Mad Max movie without Max is like making a Vietnam War movie that's set in on Antarctic research station involving a plotline of studying penguin mating habits.
That still sounds more interesting than 90% of hollywood movies nowadays
You can have a Mad Max movie without Mad Max, but for his absence to be forgiven, it has to be a really, really good movie.
@@jiminvernessor a new concept to avoid being a generic spin-off.
That is a false equivalent

1. No Mad Max.
2. No one trusts Hollywood (nor should they)
3. People tired of “girl-boss” characters.
4. The actress is terribly miscast.
5. F the higher-than-though Hollywood a-holes that hate us but want our money.
I see a girl boss lead character on the artwork of a new movie and its a hard pass.
You people 😂
I’m surprised more people aren’t saying she’s miscast. Anya is great but it’s tough for me to see her carrying an action movie.
People are also broke
4 is a big one for me.
I was reminded of Terminator Genisys where the actress they got to play Linda Hamilton's role was smaller than her and looked like Terminator 1 Linda Hamilton could knock her out.
I just don't see Furiosa in this actress.
For starters, this movie should've come out no more than 3 years after Fury Road, when interest was a lot higher, and public fatigue with the perceived subversive female protagonist didn't cause a massive chunk of potential audience to just dismiss it outright. Regardless of timing, it also never should've had "Mad Max" in the title, and being a spinoff, shouldn't have a ridiculous budget.
At this point in time, it doesn't matter to anyone if the movie is actually decent or even good depending on who you ask, or that it's less woke/feminist than Fury Road; the marketing doesn't reflect that. Personal opinion: basically every entertainment company needs to fire their marketing and PR teams, or at least purge them of activists.
Furiosa needs to make 500 mill for it to be a success, atm it's sitting at 71 mill box office. Only the budget of the film was 160-200 million dollars, then you have advertisements, cinema fees on 50% and so on to think about.
Closer to 500 million even.
With something like 170 million budget you'll have another 80 million for marketing. That's 250 million.
Since roughly 50% is for the cinema, you need 500 million at the box office to break even.
@@wedgeantilles8575 Yeah they got a long way until they break even without losing money. This movie will not generate any money.
The estimates I heard are $440-480 million.
@@seefoghall yeah cinemas take a 50% cut so probably closer to 500 mill.
I watched literally 10 mins of this garbage on a streaming channel and I'm glad I never paid a fkn dime for this satanic cringe fest. Fkn weirdo movie.
The femininity of Alita Battle Angel is very much part of the original work.
And the movie honored that, that’s why it was good. A part 2 would destroy that legacy.
I'm happy, because I'm not the only person who thought she looked like Gally, the protagonist of "ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL".
Replacing Sharon Stone is a difficult task, kkkk
Nobody minded Tina as Girlboss in Thunderdome. So do not accuse us of bigotry, please, critics. We just want something that is Max.
And this is because Auntie was a really good and written character whom Tina during the set even improvised some of her dialogue, and argue with George about it, Even her last line in Thunderdome was something she spoke when the scene was supposed to be quiet, and became eternal.
"Goodbye, Soldier."
People loves to criticize Thunderdome a lot, but it is literally the journey's end for Max as a Good Ending and farewell for him.
@@knightofthenine3121 I guess the theme song says it all. We Don't Need Another Hero...
@@knightofthenine3121 Plus, Tina is a legit badass.
I think writers should learn the difference between a "girlboss" and a "strong woman".
Tina, Charlize, or Weaver's Ripley in Alien are strong women, because they earned their leadership as much by their acting, than the struggles the script put in their way. We as spectator can rely with their hardships and thus, it makes us respect them as characters.
A "girlboss" status is undeserved, because it feels either forced or unreal within the story rules or reality.
It's very hard to respect or even be interested in a character with rewards seemingly disproportionate to their struggles, and with us as viewers forced to see them as really strong, because the movie said so.
Rey as a Mary Sue is an extreme exemple of a girlboss, but Taylor Joy's Furiosa flirts with some similar pitfalls.
For example, there's no way a diaphanous 80 pounds girly could kick the kind of ass she does without superpowers. Sure, action heroes and heroines are always various levels of superhuman, but when you overplay it, it feels more like plot invulnerability, than an actioner's rule of cool with a hint of plot armor.
@@jeannaimarre3537 In Furiosa, she gets her ass kicked through the entire movie. She spends the first half as a kid in the cage and she has a whopping 15 lines of dialogue. Furiosa doesn't have the race swapping crap, the gay agenda, etc... It's just a great action film.
A movie nobody asked for boing released at a time scrutiny over messaging on entertainment is at an all-time high, and they make a trailer that makes the movie look like a feminist power fantasy. What could possibly go wrong?!?
nobody asked for any of the Mad Max films. and yet we had a visionary director that made them anyway. nobody asked James Cameron for Terminator, or Ridley Scott for Bladerunner...
