Service faults are rarely enforced properly, which enable players with bad illegal service form to continue their bad form, which hurts them much in the long run when playing a match with a service judge who strictly follow the rules. It's happened before, with much controversy, usually doubles and mix, that they were accustomed with lax enforcement... It's especially come after the 2018 BWF rule change with the universal 1.15 metres max height serve for all players.
Especially during the awarding ceremony, both the winners for Men's Double are from Indonesia, it was all Indonesian finals for MD, the so-called minions and the rising fajar/rian, but during the awarding ceremony, when they were about to step up tot he podium, the announcer called them from Malaysia respectively a.k.a. twice, Really what happened with DO 2022? 😂
Why can't the players challenge service judge's decision just like the linesman? This is totally unfair especially when Asians are playing in Europe. Obviously bias decision.
I think Zheng and Huang handled it like a champ. Despite the many service faults, they still carried on, and can still smile and shake the hands of the players and officials. I think a lot of it comes down to the point of contact with the shuttle, after that, even if the racket follows through above the line, it is irrelevant because the service action has already been completed. Whether or not the service judges look at this, I'm not sure. But there has to be consistency across all service judges, or else issues like this will repeat itself.
It simply because the new service rule (since 2018) are rarely enforced properly.... Which they are in this case..... the lax enforcement of the rule has enabled bad and illegal service forms.
@@leenpels7646 Nahhhh the rule is fine, its 115 cm.... its the tool that lacks of Consistency, it also affect by how short or tall the Service Judge is (because of Viewing angle/POV)
The weird part is Denmark players are much taller than Zheng Huang and their service motion are almost the same but they never been called once. And if u noticed carefully after Zheng provoked the service judge in the middle of the game , the service judge keep calling Zheng and not Huang anymore. This tell me the call very subjective.
I haven't watched the match but this Chinese pair is literally the best mixed doubles pair of last so many years they can do 2,3 or maybe 4 service fault but 10+? They aren't amateurs it's impossible to imagine this
I've tried to measure the height of some the serves by comparing the height of the point where there was a contact with the shuttle with the assumed height of both the chinese players (so the precision is debatable, I'm aware of that) from what I was able to find, those were quite close calls. I wonder what margin for error pro's leave - if they rather go for 110cm to be sure, or abuse the limit to the max as to the point where 114cm is considered too loose of a serve.
BWF should investigate period. The Danish coach is literally out of line. Totally disrespectful. You can always argue but never touch. Mind your manners. The service judge should be investigated separately. She clearly demonstrated lapse of judgement. Regardless of their ranking, given they are currently the best in the world, the number of service faults called is totally insane. Keep her out of officiating for the meantime while the investigation is going on. Bring the decency of badminton back please.
To be honest there should be VAR available for instant play back. Cameras and video software are so cheap these days there is almost no justification. With a bit of software you could do away with a serve judge altogether.
BWF is a disgrace compared to organization of other sports like Basketball, tennis, football...etc. That's why you keep getting these bad unqualified umpires.
Just love how Zheng and Huang for being so calm and patient despite all of this! Just hope European coaches and players learn atleast some of this and maintain dignity of the sport.
I cant be sure whether these fault is correct but I feel impossible for 3 times World Champion cannot adjust their serve after fault few time in a game. and I really respect the Chinese pair attitude in this game. they are the true champion. The worst is the Denmark coach. Nobody is questioning him or his players but he behave rude to the Chinese coach. Shame on that.
It's like muscle memory. It's hard to adjust what has been practiced thousands of times. In my own opinion, the service judge may have falsely faulted them.
Danish coach is a hero protecting umpire against abuse. China man is used to getting what he wants but luckily here in the West we protect the free people and no communism should abuse humans
Credit to the China Players. They took it so well and behaved professionally. Although amused. I never saw them had a disgruntled face. Or at least what I was allowed to see during the live stream. The danish Coach shoving the Chinese coach was uncalled for. That’s a shame.
