It's important to note that a proper knot will hold much more tension than a simple twist

How come the loop around the post did not seem all that tight?
Is there a way to have that loop extremely tight around the post and then use the termination knot?

Tie one end, go to other end tension good and tight with a wire tensioner of your choice and pull slack wire tight and tie off release tool and good.