@@Lobosthecrow Bladerunner bombed in theaters when it released...
@@Lobosthecrow and what about Jack's other points - you are just going to ignore those, huh.
Fury Road was already a feminist power fantasy so i wonder why anyone would think otherwise
30 years ago I never cared if the lead was male or female, black, white or asian. Or a green alien, ALF whatever.
All could be good movies or bad movies and shows, it didn't matter, it was never about race or gender.
Today I won't even take a second look at anything that has a diverse cast.
Because I know EVERYTHING is only about race and gender.
So the last new series I watched was "Reacher" - because the lead was a white male.
Today, I would miss out on Ripley, Blade, Janeway... - however, we all know that today none of them would be the great characters they were 30 years ago.
All of these movies and show would suck today.
It is like Christian or movies dedicated to any other religion. The plot must adhere to the tenants of the belief system and the moral of the story must promote them. So the art becomes predictable and loses all nuance. Concerning the wokeism, the cult of DIE, its disciples seem to treat the audience as children that must be educated. This is insulting and makes the films unpleasant to watch.
Janeway herself is a feminist transition character where she's schizo about helping other civilizations. Sometimes she's strict about upholding the Prime directive and other times, she'll help the Borg survive.
@@dragonknightleader1 I liked the first few seasons of Voyager, but I lost interest when the Borg appeared - because of the reason you already stated.
But the first seasons I enjoyed.
@@dragonknightleader1 Remember that time she got infatuated with a holographic man and kept henpecking his programming to make her perfect man? That was weird.
ALF in a Mad Max movie? Yes please. He would fit right in.
People are tired of all of Politics of it, and all it will take is a bad day to make them go mad worldwide Shad.
Also, people wants a MAD MAX movie with Mel Gibson back as Max, not Tom Hardy larping as him since the Feral Kid theory is more real.
Mel Gibson is now 68, while the character would probably have died or retired years before reaching that age.
I don't want him back in Mad Max, he's a better director and producer than he is an actor now. He's too old now as well. You just expect and want too much out of the series, I also didn't notice any political bs in it. So just continue to cry over it I guess..
@Foxhound94 We want Mel. Only tears are from incels watching it bomb.
I honestly couldn't care less about what you people want. Make your own fucking movie if it bothers you that much..
It's really simple.
Less money and no good will left.
The other problem that movies are fighting is that, regardless of how good a movie is or not, I and many others do not have the money to go to every other movie. That have been a few movies that have come out that I was interested in seeing, but I ultimately decided not to go because I could not afford it. But stay on watch!
I've watched 4 movies in theater this year (all matinee, so soda/popcorn was actually more that the movie ticket) Two were fantastic, and I'd save up to pay to see them in the theater again. The other two were ok, maybe I'll watch again on streaming...or not. For one, (Godzilla Minus One Minus Color) I was the only person in theater!
Several reasons one of which happens to deal with actors have pushed fans away with politics and everyone is tired of the same plot lines in films now. Why would I see a Mad Max film without Max in the movie? Lol
what's the plot of the film?
@@Lobosthecrow I remember the plot of Fury Road - There and Back Again.
They drove in a straight line, then they drove back in a straight line and took over the water fortress, since everyone was too busy driving in a straight line to defend it.
I'd give an estimate of everyone's mental abilities, but my comment would be deleted after.
And this one has even less Mad Max than the last.
We need Ozriosa
How about Mad Shad? Building fortifications from junkyard's junks
Mad Max without Max is like Halloween 3 without Mike Myers.
It's like Alien without Ripley, oh wait...
Alita Battle Angle was also a robot underneath. The suspesion of disbelief is much easier if the person is animated and not a real flesh and bone actress that struggles to push the visibly compliant and accomodating stuntmen around. I have no problem believing that with Mel Gibson but a skinny Furiosa?
Also they always cast an actress that is the statue of someone like Theron instead someone like Gina Carano who is an ex-MMA fighter. At least cast someone who has the forearms my god.
It's EXACTLY like that
Our economy is in the trash... who can afford to see a mad max film with no mad max?
Another thing is that Fury Road was like NINE YEARS AGO. Normally if you wanted to make a sequel, you'd strike when the iron is hot. Even if you liked FR or Furiosa herself at some point, that shit was so long ago that, that iron is not even cold, it's antarctic at this point.
This is an example that no matter how good your actions, special effects, scenography and photography are, people will not be interested in a manly lead female that replaces the male lead of the story because feminism of the director.
Liked Tom Holland as Spiderman and the Villains across his movies (hate all the supporting characters in films). Have no interest sitting in on another sour faced female protagonist in a modern action movie (hate Furiosa). Also loved the Alita Battle Angel movie too Shad. Such a feminine/adorable lead character.
