Gumshara in Chinatown is my favourite. The thickest broth I've ever tried and tender pork. My favourite in Sydney. I didn't like Ryo's because the pork was tough when I went. Yasaka and Manpuku in Chatswood would be my next favourites.
HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Hakata Gensuke at Melbourne on Russell St. It is very comparable to the world-famous Ichiran ramen, both in terms of experience and taste.
What’s the little black dots in the broth at Ichibandori ramen? 🤔 Looks delicious and yes definitely less thicker than the first one, would’ve chosen this over the thicker soup 👍🏻
Thanks for the reviews, you’re great and I love your channel. I’ve only discovered ramen this year. Can kick myself for not discovering it sooner, so good! Looking forward to taste testing them all around Sydney! I can’t believe the price of some of them though, it’s only $10 at my local, which was the first one I ever tried, and where I fell in love!
Congrats on 8k subscribers! I'd recommend checking out Hakata Maru Ramen (there's a branch in Chatswood and Darling Square), Rising Sun Workshop (Newtown) and Gogyo (Surry Hills).
Belated comment..just found your channel - fave ramen is ichiban boshi...but do agree on RaRa Ramen...went there in the middle of the Sydney winter and it was so worth it for a winter pick me up!
I personally love a good Tonkatsu Ramen 🍜 - My fav to be exact. Gumshara has a great one, but personally I prefer the Hakata style broth as it isn’t as dense and rich in flavour. I would recommend both Manpuku @ Kingsford and Ichi-ban Boshi on Oxford St Bondi Junction.
LOL YAY ramen video!!! Good thing you have your brother to help you eat... I know what it's like to eat 3 bowls of ramen in one day with no help... 😂😂😂
Nice review. Sydney has the best ramen restaurants! Janice you missed out a few. My personal favourite is the Black Ramen at Gogyo, Surry Hills. You have to try this. What about Ramen Zundo? :D. I just realised this was done last year! LOL. Maybe time for an update?
Agreed, a lot of people still prefer thick broth of ramen. Great review Janice 👍🏻 Is there any good tsukemen in Sydney? On rainy and cold days, we like to eat soup based ramen :) However in hot summer days, we like a tsukemen 👌🏻🤤
Great vlog. I agree, Gumshara broth is way too thick. I find that the thick broth generally tend to appeal more to the Chinese people (Yasaka included). Ichibandori is personally best for me, but unfortunately Tomo-san had to close. You should do a follow up vlog on Ippudo (Pitt St Westfield), Ramen Zundo, Sekka and possibly Kameya.
This is so awesome, omg I love ramen and this video is so great especially when I go to Sydney, I’m thinking of going at the end of the year even for a weekend. Thanks girl
Thing about Ramen is everyone have different preference... and dependent on your preference of soup base, different places are different. Ryo and Rara both decent, but I've also had many others in Sydney which are very good (especially not having them back to back and comparing)... Eg. Rising Sun Workshop, Manpuku in chatswood, Butter in Surry Hills, Ramen Ichiraku (think they're closed now)
I'm a Sydney gal. Giiiiirl love your passion for sharing what you enjoy doing in video. I love watching them! Defs going to check out these ramen restaurants soooo yum
I moved from Sydney already and I only tried yasaka and ippudo. Love the ramen there that's why I keep on coming back. Will definitely check the other ramens that you feature when I get back to Sydney.
I had the pleasure many years ago of eating at Ryo‘s when my daughter was studying in Australia. I have to say, it was the best Ramen I have ever eaten.
Should’ve gone to the original Ryo’s in Crows Nest! (My hood lol). My personal faves are Ramen Zundo (World Square) and Mapuku (Chatswood)! Thanks for another nice vid, Janice! You’re really doing a good job repping our beautiful city 💪
3:48 You walked past Noodle Star!!! Ok it’s not ramen, but it’s the best Chinese lunch place in neutral bay, I’m so lucky I work there, 2 of your ramen shops are in neutral bay, and you can walk to ryo ‘s in 10 mins.
This feels like a lot longer ago than it was with the pandemic (sigh). Funny, I didn't know about the Yasaka in Neutral Bay (have eaten at the Liverpool St shop @Town Hall); have not tried the other Ramen place in Neutral Bay. Have eaten at Ryo's and lined up but at Crows Nest, not Bondi Jctn. Have tried Rara. Have tried Gumshara. Agree with what you've said in general, yes, and the pork between Rara and Ryo's, Ryo's really does do it well. Re: Gumshara, some swear by it, others can't deal with the heaviest broth in Sydney. I've decided to eat it the way I consume an espresso - it it's thick, then I'll make sure I've got a bottle of water or something to help my kidneys live. They boil the bone marrow for hours, 2 lots a day, and when it's too dry they won't have it available anymore. Not a great atmosphere but who cares once you've got that bowl in front of you. Wind is an issue outside, I realise. On a blustery day even better for ramen. For me, Ryo's remains the best one. The good thing is there are many more to try. GoGyo in Surry Hills, Rising Sun in Newtown (if you can get there for breakfast!), Ippudo, etc.
for the yasaka u should've gone to the one in city, it taste a lot better than neutral bay and bondi junction, even the noodle looks and taste different, u can see someone is making ramen in front of window everyday, and also try charco bar and Gaku Robata Grill u wont regret
btw the way u like the noodle is exactly the way i like too, personal taste, and also cos noodle is soaking in the hot broth, if its hard enough to start with when u finish the last bite it wont get overcooked
Three to add would be Hakata Maru Ramen. New store in darling square and manpuku in Kingsford and wok and noodle in Kings Cross . Haven't been to gogyo yet.
@@JaniceFung I'm not a fan of gumshara either. Went once and won't be going back. Ichiban boshi looks good. I went to 10 Ramen joints when Japan Airlines was having a contest for free flight to Japan.
Was in Sydney last year wish I knew of these places. Gig and I also just went to a ramen festival in NYC and posted a vlog from it. Got to try 3 ramens but couldn't wait on the lines for all of them
@@JaniceFung Sadly, no ramen. I had eaten dinner before watching your video. Moreover, we're having an indian summer here in Northern California. About 90F/32C during the day, not exactly ramen weather just yet.
Looks like you have a lot of high quality ramen joints in Sydney. Good thing you had your bro to help you on this episode cause that is a lot of food hahahaha. Good on you for splitting things up over a couple of days cause we did 4 ramens in 5 hours and that was tough hahahahaha. Tonkotsu and Soy is always good but ya know that Rara Tonkotsu looked the best especially since the noodles have a lotta chew & the massive bbq pork:)
gumshara is a second home to me i never know how the foodcourt can feel so warm when im in there beautiful food and the staff are so nice while being fast and funny
Ramen!!🍜🍜 since when did ramen get so expensive. Here in NYC too. I still think u can get good ramen for 900 yen. About $9 in tokyo. That pork in your 1st bowl look amazing!!
Hi Janice! So nice to see your video's! It's very funny because I stay at Redfern Iglu these months, next to RaRa Ramen! I love the place so much and it's literally less than a minute away from my room. Wish you the best! X Linde (from Singapore Cube hostel)
Omg hey Linde! I hope you’re enjoying Sydney and your exchange ☺️ I’m jealous you’re so close to RaRa Ramen actually haha How much longer are you in Sydney before you leave ?
Good tip of recording your commentary outside. The chewier the noodles, the better! Agree there. That's a lot of pork bone... We'll take it. Haha Great tour!
I knew it!!!!! Yasaka!!!! One of the best I've tried in SYD, Manpuku in Kingsford used to be the best on my list but not anymore since like 2 years ago
The ramen places you went too looks super yummy. Will definitely have a visit to those place and try it out. Just wondering what do you think of the ramen place in Kingsford/Chatswood called Manpuku? and Ippudo at Central Park? Menya on Sussex? Hope you can make another second part of the video..hehehe~~ ^^ Lastly Keep up the great videos :) love the videos your doing.
I’ve never really been a fan of ramen but still give it a try every now and then. But I’ve tried so many ramen places this year and personally for me, gumshara has too strong of a pork flavour and too salty for me but I like their noodles 😁. Yasaka on Liverpool st has become my fav go to place as it’s much more clean tasting than gumshara. Rara ramen has been on my list for a while now so I think it’s definitely time to visit hehe 😍
Janice Fung Janice Fung i didn’t know there was one in Neutral Bay :) But the one on Liverpool St has an open kitchen if you’re lucky enough to sit at the bar stools. Usually only for 2 people. Bigger groups will be seated on normal tables 🤗 So do check them out 😋 Yas! I’m glad to hear it’s worth the visit ☺️
I really enjoy your videos! Just as feedback, you said a few times "Tonkatsu" ramen, when it should be Tonkotsu. Tonkatsu is actally a completly different Japanese dish. Also for Ryo Noodles,. Its a bit hard to pronounce the Japanese, but rather than Ri-Yo, its more a roll of the tounge when saying r-yo. Sorry to be that guy >< but keep up the good work, and I look forward in trying these places when I move back to Sydney from Japan ^^