i watched this match live/streaming and had questions about these calls as well. the danish pair are obviously fantastic athletes, and zheng/huang are one of the most dominating XD pairs we've seen in a long time. they are consistently extremely well-prepared and they play with extraordinary skill, precision, and professionalism. they are very hard to beat, and i love watching zheng's awesome speed, power, and precision and huang's extra-sensory read of the shuttle and acute tactical awareness as far as these service faults called against them, let's talk about facts not feelings. first, the rule. not the rule some people may have in their head, but the actual rule that is applied by the service judge. the rule does NOT provide that as long as you strike the shuttle below 1.15m you are ok. please understand that is not the rule. nor is the height you are holding the shuttle before you strike it relevant. you can hold the shuttle over your head before you strike it, and it can be legal, or you can hold it next to the floor and serve it illegally high. rule 9.1.6 states that the WHOLE shuttle must be BELOW 1.15m at the moment of CONTACT. the flare on the shuttle has a diameter of 6cm, so if you are holding the shuttle perfectly level, your striking point has to be below 1.12m (1.15m minus the radius of the shuttle). for my style of service, i need to aim for striking the shuttle around 1.10m to have a legal serve. also, players often move the shuttle forward and up just before contact, which is not illegal, but makes judging very difficult in some cases the service judge charged with enforcing this rule is staring through two clear panels with black lines and has to call a fault if at the moment of impact any portion of the shuttle is not BELOW the line she is looking at no one here was looking through what she was looking through, but a lot of people have opinions about what she should have seen based on various things in their head, like how consistently zheng/huang usually serve. the service judge isnt concerned with what zheng/huang usually do nor should she care that they might be the greatest mixed doubles pair of the decade. she's just looking at the shuttle and that black line. it's a humble job, and there's no reason to believe she wasnt trying to do it right there is a problem here though, which is that a lot of people, including myself, saw those serves are normal and yet they're getting faulted repeatedly with no opportunity for review. no-review is bad for everyone, including the service judge, who has no way to vindicate her calls. bad for everyone, because this was an unusual string of faults against one team, and no one has a good way of confirming these calls as correct or calling them into question. instead, a lot of people have opinions, which is bad, because opinions suck instead of blaming the service judge, it's much better to understand the problem and see the solution is not imagining things about her motives, but providing review for all service and net calls in every superseries match, which are as much a problem as service calls. and for that, you need high speed camera setups so these calls can be challenged and ruled on based on a visual review. if i have it right, that's one cam at the net and two cams looking at serves, plus a little rulemaking on how to handle service faults (line judge would have to call service fault at end of play instead stopping play with call of fault-- a little tricky but it can be worked out) if bwf would put more effort into these kinds of nuts& bolts instead of having fire shoot out of the ground when the athletes walk out-- like we're all 8 years old-- the sport would be improved with a higher level of confidence that results are based on performance and not on the way officials are handling the match
I think this response is by way one of the most unbiased response here. I think it all faults down to BWF not having any form of review mechanism which allow such minor abuse (if I may call it) to be possible. I fail to understand the need for a tournament referee when on most (or all) occasions, the tournament referee does absolutely nothing to vindicate the unjust calls. While we fall back to this match, it is absolutely shame to see how the system may be abused to its maximum. As a player, it will definitely affect the game knowing that even if I win a point, I would lose one back the next second when I serve. That certainly affects the confidence and play of the players. Next, it is an absolute shame on the Denmark coach. He by all person should be the last to be involved. The Chinese coach had merely aired his complain to the umpire verbally. There is no need for any physical contact. Despite this, as far as I know, nothing was done by BWF against the coach - not even a statement or verbal warning. What kind of image is BWF portraying? It is such a satisfaction to see how the Denmark players were beaten in the French Open with absolutely no blatant abuse of system there. Absolutely shame on Denmark players (except Axelsen) for needing to resort to such advantage.
