I remember watching these ceremonies and immediately fell in love with this beautiful masterpiece. I'd heard of Joni Mitchell but since then she has become one of my favorite artists
I held my newborn son in the hospital while watching this performance live. This song and performance was 'ours' from that day forward. Every year on his birthday we watch it.
This is Joni’s newest arrangement of the iconic song, later included in the CD Snakes and Ladders. This was beyond beautiful and mesmerizing and living in Santa Fe, NM USA but Vancouver being where I grew up not moving to the US until age 25, I felt such profound emotions watching this and how It left me yearning to return home again.
Joni was born in the town of Fort MacLeod (pronounced McCloud) Alberta, grew up as a child and teen in several towns in Saskatchewan including the small city of Saskatoon, and she has owned a vacation home on the seashore north of Vancouver since 1970, she was photographed on its property for the cover of her 1972 album "For The Roses". The producers and directors of this Opening Ceremony wanted Joni to sing the song in person, but she was unable to attend due to medical issues.
I watched this with my mum when she was dying in the hospital She was from the prairies of Saskatchewan... this song will always remind me of her.
What a beautiful moment for you both to share at such a profound time. Thank you for sharing this.
This version of the song is the ultimate. So moving.

No matter how many times I see this, I cry like a baby. The boy creates the illusion of flight, so convincingly, that he really does take flight.

I thought I was the only one who always cries when I see this. I was crying when this came on during the opening ceremonies.
It still gives me chill. I will never forget seeing this in real time
, I weep.

Haunting, introspective, melancholic, beautiful, free, simple, loving... so many feelings from this performance.

Gotta hand it to the NBC sportscasters for not doing commentary over most of this segment and just letting the majesty of it play out.
Still makes me tear up a little. Great show Vancouver!
I love this version.
I was at the Opening Ceremonies in 2010. I thought to myself, "GOD! I haven't heard that song in FOREVER!"
I was there too! Remains one of my favorite experiences in life. And I loved, loved, loved this performance. Truly transportive!
JONI forever!
Beijing 2008 Olympics had something similar to this.
The acrobat was a last minute replacement
❤
I think she recorded this in 2010. it's not the 2000 version.