I highly recommend everyone to try Manpuku in Chatswood! The options for ramen are all so so good! Classic and authentic 👌🏻
Ahh awesome rec, thanks Aimee!
I can double the suggestion for Manpuku!
Gumshara in Chinatown is my favourite. The thickest broth I've ever tried and tender pork. My favourite in Sydney. I didn't like Ryo's because the pork was tough when I went. Yasaka and Manpuku in Chatswood would be my next favourites.
Haha yeah The broth is crazyyy thick at gumshara.
Janice Fung Theres a new one called Sekka in St Leonard’s pretty good too!
HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Hakata Gensuke at Melbourne on Russell St. It is very comparable to the world-famous Ichiran ramen, both in terms of experience and taste.
Noted, thanks!
Janice's favourite 2 phrases in every video:
"Without further ado....."
"Having said that....."
🤣🤣🤣
Hahahahahahaha 😳
It’s like my go-to transition sentence😶
Your forgot “it’s good.... really good!”
"It's so good!"

Chaco Bar has my favourite ramen I think. The coriander sizchuan ramen is amazing. Also at RaRa, they do Mazemen which is a dry ramen. It's SOO tasty
I see that (dry ramen) on the menu all the time but never actually gave it a go - I’ll have to next time I go to rara

Gumshara is the go to place, especially in winter for the thick broth ramen, Menya also in Chinatown is also good.
Chaco Bar at Darlinghurst. They do ramen at Mon, Sat, Sun for the whole day and lunchtime on other days. The Yuzu Scallop is brilliant!
I personally love a good Tonkatsu Ramen 🍜 - My fav to be exact.

menya noodle on market street is the best ramen ive had in Sydney.

love rainy days... and the best is to have a nice soup and a hot chocolate while looking out through a window :)
Oh I love that! Hot drink and all warm and cosied while outside is pouring is the best

A hearthy bowl of ramen, chewy noodles, rich broth, soft spice of fatty pork that melts in your mouth, girl, I'm salivating hahaha!!
Guys it really was soooooo good! Even more perfect in cold weather haha
You can judge a good ramen by the soft egg too. I see a very nice one at that second place. Did you add sesame seeds to that 3rd bowl?
Nope the sesame came with it!
Three to add would be Hakata Maru Ramen. New store in darling square and manpuku in Kingsford and wok and noodle in Kings Cross