@@legacy22822 agree with most of what you've said here, including bad behavior of the danish coach, which was totally unacceptable. but i dont agree with blaming any of the athletes. it serves no good purpose to imagine the danish players played less honorably than zheng& huang. blaming the danish players is not a lot different, mentally, than what the danish coach did, which was to imagine grievances and then blame someone for his own imagination. that's mental and it's always a choice to go with the mental that tells you to focus on ego and hurt feelings instead of what you know is right. so dont do what the danish coach did. be objective to the ego-beliefs and offense-feelings-- they're not your friends
Interesting comments and I do agree with some of them. However: 1. I quote you, "... and there's no reason to believe she (service judge) wasn't trying to do it right... instead, a lot of people have opinions, which is bad, because opinions suck..." Your comment on the service judge IS your opinion because there very well may be reasons which which are not evident... yet. I don't think your opinion sucks. It's just an opinion based on your judgement that there is no reason. 2. There are a few circumstantial considerations (not evidences as yet) which provoke the "opinions". The Chinese pair never had so many service faults in a single match before. They went on to play the same Danish pair a week later in the French Open and without service faults, beat them handsomely. Though not impossible, it's rather challenging to make sudden changes/adjustments to their services within a week. (But what about all their past matches where they have have been serving the same way.) The Chinese pair were playing a Danish pair on Danish soil. 3. The service judge is "blamed" because she was the one doing the "faulting" and taking away the points. But the real issue is the possibility of biasness. Or perhaps it's an issue of insufficient experience? Investigations should be done objectively. 4. The unusual number of service faults in this match creates many doubts. Was it the equipment? Was it biasness? Was it incompetence? Or was it just the players? But something just does not smell right. However, I do agree with you that cameras and cams etc may probably take care of these service fault issues. Remove the subjectivity and dependence on the nose. Btw, I'm not a Chinese fan. More a fan of the Indonesian team. I just don't have a blocked nose.
Put the arguments of service faults aside, what the Danish coach did was clearly wrong. I don't know if there are any regulations about this, but there should be some kind of punishment for him.
Well, then the Chinese should also be "punished" right? A coach CANNOT talk to the referee under ANY circumstances. I don't condone the "push", but fair is fair.
I fully watched this match Live. The taller Danes didn't get faulted even once. This Chinese pair is no.1 in mixed doubles. Are they not capable of lowering the height of the serve after they are faulted 2-3 times? It all looks suspicious as the Denmark coach comes and shoves the Chinese coach for no reason. I mean the Chinese coach was only contending with the main judge and not with Denmark players for their coach to intervene let alone push somebody. What looks more suspicious is that the serve of Zheng Siwei at 2:30 was not faulted, but Mikkel complains all the same to the service judge as to why it's not a fault. I mean opponents don't do that. Sometimes they do, but only when they get a high serve or a fast flat serve to the back line and never to a low and slow serve to the front line. Did he have an agreement with the service judge? Is that why he's asking her? I'm not trying to accuse them, but the whole match reeks of such unsporting behavior from Danish players, their coach and the service judge. What great spirit and sportsmanship shown by the Chinese players. Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong were smiling for most part of the match; they were calm and collected. Zheng chose to shake hands with the service judge at the end (most don't after Covid) and that's the best gesture there is.
@@amarreezlan7131 I haven't said that they are ranked no.1 my friend; I have just said that they are no.1. The Thailand pair is ranked no.1 only because Chinese players weren't participating in any tournaments for over a year due to Covid. Otherwise Zheng/Huang would still be ranked no.1. The Chinese pair have a better chance at winning than the Thailand pair if they played against each other. The Thailand pair have played 38 matches this year and have lost 9 of them whereas the Chinese pair have played 57 matches in 2022 and have lost only 4. I strongly believe the Chinese pair is the real world no.1.
@@amarreezlan7131 What he likely is referring to when saying number 1 is skill level and their ability, whereas the ranking system bwf uses is based on points gathered from playing in tournaments, which is not a 100% accurate representation of skill.