To be fair the last Mad Max also did poorly unfortunately and the big gap between them also doesn't help.
In positive movie news, Godzilla Minus One is now on streaming services outside of Japan. Go watch that instead of Furiosa. You'll get a lot more out of it
"She's green as well."
Can't argue with that! xD
I just saw the girl boss protagonist and instantly forgot that the movie existed.
The last movie was a bait and switch. Why would I go back for that?
Fury road was sick though where's the bait and switch
Is that a ksp rocket in your pfp?
What turned me off from even seeing the film was that Anna Taylor Joy's doe-eyes make her so physiologically different that it's impossible for me to see her as the younger version of Charlize Theron's Furiousa. I think ATJ is a good actress in the roles she's suited for but this was not one of them. They should have found a lesser know actress.
10:30 self serving revenge movies can be good like the first John wick. But rarely
No, i wouldnt say rarely. I dont have any issues with the premise. I like it. As long as the movie is well made, im on board. I find the whole "rEveNge BaD" thing cringe.

You do understand there is a difference between an opinion about an extended universe and not knowing how an extended univrse works, right?
The MCU is a great example. Here is an extended universe that dominated the box office for a decade until Disney Marvel decided to prioritize identity based storytelling rather than the more universal (and profitable) heroe's journey.
I am very happy to see Oz back on Knights Watch!!!
I have a theory. I think it's a female lead fatigue.
This is me. I have female lead fatigue. I don’t even watch movies or tv shows with female leads, and that cuts out like 70% of stuff I find on streaming because almost everything is female lead.
@@linus116 I found the main character of Amazon's "Silo" series, played by Rebecca Ferguson (the one who played Paul's mother in Dune), to actually be one instance of very good "strong" (understand "manly") female character. She definitely is not feminine in the common sense, she has many "manly" qualities, like she is a no bullshit straight to point character, she is a pragmatist but she is not a girl-boss, she actively refuses to lead she is a loner to the core. And yet it never felt forced, like it never feels like a lesson that must be taught to the audience (which is the main reason "girl-boss" characters are super annoying), she does plenty of unambiguous mistakes, etc. And her character is clearly flawed too. Many of those mistakes come from the fact she is out of touch with her own feelings (which is very coherent with the rest of her character), and it leads her both to difficulties trusting others and bond with them, and to very impulsive decisions that more often than not bite her ass one way of the other.
I try to preserve myself from shitty "girl-boss included" stories so I think I escaped the worst cases in recent shows, but I had the misfortune of watching (half of) Three Body Problem series, me being a fan of the books. Of course it's a Netflix show, but I still hoped lol... No, that Salazar (her surname) character is a big offender xD, she's like in the prettiest, most feminine outfits + makeup of all the characters in the show but she is also the bossy, super-intelligent entrepreneur. She (of course...) makes snarky comments about patriarchy or whatever in first episode, and then proceeds for the rest of the show to have temper tantrums and be super annoying in the most self-righteous way possible. Rest of characters are shit too, but mostly because the extremely bland writing.
When I compare the two shows, it really looks to me like Silo is one of the gems of our dark time period. Yes the cast is all-inclusive if you count number of females and colored persons, etc. but it is not forced at all, never a point of discussion, AND it does not matter because writing is good. All these characters have clear personalities and goals, they don't just exist in a vacuum, they are not just pretty puppets made to do stuff that advances the plot, and attract x y z audience because of good looks, race or whatever.
Modern feminism seems to want men to hate women so they can complain the rampant problem. Feminist writers like to portray women as unlikeable because that's what they think being strong is. And, of course, they like to demonize men. If men are getting tired of women, it's because of modern feminism.
That's exactly it. I have no desire to see a female lead movie, even if Mauler is praising it.
Not so sure that is accurate, I think it's bad writing fatigue.
Redundant response but the main one for me, is no Bloody Max in a Mad Max film. Hollywood don't piss on my leg and call it rain.

No, the beancounters are starting to notice the bottom line, but they’re still too afraid to report to their bosses, who are either in far too deep with the woke crowd, or are getting far too much financing from them. But the money, w0k3 or not, is drying up, so they’ll have to come back to the traditional watering holes sooner or later.
I really think that a proper " Mad Max " spin off could be brilliant because we could get origins or other character stories. Max is not the only one in these stories. It's crazy how a cartoon from nearly two decades ago did strong female characters correctly.
Sokka: "I'm sorry. I treated you like a girl, when I should've treated you like a warrior."
Suki: "I am a warrior. But I'm a girl too."
If writers for a Nickelodeon cartoon can write strong female characters well, Hollywood writers should be able to too.
They can't anymore, they wrote Korra.
