speak to your manager too. I think there is some things here that has nothing to do with gender. I hate calm down. The most frustrating thing ever.
Feminism for the win! I have some things I need to get off my chest from watching this: 1) Periods in all spheres, everywhere, need to be un-taboo-ised. It's bs that you have to be secret about a natural bodily function, it's nothing to be ashamed of. This myth that you have to keep it hidden is perpetuated by tampon and pad companies, on their packaging they always boast how their products are discreet. Bitch please, there is no need for that. I hate the way we use so many euphemisms about menstruation: that time of the month, women problems etc. Call it what it is. 2) I agree, when a woman has a job, her title is always referred to with "woman" before it like: woman director, woman doctor. 3) I don't think you have to be bossy to be a good leader. Our idea of leadership is completely masculine-centric, you don't have to be domineering, commanding and warrior like, we need to deconstruct this idea and show that there are many ways to be a leader. 4) The first person in a white t-shirt oozes sexiness ♥
I don't they are working any more. They are living off the money they have won off the sexual harassment lawsuits they have filed against all these nasty companies that they worked for that only seem to employ men who are filthy, sexist perverts. I'd like to know where they worked so my girlfriend can get a job there and then maybe win some money for sexual harassment. We could be doing with a new car.
I hear snide comments as a female med student, I assume it's gonna get worse when I become employed. Admittedly, most of the sexism comes from the older generations and they are slowly leaving
As if anyone that isn't in the field of psychology or suffers from it themselves would even know what it is lol. Most people that have it don't even know they do. I only discovered it was a thing a little over a year ago, at age 29, and I've been pulling hair out since age 10 or 11. I just took for granted it's that annoying and embarrassing thing that only really me in particular would do, and never bothered looking into it.
I don't see the problem with the lipstick issue. Some colours are not suitable for work, depending on the workplace of course. Rocking up for a client facing corporate meeting in neon green lipstick is probably not the best. Just as it wouldn't be if a man wore a bright yellow suit to the same meeting, or if a white woman wore coffee brown foundation. Some things are just not advisable for particular situations
This one bugged me, too. Unless you've already led that person to believe you're the manager, why would they just assume you are? I would wager women and men get asked for a manager about the same amount.
The reason why they complain about that us because it's very common for people to always say "who's the man in charge." They almost never say it the other way.
There needs to be a “Things not to say to women in science” It’s interesting how a handful of these are actually the opposite for women in science. Like how we won’t be taken seriously if we wear makeup or dress up.
My mom has gotten asked in several occasions to pass someone on the telephone line to “the man in charge”

I don't fret over how other men's perceived masculinity of me. I have a lovely wife and kids who motivate me every day to be the best man I can be. I also don't whinge about men being absolutely non-existant from my supervisory structure. I do my work and am promised a promotion upon completion of discussed goals. I have no reason to believe they would deny me that promotion if I achieved stated goals. I also served 6 years in the U.S. Army which was dominated by men. I could not expect the same treatment BECAUSE THEY HAD INCENTIVE TO PROMOTE BASED ON GENDER AND RACE. Could we please strive to have a merit based system in place for ANY/ALL fields of work?
Women need to be 50% present everywhere. We need representation for people equal to how they make up the general population
Ah yes, all those female dominated departments in engineering.

"The problem with women, the mouth won't stop" - Fear,
PLEASE do "Things Not To Say to People With Invisible Illnesses/Disabilities"!
Little Tuna I hope your sister lives her life to the fullest and just lives her life better than the people who make fun of her do.
gacygirl 24 Thank you for that, reading that gave her the biggest smile :)

Holy shit I can't believe that women are treated like that in a workplace! It makes me sick!
It's true, I remember going through the typing pool and saw a woman near a filing cabinet, the manager walked by smoking a cigar and smacked her ass.

Can you really be fired for not wearing heels? Why not flats?
hinata167 it depends on what job it is and how strict they are with the dress code. but it's very rare it can happen. plus some employers find flats unprofessional- again that is entirely on the job and dress code strictness.
I imagine a catwalk model might get fired for refusing to wear them.
That's a point that is ignored; it's up to the employer to define the strictness of the dress code. Usually it was made so people wore simple, usually business wear, for jobs so that you would focus on work. It's why uniforms work so well; everyone dresses the name, nothing to complain about. Khakis and polo shirts are two of the most common pieces of clothing in the U.S. workplace
Normal heels/flats should be ok but some companies literally tell women to wear -high- heels
hinata167 As Emma mentioned, its not exactly common but yeah it can happen. Just like any other dress code violation, if you've been warned about it (either once or twice depending on the employer), continuing to dress against the code is a legitimate fireable offense.
I had a man say to my boss (male), after he'd spoken to me and two other female colleagues, "you train your girls like rottweilers, you need to feed them more often"
This was a business owner, talking to my boss... He wanted a discount for paying a bill he owed, in full, but long after it was overdue.

If, in a corporate setting, I ever get asked to make tea, I will bring them a cup of tea so weak and milky it will offend those asking.

I've heard stories of men (of all ages) having no idea how periods work, and thinking they're optional or just an excuse for women to go to the bathroom more often.
Also, if this is an office setting, i'm sure many of you can imagine what is said to women in the service industry, especially waitresses (and yes, it can get extremely bad).
I hate hearing things like that. Even when not directed at me. The fact that I have a vagina does not does not effect the fact that I can do the job.
How can you just straight up deny the experiences of women?
eilidh macleod the experiences of 8 people count for the experiences every woman will have at work...
Then you're lucky.

AwesomePerson Just start at them deadpan and say "How am I supposed to know if you've got your period? Maybe you ought to go check."

“You did that AND you have a vagina?!” PERFECTION 😂
Feminism for the win!
I have some things I need to get off my chest from watching this:
1) Periods in all spheres, everywhere, need to be un-taboo-ised.
*On behalf of all men, i apologise for the little boys pretending this doesn't exist*
Where the heck are these women working?? Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've never heard anything even close to these comments
I don't they are working any more. They are living off the money they have won off the sexual harassment lawsuits they have filed against all these nasty companies that they worked for that only seem to employ men who are filthy, sexist perverts.
"oh so you did that AND had a vagina!?" So amazed 😂 love that
My friend shouted out to the school that she had her period it was bloody hilarious
Wow these comments are dumb af
Agreed! I don't think you should make any comments about appearance in the workplace. It's not necessary and it's really rude
If someone doesn't work with you or have met the manager before, how can they know who the manager is?
Its a shit point. They want a reason to complain abput nothing.
Being bossy isnt a good trait either, not even in men.
I thought that I'm sure there are men who get the same questions
This one bugged me, too. Unless you've already led that person to believe you're the manager, why would they just assume you are? I would wager women and men get asked for a manager about the same amount.
The reason why they complain about that us because it's very common for people to always say "who's the man in charge." They almost never say it the other way.