Thanks for shedding light to this game and not posting misleading thumbnails (I'm calling out another badminton channel which is a little misleading). I'm not a huge fan of both pairs but I do believe in the sports rules and this is all clearly wrong. But the last point from the danes - lol poetic justice. I really do hope there's a proper investigation into this fiasco.
I like them more now. A great show of sportsmanship and a never give up and stay focused attitude. They just show the world how really great they are. Anyway, how many titles they won this year?
What we have to learn from zheng and Huang is about patience, being sportif, humble, respectful and hard-working. Those things that make them true world Champion💪
When you do not protest, it becomes a norm in the game when something is unfair, you have to show protest so that it will not be repeated next time. Just like Carolina Marin antics on the court.

It's ironic that the Danish pair lost on a service error. Mind u they probably felt uncomfortable about the whole situation too. Something seems really odd here
Anyone who has ever played badminton competitively will know that service is like a fixed motion. Altering last minute or trying to change the position of a service will most likely create a disadvantage. Its hard to agree that 10+ service faults are done by top ranking mixed doubles team.
Service calls aren’t enforced properly and players have habit of illegal service all the time. What you have is players that are used to getting away with illegal serves suddenly have to deal with a judge who is strict on the rules.

They ruined the goodwill that Axelsen has built towards Danish badminton. The service judge - Man... I think she was on hard drugs before coming to this match. BWF should come up with some technology to judge service faults rather than depending on human judges who ruin games like these.

I hope you will update us the lastest progress and the bottomline in this matter. It is really interesting to know what happen next. Thanks for this video
I want to know whether the BWF responds to the Chinese badminton association. And is there any investigation or penalty on the service judge? We don`t want this ugly scene to happen again.
Thank you for the video. Have an opaque cardboard tape above the black line on the Perspex sheet. If you do not see clearly the whole of the shuttle below this line, it is too high. The current all clear view above/below the black line makes it difficult to make split second decision was the shuttle three Quaters below the line or 14th/16 of an inch below the line? At our club when we did this (the opaque sheet), many were faulted, and they also could not believe it.
i don't think the service judge plays badminton to be honest. A mix doubles pair that has won literally most competition out there in the world doesn't know how to serve properly continuously? Are you kidding me?
This is a good example that real heroes never can stop by cheap things. Other thing is their no any reason to be angry danish coach. An injustice happened to the Chinese players. I have been watching matches for a long time. I didn't see any service error from Chinese players. This was a Plan
Why doesn’t the BWF add another camera to check whether the player’s serve is above 115 cm or not. Give players a chance to call a challenge for their serve faults.
Danish coach was so disrespectful. If you can’t argue, at least don’t do physical aggressiveness. Much respect for the sportsmanship of the Chinese players🙏
The side camera clearly showed that the racket head was way above waist height at the point of contact with the shuttle. FOUL SERVICE. Always has been, always will be. With the back hand service, the racket head, will always be higher than a forehand service, hence the reason for the introduction of the contraption that now sits in front of the service line judge. If the Chinese can't accept they were breaking the rules, then they should stop playing. Before the introduction of the viewing instrument, it was always accepted by all Badminton players, that the racket head had to be below waist level at the point of contact of the shuttle. If it got much worse with some of those services, you may as well start serving overarm.
Danish coach should not push the chinese coach, but I think the chinese coach should consentrate on coaching instead of trying to affect the umpire. It is clear that we have a big problem when it comes to the serves. Many complains about the umpire being mistaken. Maybe, just maybe we should be happy to finaly see an umpire have the courage to do the tough decisions against a pair like Zheng/Huang. The only one who knows if the serve is too high is the servicejudge.
Reeks of corruption. Both players, service umpire and main umpire need to be investigated and paused from judging any more badminton matches until the investigation is over.
I think what’s worse than the home team favoritism is the bullying antics of the Danish coach. Regardless of the reason, you shouldn’t be pushing the opponents players or coach. I think the Danish coach should be penalized to set an example, but sadly but the BWF president is a Danish so nothing will happen.
Having seven service faults in 3 games is not that many considering some situations before this, especially in this new era of service height enforcement. The most controversial part of the match was the interaction between the 2 coaches during the changeover.
Gill sounded ashamed of her continent tbh. Anyway, all is well that ends well. They lost on a service error at the end ;) Karma! I love how the Chinese maintained their standard.