Agree with your points, but also the primary target audience for a movie like this is men, and as you said a lot of us are tired of the whole girl boss thing, so if women already aren't particularly interested in a movie like this and a huge portion of the target audience isn't either, then it will do badly. So agree, I think all the many movies and series in the last few years which have butchered cool and strong female leads, are definitely playing a huge part in why films like these are struggling.
Two major points I’m surprised didn’t get brought up: 1) this is a prequel, and prequels almost always struggle, because audiences already know where the character(s) end up, if they’ve seen the first movie. 2) it’s a prequel to a movie from 2015, that’s NINE years ago. Barack Obama was still president of the US when Fury Road came out, that’s how much time has passed. If this had come out in 2017-18, it might have been a hit. Nine years for a prequel is destined to fail, sadly. Even for a pretty decent film.

No matter the reasons action movies are mostly failing, the solution is to lower budgets. Just removing "the message" isn't going to be enough at this point. Hollywood is going to make less money at the theatres, so they need to plan accordingly.
Damn i missed having Oz on the show. Everyone is generally truthful about their opinions, but only Oz is willing to say out loud what everyone is thinking.
I think Barbie actually had massive negative impacts on the general perception of cinema. They sold us on a fun movie and they shoved divisive politics down our throats. This has resulted in complete and utter apathy and skepticism of basically every new movie. Add on top of this the utterly flacid and sterile depiction of hyper masculine women and it's over. I'm tired of watching mediocre movies made by marketing people who dig up the graves of better movies and filmed by people who have no passion for storytelling or craftmanship. I've gotten to the point that when one of these prequel or sequel movies come out I just say "I have one of those at home" and then I watch the good version, you know, the one I like.
I'm 100% sure that this movie was written by an AI! It's a conglomerate of short stories trying to form a movie.
While I don't disagree with many of the points made here, from my perspective the main reason for the flop (or why I'm personally not very invested in seeing the movie) is that it's just an uninteresting concept. It's about a character who we already knew everything necessary about, her story is over, and she just wasn't that extremely complex either to begin with. And on top of that this prequel is coming out almost ten years after the first movie that I found was quite creative and not bad, but still, not everything has to be pushed to become a franchise.

@25:40 yes, get the movie from streaming service for no extra - but on top of that, crazy theatre and confectionery stand prices (often more per person than your entire household streaming service for the month)
I think that another reason box offices are losing money is because the studios rush the movies to streaming after like 2-3 months now...there is no reason to spend all that money at the cinema when you can watch it in your home if you are patient.
Not so long ago, after a movie had been released you had to wait a minimum of 6 months before anything was released. Further back again, it was a year.
Time to bring Mel Gibson back as Max at the end of his life. Mel Gibson is so tired of woke Hollywood that the movie would have to be well written to even have a chance of getting him involved.

When Fury Road had great cinematography and action but a nonsensical story, Furiosa had mediocre action and an ok story. But that's the issue, I'm pretty sure nobody is watching Mad Max movies for the story. The best story in the Mad Max universe was in the video game, with the Road Warrior maybe coming in second. For a character movie, Furiosa had 0 character development. She starts out as a badass smart fighter girl and ends up as a badass smart fighter girl. That's the movie. There's only one way to make a Mad Max movie and that's to keep the CGI to a bare minimum and use proper cinematography with tracking-shots, built props and sets. Film on location. If should be a stunt-persons payday.
The sad part is the movie was actually really good, and now we probably won’t get mad max wasteland which I was so incredibly excited for:(
We are done with selfish "girl bosses."
You obviously didn't watch it. Rey, Rings of Powah, Captain Marvel, etc... are Girl Bosses. Everything comes easy to them and they easily win with no training at all. All of the men are stupid and the girl bosses don't need no man.
Furiosa is the opposite of that. She gets her ass kicked by everyone and only has 16 lines of dialogue in the movie. This movie is like The Road Warrior, with Praetarian Jack driving the War Rig and Furiosa is the feral kid with the boomerang. No gay crap, no race swapping... just badass action.
People want to make up excuses why they arent spending money on a movie, but what it comes down to is people just dont have the money. If we werent getting nickled and dime from every orifice we would still go see it even if there werent elements we didnt like. just to get out. Most people cant afford food right now, what are the chances of having spending money for a movie we may not like.
I never watched mad max before, so I think my reason for not going is a bit different. I felt like 'what is mad max if it doesn't have mad max' and so I kinda felt like why the new character? and of-course its a woman. So I think standalone this isn't an issue but with the growing movie sentiment in the last half decade of women being forced into lead roles where they shouldn't be, this movie falls victim to that feeling lots of movie-goers have experienced recently, even if it isn't bad. Furiosa was probably a good movie, but I've grown a bit sick of always having female leads on almost every movie I can think of. Its like we can't just have a good strong male lead anymore without criticism.
