    My music professor said that legend has it that another organist challenged Bach to see who was better. Apparently the guy heard Bach warming up, and left town that night so that Bach wouldn't completely embarrass him in front of the entire town.

      helter1234 Yes , It realy happened it was the French Organist and Composer Louis Marchand in Dresden/Saxony whowas invited to an organ competition by the King of Saxony 1717, as he was listening to the art of organ playing by J.S.Bach he left Dresden in a hurry during the night.

    • @DAOFB
      @DAOFB 9 років тому +378

      helter1234 It´s even better! He didn´t hear him play. It´s told he just heard him tune his harpsichord!
      And there´s even an explanation: Bach used the "Wohltemperierte Stimmung" (well temperament) which allowed him to play in any key he wanted, without making adjustments on the instrument. That must have been so groundbreaking to Marchand, that he simply resigned before even competing with Bach.
      But to save Marchands honour: He was and is an amazing french baroque composer who wrote wonderful pieces himself in the tradition of the old style.You can´t compare him to the "modern" stuff Bach offered his audience.

      and contrary to others Bach believed you must have the whole music in your head before writing it down while most and today maybe all musicians sit for example on a piano and create along the way by playing and listening and experimenting. Bach didn't allow his sons to do that :D this really blows my mind...to create all this in your head....some of his stuff is 30min+

      xD .. do you make your statement out of your own experience? I mean do you play organ yourself?
      this question is not intended to be provocative if you guess so. The reason is instead, that i startet playing organ about 3 yrs ago. After i first listened to Bachs Passacaglia and especially the monumental final of the Fugue, i said to my sister: "when i will be able to play this Passacaglia one day, i would die happily." Spoken, i bought myself a midi-basspedal and an e-piano (both together for about 1k euro). Then i started practising very hard (when i had the time, because i actually was studying chemical engineering, which was allready pretty time consuming) and to my own surprise i could play the Passacaglia and the last 1 1/2 pages of the Fugue after 8 months or so, but i never thought, that it would be one of the hardest pieces written by the master Bach.
      Maybe i have to add, that i played allready piano back then when i was younger for about 7 years and unfortunately made break of about 10 years.
      I would appreciate it, if you would take your time to listen to my test-recording of the Passacaglia, which i uploaded on my channel (better the piano version and not the organ version, in the organ version i did plenty of mistakes :S). Even though i was enthousiastic after learning the Passacaglia i didnt start to learn the entire Fugue yet (because i prefer to play more piano literature) but soon i want to be capable of playing the whole BWV 582. I hope i will make it through it soon ^^

    the crazy part of this piece is that he is playing on and original organ. usually the ones we have today, the keys are of equal weight. If you notice that he has three rows of keys. some of them are connected to the middle keyboard, which he is playing out of. The knobs to the side are telling the pipes how much air is going through them. so some of the keys would be harder to push down. the top and the bottom keyboards represent higher and lower notes. So when he plays on the center keys, other pipes open up to give a fuller sound. thus you would have to push down harder on that key. crazy!

    • @LS-oh8kv
      @LS-oh8kv 6 років тому +13

      It's called a mechanical action organ. The keys within a keyboard (proper term is a manual) are all the same, and the middle couples to other keyboards by pulling a coupler lever. If you couple both manuals to the great (middle keyboard) the actuation force is roughly 3-4 pounds per key, but it's the same for all of the keys on the keyboard. The bottom keyboard is called the ruckpositive and the top is called the swell. The great is always the most powerful, usually followed by the swell and then the ruckpositive. No matter what you do with the stops and couplers, all the keys on a single keyboard will be the same weight as the rest, the only difference would be when one hand is on one manual and another is on a different manual. This organ reminds me of a Brombaugh organ which I play quite often, very nice instruments.

      I heard someone play this in public and I immediately thought hey were playing Red Baron. But it was a little off, so I decided to look it up and discovered that the intro was heavily inspired by this composition! @@rubiksmaster301 heute vor 2 Jahren (03.09.2017) ich kriege die Nachricht von Peter (Name geändert) "Jürgen (Name geändert) muss um 17 Uhr gehen deswegen um halb" so was gab's noch nie und sollte in der Form auch nicht wieder vorkommen. Dann trifft man auf irgendwelche arschgefickten Hurensöhne, die einen ähnlichen (oder noch besseren) Prozess/Situation als am 09.04.2017 verhindern ...
      Mögen sie auf ewig verflucht sein und in der Hölle schmoren. Denen sollen als Vorspiel die Augen verbunden und die Schuhe ausgezogen werden, um sie in einen dunklen Raum oder Zimmer (Ich berichtete: ua-cam.com/video/ZTNej2USaYk/v-deo.html ) voller Legosteine zu schicken.
      So viel dazu. Am 06. April 2018 sollte alles nachgeholt werden. Aber jedes Ereignis ist einzigartig und umso bedauerlicher ist es dass solche Arschgeigen da einschreiten.
      Naja damals war man noch zufrieden mit allem und dankbar für alles was man an Js kriegt.
      Daher als Markierung des Ereignisses diese Musik (Ich verzichte an dieser Stelle bewusst auf direkte Parallelen zu Bn, Ln und co!). Ich war damals in so einer Piano tiles Phase. Und als Ohrwurm hatte ich keinen blöden Schlager, sondern diese Fuge Nr. 16 von J. S. Bach in G-Moll. Das Repertoire von Afric Simone schien ausgeschöpft gewesen zu sein ("Shaka" sollte mich ca ein Jahr später eines besseren belehren, ua-cam.com/video/pxvZaKj9zAM/v-deo.html Ich schweife schon wieder ab...).
      Ich schreie anstatt zu reden und körnigen Frischkäse kann man auch aus Quark und Mais herstellen. Da spart man Geld. Mal eben das 2000. Bild auf der SD Karte schießen. "Nickel(II)Chlorid-Hexahydrat-Unterhose". Schönes Grün. Übrigens am 03.09.2017 fand die allererste "Geschichte"-Fahrt statt. Ich eschauffier mich allerdings auch leicht über Peter (Name geändert). Es hatte 2 Tage nicht geregnet und da soll es nass sein???!
      Gut. Der Whatsapp Nachrichten- Austausch war eine kleine wieder gut machung für den 04. Juni 2017. Was fällt mir noch ein...? Ach ja spontan wurde eine fast schon neue Kategorie eingeführt und zwar BC. Kurioserweise ging es fast in Richtung A. Ja, Eckenschießen ist schon irgendwie seltsam (Danke, ihr Hurensöhne). Und das r ging gegen 17 Uhr, wenn ich mich net täusche, Richtung b.

    One of my favorites of Bach next to of course Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565).
    Feels so modern even though its over 300 years old.