Biased service judge and umpire. Rude Denmark coach thinking they can do what they like in their country against guests. Look at the China players who keep their cool. Both service judge and umpire must be investigated to protect the good name of badminton
Service judge sure, but not umpire. Umpire can only trust the service judge call, and umpire at that angle can't tell to over rule the service judge. It is up to the referee or the highest authority to make that call. But never in the history (that i know) of official badminton tournament, they willing to kick of umpire or service judges during a match . If an umpire have a power to over rule everything, then you open greater risk of set up game.

Political differences are slowly sipping into sports. It is really indeed a sad scene. It is an outright discrimination. Lost all respect for the referees. It is amazing Zheng & Huang held on. A lot of other players would have given up.
Saw much the same happening to a couple of Danish ladies a while back. They didn't just smile, they were pissed off and argued. Then they got a ban for their troubles. Not funny at all when you're at the receiving end of something like this. All it takes is one one-eyed line judge, or service judge with a bee under their bonnet.

watch the latest episode of the badminton experience podcast, where they said that the service rule is never enforced properly. Like if you are serving a little above 115 cm then the judges let it pass (even when it's clearly a fault) . Now some judges might not know about this leniency and might be strict, like it has has to be strictly below 115 . Now since players are accustomed to serve a bit above 115cm , the proper rule enforcer judge will call out most of their serves as they are illegal
Everything was still in control but then the Danish coach had to step out of line with that disrepectful push 🙄 It got that same energy as the slap of Will Smith 😂
Great respect to both sets of players for this difficult match, when seen live a few times serves were made high up the body obviously over 1.15m and we’re correctly called, however, when corrected by the players a fault was still called. Could be a case of the service judge trying to find fault. Difficult to judge the height if yours particularly tall player.

@@HolgerDanske874 what are u saying the chinese coach just complaining he aint doing any harm to the umpire your spewing useless words
Credit to the China Players. They took it so well and behaved professionally. Although amused. I never saw them had a disgruntled face. Or at least what I was allowed to see during the live stream.
The danish Coach shoving the Chinese coach was uncalled for. That’s a shame.
No matter what they were facing, the control of consciousness and concentration in the game told us that they were a world-class.
i watched this match live/streaming and had questions about these calls as well. the danish pair are obviously fantastic athletes, and zheng/huang are one of the most dominating XD pairs we've seen in a long time. they are consistently extremely well-prepared and they play with extraordinary skill, precision, and professionalism. they are very hard to beat, and i love watching zheng's awesome speed, power, and precision and huang's extra-sensory read of the shuttle and acute tactical awareness
as far as these service faults called against them, let's talk about facts not feelings. first, the rule. not the rule some people may have in their head, but the actual rule that is applied by the service judge. the rule does NOT provide that as long as you strike the shuttle below 1.15m you are ok. please understand that is not the rule. nor is the height you are holding the shuttle before you strike it relevant. you can hold the shuttle over your head before you strike it, and it can be legal, or you can hold it next to the floor and serve it illegally high. rule 9.1.6 states that the WHOLE shuttle must be BELOW 1.15m at the moment of CONTACT. the flare on the shuttle has a diameter of 6cm, so if you are holding the shuttle perfectly level, your striking point has to be below 1.12m (1.15m minus the radius of the shuttle). for my style of service, i need to aim for striking the shuttle around 1.10m to have a legal serve. also, players often move the shuttle forward and up just before contact, which is not illegal, but makes judging very difficult in some cases
the service judge charged with enforcing this rule is staring through two clear panels with black lines and has to call a fault if at the moment of impact any portion of the shuttle is not BELOW the line she is looking at
no one here was looking through what she was looking through, but a lot of people have opinions about what she should have seen based on various things in their head, like how consistently zheng/huang usually serve. the service judge isnt concerned with what zheng/huang usually do nor should she care that they might be the greatest mixed doubles pair of the decade. she's just looking at the shuttle and that black line. it's a humble job, and there's no reason to believe she wasnt trying to do it right
there is a problem here though, which is that a lot of people, including myself, saw those serves are normal and yet they're getting faulted repeatedly with no opportunity for review. no-review is bad for everyone, including the service judge, who has no way to vindicate her calls. bad for everyone, because this was an unusual string of faults against one team, and no one has a good way of confirming these calls as correct or calling them into question. instead, a lot of people have opinions, which is bad, because opinions suck
instead of blaming the service judge, it's much better to understand the problem and see the solution is not imagining things about her motives, but providing review for all service and net calls in every superseries match, which are as much a problem as service calls. and for that, you need high speed camera setups so these calls can be challenged and ruled on based on a visual review. if i have it right, that's one cam at the net and two cams looking at serves, plus a little rulemaking on how to handle service faults (line judge would have to call service fault at end of play instead stopping play with call of fault-- a little tricky but it can be worked out)
if bwf would put more effort into these kinds of nuts& bolts instead of having fire shoot out of the ground when the athletes walk out-- like we're all 8 years old-- the sport would be improved with a higher level of confidence that results are based on performance and not on the way officials are handling the match
The coach tho
Interesting comments and I do agree with some of them. However:
Well said
Put the arguments of service faults aside, what the Danish coach did was clearly wrong. I don't know if there are any regulations about this, but there should be some kind of punishment for him.
He should be sacked
Danish players and coaches often have no manner
@@freemanol Ha - that's REALLY funny.
Well, then the Chinese should also be "punished" right?
A coach CANNOT talk to the referee under ANY circumstances.
I don't condone the "push", but fair is fair.
The service height faults need to be challenge-able. The service judges need to be held to the same accountability as line judges.
3:20 Gill Clark: "UNBELIEVABLE, Stop stealing my line Zheng Siwei". Hahaha. What an end to a match. The Danish made an error serve.
It's karma at work.

Zheng chose to shake hands with the service judge at the end (most don't after Covid) and that's the best gesture there is.
was number 1, currently is the Thailand pair
@@amarreezlan7131 I haven't said that they are ranked no.1 my friend; I have just said that they are no.1. The Thailand pair is ranked no.1 only because Chinese players weren't participating in any tournaments for over a year due to Covid. Otherwise Zheng/Huang would still be ranked no.1. The Chinese pair have a better chance at winning than the Thailand pair if they played against each other. Thanks for shedding light to this game and not posting misleading thumbnails (I'm calling out another badminton channel which is a little misleading).

Disgusting behaviour by the Danish team. Quite right they apologised.
Real shame! If I were the Den players I would never be proud.
Zheng/Huang is a real Champion. No matter what the conditions, they still win. Hat off 🙌🏻
i don't think the service judge plays badminton to be honest. A mix doubles pair that has won literally most competition out there in the world doesn't know how to serve properly continuously? Are you kidding me?
I think this is the second time this happened? The last was also Denmark open i believe, between two WD players

Unacceptable behaviour of Danish coach. I have never seen a very bad umpires like this. It’s good that ultimately Chinese team won the match
bad umpires? How do you know? Did you watch the match at 1,15 m height?
Why doesn’t the BWF add another camera to check whether the player’s serve is above 115 cm or not. Give players a chance to call a challenge for their serve faults.
Danish coach was so disrespectful. If you can’t argue, at least don’t do physical aggressiveness. Much respect for the sportsmanship of the Chinese players🙏
Just imagine the news it would create if it was the Chinese coach who shoved the Danish coach.
Exactly. Asians should stop bootlicking the Europeans and fight back.
If it got much worse with some of those services, you may as well start serving overarm.
dont know about the male player but the chinese woman was serving chest height repeatedly. I doubt her chest is under 1,15m.
Zheng managed his emotion well. No wonder they are on #1. On his services, some of them are definitely high
Respect for the Chinese .they kept cool. Learnt something today
Having seven service faults in 3 games is not that many considering some situations before this, especially in this new era of service height enforcement. The most controversial part of the match was the interaction between the 2 coaches during the changeover.

Like if you are serving a little above 115 cm then the judges let it pass (even when it's clearly a fault) . Now some judges might not know about this leniency and might be strict, like it has has to be strictly below 115 .
